Example Program Requirements

Political Science Major This is a limited enrolment program. All students who request the program and obtain at least the specified mark(s) in the required course(s) will be eligible to enrol.

Required courses: Applying after first year (or four full courses or the equivalent): A final mark of at least 67% in POL 101Y or POL 200Y or one full POL course or the equivalent in half courses.

(7 POL full courses or their equivalent. Of these, 1.5 FCEs must be 300+ series courses and 0.5 must be a 400 series. )

First Year: POL101Y1 Higher Years: 1. POL200Y1 2. One of the following: POL201Y1/POL203Y1/POL207Y1/POL208Y1/POL215Y1 3. POL214Y1/POL224Y1 4. POL322H1 5. 2.5 FCEs additional POL courses. Of these, at least 1.0 must be 300+ series and 0.5 must be a 400 series course.

Example Course Description POL101Y1 Democracy, Dictatorship, War, and Peace: An

Introduction [48L/24T]

This course is an introductory survey of the main currents and important themes in political science, emphasizing the subdisiplines of international relations, comparative politics, and political theory.

Exclusion: POL103Y1, POL105Y1, POL108Y1 Distribution Requirement Status: This is a Social Science course

Breadth Requirement: Society and its Institutions (3)

Course designator – POL, three letter short for Political Science Course number – generally indicates level of difficulty; 101 indicates a 100-level introductory course Credit value Y indicates a full-credit; H indicates a half-credit

L= Lectures; P= Practical work in laboratories or studios; S= Seminars; T= Tutorials

Prerequisite – a course that must be completed before you can enrol in the desire course

Co-requisite – a course that must be taken at the same time as the desired course

Exclusions – a course that is similar enough to the desired course that you are not allowed to enrol in

it

Recommended Preparation – background material or courses that may enhance a student’s

understanding

Course Fee vs. Program Fee

• Program Fee • all students taking 4.0 to 5.0 will pay the same flat fee • EXCEPTION: Students registered with Accessibility Services will

be charged the per course fees

• Course fee • Full time studies, but per course fees (3.0 to 3.5 credits) • Tuition for part-time students (2.5 courses or less) will be

charged on a per “course fee” basis

• Students will still be able to “opt-out” of some incidental

costs

Important Fees Information

(for automatic registration)

You must pay your fees or officially defer them (e.g.,

Noah Meltz Bursary, OSAP) by August 23, 2016

How to determine if your registration is complete

If status = REG your registration is complete

X If status = INVIT you risk being removed from your courses

Students with INVIT status will have their courses removed from their

timetable at any time and with the wait list, you are unlikely to get back in!

Check to make sure you are REG by the end of August

Financial Planning and Awards

• www.adm.utoronto.ca click on financial aid options

• Estimate your expenses ▫ Living expenses: rent, utilities, groceries, telephone/internet,

transportation, childcare, etc.

▫ Educational expenses: tuition, books, supplies, etc.

• Financial resources ▫ Consider all sources of funding such as family support, education plans,

savings, summer and study period income (work study), etc.

▫ If insufficient, consider financial aid options such as OSAP or Meltz

Academic Bridging graduates will automatically be considered for Academic Bridging awards based on their final grade ▫ you can increase your changes if you have documented financial need and fit any

of the listed award criteria

▫ students will be notified in August so you will not be able to confirm awards for budgeting purposed

Financial Aid (Student Loans and/or Grants)

OSAP for students with course load 60% or greater in both terms (and students registered with Accessibility Services with at least 40% course load)

Meltz bursaries or PT OSAP for students with course load less than 60% in both terms

• Very important that students apply as early as possible and complete the correct application(s) based on their anticipated course load

but if your course load is not evenly distributed, you will need to determine percentage in each term

Some students (taking 2.5 FCE) may be FT one term and PT one term and will need to fill out two different applications!
