Community Placement Brief –English Tutor

The Vision; Community Placements

Here at Middlesex University we want students to be at the heart of our local community and for

the local community to see the University at its heart.

We are excited to be offering Community Placements across the borough. These are not

volunteering opportunities they are paid placements. They give our students the chance to develop their

academic studies in a real world setting. They also give our students the chance to give something back

into your area.

All MDXSU placements are paid in line with the London Living Wage Foundation (currently £9.40

per hour).

The Project; Somali Bravanese Welfare Association

The Association provides advice, information and support for the Somali Bravanese community

living in and around the borough of Barnet. These services include befriending older, socially isolated

community members and supporting members with language difficulties. They also run an after school

programme for local children and teenagers aged 11 plus. They are keen to support integration into the

local community and across faiths.

The Placement; English Tutor

You will help a small group of children of secondary school age with their English studies (up to

GCSE level) on a Saturday afternoon from 3pm – 5pm. You will teach the children, provide study materials

and set homework.

You will use your subject knowledge, your interpersonal skills and your communication skills to

support pupils to improve their understanding and to complete their work with confidence and to the best

of their ability.

Your presence will inspire a new generation of high achievers who will aspire to realise their full

potential.

You will enable an amazing group of young people to participate fully in public life.

Role Profile

English Tutor x1 opportunities

Salary Band: London Living Wage (currently £9.40 per hour) Hours: 2 hours per week, Saturday 3 – 5 pm. Duration: November 2016 – June 2017, term-time only Location: Barnet Homes, 1255 High Road, London N20 0EJ

PLACEMENT PURPOSE

Provide tuition for secondary school children for 2 hours a week in English.

Support to develop their skills, knowledge and confidence.

Ensure that pupils complete their work to the best of their ability.

Act as a role model for learning and education.

What is the recruitment schedule? Applications close at Midnight on Sunday 20th November. We will be completing the shortlisting process as soon as possible following this time. Please note however that due to the number of applications that the students’ union receives for placement opportunities, we are unable to offer personal feedback on applications. Shortlisted candidates will be invited to interview. The interview will be held on Friday 25th November and will take place at Barnet Homes, 1255 High Road, London N20 0EJ.

placements we offer each year and students and staff alike find

working together a hugely empowering opportunity.

From September 2016 we will be offering over 30 opportunities.
