The 2014 Wayne Webster Outstanding Young Breeder Award was presented to Shaun and Betty Hyde of Morley, Michigan during the

2014 Michigan Holstein Association Annual Awards Banquet. The purpose of the award is to recognize a young member or couple who as a breeder of registered Holstein cattle have contributed to the Holstein breed in a positive way.Shaun grew up on their family farm, Moram Holsteins, and has spent his entire life around Holstein cattle. At age seven, he would ride with his grandpa, George Robb of Rustic Herd, to look at cattle and visit farms. Shaun eventually began to show locally and work with different herds at shows during the summer. Shaun’s keen eye for cattle began to develop.Following high school, Shaun graduated from Michigan State University’s Ag Tech Dairy program. Shaun sharpened his judging skills while at college, even earning top honors at the North American Judging contest in Louisville.Shaun returned home to farm with his parent’s, Dick & Pat Hyde, full time. As time permitted, he continued to take some time to judge some shows and work as a fitter. Shaun was able to travel the country and met many breeders and see some great cattle that really inspired him.As Shaun and Dick forged their herd, they wanted to breed an animal that milked but also looked good. Breeding and matings became a large part of Shaun’s responsibility on the farm. The BAA for the Moram herd is currently 106.8. The herd is 100% registered and had a 2012 rolling herd average for 50 cows of 24,745 milk 4.0% 979 fat and 3.0% 752 protein. “We breed for a functional type cow, that can merchandise themselves and put milk in the tank,” explained Shaun.Shaun’s keen eye sought out cows to purchase, including C Cityview Inspiration Penny 4E-94 and Mar-Ro Del-Rbn Shasta Babe 2E-90. Shaun and his grandpa found Penny when she was a calf who has now developed into a 4E-94 cow that has produced two Excellent and three Very Good offspring. Babe has four Very Good offspring to date.Shaun also is involved by serving on the Michigan Holstein Association Board of Directors. He is active in Michigan Farm Bureau, Michigan Milk Producers Association and the Montcalm County DHIA.Shaun and Betty have been married for ten years and have two children, Avery (6) and Claire (5).

Sherry Meyer, President of the Michigan Holstein Association, awards the Wayne Webster Outstanding Young Breeder Award to Shaun and Betty Hyde.

their showstoppers to the national show in Waterloo, Iowa. At the end of the day these two men had seven class winners, and three champions. Keep in mind these were primarily homegrown cattle competing with some of the likes as Curtiss Candy, Romandale, Paclamar, Allen Hetts and R. Peter Heffering, to name a few.

Upon his graduation from Purdue University, this honoree returned to the home farm to work with his father. The farm included 30 employees, 1500 head of cattle and 1000 acres of farm land. C.M. helped his father merchandise cattle around the globe. His primary responsibilities included taking care of the registered herd and show herd. The show herd eventually accumulated 76 All-American nominations. The registered herd today is still fourth all time for breeding and developing the most EX-95 or higher cows.

Along the way he developed his own prefix Cash-Mar-CM and bred several animals recognized as All-Americans himself. Most notably was Cash-Mar-CM Astronaut Socks a 3X All-American nominee. Father and son sold and leased cattle to breeders throughout Indiana and the United States. In the 1980’s when agriculture economics were hit hard, the family farm felt the huge impact.

After his father passed away, the son made the difficult decision to sell the herd and the farm, so that they would not leave others financially stranded like many had done to them. Once everything was accounted for and he had found new employment for each employee, C.M. looked into new ventures and life goals, true to his grandfathers Zeldenrust name and the seldom rest philosophy.

In 1986 C.M. graduated from the American Auctioneer College in Iowa. He also received his real estate license in 1986. In 1991 he opened a Re/Max real estate firm in Avon, Indiana. In 1996 he designed and built an 8000 square foot state of the art facility that earned the Re/Max International Design Award. His firm become the number one firm in its marketplace. He earned the Certified Residential Specialist Award and Broker of the Year honor, each designations that less than 10% of all realtors receive.

Today C.M. has sold the firm, but remains on as a broker. He enjoys making his own line of cheese. He still follows Holstein circles and enjoys every year attending the Holstein show at the Indiana State Fair and visiting with lifelong friends. Congratulations to the recipient of Indiana’s Lifetime Member Award, C.M. Bottema the III.

Submitted by Dru Mercer, Indiana Holstein Association.

The Indiana Holstein Association recognized C.M. Bottema the III as the recipient of the lifetime me mbership award.

C.M. hails from a family that has revolutionized the Holstein breed. Not only have they had a huge impact on Hoosier Holsteins, but equally as important their impact has been felt by the entire Holstein breed as we know it. Consider the many breed firsts this family has garnered:

1) Bred the first bull in the Holstein breed to score EX-97, Zeldenrust Fond Memory

2) Fond Memory was also a 7X All-American nominee as well as a 6X All-Canadian Nominee, along with being a multiple winner of each awards.

3) Fond Memory was the first bull of the Holstein breed in one year to be Nominated All-American himself, as well as have a milking daughter nominated and a Senior Get Nominated the same year.

4) Fond Memory sired the first Junior Get in the breed, to be All-American after winning at three national shows and three state fairs in one year.

5) This family bred the first Holstein cow to produce over 10,000lbs of milk lifetime, Zeldenrust Pontiac Korndyk. Pontiac was also a National Grand Champion, score EX-95 and had 14 natural calves.

6) They bred the first cow to go 4E and was recognized as a GMD while being scored EX-97, Zeldenrust Mistress Roxann.

7) Their cow Cash-Mar Xmas Perfect was the breed’s first GMD cow to have three Excellent offspring.

8) They are breeders of an EX-97 point bull and cow.

9) Imagine the breed today without the names of such popular bulls and cows like Durham, Goldwyn, Atwood, Apple, Barbie and Della. Each one of these animals and so many more breed leaders trace back to one of the breeds all time best bulls, Walkway Chief Mark. Mark himself is a maternal grandson to a cow bred by this illustrious family, Cash-Mar Triune Burke Maxine.

10) This family consisted of a grandfather, three sons, and a grandson who worked together as well as developing their own herds, to build some of the top genetics for type and production, and the most sought after cattle of their time. Together they accounted for nearly 100 All-American nominations and awards. As well as numerous National Grand champions in both the show ring and in the production line. They all served on the board for Indiana Holsteins, held offices including President and represent Indiana as delegates at numerous national conventions.

C.M. Bottema the III’s grandfather arrived in the United States in 1896 from the Netherlands at the age of 18. After milking for other herds in Pennsylvania and Kentucky, he purchased a farm near Beach Grove, Indiana and register the prefix Zeldenrust. The name Zeldenrust is Dutch and means “seldom rest”, a characteristic that this family would forever be known for.

Though he had several children, three entered the registered Holstein business like their father. Two of these sons, an uncle and the father to this year’s honoree, impacted the breed like few ever will. In 1961 they combined the best of each of their herds to make a show string envied by any then or since. They took

Dean Beer is the 2014 recipient of the Indiana Holstein Association Master Breeder Award.

Dean has spent a lifetime of breeding a herd based on type and longevity, while managing the herd for high profitable production. He is a second generation dairyman who has participated in both state and national Holstein activities for 41 years.

Beginning with the purchase of six registered heifers in 1961, this honoree has bred and developed a herd of 100% homebred cows that consist of 220 milking animals that have been on DHIA test for 37 years.

The herd has consistently seen over 21,875 pounds of milk 696 pounds of fat and 658 pounds of protein for a RHA for several years. Over the course of time he has bred 50 Excellent Holstein individuals. During the 1980’s when time allowed, the herd was very successful on the tanbark trail earning such honors as the 1977 and 1980 Indiana State Fair Grand Champion Bred and Owned animal, 1980 Reserve Grand Champion at the Indiana State Fair along with the coveted Premier Breeder Banner, and 3rd place Best Three Females at the World Dairy Expo International Holstein Show. In 1981 the herd exhibited the Reserve Grand Champion female at the Kentucky State Fair and in 1989 the Grand Champion cow of the Indiana State Fair Junior Show.

In 1981 the herd represented all of Indiana when it graced the front cover of the Holstein World with four homebred Excellent cows posing in front of their lovely homestead. As the farm and herd grew, the opportunity to go out and show with a string of homebred beauties was not as easily available. However, when the right one came along they still made sure she had her opportunity to compete.

The herd has always been bred with type and stature in mind. This was true when building the herd using such bulls as Elevation, Valiant, Bootmaker, Admiral and Warden. Bulls like these were selected and then mated to cows like Dewbrook Fury Dewdrop EX-92-3E GMD and her daughter Dewbrook Bootmaker Dewmore EX-90 GMD to serve as a foundation to grow from. Other high scored and foundation cows consisted of Dewbrook Dividend Arlene EX-92-2E, Dewbrook Master Peache EX-92-2E, Dewbrook Pawnee Star Bunny EX-91-2E and Dewbrook Elevation Tony Brett EX-91-3E just to name a few.

Besides showing the family has been active for many years in supporting county, district and state sales. The philosophy of merchandising has always been only selling from the top of the herd and one that will prove successful for the new owner. This has been proven a successful plan when you look at just a few of the buyers of cattle from this herd. Hanover Hill Farms of Ontario, owner of Dewbrook Elevation Tony Brett EX-91-3E, Doug Maddox of California, purchased Dewbrook Bootmaker Joan EX-90, Pappy Farms of Utah, purchasers of Dewbrook Silver Tim Angie EX91 and Indiana breeders Ron and Eric Fuhrman buyers of Dewbrook Master Joni EX-90.

As a breeder, Dean Beer has sold 22 animals that have went on to score Excellent for their new owners along with countless others that have been scored Very Good and all producing large volumes of profitable milk.

Dean has been married to his wife Jennifer for 48 years and together they have raised two children, served on a variety of local committees and organizations as well as the state Holstein association, and grown a successful farming operation of well over 1500 acres.

Submitted by Dru Mercer, Indiana Holstein Association.

18 Summer 2014

Congratulations to Hayleigh Geurink of Allendale for being selected as a Holstein Association USA Distinguished Junior Member Semifinalist. Below is Hayleigh’s holstein story which is a portion of her junior entry book she submitted.

My Holstein story began in 1998 when my mom married the son of a dairy farmer. I was three years old that summer when

I took my first steps into the tie-stall barn of Geurink Centennial Dairy. I think most kids that age would be scared to death of the nearly one-ton animals standing in front of them, but I guess I am not most kids. I eagerly lunged forward to pet one of these huge black and white animals, but no one warned me about the gutter! I guess they didn’t really have time! Needless to say, I fell short of petting my first cow and ended up in a big pile of…well you know. To everyone’s surprise I wasn’t bothered at all that my little boots were now soaking up the brown refuse. In fact, I was still so focused on finally petting one of these massive creatures that I jumped right out and continued on my quest. I was hooked. As I started getting older more opportunities became available for me to get involved in. I

was told from the very beginning that I would be expected to work my way up to my first calf, and that is just what I did. Before I get too more in depth, I have to introduce you to a main character in my story, my aunt Jess. Jess got me started in my Holstein career, and she has been my biggest role model since day one. I tagged along with Jess around the farm almost every day, helping her with whatever needed to be done. Like most little girls, when it came to chores feeding the baby calves was my favorite task. I took pride in this job because at the time it was really the only thing I could do on my own. After the babies were fed and happy, we then would proceed to the show animals. Every day, Jess and I would lead and wash our beautiful show girls. After helping on the farm for a while with these various activities and learning the ropes, I finally earned my first show calf Geurink Lee Jasmyn. Jasmyn had my heart. As much as I already loved the farm, I now had an added incentive. I couldn’t wait to get there every day and usually tried making my Aunt Jess have sleepovers with me. Now that I had Jasmyn I couldn’t wait for the fair to get here. I washed and worked with Jas every single day until the

fair. She was mine – not just a calf someone handed me on show day – and I took great pride in that. Once the fair rolled around I was more than excited and ready for the world to see what I regarded as my perfect Jasmyn. Although I wasn’t old enough for 4-H yet, I was still ready to show all those other little Pee-Wee’s what we could do! My naturally competitive nature was fueled as I lead Jasmyn around the big ring, set her up and answered the judges questions which my aunt and grandpa had prepared me for. I had caught the “show bug!”I continued showing every year, but absolutely couldn’t wait until I turned nine. I wanted to compete so badly against other kids who loved doing exactly what I do. When I was finally eligible for 4-H, I was off like a race horse finally let out of its holding gate. I wanted to participate in everything I possibly could, and that’s just what I did. I was on the Ottawa County quiz bowl team, management team, and judging team that competed at Michigan’s state 4-H contest my very first year. Anyone who knows me knows that I’ve never really like school, but studying about cows was fun! At 10 years old, I placed in the top ten for judging in the junior division, and

that was all I needed to make me want to win it all. In the fall of 2004, when I was ten years old, my grandpa decided to sell the cows. Farming was wearing on him physically, and with our small farm resting in the middle of the city he decided our future in the dairy industry was based more on the cows themselves than on running the farm itself. A few friends of ours agreed to keep cows for us while Grandpa continued to raise heifers. Although, he sold out in my early years of 4-H I wasn’t going to let that obstacle stand between me and the tasks I wanted to accomplish. The Michigan 4-H Dairy Youth Program awards one $1000 and one $750 scholarship to the top two individuals in both the junior and senior divisions. To win these cash prizes you have to have to have the top combined scores in three out of the four 4-H contests: showmanship, judging, quiz bowl, and management. When I was 13 years old I won my showmanship class, the junior judging contest, and did very well in quiz bowl. These scores were enough to allow me to win the High Overall Junior Award. I was ecstatic! My hard work had finally paid off and now I had

Michigan’s Hayleigh Geurink Selected as a Semifinalist

Holstein Announce Distinguished Junior Members

Holstein Association USA announces twelve semifinalists in the 2014 Distinguished Junior Member (DJM) contest. DJM recognition is the highest honor that a Junior Holstein Association member can receive, recognizing outstanding youth and their

involvement with the Holstein breed. Applicants must submit an entry book including essays discussing their participation in Junior Holstein programs, a detailed resume of their school and community involvement, and clearly express their knowledge of the dairy industry. This year’s semifinalists are: Emma Andrew, Newark, N.Y.; Elizabeth Davis, Union Bridge, Md.; Hayleigh Geurink, Grand Rapids, Mich.; Sara Kitchen, Danville, Pa.; Cassandra Krull, Lake Mills, Wis.; Jaylene Lesher, Bernville, Pa.; Lauren Nell, Gettysburg, Pa.; Ryan Pralle, Humbird, Wis.; Nicholas Schuster, Fond du Lac, Wis.; Joshua Simon, Farley, Iowa; Meghan Vaill, Vernon, N.Y.; and Carrie Warmka, Fox Lake, Wis. “My Holstein story had been a whirlwind of hard work and excitement, and I can’t wait to see where this ride will take me next,” says nineteen-year-old Hayleigh Geurink in her story of Junior Holstein work. She continues, “The dairy industry and the many wonderful people I have met through it have developed me into the person I am today, and I want to do everything in my power to give back to this great community of dairy enthusiasts.” Twenty-year-old Ryan Pralle talks about the impact Registered Holsteins have had on him, “My life thus far has been painted ‘black and white’ with Holstein involvement and dairy activities. These experiences as well as growing up on a progressive dairy farm have given me immense knowledge, leadership growth, and inspiration to continue working in the dairy industry. Without a doubt, much of my interest in life sciences and genetics was fostered early on from my experiences in dairy bowl and interacting with our professional consultants.” These twelve semifinalists will continue on to interview at the National Holstein Convention, held June 24 through 28, in Dubuque, Iowa, to become one of six finalists. Finalists will receive annual renewed memberships to Holstein Association USA. All Junior Holstein members, between the ages of 17 and 21 are eligible to apply for the Distinguished Junior Member recognition. $1000 to either put towards school or an animal. The obvious choice for me was the animal! I was also the top overall junior again the next year, but you are only eligible to collect the prize once in each division. With this scholarship money and some other earnings from my summer dairy adventures, my grandparents decided that they would take me to the Autumn Opportunity Sale that fall. I carefully studied all of the pretty heifers in the sale line up, but one immediately caught my eye. I looked up her pedigree in the catalog and found that she was a granddaughter of Krull Broker Elegance out of a VG-88 two year old, and I figured there was probably a good chance I wouldn’t be able to afford her. I am the type of girl though, that if I want something badly enough I will try to make it happen, and well, that’s just what I did! I went and found my grandma and showed her my find, she agreed that she would match my funds. I then called up my Aunt Jess and told her the story, she agreed that she trusted my judgment and would also go in on this spring calf with me. Before the heifer entered the sale ring, we had decided that we would spend no more than $3,900 on her – three equal contributions of $1300. She had the potential to be my first purchase ever. When she got in the ring all I remember hearing is the “yeeeeeep!” from the guys taking the bids. My initial thought was that I had no chance to have this heifer that I had already fallen in love with. At this point my grandma was in a bidding war with another man. The price got to $3900 and I heard the words “SOLD!” come out of the auctioneer’s voice. My heart sank, until I realized that that this little heifer was headed home with us! Budjon-JK Dundee Emerald became the new love of my life, and my very first major purchase! The older I became, the more involved I wanted to be come in the dairy industry. When I was 12 years old I ran for a spot on the Michigan Junior Holstein Association’s board. This board is in charge of a lot of big activities for Michigan’s dairy youth, and running for one of ten coveted positions at such a young age meant the odds were against me, but to my surprise I was elected to be the District Five representative! Looking back, it is incredible to me that other MJHA members had enough faith in me at twelve to be one of the ten representatives. When I turned 15 I became the Secretary of the Michigan Junior Holstein Association (MJHA). This position required me to take minutes at each meeting and make sure they were distributed to all the members. I held that position for two years until I was elected to serve as the President at 17. My main goal from day one of my Presidency has been to make the Michigan Junior Holstein Association as strong as it could possibly be, and to be highly respected for the events we put on. As president, I lead meetings and oversee the planning and execution of many MJHA events. A few of these events include The Party Barn at the Michigan Dairy Expo, Dairy Fun Day and the Semen and Embryo sale which is our biggest fundraiser and annual trips to the National Holstein Convention. Our goal with these events is to educate youth about dairy cattle and opportunities in the dairy industry, as well as to provide a professional means for them

to network with others that have similar interests. Each year the Michigan Junior Holstein Association makes it a priority to sponsor a trip to the National Holstein Convention. I have attended multiple National Holstein Conventions including Maine in 2005, Wisconsin in 2008, Minnesota in 2010, Virginia in 2011, and Missouri in 2012. Unfortunately, I had to miss this past convention in Indiana because of my commitment to my summer internship. I am so thankful for my National Holstein Convention experiences, and I want other kids to have the opportunities I have had. I have met many of my close friends in the industry through convention, and had the chance to compete at the national level in events like Dairy Bowl. Also, I have served as the Michigan delegate multiple times at the annual junior meeting. Being a delegate for your state, and being able to have a say on what individual holds the next position on the national board, is a pretty cool experience, and I hope more kids from Michigan get that chance. My dairy judging experiences are a huge component of my Holstein story. I started judging when I was nine years old, and now today at 19 years old I am still competing. I met many successes as a junior 4-H’er competing on the state level, but my dairy judging career didn’t really take off until I was old enough to earn my spot on a state team and compete on the national level. My first national contest was in 2010 at the All-American Dairy Show in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Once again, most kids would be pretty nervous for their first contest, but I just looked at it as another opportunity to prove myself. It probably doesn’t hurt that I like to talk – a lot – so that has always helped me with giving oral reasons! I ended up placing second overall in the 4-H contest, losing by one point to the first place individual who I am still friends with today. Although losing an entire contest by one point is heartbreaking, I chose to look at it from a different perspective. I had almost won my first national contest, and that one point loss made me want to win even more. A year later I competed in my second national contest which was held at the North American International Livestock Exposition in Louisville, Kentucky, where I finished 8th overall. The next year was my opportunity to compete in the Superbowl, my shot at the Stanley Cup, the World Series! I finally worked my way up to the Madison team! The World Dairy Expo contest held in Madison, WI is the contest that everyone is out to win,

and in 2012 my 4-H team did just that! We had a dream of a day, winning the 4-H contest by 44 points. Not only did we win the high team overall, but we also earned a trip to Europe, and took home the gold in the Oral Reasons category as well. Individually, I was 9th, with all four of our team members being named All-Americans by placing in the top 25. It was an once-in-a-lifetime experience, and I will never forget the emotions I felt after Michigan was announced as number one team. This contest was also very special to me because one of my very best friends, Megan Bush, was on the team with me.The summer of 2013 was all about dairy for me and extreme personal growth. It was the summer between my first and second years in the two-year Dairy Management program at Michigan State. Each one of the students in this program is required to complete a full summer internship on a dairy farm. My particular situation was unique. My program advisor was also my judging coach, a person with whom I have built a pretty strong relationship. He knew I wanted to get out of the state of Michigan for my internship, so he sent me to Heinze Dairy in Portage, Wisconsin. Honestly, the first three weeks of my internship were awful. I missed home, my family, my friends, and my own cows. I was devastated that I had to miss the Michigan State Holstein Show that I have attended every year for the past 10 years. I never thought that I would be strong enough to finish three whole months away, and I wanted to quit. I wanted to quit, but I didn’t. I pushed through every day, and eventually things started to look up. My boss, Mark Heinze, is the judging coach for the Columbia County judging teams in Wisconsin. He knew of my judging history, and invited me to be one of his assistant coaches along with Justin Langer. Of course I jumped at the opportunity to help; it would be a good way to meet more kids and to use my skills to hopefully strengthen theirs. Needless to say, I absolutely fell in love with the judging kids who ranged from age 9-17. They actually took the advice I gave and applied to their way of doing things. I worked

with these kids all summer. Two of the younger girls became the little sisters I never had and I absolutely loved them. The first contest for the judging crew was the district contest. Our junior team ended up on top and it was one of the best feelings I have experienced! Watching these kids grow and develop their skills and then being rewarded for it was just amazing. Placing first allowed them to continue on and compete at the Wisconsin state contest. They ended up second overall there and it was another great accomplishment. These judging kids became a big part of my life this summer, and I am still in contact with them to this day. I got a brief holiday from my summer internship to participate in the trip that my Madison 4-H team had earned the previous fall. On June 19, 2013 my Madison 4-H team, guided by our suspender-wearing coach Joe Domecq, boarded a nine hour flight to Scotland to be a part of the International Livestock Tour. Once we were in Scotland we were joined by several other teams who all earned the trip by placing well in their respective contests. While in Scotland we stopped at the Royal Highland Show and competed in the Young Farmers judging contest. Let me make it clear that we were only against the other Americans on the trip, and that the Scottish judgers give reasons a lot differently than what we are used to! Also, you judge in pairs in this contest so our team of four was divided into two. My partner was my best friend I mentioned earlier, Megan Bush. We ended up being the top pair overall and our other two teammates finished third. After we finished our Scotland adventures we headed over to London, England where we spent a few days touring the city. We toured many farms to learn their way of doing things. Our final destination was Ireland which was by far my favorite place leg of the trip. Everyone was so friendly and inviting, and seemed to love Americans! I met so many awesome people on this trip that I will stay friends with for a lifetime. Being in the same place with a bunch of other people who love what you love is an incredible feeling and makes you feel like you belong. This was truly a trip of a lifetime and I never would have guessed that judging dairy cows would have given me this opportunity to travel the world, but I am so thankful that it did! When I returned to the states I got to spend the Fourth of July with my family, and then it was right back to Wisconsin to pick up where I had left off with my internship. Being an assistant coach wasn’t the only extra-curricular activity I got to do in Wisconsin. I also helped select classes for each judging contest all over the state of Wisconsin. At the district judging contest I was asked to judge showmanship and listen to junior oral reasons. It was amazing to me that these Badgers welcomed a Spartan and encouraged me to participate in so many of their summer events. I also headed down to UW-Madison to help run the Badger Dairy Camp for five days. I was in charge of all the heifers that were being used in the camp. I also helped teach a judging course during the camp. I met a lot of really great UW students during this camp and can’t imagine my life without them. I even convinced my boss to let me take a show string to his county fair. It started with one cow, and

quickly grew by four heifers. The highlight of my show string was that I exhibited the Reserve Grand Champion Cow of the day and won senior showmanship. Not only did I get to have all of these different experiences, but I also got help welcome my boss and his wife’s first child into the world! My internship started out rough, and I honestly didn’t think I would make it through, but I did. I gained so much experience spending a summer out in Wisconsin and everyone took me in as one of their own. I was pushed to try a lot of new things without my usual support system at my side. I don’t think those individuals will ever know how much their kindness and trust in me meant to me and I always look forward to being reunited with them. Last fall I was on the Post- Secondary dairy judging team for Michigan State University. The three other individuals on my team had very little prior judging experience, which was new for me as I had always been surrounded by other proficient cattle evaluators. My coach urged me to step up and be a leader to my teammates, which didn’t take much convincing! It took me a little while to adjust going from a highly competitive and experienced team, to a team who was brand new to the topic. I pushed my teammates every single day and tried hard to give them the motivation they needed to perform to their highest potential. Our first contest as a team was back in Madison. I really didn’t know what to expect. I had a brand new team, and the competition was different. We ended up placing sixth overall! Individually I was third overall, and won the oral reasons portion of the contest. We as a team really wanted to crack top five, but we were still happy with sixth, especially seeing as the top few teams were a lot more experienced than ours. This contest gave my team-mates a taste of what dairy judging contest were like, and it made them hungry to do better at our next contest. Our next stop was Louisville. I felt like the team made a lot of progress since the Madison competition and I was excited to see how we would do. Once again, I was third overall and won oral reasons! What can I say - I like to talk! Most importantly, my team finished third overall in the contest, and each one of my teammates had their names called for placing in a breed! We were ecstatic! Everyone’s blood, sweat, and tears and finally paid off, and we were more than happy with our performance! On the car ride home I was being the typically competitive natured Hayleigh and was breaking down my performance. I realized that I lost winning both contests by a combined total of 7 points. Honestly, that hurt me a little bit. I always think to myself “if I would’ve switched that pair,” or “if I wouldn’t

have bombed that Guernsey class.” Thankfully I had my aunt Jess along on that trip to knock some sense into my head and make me realize that I just won oral reasons at two national contests in a row, and that I should be extremely proud of that. I definitely was. Dairy judging has not only afforded me the skills and opportunities to network, but has strengthened my public speaking and time management skills. In December 2013, I completed my two-year Ag Tech degree in Dairy Production at Michigan State University. I am currently a sophomore working toward a degree in Communications. At MSU I am a part of the Dairy Club serving as the Membership and Promotions chair, and work on the planning committee for the Spartan Spectacular Calf Sale. I try to get new faces involved and encourage others to take advantage of the many opportunities available through this industry. My Holstein story had been a whirlwind of hard work and excitement, and I can’t wait to see where this ride will take me next! The dairy industry and the many wonderful people I have met through it have developed me into the person I am today, and I want to do everything in my power to give back to this great community of dairy enthusiasts. I wouldn’t have had the success or experiences I have had without the constant support systems of my friends and family, who often believe in me more than I believe in myself. Hard work truly does pay off. Although my grandpa sold the herd ten years ago, and now only have show heifers and a select few cows left it hasn’t stopped me We sold out when I was just beginning my Holstein career, but I didn’t put my dreams on hold. Maybe going to back to the farm was never intended to be my destiny, but I sure as heck know that my heart will always lie in the hands of this industry, and that my burning passion for it will never die out. That little girl you’ve been reading about is now a mature, passionate, hardworking young adult and is still working towards her dreams each and every day. I am Hayleigh Geurink, and these sixteen years of my Holstein story are just the beginning!

To be named a Master Breeder is one of the highest honors a Registered Holstein breeder could achieve and this year’s winner is the epitome of this award.

The 2014 Master Breeder of the Michigan Holstein Association is Doug Long of Long-Haven Farms, Inc. in Clayton, MI.From the time he could walk, Doug wanted to be around the barn, tractors and cows. His early farming antics at three years of age proved a bit too adventurous when the hired man came racing into the milk barn yelling that Doug had climbed into the bull pen. His dad, Carlos Long, grabbed a pitch fork and sprinted to the pen made of thick iron bars that could hold a big mature bull in, but apparently not keep a young boy out. The bull was tossing little Doug around like a soccer ball using his nose to push him around in the manure. Carlos climbed over the fence and used his pitch fork to get the bull away and retrieve the boy, who was quite a sight covered in manure from head to toe. Doug’s parents broke every speed limit racing their howling, filthy, smelly toddler to the emergency room for examination, but not a single bone was broken. A thorough cleaning up and a stern lecture about staying out of the bull pen followed, but it had been proven that day: “you can’t keep a true farm boy down.”From being tossed around in a bull pen to managing the renown Long-Haven herd, Doug has learned much and accomplished much. Here are just a few of Doug’s accomplishments as he developed the Long-Haven herd.

• To date there are 109 cows with the Long-Haven prefix scored EX – of these, three have scored EX-94, three have scored EX-93 and three have scored EX-92 and there are numerous multiple E cows; hundreds more have

scored VG.

• 40 cows with the Long-Haven prefix have earned Gold Medal Dam status, 62 have earned Dam of Merit status, and of these, 29 have earned BOTH Gold Medal Dam and Dam of Merit status.• Seven Long-Haven bulls have earned Gold Medal status.• One 16th generation EX, one 13th generation EX and 10 12th generation EX cows have been developed at Long-Haven.• Longs have bred a unanimous All-American and All-Canadian winner and numerous All-Michigan and Reserve All-Michigan winners, and showed champions at the Michigan Spring and Summer Shows, the Ohio Spring Show and at the North American International Livestock Exposition.

Doug, in partnership with his father, Carlos, is a previous recipient of the MSU Dairy Farmer of the Year Award.Doug has been a member of the National Holstein Association and Michigan Holstein Association for more than 50 years, is a former Vice President and President of the Michigan Holstein Association, represented Michigan as a delegate at numerous national Holstein conventions over the years, and served on state and national sale committees.Today, Doug farms with his son, Scott and together they milk 68 cows – 60 of these 68 cows are homebred and all but one of the herd’s 82 heifers are homebred. The herd’s current rolling herd average is 32,044M 3.7%F 3.2%P and its BAA is 111.6 – 20 EX, 33 VG and 4 GP. Doug’s breeding philosophy is pretty straightforward – cows need to have solid type so they can produce large volumes of milk, breed back and last many lactations – and the herd’s tagline says it all, “Where the cows pay the bills.”Congratulations to the 2014 Michigan Holstein Association Master Breeder, Doug Long, Long-Haven Farms.

The winter weather weakened just a bit for the MHA spring foundation sale, it was mostly above zero for the whole week! The bidding was hot and the prices were good as 70 lots were sold on

the second day of spring. There were 82 registered buyers at this year’s sale bidding on cattle from 54 consignors. The sale average was $2923 and many of the sale animals stayed over and were shown at the spring show the next day.The high selling animal of the day was Lot #1, View-Home McC Arizona-ET, consigned by Country Dairy of New Era. Arizona is an early De-Su BKM McCutchen 1174-ET daughter out of Pine-Tree 2149Robst 4846-ET, the tremendous genomic transmitting Robust with 8 sons heading for bull studs, 12 daughters over 2400GTPI and offspring being sold all over for up to $100,000. Jim Hackman of Manitowoc, Wisconsin was the final bidder and bought Arizona for $15,000.The second high seller of the day, was Lot #8, Budjon-Vail P Dalton-Red-ET, consigned by Budjon Farms and Peter & Lyn Vail of Lomira, Wisconsin. She brought $5600 and went to Double-Eagle Dairy of Middleton and Kelvin Webster of Laingsburg. The volume buyers for this wear’s sale were the Schafers of Jem-Lot Dairy in Westphalia. They loaded up their trailer with eight head for the trip home. Thank you so much for your support of our sale. Many of the supplies like hay, grain and bedding for the sale were donated by Michigan Holstein Association members and supporters, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your help in making this sale possible. We thank the fitters and the ringmen and the auctioneer for a job well done. We especially want to thank the MSU Dairy Club for all their hard work as they always do all the skut work for us, getting ready for and during the sale. For those of you that came to buy and went home empty handed, please, don’t be discouraged. Next year, we on the sale committee will do our best to get some more great genetics to be in next year’s spring foundation sale, so come on back and try your luck and be the final bidder on some of the midwest’s best Holstein genetics! Respectfully submited, Ike Hunt, Sale Co-Chairperson

In MemoriamAaron James ClarkFebruary 6, 1992 - May 4, 2014Aaron James Clark, age 22, of Sears, passed away unexpectedly, on Sunday, May 4, 2014. He was born on February 6, 1992 in Cadillac, to Alan and Darla (Hamel) Clark. Aaron graduated from Chippewa Hills High School in 2010. He obtained a certificate in diesel mechanics from Lincoln Technology Institute in Indianapolis. The last four months he has enjoyed working as a machine operator for Morgan Compost in Sears.

Aaron attended the Sears Church of God, was actively involved in 4-H when he was younger and was known to be everybody’s buddy. Aaron enjoyed fishing, John Deere tractors, hunting especially with his uncle Tom Rodgers and was a real people person. He was an avid U of M fan, and liked the Detroit Tigers, Green Bay Packers and was proud of getting his first coyote pelt this year.

His beloved family and many friends will forever cherish the many stories and memories they have of a particular, kind hearted and in his own words “ready-to-fix-it” man. He is survived by his parents Alan and Darla Clark of Sears; one brother Christopher Davis of Cadillac; one sister Baylee Clark of Sears; grandmothers, Lethel Hamel of Lake City and Joanie Clark of Evart and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, extended family members and friends.

Aaron was preceded in death by his grandparents Clyde (Coralie) Clark; grandpa Robert Hamel, paternal great-grandma Gertrude Bartholomew in 2014; and two aunts that he was close to, Kathy Garcia and Carol Leonard. Memorials in Aaron’s name can be made to the Sears Church of God.
