Minerals Exploration Plan on State Nonferrous Metallic Minerals Leases Submitted by AngloGold Ashanti Minnesota on October 10, 2017 and

summarized here by the DNR Division of Lands and Minerals

Narrative: AngloGold Ashanti Minnesota (AGAM) proposes to explore for metallic mineral deposits on

the state nonferrous metallic mineral leases they recently received. These leases cover portions of

northeastern Itasca County as well as nearby lands in Koochiching and St. Louis Counties (see Figure 1).

AGAM proposes surface exploration activities that include geological mapping, which involves visual

examination of bedrock outcrops, collection of samples of bedrock outcrops and glacial sediments, and

geophysical surveys. The explorer will use hand tools such as a hammer and chisel, hand shovels, hand

augers, or portable hand-held power tools such as a posthole digger to collect samples. The ground-

based geophysical surveys may include gravity, magnetics, electromagnetics, and seismic methods.

These surveys will be done with portable instruments that passively detect properties of the earth.

State nonferrous metallic mineral lease ids: Numerous, see accompanying maps

Public Land Survey location: Itasca County: portions of Townships T60N-R25W, T61N-R22W, T61N-

R23W, T61N-R24W, T62N-R22W, T62N-R23W, and T62N-R24W. Koochiching County: portions of

Townships T63N-R23W, T63N-R24W, T63N-R25W. St. Louis County: portions of Townships T62N-R18W,

T62N-R19W and T62N-R25W.

Types of exploration activity: Geological mapping, soil and bedrock sampling, and passive geophysical

surveys.

Expected time period of activity: Upon approval through December 2018.

Access: AGAM will use existing trails and roads by automobile or ATV and will walk in where there are

no trails. AGAM will not make new trails and will not cut any trees.

Surface ownership: Upon DNR approval AGAM has the right to explore on state-owned surface, which

covers most of the work area. Other parties own the surface estate over some of the leased state

mineral parcels and adjacent lands. AGAM states they will contact each affected land owner at least 20

days in advance with a description of the proposed activity and offer to meet with the landowner prior

to doing any exploration activity on those lands. AGAM states they have an agreement with Minnesota

Land Trust to not consider exploration activities on their lands until after August 1, 2018.
