Logos was t r y i n g t o get 180,000 d o l l a r s f o r a barely used s t o r e f r o n t on Webster Ave. We knew t h a t t h i s was a fraud.

The S.O.L, went down t o c i t y h a l l t o expose how the c i t y govern­ment gives thugs, such as the logos s t a f f , money under the guise o f helplniT people.

Over one hundred separate drug programs were down t h e r e , a l l h u s t l ­i n g , seaming and out and out l y i n g .

bungling f o o l s t h a t c a l l themselves our ^re w i l l i n g t o g i v e t h i s much money t o public servants' ASA without any proof of i t s s u c c e s s .

We sat p a t i e n t l y l i s t e n i n g i o t h i s To us, t h i s seems murderous, insane, s h i t from 10:00 a,m. t o 8:00 p,m. When and p l a i n fucked up, we f i n a l l y got up t o t a l k i n opposition t o the re-funding of logos, the board o f e s t i m a t e s g o t a l l shook up and t o l d everyone but the S.O.L. and'the logos

- s t a f f t o leave. They d i d t h i s because they recognize us as a t h r e a t . We are developing an e f f e c t i v e People's Drug Program instead of a program under the power of these incompetent f o o l s .

Addiction Services Agency (ASA) which i s the funding agency f o r some 2 5 0 separate programs has no way of evaluating t h e i r own programs. This statement came out of commissioner finney's own mouth, and he i s the head dude of t h i s r i d i c u l o u s agency,, A quote from the new york post stated "The o f f i c i a l ASA budget proposal r e ­ported a present budget l e v e l of $97,8 m i l l i o n and l i s t e d funding requirements of $ l / i 8 , 9 0 m i l l i o n f o r t h e coming y e a r .

BROOKLYN THE SUFFERING OF WORKING CLASS YOUTH

IN EAST FLATBUSH(QUBNTiN RD, BERGEN BEACH)

I come from Brooklyn, near Ave N and Flatbush Ave. The neighborhood i t s e l f i s ra«ide up mostly of white working class people« I've l i v e d there since 1 9 ^ 3 ( a t t h i s time I was 1 3 years o l d ) , I be^an using drugs i n 1 9 6 4 . During t h i s period a num­ber of older brothers and s i s t e r s had been addicted f o r a t l e a s t seven years. This was r i g h t about the time the gangs were being diiSunified. A l l the gangs t h a t I can remember a t one time served as a model f o r young white working class people. But be­cause there was a need of the p o l i ­t i c i a n s and so c i a l workers t o stop the s t r e e t f i g h t i n g and stop the un i t y of the gangs, heroin began entering various poor and working class neigh­borhoods. I f e e l t h a t as times changed so would have people. I f most gangs had been helped t o see the p o l i t i c a l contradictions which r e l a ­ted t o t h e i r oppression, many of them would have re s i s t e d the heroin. Most gang leaders had a strong a b i l i t y t o organize,

Eventually most of the older addicts disappeared from the s t r e e t s . Some went t o a state p e n i t e n t i a r y , aome t o Synanonj but the ma j o r i t y of these victims of the heroin plaigue are dead.

By t h i s tine I had already s t a r ­ted high school, Most of the people t h a t I s t a y ^ w i t h were already i n t o drugs (psyehodellcs, p i l l s , h e r o i n ) , constantly t r y i n g t o i d e n t i f y w i t h the p r i v i l e g e d youth c u l t u r e . We did t h i s because a l l the other models whloh we oould look up t o had boen wiped out by the system. The p r i v i ­leged youth c u l t u r e I speak of were people who were not cornered i n t o drugs, but used drugs as a weekend enjoyment. Their f a m i l i e s had money and most of t h e i r futures had already been carved out f o r them (co l l e g e , business, profession). Working class youth had t o block out t h i s thought every day because they had nothing. So dirviPjs became a ha b i t . A l l of us t r i e d constantly t o l i v e up t o the f a l s e middle class values and Images (lonp; hstir, clothes, e t o , ) .

I n a period of about • years I saw a l l of my fr i e n d s e i t h e r drop out of school, j o i n the service, or get worse o f f on drugs. These actions a l l mean death f o r a working Glass person. Since I've been clean from heroin (2^ years). I have been back t o my neighborhood many times. A l l of the people t h a t were not on drugs at the time T was-, are a l l addicted t o heroin. Some people are on metha­done and seem t o be holding a job ; but they are constantly having t h e i r dosage raised and often s e l l i t f o r some dope t o see i f they can s t i l l get high from i t . Other people that don't get high very often w i l l buy methadone r i g h t o f f the s t r e e t f o r a weekend high. As I go and t a l k w i t h these people they have a l o t t o say and admire me i n some respect because I was fortunate enough t o get out In timp. On th« other hand, I am alno c a l l e d a preacher. Because of r^.cisn people w i l l often say t o me "Revolu-t l p n IS a l r i g h t f o r the Blacks and

Puerto Ricans because tney are worse o f f than us". So i t makes i t very hard t o show people there i s common purpose f o r people t o unite around. U n t i l our group expands, there w i l l be nothing set up f o r these young W,C, addicts i n Brooklyn t h a t w i l l r e l a t e t o t h e i r needs. And I guess they w i l l see things as being very-hopeless u n t i l then. And i t hurtfs t o b e l i e v e t h a t the only a l t e r n a t i v e these people see t o the heroin plague i s the SYSTEM'S CURE — methadone.

DRUG SEMINAR AT LINCOLN HOSPITAL T r a d i t i o n a l l y drug seminars a t

Lincoln Hospital have been taught by various bosp©s of tho <iopartmont of psychiatry. Out of these bosses' mouths would flow the usual stream of i n s u l t s and slanders about v i c t i m s of the heroin plague—only i t would be dressed up i n the disguise of pro­fessional language. Junkies (•Inade­quate p e r s o n a l i t i e s ' ) are people who are i n d i v i d u a l l y responsible f o r t h e i r own s u f f e r i n g ('they have a character disorder and are anti-social') because they are e v i l and sick ('morally diseased*), and they can never (Change and be drug free (sugges­ted treatment I methadone ad d i c t i o n and various other experimental drugs)

Those who attended these former seminars were almost exclusively r e s i ­dent p s y c h i a t r i s t s . There were sever­a l reasons f o r thif s j

(1) Only psy c h i a t r i s t f ^ and psychi­a t r i s t s - i n - t r a i n i n g could understand the secret terms t h a t were being batted around and would al s o have 'in i n t e r e s t i n e x p l o i t i n g drug victims by making money o f f t h e i r s u f f e r i n g as ' t h e r a p i s t s ' and bosses of jkioney drug treatment businesses, (2) Workers who oome from communities t h a t are ravaged by the heroin plague could not r e l a t e t o the obvious l i e s about the nature of drug a d d i c t i o n , because these phoney theories f l y i n the face of r e a l i t i e s the workers witness every day, ( 3 ) Workers don't have the p r i v i l e g e of casually wandering away from t h e i r workplaces and attending a seminar. Leaving t h e i r jobs would e i t h e r mean being y e l l e d a t by a boss f o r being i r r e s p o n s i b l e , lazy,' e t c , or i t would burden t h e i r co-workers w i t h a d d i t i o n a l work.

White Lightning has been a leading p a r t i c i p a n t i n a new drug seminar a t Lincoln Hospital f o r more than two months. We t r y t o educate people t o understand t h a t the un­equal way our society i s organized and the oppressive way people are forced t o r e l a t e t o each other have created the conditions and reasons why the heroin plague con­tinues t o mur3er and destroy more 9.nA more of our people. We are t r y -i n t o cut through the fog and p o l i t i c a l l y created 'mystery' about a d d i c t i o n . By r e f e r r i n g t o our own experience we demonstrate t h a t addicts are v i c t i m s of an oppressive society t h a t has more regard f o r a new machine than i t s own or our l i v e s .

Our seminar has been very w e l l attended, c e r t a i n l y b e t t e r attended than other seminars t h a t are taught by experts r e c e i v i n g $5^100 an hour or $160,00 per seminar, (We receive nothing but a sense of s a t i s f a c t i o n a t our work because we do not q u a l i f y as p r i v i l e g e d experts and bosses.)

Our greatest aocompli*5hment has been confronting p s y c h i a t r i s t s anfl r e s i ­dents i n psychiatry about r e l i e v i n g workers of t h e i r work r e s p o n s i b i l i t i e s f o r a couple of hours so they too could attend our senin?.r. One d i r e c ­t o r of psychiatry stood up and l e c ­tured us about how workers i n the department are a l l t^zy and lack i n g i n ambition. He said t h i s was the r e a l reason thpy wouldn't attend any seminars—not because they were a part of an exploited class.
