TPA AcknowledgementsFacing my first year as TPA President

was somewhat intimidating because I knew that I would have to facilitate the interactions between so many different areas in order to provide the production the support it deserves. I am so pleased with those who rose to the occasion this year: from new parent volunteers; to existing parent volunteers who expanded their involvement; to the Student Theatre Board members and really the entire cast, crew, tech, and director staff. The fall experience has been fun, and I think that I speak for everyone involved by saying that the co-mingling of the parent volunteers and student board members was a positive move that created a productive and educational synergy.

As a parent of a student theater member, gratitude abounds for Joe and his director staff. They use every opportunity

as a teaching moment, and provide the means for these aspiring young actors and actresses to reach their potential, push their limits, and grow every time they step foot in this auditorium. We applaud their approach and take pride knowing that our children are growing from the Theatre experience.

To my fellow TPA Executive Committee members, thank you for your support, laughter and insight. As we sit in the audience this evening, we anxiously await a fantastic performance of Fame, our 2011 fall drama.

The Morristown High School ShowGram has been recognized for its professional quality and graphic design, most recently nominated by the Paper Mill Playhouse’s Rising Star Awards in the spring of 2010. This recognition is a testament to all the hours the students put in to the MHS ShowGram.

The high-schoolers you see on stage and who work behind the scenes in the production are the same students who created this ShowGram. We start early in the season: working early mornings and late afternoons; spending countless hours rearranging ads, proofreading bios, and double- and triple-checking information; the culmination of which is the program that you now hold in your hands. The design process behind this ShowGram has proven the dedication, teamwork, and creative ingenuity of the Theatre students at Morristown High School. We hope that our efforts have created a memorable ShowGram for parents, student-actors, and the community members in the audience.

With that being said, we would like to thank all the MHS Theatre members involved in the program’s creation. From all the ShowGram crew, please enjoy the show!

Since Barnum in the spring of 2010, we have consciously been making green decisions concerning the responsible production of the ShowGram. Some of these decisions include using local printers to reduce fuel costs while shipping, decreasing the overall number of pages, and producing fewer programs. We feel that our most effective idea is the collection and

reuse of the unwanted ShowGrams at the end of each performance.

So, please excuse us if you got a less-than-new ShowGram. We would appreciate it if you would recycle your ShowGram at the end of the show on the way out; baskets will be available at the door. Thank you again for your continued support in all of the MHS Theatre’s endeavors!

Special Note: The ShowGram has

Over the summer, as most of our peers thought about college, upcoming AP classes, and their anxieties about senior year, we decided to have a pre-season meeting. We organized the old and discussed the new, all in preparation for the drama. It was, once again, Theatre season. So much needed to happen in so little time, and it seemed to us that, between the extravagant plans for a two story set and the massive amount of people crowded into the hallway outside the theater for auditions, it would be a near impossible feat. Somehow though, everything came together.

All of Cast, Crew, and Tech have all worked so well together, and we are confident that this is what will make tonight’s performance memorable for everyone involved. We cannot commend everyone

enough for all of their hard work We truly appreciate the efforts of our director, set designer, tech director, TPA members, and everyone else involved in the production of this production.

And so, we are not just proud, but we are honored to announce this year’s drama, Fame!

Director’s Note“Baby, look at me, and tell me what

you see - you ain’t seen the best of me yet,” is the one lyric from the song “Fame” that resonates with me the most when I look at the faces of all the students involved in this production. I see more than a dedicated, passionate group of Cast, Crew, and ShowGram members; I see potential. I see future presidents, leaders, artists, and of course, Broadway performers. Fame is a play about achieving one’s dreams, but more importantly, it is a play about growth. Like the students in our Theatre program, the characters in Fame are evolving and making profound discoveries about themselves.

Fame has had several incarnations, including a long-running television series, a musical, and a reality-show. Our production is based on the screenplay of the original 1980 film, and introduced the title song, “Fame”, which instantly became the anthem for aspiring performers. Although the film opened more than 30 years ago, and our production could have been performed as a period piece, we decided to set the play in the present. Fashion and hairstyles have changed (trust me, I know, there are photographs of me sporting a mullet and

wearing parachute pants) but our students can still relate to the central themes in Fame, and they can identify with the emotions and struggles of the characters. In this production, art is imitating life, and like their fictional counterparts, our students are on a journey with no map and no clear destination. As their director, I am fortunate to travel along with them for a few miles and milestones, before they move onto other endeavors.

A journey like this may begin with one step, but not without the collaboration of many. Our Cast, Crew, and staff are deeply grateful for the support of the MHS administration and the TPA members, who unconditionally give their love and donate countless hours to the Theatre program. I know you all stay out of the spotlight, but it’s time to take a bow.

Finally, to the seniors who have been with me since freshman year, I have seen so much good in all of you, and I know I have not seen the best of you yet. You all deserve a little fame in everything you do.
