===================================THOMPSON TAKES MEDALIST HONORS===================================HARBOR SPRINGS – University of Michigan golfer Matt Thompson (Battle Creek) edged teammateand defending champion Joey Garber (Petoskey) for medalist honors at the 100th Michigan Amateur.

Thompson shot 71-69—140 while Garber was just one stroke behind him with 71-70 – 141.

Thompson has played in the Michigan Amateur for the past three years and lost in the final to TomWerkmeister (Kentwood) at Spring Meadows in 2009. At the start of the tournament, Thompson’s goalwas just to make it to match play but after shooting a one-under-par 71 in the first round of stroke playhe raised the bar.

“After seeing what I shot in the first round I had to set a different goal and keep myself motivated,” saidThompson after his round on Wednesday. “So I went out today with the goal of being the medalist. Iwas one over at the turn but I made a couple of long putts on the back nine which really helped me.”

Presentation of the trophy was delayed until Thursday morning due to a long rain delay on Wednesdaythat left nine golfers having to finish their rounds. Thompson is a psychology major at U-M but said allof his knowledge didn’t really help him on the links at Boyne Highlands Resort – The Heather thisweek.

“I didn’t really have a class for golf psychology,” quipped Thompson. “Hopefully I can use somethingI’ve learned this week.”

Thompson acknowledges there is much golf to be played this week but admits it is a great feeling tohave won medalist honors for stroke play.

“Hopefully this isn’t a situation like the President’s Trophy in hockey,” said Thompson. “It was a goodfeeling to achieve my goal. I ran into Joey (Garber) last night and he said he missed a short putt on ninethat put him at 70, one stroke behind me. When I heard that, I thought I might have won.”

====================================================MICHIGAN PGA WOMEN'S OPEN AT CRYSTAL MOUNTAIN====================================================Top women professional and amateur golfers are set to converge on Crystal Mountain’s signatureMountain Ridge course for the Michigan PGA Women’s Open, June 27-29.

2004 – Just a year after becoming the first female to win the Michigan PGA Tournament of Champions,Stacy Snider birdied the final hole of regulation and the first hole of a sudden death playoff to defeatAmy Malinaric for the championship.

2007 – Lisa Strom held a one-stroke lead on the final hole of regulation with Leanna Wicks inside of tenfeet for birdie. From 66 yards, Strom holed-out an eagle to seal her first Open victory.

2008 – Trailing by as many as two strokes in the final round, Connie Ross pulled even with ElaineCrosby on the sixteenth taking the lead on the very next hole. The victory marked an amazingcomeback as it was her first tournament in over five years.

==============================================LPGA FUTURES TOUR PLAYER ADDRESSES DIABETES==============================================LPGA Futures Tour Player Addresses Diabetes At JDRF Children’s Congress

LPGA Futures Tour player Carling Coffing remembers how it felt to be diagnosed with Type 1 diabetesat age 5. That experience nudged her to give up a few days of practice this week for a higher cause.

Coffing has spent the last two days in Washington, D.C., as a special ambassador for the biennial JDRFChildren’s Congress. The Juvenile Diabetes Research Federation (JDRF) gathering assembles more than150 children with Type 1 diabetes to meet face-to-face with some of the nation’s top decision makers inthe United States government.

Page 16: Michigan Golfer News, June 24, 2011

P. 16 M I C H I G A N G O L F E R N E W S - J U N E 2 4, 2 0 1 1

“We’ll take the kids and talk to members of Congress about diabetes awareness,” said Coffing, who hasbeen a diabetic for 20 years. “We’ll talk to them about health care, community awareness of diabetes, access to supplies for those who need help and other issues surrounding the disease.”

This week’s JDRF Children’s Congress features leading figures from the entertainment, television andprofessional sports arenas, including International JDRF Chairman Mary Tyler Moore, Olympicswimmer Gary Hall, Jr., NFL football player Kendall Simmons, ESPN sports anchor Brian Kenny,American Idol singer Crystal Bowersox, “Amazing Race” contestant Nat Strand and Coffing. Theirassignment is to serve as role models or ambassadors for the children this week.

“I’m so excited that I can give a little glimmer of hope to parents and children,” said Coffing, ofMiddletown, Ohio, who will compete in the LPGA Futures Tour’s Island Resort Championship thisweek in Harris, Mich. “I’ve met a lot of parents who are terrified by a new diagnosis. I love to helpthem out.”

Coffing says she draws on her own experience when talking to children about living with the disease. And she tries to help them to see they are not alone.

“I was diagnosed at age 5, but I didn’t tell anybody until I was 18,” said Coffing. “It took me a while torealize there were millions of people who also had diabetes.”

When Coffing talks to children about the disease, she tries to help them with little things that are a partof their daily experience. The golf pro wears an insulin pump around the clock, so she shows childrenhow to “accessorize” their own pumps with stickers. She also encourages children to name their pumpsto personalize the medical instrument that follows them around, 24/7.

“When we talk about these kinds of things -- trying to take the scariness out of it -- I can see thepressure leaving them,” she said.

Talking openly and nationally about her own experience with the disease has been an unexpected by-product of winning last year’s “Big Break Sandals Resorts” show on the Golf Channel. But it has giventhe former Ohio State University college golfer a chance to talk about something very personal.

“Winning the ‘Big Break’ was fantastic, but getting diabetes awareness out there to the world has beenso great,” said Coffing, who is donating 10 percent of her earnings in professional golf to the JDRF. “IfI can control my blood sugar while traveling and eating on the road, anybody can do it. And if I canhelp children become more aware of living with diabetes, I want to be involved.”
