PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Although I do love summer, I also enjoy September, with the temperatures cooling off, and life getting back to its usual routine - although I’m not sure that ‘usual’ is the right word to describe anything about this year.

Of course, our big excitement in the community this month is the playground build on Sunlake Road, sched-uled for September 21 to 28. This is such an accomplish-ment for our amazing playground committee, and I can’t thank them, or the numerous sponsors, enough. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

We are also excited about the reopening of our Out of School Care program, which closed in March when the schools shut down. The staff have gone to great lengths to ensure a safe and enjoyable environment. We also have our programs starting up with strict adherence to the AHS guidelines. See our website for more information.

I’m sorry to report that our VP, Rick Cunningham, has re-signed from the board due to some personal issues. Rick was a dedicated member of the board this past year; we

will all miss him and sure wish him all the best. Many thanks to Wayne Hewitt, who volunteered to take over Rick’s position on the Ops Committee and to Devin Elkin for stepping into the VP role until our AGM in November.

Speaking of the AGM, please give some thought to join-ing our board. We really are a fun group; we meet once a month and going forward, we will have the option of meeting in person or online. We need a Vice President and are also looking for someone to take on a new Di-rector position as a Business Liaison to see what we can do to support businesses in our community. Any inter-est or questions, please contact me.

And, finally, in some personally wonderful news, my husband and I are thrilled that our daughter, her hus-band, and two children have recently purchased a house in Sundance and will live about an 8-minute walk from us! Not that we’d stalk them or anything, but if they are drinking wine or having fun without us… we’ll know!

All for now. Hope you all have an excellent September.

Patsy

PLAYGROUND UPDATE

Surprise! Exciting news! A second playground in our community is getting replaced this fall in addition to the Sunlake Road Playground that the Mid-Sun Community Association has been fundraising for.

The small playground located between Sunvista Close and Sun Harbour Way will be replaced in mid-September as part of the City of Calgary’s “life-cycle” replacement program.

Why is the Sun Harbour playground getting replaced?Because it’s 30 years old!The City of Calgary inspects playgrounds every month between May and October. As playgrounds age and become unsafe, the City of Calgary must remove them. Based on the demographics of the community and the number of other playgrounds in the area, the play-ground will either be replaced, or the area will be “repur-posed” (usually turned into a greenspace with a bench).

When will it be installed?Installation is expected to occur in the first two weeks of September. After the safety inspection, the park will be open for play!

Why was there no fundraising for this playground?Small playgrounds like the Sun Harbour playground will be replaced automatically and do not involve the com-munity association. The City will partner with the com-munity associations only when the playground footprint is large, such as for the playground at Sunlake Road. In this case, the Community Association must fundraise in order to pay for a playground that will suit the footprint.

Additional fundraising for the Sun Harbour playground was not an option.

Did the Mid-Sun Community Association know this playground was getting replace?Yes! The Mid-Sun Community Association’s Playground Liaison, Erin Delamont, was contacted by our City Parks representative in the spring. We were asked what equipment we would ideally like to see at the playground, so we put it to the community via Facebook. Swings and slides that would engage a wide range of ages were requested—and the final design meets this criteria wonderfully!

So, remind me, what’s the status of the Sunlake Road Playground?Oh, we’re so glad you asked! The Sunlake Road Playground will be installed between September 21 and 25. We’d love to celebrate with the community so check out our Facebook page at www.facebook.com/midsunplayground or email [email protected] to make sure you are informed of grand opening plans!

Stay playful!Erin DelamontMid-Sun Playground Committee Chairperson

MID-SUN COMMUNITY GARDENOur community garden has had the right combination of water and sun to show exceptional growth consid-ering how late in the season we were finally able to plant. The four cherry and five apple trees added to our two fruit groves are doing well and on target for a good crop next season. The hundred or so native spe-cies planted on our border berm have been prolific with both blooms and fruit. We are in the process of labelling each species on the berm as an aid to education. The fall season is fast approaching.

75th MIDNAPORE SCOUT GROUP Scouting in the Community

Our 2020/2021 season is just about to start, and you are all invited to participate. While the Scouting program will be slightly modified in response to this this new normal - we will still be offering a challenging program to all youth. 75th Midnapore Scout Group welcomes all youth regardless of gender or ability. If your daughter or son wants to make new friends, have fun, take on some challenges, and improve their leadership skills – Scouting is for them!

Registration for the 2020/2021 scouting year is com-pletely online through the www.scouts.ca website. You will be asked to enter your postal code and a list of groups in this area will be presented for you to select from. For this year, Scouts Canada is extending current member registrations to the end of December 2020 and is also offering free registration for the period of Sep-tember 2020 until December 2020 to any new mem-bers. This is a great opportunity to have your youth try us out and join the over 50 million other people that are engaged in Scouting around the world.

As the world’s largest educational youth movement, Scouting delivers a youth programme that offers young people the opportunity to develop their knowledge and competencies, yielding significant results. In fact, an international study done in 2018 aiming to measure Scouting’s Impact on the Development of Young People found that Scouts scored 16.2% higher on life skills and employability, 12% higher on leadership and 6% higher in resolving problems than young people who are not in Scouting. The details of this study can be found on the World Scouting web page at scout.org

So, what do our youth members say about the program?

•Dawson L one of our Scout-aged youth took the time to say “What I like most about being a scout is the op-portunities I can obtain such as going to a Jamboree. Jamborees offer tons of fun activities and having expe-riences that I’ll remember forever”

•Brooke C one of our Venturer Scouts wanted to share, “The best thing I liked about Vents this year was be-ing able to plan what I wanted to do and to meet new people. Definitely made long lasting friendships.”

If you want to review how we are going to operate dur-ing this COVID-19 period, you can find information and policies that all Canadian Scouting Groups (including 75th Midnapore) are going to follow. This information is available from scouts.ca.

Adult volunteers are always needed – either to help run the programs or to offer a specific activity to a section (like how to dehydrate food or how to read a map or how to build a birdhouse). Time commitment can be as small or large as you want. Note that all volunteers need to have a Police Record Check completed prior to en-gaging with the youth.

If you are interested in getting further information on our program or have any questions, please send an email to [email protected] and we will get back to you.

COVID-19In March of this year, Alberta Health Services ordered facilities such as ours to close due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Restrictions were gradually eased which allowed us to open our facility to members on May 30th. At the time of this writing, conditions remain in place that by the time of this publication, we hope are eased which will allow us to offer more to members as we return to a more normal operation.

We recognize that many people have suffered through ‘quarantine fatigue’ and we gratefully acknowledge and thank those members who have been both patient and supportive of our actions to re-duce the risk and spread of COVID-19.

AGM Please be advised that the annual general meeting is now sched-uled for Wednesday, September 30th, 2020 at 7:00 pm in our Lake room. Please check the website www.midnaporelake.ca or Facebook for updated information on our AGM.

Midnapore Residents Be Proud of Your Community I wanted to take time to thank the residents of Midnapore for being the kind of people in the kind of place where people want to live. I moved into this community 5 years ago, and am always so impressed when I go for a walk with the way people take care of their home and yard. I have seen so much extra effort go into the gardens this year – it’s such a pleasure to go out for a stroll.

It takes a lot of time, attention, and also funds to keep your home well maintained, and I can see that most everyone is doing a fabulous job. This is now considered an older neighbourhood, but I see very little in the way of degeneration. Paint is fresh, lawns mowed, weeds absent, flowers abound!

I also see lots of neighbours congregating on the front lawns visiting and supporting each other. With all that has gone on this year with COVID-19, I thought I would thank all of you who are doing all you can to build and maintain this incredible community of Midnapore.

Thank you everyone. I appreciate it.

Your neighbour,CR

TAKE ON WELLNESS

You’re not alone if isolation and the fear of becoming sick is giving you the blues. Deep down, we know it’s not healthy for us to be alone and fearful. Science backs up our intuition: living under constant stress limits our creative, problem-solving brains to flight-fight-freeze instincts, where every interaction with people is gauged as a threat to safety.

It’s easy to overlook mental self-care when fear of survival is number one. That’s why it’s really important to make manageable, regu-lar commitments to mental health. It’s deeply intertwined with physical health. Meditation is one of many tools for mental-self care. It’s free, can be done anywhere, anytime, with no special equipment.

Meditation is sometimes misunderstood. Some people tell me they can’t clear their heads or sit still. They’d rather do exercise to relieve stress, or they don’t think it fixes problems. Meditation is not emptying our minds, forcing ourselves to relax, and pretend everything is okay. Nor is it a planning and strategy session, or a replacement for exercise.

Today, try this short, easy meditation: sit quietly and count ten deep, easy breaths. Notice where your thoughts wander when you lose focus. No-tice how you feel. Fidgety, overwhelmed, wor-

ried, reliving past events? Take two more deep breaths. Relax your belly and shoulders. Notice how good that feels. Remember that feeling for later. After, start paying attention to how often your mind is occupied with those thoughts and emotions. That’s a good clue about how much stress you’re under.

Meditation is a physical and mental discipline of silent attention to train focus, reach equanimity with our thoughts and emo-tions, and achieve compassion for self and others. Just like with exercise, regular practice delivers the awesome side-effects: self-control, keeping cool under pressure, sleeping better, and more.

Summer is sacred in Canada while September heralds the end of long nights, and a sense of renewal and reflection as children head back to school. Who would have predicted in January 2020 that the backdrop for return to school would include COVID-19! Alberta prides itself on having quality education at both the K-12 and post secondary levels. A strong history of excellence in learning comes with high expectations for both parents and students alike. Post secondaries across the province have been diligently looking at delivering quality education for the fall, and for all higher learning institutions across the province, the bulk of their instruction will be online. Many institutions felt that, given the wide student population age range (18 to 108), and as many as 400 students in larger lecture halls, the shift to online education for the upcoming semester was necessary. For the younger K-12 students, much of the conversation has focussed around the term “near normal”. On July 21, with a follow up on August 4, Minister of Education Adriana LeGrange announced there will be a return to masked, in-school learning this fall. Jurisdictions across Alberta have experienced different rates of COVID, and the provincial return to school kit provided to local school boards enables the flexibility to adjust and adapt to local needs, circumstances, and community infection rates. Nothing about COVID is easy or without some level of personal, professional or community anxiety. That is the reality. But we know COVID has been hard on all of us emotionally, financially, and physically. Having personally survived a Tsunami, a bombing raid, and having to abandon a sinking ship gives me the perspective to be grateful for life, to not take anything for granted, and to recognize the need for calm and resilience in supporting Alberta’s next generation of leaders in facing life’s challenges. Resiliency allows us to move ahead knowing that our sense of “normal” may be adjusted but that collectively we have the fortitude to persevere and prevail just as our indigenous people and settlers demonstrated when building Alberta. As print deadlines for our local Great News publications are a few weeks out, please note that some of the back to school information provided may be amended prior to distribution. I would recommend following me on Facebook for more current information or signing up for our e-newsletter. I am forever grateful for Dr. Hinshaw and her team who are in constant communication with our Premier and Ministers in providing timely scientific advice on the most current data in protection of Albertans health and well-being.As always, my office is open for virtual meetings and calls. Please do not hesitate to reach out, as listening to your questions, insights, and concerns assists me in my advocacy on your behalf.
