A MESSAGE FROM MR. VEIT, PRINCIPAL
On behalf of the teachers, staff, and administration of Joyce Kilmer School, we would like to welcome everyone to the 2015-2016 school year! This year we are
excited to be a part of so many new and innovative academic and educational
opportunities here at Joyce Kilmer. The use of our Chromebook lap top computers and our smart televisions have connected our classrooms to a world of information while
our community partners have assisted us in planting our roots firmly within our town. One such group, the
Milltown Police Department,
has been actively involved with our students and school in
an attempt to build solid relationships between our
children and our very own town superheroes, our police force.
The relationships being formed
between the officers and our students will carry over in to
the community and provide our students the familiarity needed
to be comfortable when needing
assistance. We thank the Milltown Police Department for their time, effort, and support in making their
relationships with our students one that happens on a first name basis. We are very lucky to have them in our community.

Fourth Grade
The 4th grade is off to a great school year so far at JK! The
student’s are extremely excited to be in a new school and to
participate in all that Joyce Kilmer has to offer. Overall, 4th
grade is most thrilled about being able to sit with their
friends at lunch! This is a change and new privilege from
Parkview. We asked the 4th graders to tell us some of their favorite things
about JK so far. Katelyn in 4B is really excited about the teachers and thinks
they are nice and make learning easy to understand. Gwen in 4D really likes the
playground equipment. Jessie in 4J can’t wait to participate in all the before and
after school activities. She thinks it is a great way to let all the kids get involved
in school. Finally Abby in 4M is eager to join band and chorus because these
during school activities were not offered at Parkview. The 4th graders can’t wait
to see what the rest of this year and their next 4 years here have in store!

Nurse’s Corner
Welcome back to school! I hope everyone had an enjoyable summer. I would like to direct you to where you can find information on health office procedures. The details are outlined in the pupil/parent/staff handbook. A link to the handbook can be found on the district’s web page. Please refer to the handbook if you have any questions relating to medications in school, illness/injury procedures, phys. ed. excuses, sports physicals, etc. As always, if you have any
questions or concerns, please contact me via phone or email. I am always happy to answer questions or provide clarification.
If you visit our school website, (www.milltownps.org) you will see that I have a nurse’s page that contains pertinent information and resources as well as forms available to download. Just click on Joyce Kilmer School, then Nurse’s Corner in the left tab. You can choose to view the Nurse’s page or forms to download.
Health screenings (height, weight, BMI, vision, hearing and blood pressure) were performed on the students. If your child had a deficiency in hearing or vision or if their blood pressure or BMI (body mass index) is not within the normal range, you received a report of the findings and a referral form to be completed by your healthcare provider and returned to the health office. If you did not receive a written report, it is because your child’s results were within the normal range for his/her age. If
you would like to receive a report on your child’s health screening, please contact me and I will be happy to provide that for you. Health screenings are not a substitute for regular physical examinations, which are recommended annually. It is especially important to have your child examined at least once during pre-adolescence (4th - 6th grade) and adolescence (7th - 12th grade). A thorough vision exam by a licensed eye care provider is also recommended.

Allyson’s Awesome Advice “Oh no! I forgot my pencil case!” Are you in sixth, seventh, or eighth grade? Does this sound familiar to you? If so, I’ve got something in store for you. Hello, I’m Allyson Schulman, and I’m here to help you out. Since I am now in seventh grade, I have learned a lot about being in middle school. I am going to give you
my top ten tips for bettering your middle school experience.
1. Try new clubs/activities. If you want to join a club/activity, do it. You may like it more than you originally thought you would. It will be something to look forward to, teaches you how to improve your time management, and gets rid of stress.
2. Keep a pair of sneakers in your gym locker. If you forgot to wear sneakers on a day that you have gym class, or you just didn’t want to, you won’t have to sit out and lose points from your average.
3. Use zipper binders or regular 1.5-2” binders to hold your school supplies. Keep your notebooks, folders, and a pencil case in it. Instead of having to ask yourself, “Do I need this notebook or this notebook?” you will already have all your morning and afternoon supplies in it.
4. Reset your lock to 0. This will ensure that no one can pull your lock and unlock your locker.
5. Participate in class. Always raise your hand to show your teacher that you are paying
attention to the lesson. Even if you don’t know the answer, the teacher will know that you are trying your best.
6. Ask questions. If you are unsure of something, it is crucial to ask questions. It is a great idea to fully understand the topic, and it will help you to do well on future tests/quizzes and projects.
7. Use your agenda to decide what you will have to bring home in your backpack. For example, if your agenda says, “read chapter 1 of class novel,” you will know to bring home your book. You can use your agenda to check off everything you need.
8. Respect your teachers. If you respect your teachers, they will respect you, too. 9. Don’t procrastinate. If you receive a project that isn’t due for a while, start it as soon
as possible, even if you just do a little of it each day. 10. Don’t make excuses for not doing homework or projects. Just do it. Bonus tip: Always try your best!

HOUR OF
In celebration of Computer Science Education Week, students at JK participated in the Hour of Code during one Math class. Hour of Code is a one-hour introduction to computer science, designed to demystify code and show that anybody can learn the basics. The idea behind this movement is that every student should have the opportunity to learn computer science. It helps to nurture problem-solving skills, logic and creativity. By starting early, students will have a foundation for success in any 21st-century career path. Leading the instruction were volunteers from the 8th grade Coding classes.
