Addressing global challenges

4

Throughout history, much of the world’s prosperity and development

can be attributed to metals and minerals. Even though technology has

developed in many areas, a dilemma exists between the growing need

for these resources and the environmental impact of processing them.

• Our mission, ”Sustainable use of Earth’s natural resources”

addresses today’s challenges.

• Through our sustainable technologies it is possible to decouple

economic growth and its environmental impact.

Positive impact of our technologies

• 5.4 million tonnes CO2 emissions

avoided through use of Outotec

metals-related processes

• Our advanced technology and

service solutions ensure social

license to operate

• We aim at 50% reduction in fresh

make-up water consumption in

non-ferrous metals concentrators

• Our target is that through Outotec

waste-to-energy solutions the

annual reduction in the use of

fossil fuels is comparable to 80

MWe power plants and 60 MWth

steam boilers.

• High N and P surpluses in

countries/regions of intensive

livestock

-> environmental challenges

• Application of munical waste

water sludge on farmland is

also becoming very restricted

• EU more or less entirely import

dependent, and mineral

fertilizer prices incresing

• The proposed energy and nutrient recovery technique is a feasible and

sustainable approach to sludge and manure management in Finland.

• The process can cope with all types of farmyard manure, municipal

sewage sludge and biomass waste from marine environments as a

fresh or digested material – no upstream process modifications are

necessary.

• The process is totally compatible with anaerobic digestion – maximum

energy yield from a combination of both processes!

• The process has a large economic potential in Europe and globally. It

has the potential to create sustainable jobs and economic growth in

Finland and abroad.
