Mill Run Register Newsletter for Mill Run Elementary Volume 62 May 2016 Cornely’s Corner I guess it is true what they say… April Showers Bring May Flowers! I want to begin by thanking many of our teachers and their classrooms for adopting several of the Mill Run gardens, our amazing parent volunteers for the work that they have done planting and weeding in our wonderful outdoors, and the Boy Scouts for their outstanding work to lay fresh mulch. The grounds simply could not be more beautiful. As we arrive to the month of May, I want to express a sincere “THANKS” and high level of appreciation for our incredible teaching staff. During the Lirst week of May, we recognize Teacher Appreciation Week. For the past 11 years at Mill Run, I have been simply amazed by the outpouring of gratitude expressed to our teachers, especially during this week, by our students and community. As you know, our staff works very hard to provide the absolute best education for our students. I have the pleasure of witnessing this daily, and continue to marvel in their talents. During this week, the PTO, room parents, and ofLice staff have some wonderfully planned activities to recognize our teachers and para professionals. It is also important to include our children on sharing this recognition, as well. Please consider having your child write a handwritten note expressing to their teacher how much he/she means to them. It is my opinion that receiving notes such as these provides the greatest fulLillment, and I am certain that our teachers would agree. Thank you so much in advance for making this week extra special for our incredible staff! You will see in the “May and June AtaGlance” that we have two very busy months. Please be sure to take a few moments to read through the many listed events, which includes the upcoming SOL testing schedule, award ceremonies, Lield trips, etc. so that you can mark your calendars and join us! Also, as we prepare for the SOL tests in grades 35, please be sure to have your child get a good night’s sleep and a healthy breakfast so that he/she is attentive and best prepared for these assessments. We hope you have an incredible month ahead, spent enjoying the beautiful weather with your families. Thank you so much for sharing your children with us! It is truly our blessing to serve the Mill Run family! Warmly, John Cornely Principal May/June At-A-Glance Asian Paci)ic American Heritage Month, Please see the SOL testing schedule on page 2. Counselor’s

Corner

The “Character Word” for the month of May is Cit izensh ip , the final word for the school year. Guidance lessons in the classroom will focus on group and individual responsibility for citizenship. Citizenship involves following the rules and doing their part to ensure their own safety and that of others. Please ask your children to tell you about what they learned in their guidance lesson.

Career Day will be held on Friday, June 10th (8:30-11:00). Parents please be watching Thursday folders for more information regarding an opportunity for you to come and present your career to our 4th and 5th gr. students. We will be in need of 14 presenters this year (7 for 4th gr. and 7 for 5th gr.).

The next Mountain Lion Pride Breakfast will be on Wednesday, May 4th 2016.

Parents, please be sure to have your children in bed on time (the earlier the better) during the SOL testing time. The extra sleep combined with a little daily exercise and a healthy breakfast will help your child to feel awake and energized during the testing.

Fifth Grade Transition Info: **The last day to sign up for Bridge to the Ridge is June 14th. This is for Eagle Ridge bound students only. Information will be sent home to Farmwell students regarding the Inspire Program. There is a cost associated with these programs, please let us know if we can assist with this in any way.**All 5th gr. Students will visit Eagle Ridge Middle School on Wednesday, June 8th. Students will be eating lunch at Eagle Ridge that day, please ensure that your child has money on their lunch account or packs a lunch. **Parents please remember that the last day to make changes to your child’s 6th gr. schedule is June 23rd. Please feel free to contact your grade-level counselor at any time with your questions or concerns so that we may discuss them with you.
