The Online Registration System• Service commenced in 2010• Service utilizes JAVA programming & ORACLE encryption• Primary Objectives

1. Faster2. Reliable3. Instantaneous Provision of Course Data4. Improved Handling During Registration Period5. Facilitate Student Ease

The Purpose• Primary Purpose

Determining Level of student Satisfaction or DissatisfactionCauses of Satisfaction/Dissatisfaction

• Secondary PurposeSuggesting Alternatives for Improvement(if Required)

Page 5: Methods in buisness research

The Hypothesis• Null Hypothesis: Students are satisfied with “Online

Registration” System

• Alternate Hypothesis: Students are Not Satisfied and system has not met objectives.

What its about?• Online registration of IoBM.

• Results?

According to literature• 3 phases of online registration

• 1970’s (Developing Stage)

• 1980’s (Stabilized Stage)

• 1990’s (Enhancement Stage)

Page 10: Methods in buisness research

Developing Stage• New technology

• Trial and Error

• Higher education institutions were using it

• Response was positive

Page 11: Methods in buisness research

Stabilized Stage• Almost being used everywhere in the USA

• Features were being added

• Large survey was done(66 universities)

• Revealed various advantages of online registration

• Confirmed successful

Page 12: Methods in buisness research

Enhancement Stage• More experiments were being done

• People started coming up with innovative mediums

• Shows how growth has happen consistently

• Not going to stop here

Page 13: Methods in buisness research

Various problems

• Everything has its pros and cons

• Various glitches and imperfections

• Kate Oczypok pointed out some crucial ones

• Registering through advisor

• Waiting for clearance

• Priority Registration(Done all over the world)

Page 14: Methods in buisness research

How these problems relate to us

• Forget to mail for timeslot

• Waiting for system to clear so that we can register

• Mailing for timeslots defeats the purpose of online registration

Page 15: Methods in buisness research

AT IoBM• Outdated technology

• Awkward timings

• Zambeel at Lums

METHODOLOGY Data Collection  Personally administrated questionnaires (Quantitative data) &

Online Survey Census = students of IoBM (irrespective of Program, Semester

or age.) Sample = 125 IoBM students

Convenient Sampling

Questionnaire Design

Mixture of nominal (dichotomous & category), interval (likert) was used.

Likert scale of six statements whose purpose was to measure the range of the students’ satisfaction or dissatisfaction level with regards to the system.

All questions used were close ended to aid the SPSS Process Funneling technique Avoided different type of problems that can arise when

writing questions (for e.g. questions being double barreled, loaded, leading etc.)

SPSS Tabulation• Tabulation of Data from respondents is a lengthy process.

• Software Configuration & Encoding

• Cross Check for missing or incorrect values

• SPSS Software was the only instrument used in analyzing tabulated data.

ANALYSIS

Page 23: Methods in buisness research

Concept of current registration system is better than the email system.

Page 24: Methods in buisness research

Online registration system lived up to your expectations.

Page 25: Methods in buisness research

Removal of “Drop Course” option is bothersome.

Page 26: Methods in buisness research

Are you satisfied with the loading time of the portal

Page 27: Methods in buisness research

IT department is doing all it can to facilitate registration.

Page 28: Methods in buisness research

Page 30: Methods in buisness research

How much dissatisfied are you with the waiting period?

Page 31: Methods in buisness research

After logging on at your assigned time slot, did you get as many courses as you wanted?

Page 32: Methods in buisness research

If you didn't get as many courses as you wanted, what action did u take to rectify this?

Page 33: Methods in buisness research

Did waiting for add/drop period help you to register for your desired course?

Page 34: Methods in buisness research

Overall are you satisfied with the online registration system?

Page 38: Methods in buisness research

PROBLEMS• Waiting period is too long.

• Majority number of students do not get their required courses.

• Change of pre decided courses at the moment.

• Administrations attitude towards problem solving.

Page 39: Methods in buisness research

• Removal of “Drop Course” option.

• Courses get dropped automatically due to glitches in the system.

• Loading and processing time of the portal is too long.

• List of subject display is too small.

CONCLUSIONTHEORATICALRESEARCH SPECIFIC

Page 41: Methods in buisness research

Theoretical• Transition of Understanding to Practical Practice

• Research Benefits

1. Identify core problems in an issue affecting an organization

2. Bridging gaps in the communication chain.

3. Defining key issues to management for better functioning of organization

Page 42: Methods in buisness research

Research Specific• NULL HYPOTHESIS FAILED• O. R. System has not delivered on Objectives.Common Causes of Dissatisfaction1. Slow turnaround time.2. Regular Failure to logon at allotted time slots3. Perception that the IT department is not making all necessary

arrangements to facilitate student ease.4. Server Crash while logged on for registration5. Unsympathetic and often dismissive attitude of

administration staff in handling student problems.

RECOMMENDATIONS

Page 44: Methods in buisness research

RECOMMENDATIONS• Technical issues such as system crashes and long waiting

period require immediate attention and appropriate efforts should be made to minimize these.

• The display of the courses should be enlarged so that it’s easier for students to find the courses they want to register for.

• Once a student has selected to “add” a course, the loading and processing time should be minimized

Page 45: Methods in buisness research

• The drop course option should be there on the portal and it should be made sure that courses do not get dropped automatically.

• Students should be allowed to register for courses which act as pre requisite for several other courses even if they have not been able to register for them online.

• When a student does not get courses of his choice, he is in a lot of stress. Thus, when he approaches the administration, he should be counseled and it should be made sure that he leaves the administration department with a feeling of satisfaction.
