Trial Bay Gaol was opened in 1886 as a Public Works Prison, utilised in World War 1 as a German Internment Camp and closed in 1918. Located in the Arakoon State Conservation Area, just 5km east of South West Rocks, it is one of the most popular attractions on the Mid North Coast of New South Wales.

Visitors can explore the gaol and museum, watch whales (in season), picnic or BBQ, go swimming, boating and bushwalking. Tracks vary from an easy 10 minutes to four hours each way to Smoky Cape Lighthouse. Enjoy camping or caravanning on site, with the camp grounds providing hot showers, flushing toilets and washing machines.

National Parks and Wildlife Service runs qualified discovery programs throughout the year and guided tours of the Gaol during New South Wales school holidays.

Self-guided tours of the Gaol are also available between 9am and 4pm daily.

Only 10 minutes drive away, located in Hat Head National Park is Smoky Cape Lighthouse, the highest lighthouse in New South Wales. Bookings are essential for camping and all guided tours during school holidays.V

WIRES (the NSW Wildlife Information and Rescue Service) is the largest wildlife rehabilitation organisation in Australia. It is a voluntary, non-profit, non-political organisation operating across NSW.

A dynamic and forward-thinking organisation, WIRES has established a network of thousands of volunteer rescuers, carers and veterinarians who rescue and rehabilitate sick, injured or orphaned native animals, then release them into their natural habitat.

If you find an injured native animal:

• Gently cover the animal with a towel in an escape proof box

• Place the box ina warm, quiet, dark room and do not distrurb

• Call WIRES immediately on (02) 8977 3333

• Do not attempt to feed, handle or display the animal. Stress associated with human contact can result in death.

• Lock your cats and dogs in at night and secure a noisy bell to your cat and dogs collar

Reward Your Senses at Sea Acres It’s 9 am and Sea Acres Rainforest Centre boardwalk has just opened for the day. The air is fresh with morning dew and the scent of ancient Bolwarra blends with the primeval smells of this pristine rainforest. Above the forest floor on the elevated boardwalk we sense the intricate web of life that surrounds us and makes the sub-tropical coastal rainforest at Sea Acres unique.

It’s hard to believe we are only 4 km from the bustle of the Port Macquarie town centre.

Sea Acres is operated by the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) and includes the popular Rainforest Café, run by French chef Jean Louis and wife Cherie. There is a gift and souvenir shop and the Centre is open from 9 am to 4.30 pm each day.

Take advantage of the guided rainforest tours included in the entry fee or explore at your own pace. To enter the rainforest is to step into another world. It’s cool, the light is dim and the vegetation lusciously green. Catbirds calling, giant strangler figs, lace fungi, and freshly fallen fruits from animals feeding high in the canopy - the rainforest rewards the senses.

About two thirds of the way around the boardwalk, glimpses of the ocean through the forest remind us we are close to the sea – Miners Beach is just 200 metres away.

The clean waterways of Great Lakes will supply you with a fresh array of fruits from the sea. The twin town of Forster-Tuncurry has fine seafood cafes and shops and the name Tuncurry actually means ‘plenty fish’ in the local Wormi language. The local

Great Lakes Winery at Wootton, tucked away via a short scenic drive from the pacific Highway, has the perfect 2006 semillon to accompany the fresh seafood. Wallis Lakes is famous for its succulent Sydney Rock Oysters.

While touring, head through the Great Lakes inland nature pockets for local fresh fruit and vegetables – on your way to the scenic Manning Valley hinterland.

As you drive around the Manning Valley, you will come across the township of Wingham. West of Taree, it is an authentic country town that has managed to merge the charm of yesteryear with the best of modern-day attributes. One of these modern-day attributes is Duck Under the Table, a purpose built cookery school. Dare not pass Wingham without allowing plenty of time to enjoy a standout gourmet experience at Bent on Food. This state and regional award winning providore is a drawcard in the rustic Wingham setting.

The cosmopolitan coastal city of Port Macquarie and its laid back villages of Camden Haven and Wauchope is the perfect holiday destination to tour and taste the Mid North Coast.

Port Macquarie is the home to the 2007 State Tourism Award winner for Restaurant & Catering – Restaurant Splash. Their fresh and innovative ideas gather plenty of attention and you will soon see why they are a multi award winning restaurant.

For something different, paint the town red at Ricardoes Tomatoes. Here you

The largest seaside resort town of South West Rocks on the Macleay Valley Coast (Kempsey) has a variety of cafes and restaurants. The Trial Bay Kiosk is part of the historic Trial Bay Goal and its scrummy food and breathtaking views is a great place for breakfast, lunch or teas.

Tour further north to arrive at the Nambucca Valley. Here you will find Australia’s most famous pub, The Pub With No Beer. Legend has it however, that it once ran out. Song writer Gordon Parsons immortalized this story in what became a famous Australian song recorded by Slim Dusty. Today it is a boutique brewery, exporting beers all around the world.

The charming town of Bellingen is the place to head to for a cultural, café precinct experience. Here you can sit outside all day as you move from one café to the next, each with its own style and flavours. The award winning ‘chef’s hat’ restaurant, Number 2 Oak Street will further impress you while you visit Bello.

Coffs Harbour is the vibrant city centre of the Coffs Coast, celebrating a unique multicultural style. Port Stephens was first noted by Europeans in May 1770 when Captain James Cook referred to Port Stephens in his log as "an opening forming a bay".

He went on to describe; "Wind southerly in the day and in the night westerly, a gentle breeze and clear weather. At 4pm past at a distance of one mile a low rocky point which I named Point Stephens... on the north side of this point is an inlet which I called Port Stephens that appears from the masthead to be sheltered from all winds".

Holiday havensThe hardest decision you’ll have to make on your Great Lakes holiday is where to stay. While Forster-Tuncurry,

actually two towns linked by a bridge across Wallis Lake, is always popular, the many tranquil townships scattered throughout the area all have their own unique charm.

Twenty minutes south of Forster is Pacific Palms, named after the area’s cabbage tree palms. It’s a good place from where to explore Booti Booti National Park, Wallis and Smiths lakes, and the sensational surf beaches of Boomerang and Blueys. Seal Rocks, 40 minutes’ drive south of Forster, is the ideal destination if you like bushwalking, surfing or scuba diving.

Seal Rocks got its name from the Australian fur seals’ favourite sunning spot, which is on the rugged rocks just across the water from Sugarloaf Point Lighthouse, a short walk from the town and past a spectacular blowhole.

The enchanting Seven Harp Ensemble makes a welcome return to the area, having performed to a sold-out-and-standing audience in Kendall in 2010. Wauchope Lasiandra Festival is celebrating its 28th Anniversary, with a wide array of wonderful community events involved. Kick starting the festival will be the Rotary Swing Supper Dance to be held on Saturday 18th February in the Wauchope Showground Hall. A wonderful night is assured with musical entertainment by the “The Black Magic Big Band”. Cost is just $25 per person with BYO nibbles and drinks the format. A light supper will be provided. The first European in the Wauchope area was Surveyor John Oxley who named Mount Seaview and the Hastings River (after Lord Warren Hasting, Governor of India) as he passed through the area in 1818.

By 1820 cedar was being cut in the district and in 1821 Governor Lachlan Macquarie established Port Macquarie as a penal colony. By 1826 there were numerous experiments with sugar cane along the banks of the Hastings River.

In 1828 a number of land grants were made along the Hastings River. In 1836 the village of Wauchope came into existence. Captain Robert Andrew Wauch (he had dropped ‘ope’ from the end of his name as a result of a family dispute) paid a deposit on 760

acres on King Creek. The property was named “Wauchope” and it was from this the town would eventually grow.

Today Wauchope is a beautiful town endowed with a traditional timber-milling heritage. Wonderful places of historic importance are located throughout the town and in the surrounding areas a must see destination for all.

Trial Bay Gaol which opened in 1886, as a works prison and utilised in World War One as a German Interment Camp closed in 1918, is located in the Arakoon State Conservation Area just 5 kilometres east of the coastal town of South West Rocks.

Being one of the most popular attractions on the mid north coast of NSW, with spectacular scenery ranging from the extensive gaol ruins, to the natural beauty of Trial Bay, the coast and beaches.

Visitors can camp, watching the sun set over the bay, or use the day facilities of BBQ’s and picnic areas, tour the Gaol and museum, go bushwalking, whale watching or swimming.

Walks range from an easy 10 minutes up to difficult, 4 hours. There is a licensed restaurant in the park open from 8am to 3pm.

National Parks and Wildlife Service runs qualified discovery programs throughout the area, evening tours of the Gaol are run on Tuesdays and Thursdays during NSW school holidays.

The guided tours last for approximately 1.5 hours. Self-guided tours of the Gaol are also available between 9.00am -4.00pm daily.

Whilst in the area visit Smoky Cape Lighthouse, in Hat Head National Park, being the highest in NSW and only 10 minutes drive away from the Gaol.

Bookings are essential for camping and all guided tours during School Holidays.

Carobana

Carobana is Coffs harbour’s own working confectionery factory – family owned and operated since 1980

Carobana is a real working factory. Most of our production is for wholesale and we manufacture to order. This makes every week different and whatever is happening on the day you get to see. The best time to visit is mornings from 10am to about 2.30pm. Best days are Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, these are production days. Thursdays and Fridays are despatch days and Saturdays are just the shop.

Carobana has been open to the public for just 19 years, but making our confectionery for nearly 30 years. Our tree lined drive brings visitors to the open park-like space of our grounds, where picnics and other activities are held. The covered, table area is used by most visitors who enjoy sitting with a cuppa or a snack to watch the local wildlife, or use the new bbq facilities.

Once inside the factory, the retail shop offers a range of sweets to tempt most taste buds. Honeycombs and brittles are the most popular lines (we use a tonne of sugar every 8 days). The coated lines give the biggest choice and tastings are available.

Watch the honeycomb being made in the kitchen and you get to taste a slither of fresh honeycomb right from the 5kg slab. If the coating line is in production, again close up watching and a little taste.

For a great walk in the rainforest only 5km from Coffs Harbour, you have to visit Bruxner Park Flora Reserve. In addition to several signposted walking trails, there is also a fantastic lookout point over all of Coffs Harbour – Sealy Lookout – at 310 metres above sea level.

The walking tracks at Bruxner Park are only a 10-minute drive from the CBD, which make them the closest rainforest walks to the Coffs Harbour city centre. These bushwalks are easily accessible that you’ll have no excuse not to go there at least once.

Creek Trail. This one-way trail (approx. 1km, 20-30 mins return) joins the Rainforest Walk at Halfway Creek so it’s easy to combine both walks. You can also walk back via the road and check out The Vincent Tree, one of the biggest flooded gums in NSW.

Korora Lookout Trail. Easy 20-min return walk along a ridge with great views north along the Coffs coastline and towards the Solitary Islands. Starts from the Scenic Drive about 500m from Sealy Lookout. There are no cafés or shops in the area, so bring your own picnic – picnic tables at Halfway Creek and Swans Road Crossing.

High on the New England Tablelands, east of Dorrigo, Cathedral Rock National Park is the perfect place for a relaxing day trip or camping holiday. The park features sub-alpine heathlands, wildflowers, tall eucalypt forests and giant granite tors.

The magnificent granite boulders are the subjects of many photographs, while a scramble to the top of these giant outcrops is rewarded with fantastic views of the surrounding tablelands. At 1584 metres above sea level, nearby Round Mountain is the highest point on the New England Tablelands.

The variety of eucalypts and wildflowers attracts an abundance of birds, including rose robins, flycatchers and pardalotes. Grey kangaroos and swamp wallabies are often seen feeding on the heathland plants and mosses around the Barokee Rest Area in the late afternoon.

Bushwalkers will enjoy exploring the park’s walking tracks. There are four to choose from: Cathedral Rock Track (5.8km circuit/2.5hrs), Woolpacks Rocks (7.4km return/3hrs), Warrigal Track (1km circuit/30mins) and the more serious Barokee – Native Dog Creek (10.4km one way). Secluded camping is available amid tall banksias and eucalypts at Barokee Camping Area while Native Dog Creek Camping Area is a more spacious site, ideal for caravans and trailers. No bookings are required, but overnight camping fees apply.

Things to see and do

• Bushwalking: Choose from four walks, ranging from an easy half-hour stroll to a serious 10km traverse of the National Park.

• Rock-hopping: Scramble to the summit of Cathedral Rock and enjoy magnificent 360 degree views.

• Camping or picnicking: Enjoy an hour, a day or a weekend relaxing at Barokee or Native Dog Camping Area.

• Bird watching: Marvel at the prolific birdlife attracted to the park’s eucalypts and wildflowers.

Getting There

Cathedral Rock National Park is 60km east of Dorrigo and 70km east of Armidale. There are two main access points. From Dorrigo, turn off the Waterfall Way 4km past Ebor onto Round Mountain Road, a narrow gravel road leading to Barokee Camping Area (8km), which is close to the foot of Cathedral Rock. Or from the Waterfall Way 3km past Ebor, continue onto Guyra Road for another 10km to get to Native Dog Camping Area.
