MINDS and other parties where MINDS is

involved.

The events where MINDS were invited are

the MELTA Conference in Kuching, the IET

Faraday Challenge Finals in Kuala Lumpur,

First MINDS Medical Research and Innovation Forum

Reported by: Dr. Chew Heng Hai

MedicMINDS, a chapter of Malaysian Invention and Design Society was founded in 2009. In

conjunction with its 10th Anniversary, MINDS Medical Research and Innovation (MMRI) Forum

was held on 26 September 2019 at Rimba Ilmu, University of Malaya. The goal of MMRI is to

identify problems in the medical research and innovation ecosystem in Malaysia and brainstorm

for best solutions. The ultimate objective is to help Malaysian medical innovation to succeed in

global market and to bring in revenue for our nation.

The forum assembled over 50 participants from a wide spectrum of stakeholders of medical

research and innovation from a variety of organizations, both private and government from all

over Malaysia.

The event started with an opening speech by the President of MINDS, Academician Tan Sri

Emeritus Professor Datuk Dr. Augustine Ong Soon Hock, followed by a speech by the Chairman

of MedicMINDS, Dr. Chew Heng Hai.

YB Dr. Lee Boon Chye, Deputy Health Minister of Malaysia was then conferred as an Honorary

Life Member of MINDS and as Patron of MedicMINDS. YB Dr. Lee delivered a very enlightening

address. He suggested that Malaysia should try to emulate NHS of UK which has been reported

to be very successful in their NIA NHS (Innovation Acceleration Programme). He exhorted

Malaysian researchers to be courageous enough to stand firm on our discoveries. He concluded

his speech with his wish for Malaysians to optimise the opportunities and use this forum as a

platform to unite all the stakeholders in medical research and innovation for the benefit of

mankind, our people and our beloved nation.

shared his experience followed by Dr. Chew Heng Hai, who related his experience too in medical

device innovation. The forum concluded with an active panel discussion between all the

speakers and the audience.

The forum was very constructive and productive. Speakers and delegates actively participated and keenly shared their perspectives to contribute to the betterment of the ecosystem. The forum successfully presented a clearer picture and a better understanding of the problems in the ecosystem. It also successfully identified a very promising path to bring Malaysian medical
