MV Switchgear Technology
is in our DNA
Complete MV switchgear solutions
The series of Eaton Medium Voltage systems offers switchgearand components for applications in distribution networks (mainstations, sub stations and transformer stations) and industrialpower supplies. These technically high quality systems are air- orepoxy-resin insulated and are always equipped with circuit-breakers based on proprietary vacuum interrupters.
The medium voltage switchgear systems carrying Eaton’s brandare based on the use of vacuum circuit-breakers combined withsolid insulation material. This is an environmentally-friendly technology in comparison with the methods used by many othersuppliers, which use SF6 as an insulation medium.
Eaton thus has a wide range of switching systems and components that offer an environmentally friendly solution forevery application. Additionally, Eaton’s global service network provides maximum customer support in all regions of the world.
Industry leading vacuum and solid insulation technology
Through more than eighty years of innovation and experience,Eaton has developed environmentally friendly vacuum interrupterscapable of reliably switching both normal load currents and highstress fault currents.
Eaton is one of the few companies in the world producing vacuuminterrupters and has succeeded in developing world class productswith international patents. This has been achieved throughcompany acquisitions over the years of Westinghouse®, Cutler-Hammer®, MEM® and Holec®.
To increase the dielectric strength of the vacuum interrupter, Eaton has also designed vacuum interrupters that are encapsulatedin epoxy resin material. The medium voltage IEC circuit breakerfamily utilizes this solid insulation technology that has been catering to a wide range of applications for more than 40 years.

Xiria The Product Family
Xiria is the name of Eaton's product family for a new generation of medium voltage
switchgear. The Xiria family started more than a decade ago with the introduction of
the Xiria ring main unit.
This ring main unit consists of a block containing three panels. Due to the quick acceptance andworldwide interest in more configurations, Eaton consequently developed a four, five and two panelblock. Due to the fact that the individual units cannot be coupled and are limited in the number ofpanels and protection and control equipment, the single panel version was developed. This singlepanel version is called Xiria E. E in this case stands for Extendable.
The Xiria family includes multiple possibilities and configurations for Power consumption metering. These configurations are indicated as Xiria M-versions. M stands for metering. The transformers forpower consumption metering can be either integrated into the block-type Xiria switchgear or housedin a separate metering panel. This dedicated metering panel can be integrated with both the currentblock type switchgear and the new single extendable panels.
By adding the Xiria E panel tothe current range of Xiria acomplete family, based on thesame and proven key techno -logies, is created. The Xiriablock type system is alreadyfrequently used for transformersstations, small industries,
heavy duty applications andcommercial buildings. With the new Xiria E panel it is alsopossible to use the system inapplications with higherspecifications and a biggernumber of panels.
Some applications are: • Distribution substations
for utilities• Wind power plants• Bigger industrial applications• Hotels• Shopping centres
• Office buildings• Infrastructure projects
(tunnels, subways, airports)• Universities• Hospitals• Data centers

Xiria EModular Switchgear for Smart Grid Applications
Xiria E is the name of Eaton's new medium voltage
switchgear for smart grid applications. The system is
characterised by its high level of operational safety and
suitable for applications up to 24 kV.
The Xiria E switchgear isdesigned around Eaton'sproven vacuum interrupters, which require no maintenanceand are certified for 30,000operation cycles.
All live parts in the availablepanels are single poleinsulated. The used materialsare shaped specifically toprovide optimum insulationcombined with excellentthermal characteristics. Inaddition, the insulation isconfigured to provide effectivecontrol over electric fieldsaround the used components, thereby minimizing any risk ofinternal arcing.
Within the Xiria E panels boththe primary parts and themechanisms are housed in afully enclosed housing whichprotects the whole systemagainst environmentalinfluences.
The use of vacuum interruptersand solid insulation means thatthe Xiria E is environmentallyfriendly. These technologiesensure that this system is aconservational alternative toswitchgear systems usingSulfur Hexafluoride (SF6) gasfor insulation. The cost ofownership is also significantly
reduced, as no regular testingof gas pressure or other routinemaintenance is needed andthere is no high end-of-life costassociated with ultimatelydisposing of the equipment.
With panel dimensions of only500 mm width and a provisionfor cable connection from thefront, the Xiria E system iseconomical in its use ofvaluable floor space, and easyto accommodate in even themost restricted environ ments. For locations where there is nopossibility to exhaust aninternal arc into cellar, thesystem has the possibility toexhaust into the room. This isrealized by means of a specialchimney at the back side withintegrated arc absorbers.
When it comes to the safety ofthe operating personnel theXiria E design leaves nothing tochance. All parts are fullyenclosed by an internal arctested safe metal housing.Besides that the panels in thesystem are provided with directvisible indication of theintegrated earthing andON/OFF-position by means ofinspection windows in thefront.

Polycarbonate and Thermo -plastic elastomer (TPE) is usedas high-quality primary insulationmaterials around live parts.
By applying Polycarbonate andTPE for solid insulation ourdesign engineers can shape theparts specifically for optimalinsulation, robust construction
and cooling purposes. In themany years of experience withdesign and manufacturing ofinsulation materials, we learnedto construct smart single phaseinsulated constructions. Xiriautilizes optimal field controlthrough the special design of all primary components.
Eaton Core Technologies
Solid insulation
With conventional shapes forprimary components likebusbars and conductors, theelectrical field between thephases and between phase andearth is non-uniformlydistributed. In areas with highfield, partial break-through can
initiate avalanches resulting inflash-overs. In-depth knowledgeabout breakthrough phenomenaand field steering techniquesenable us to prevent flash overcompletely. The result is aparticular compact design.
Electrical field control
Eaton vacuum interruptersconsist of a ceramic cylinder, housing a fixed and movablecontact. Movement of thecontact under vacuumconditions is facilitated by abellow. A shield surroundingthe contacts prevents theinsulators from becomingcontaminated by metal vapourproduced during currentinterruption. This shield alsoensures good potentialdistribution over the insulator.
A typical feature of Eatonvacuum interrupters is thatthey are characterised by verylow arc voltage and short arctimes, resulting in very low arcenergy. Contacts wear in avacuum interrupter is thereforevirtually negligible. Vacuuminterrupters are maintenancefree and are certified up to30,000 operation cycles.
Vacuum technology: safe, compact and reliable
Eaton's proven technologies
have been integrated in the
design and development of
the Xiria in order to ensure
that the switchgear is safe
and has high operational
reliability throughout its
complete lifetime.
Experience and knowledgegained over many years in theareas of cast resin technology, vacuum technology andelectrical field control havebeen implemented.
The system has beenthoroughly arc fault testedaccording to the latest standardIEC 62271-200.
Within the Xiria design there are different technologies used to prevent an open arc.
Single pole insulated primaryparts
All high voltage parts are singlepole insulated. The insulationmaterials used for this arePolycarbonate and Thermo -plastic elastomer (TPE), bothhigh-quality materials withoptimal insulation characteristicresulting in minimiseddimensions.
Protected Voltagetransformers
Ferro resonance can cause thatvoltage transformers aredamaged and consequentlyinitiate an internal arc in theswitchgear. Our designprevents that the voltagetransformers are affected byferroresonance. A resistor anda saturable coil are installed inthe tertiary circuit of thevoltage transformer.
Use of Electrical Field control
Engineers designed the wholeconstruction of primary parts, housed in the sealed for lifetank, based on Eaton's keytechnology for electrical fieldcontrol. By means of specialshapes and dimensions thepossibility of an open arc isminimized.
Reliable and Safe in Operation
Preventing an internal arc
10
Sealed for life fully enclosedhousing
Both the primary parts of theunit and the mechanisms arehoused in a fully enclosed(sealed for life) housing whichprotects the whole systemagainst environmentalinfluences and therefore makesit maintenance free. Thiscompartment can be classifiedas non-accessible and has an IP degree of IP55.
Routine tests
Various prescribed routine tests are carried out during the production of the switch -gear. To assure quality, allprocesses are in accordancewith DIN EN 9001. This meansthat at every stage ofproduction the components,circuit-breakers and currenttransformers are inspected forcorrect functioning. When theentire installation has been
assembled, a thorough visualinspection is carried out, together with mechanical, functional and electrical checks.
Philosophy on Internal arcs
Eaton always puts extra focuson creating safe switchgear foroperators at all times. One ofthe biggest potential threats tooperators is an internal arc inswitchgear.
Engineers therefore did every -thing necessary in design andconstruction to prevent internalarcs, despite the fact that it isvery rare for an operator to be infront (without operating) of theswitchgear at exactly the sametime that an internal faultoccurs.
Eaton supports the philosophythat it is best to avoid internalarcs than to cure, in line withthe relevant standard
IEC 62271-200. Within the Xiriadesign a double preventionphilosophy is used. Firstly, thedesign is constructed in such away that an internal arc isprevented. In the unlikely casethat an internal arc could occur, the Xiria is equipped to providemaximum safety to theoperator, and to control andminimise damage to the rest ofthe switchgear and room.
11
Arc absorber reduces output impact
In case it is not possible to ventinto the cable cellar or into anadjacent room, the Xiria designoffers the possibility to safelyvent into the switch room. Inthis case a special arc chimneyis installed at the backside ofthe panel. This arc chimneycontains integrated arcabsorbers that break and filtergasses and fire significantly.
Controlling an internal arc
By design, vacuum and air/solidinsulated switchgear has theleast environmental impactafter an internal arc event. Theimpact of an arc is twofold: aninternal impact (in theswitchgear) and external impact(in the switch room).
The overpressure created by aninternal arc will, in standardswitchgear, be guided out ofthe switchgear by means of apressure relief duct. Next tothe duct a complicated and
expensive arc channel may beinstalled, that guides the arcoutput outside the switchroom. The Xiria design isconstructed in such a way thatboth impacts are significantlyreduced and consequently aless complicated arc channel isneeded.
No phase-to-phase shortcircuits minimises pressure
Within the Xiria all high voltageparts are single pole insulated. The advantage of this singlepole construction is that theonly conceivable internal fault isa single-phase short circuit, e.g.due to a cable connectionfailure (when single core cablesare connected, as is the normalpractice nowadays).
11
An internal arc in switchgear causes an overpressure supported by the release of fire and smoke.
12
Capacitive voltage detectionsystem for verification of safeisolation from supply
Each panel type within the Xiriafamily is equipped with astandard three-phase VoltageDetection System for voltagetesting to IEC 61243-5. TheVDS shows the operator if thepanel is isolated from supply ornot.
Logical mechanical andelectrical interlocks preventmal operation
Within the Xiria design mis-operation by an operator isprevented by using differentinterlocks. The interlocks aremechanical and electrical. Forexample electrical andmechanical interlocks preventto operate the change-over
switch when the circuit-breakeris switched on. All mechanicalinterlocks are constructed insuch a way that they directlyblock the mechanism.
Switching to service positionis only possible with closedcable compartment
The door of the cablecompartment can only bestandard opened when thecircuit-breaker is in the earthedposition. After the door isremoved it is possible to switchoff the circuit-breaker for cabletesting. Next switching on toservice position is only possiblewith the door positioned backagain.
Compartments protectedagainst penetration ofobjects
Within the Xiria design it is alsonot possible to accidentallypenetrate the switchgear bypart of a body or a tool.
For the latter all high voltagecompartments have an IP55degree.
Smooth temporary design
All compartments of the Xiriapanels are designed in such away that the system is safe totouch from the outside. Byusing a smooth and smartdesign it is not possible for theoperator to injure himself bymoving parts or parts that stickout of the switchgear whenmoving in front of theswitchgear.
Visible isolation by means of inspection windows in the front
When carrying out operationalactions and work on the cables,it is vital to have unambiguousstatus indications. When itcomes to safety of theoperating personnel Eatonleaves nothing to change. Thatis why the Xiria design is fittedwith directly visible isolation bymeans of inspection windowsin the front which makes theisolating distance between thecable and busbar systemdirectly visible. A visible, short-circuit proof earthing can takeplace via the load-break switchor circuit-breaker.
Safe in Use
The Xiria design contains some special features that guarantee the operator to work
safely with the different panel types.
What you see is what you get!

Low Total Cost ofOwnership
The Xiria design guarantees very low costs related to
owning the switchgear during its entire lifetime.
The life-time costs can be split in the initial costs, installation cost, service cost and finally, costs for disposal of the switchgear.
All costs of owning the switchgear are influenced by differentfeatures of the switchgear. Within Xiria all these features areconstructed in such a way that the costs for the owner are as lowas possible of course with no concessions to the quality of theswitchgear.
Low initial costsInitial costs consist of purchase, transport, building andinstallation costs.
Panel width only 500 mm
By using a combination of solidinsulation technology, electricalfield control and vacuumtechnologies, Eaton's engineersmanaged to construct Xiria Epanels with a width ofmaximum 500 mm. Because atypical switchgear installationnormally consists of a largenumber of panels, this compactdesign significantly reduces theswitch room size. The compactdesign also makes Xiria E highlyflexible and economicallyattractive when existinginstallations are being replaced.
Cable connection from thefront (back-to-wallarrangement)
Cable connection from thefront is a feature that savesbuilding costs. Due to this frontconnection the rear of the Xiria E can be installed close tothe wall of a building, againreducing building cost.
12 kV and 24 kV panels insame housing
The 12 kV and 24 kV versionsare both accommodated in thesame compact housing. Thismeans substantial savings onbuilding costs because thesame switchroom can be usedwhen the operating voltage isincreased (upgrading).
Arc chimney with integratedarc absorbers
A standard option (in case thereis no possibility to vent downor backwards) that reduces theswitchroom dimension is theXiria arc chimney withintegrated arc absorbers. Innormal switchgear, gassescaused by an internal arc areguided out of the switchroomby means of an extra duct andarc channel connected to theswitchgear. These additionsrequire extra switch roomspace and consequentlyincreasing initial building cost.
Low service cost during
operationService cost consists ofmaintenance, failure andconsequential cost. Besidesthat the technical lifetime ofparts or modules willdetermine the replacementcost of the equipment.
Robust "lean" design withminimum number of parts
Costs during service of aswitchgear can be caused bydamaged parts requiringreplacement, or bymaintenance parts that will notreach their expected lifetime ifthey are not serviced.
Within the Xiria design aminimal number ofcomponents are used. Thisrobust design with only thenecessary parts is designedbased on experience of buildingswitchgear for more than acentury.
No SF6-gas pressure checks
Switchgear that uses SF6-gasas an insulation medium has aleakage rate. To maintain theisolation level within this typeof switchgear, the pressure ofthe SF6 tanks must be checkedand refilled on a regular basisduring the unit's lifetime.Within the Xiria, an owner doesnot have to incur the extracosts involved in checking andmaintaining the requiredinsulation level. Thecombination of vacuuminterrupters for switching, solidinsulation and clean air as theinsulation medium, isenvironmentally friendly andmaintains the same qualitylevel during the completelifetime of Xiria.
Primary parts andmechanism installed in afully sealed for live enclosedhousing
The biggest influence on thequality of the primary andmoving parts in switchgear, hasthe environment in and outsidethe switchroom. Theseenvironmental influences couldin the end cause damage to theswitchgear that should berepaired. To prevent anyenvironmental influence on the most critical parts in theXiria, all of these parts arehoused in a fully sealed for liveenclosure (IP55).
Product quality guaranteedby prescribed routine testingin the factory
During production of thepanels, various prescribedroutine tests are carried out byspecialists, making sure thatthe panels achieve the qualitythat they are designed for.
Low end of life disposal
cost
Full recycling or re-use ofmaterials
The primary parts of the Xiriahave a lifetime of at least 30years. Depending on thelocation where the system isinstalled the lifetime can beextended. If for what reasonthe decision is made not to usethe switchgear anymore theXiria can be handed over toEaton again. Next the switch -gear will be dismantled and thedifferent materials can, andwill, be categorised. Becauseno toxic materials are used inthe Xiria, dismantling is a lesscomplicated, more costeffective and environmentallyfriendly operation. Thedismantled and categorisedmaterials will be, depending onthe material, recycled or re-used.
13
User friendly
First of all requirements is a safe and reliable installation.
Number two is an installation that is convenient and
efficient to operate.
The second aspect does not always get the attention it deserves, but for Xiria most certainly did. The Xiria panels are designed to beuser friendly and are easy to operate.
Primarily, all operations can be carried out on the front side of thepanel. This means that both cable connection and user interfacefor operation are positioned at the same front side of the panel. The logically arranged control panel enable operators to do theirjob as efficiently and safe as possible.
Primary cables
The cable cones of Xiria arepositioned on a height of 700 mm from floor level. Thisheight makes it relatively easyfor operators to connect theprimary cables. There is alsoenough space in the cablecompartment to connect therequired number of cables with connectors available onthe market.
Secondary cables
Connecting the secondarycables is carried out byentering the low voltagecompartment of the Xiria Efrom the top. The low voltagecable terminals are positionedin such a way that the operatorcan connect the cables easilywithin the compartment whilststanding in front of the Xiria E.
The control panel on the Xiria ispositioned on a convenientheight for the operator. It isdirectly connected to themechanism.
The mechanism is a handoperated or hand/motoroperated spring chargedmechanism, connected to thevacuum interrupters and thechange-over switch. It isoperated via two rotating shaftson the front provided with thenecessary mechanical inter -locks to avoid wrong operation. For example an interlock isbuilt-in that prevents operationof the change-over switchwhen the circuit-breaker orload-break switch is in the ON-position. Another standardfeature on the control panel isthe padlocking of the earthedposition. For padlocking theposition, the most commonpadlocks available in the marketcan be used.
Manual operation of theswitchgear is achieved withone operating handle. Thishandle can be used forswitching the circuit-breaker,load-break switch and change-over switch. Operation is doneby inserting the handle in theaccess holes in the front. Incase a motor-operated circuit-
breaker is requested a pushbutton will be installed in thecontrol panel for achieving thisfunction.
The mechanism is providedwith viewing windows on thefront for direct visual indicationof the earthed position of thechange-over switch and theON/OFF-position of the mainvacuum interrupter. The frontoperating panel is also providedwith a black and white singleline intuitive mimic, showingthe positions of the vacuuminterrupter and the Earth/Busbarposition of the change-overswitch.
Each panel is provided with avoltage detector mounted onthe front. It is connected viainternal wiring to capacitivesensors inside the cableconnection cones. It shows thepresence of the primary voltageon all three phases of theprimary cables connected tothe panel.
In case advanced protectionand control equipment isrequested, the low voltagecompartment positioned on top of the panel, will house these.

Environmentallyfriendly
Like all Eaton's other medium voltage switchgear, Xiria
is designed to be an environmentally friendly product
throughout the whole chain.
One of the key strategic initiatives of Eaton is to provide environ -mentally friendly products. Eaton realises that for this they shouldlook at their total product chain, from design to dismantling. Theoptimal situation is that for each phase there is no damage to theenvironment and at the end, all materials can be re-used again inthe same product (the Cradle-to-Cradle principle). The productchain can be divided into four main blocks. These blocks are thedesign (materials used) of the product, the assembly of theproduct, the usage phase of the product and finally thedismantling of the product.
Eaton's production plant in Hengelo (the Netherlands) acts entirelyin accordance with the rules and procedures of ISO 14001environmental certificate during development and productionprocesses.
With respect to the design ofswitchgear, the vision "the lessnumber of components thebetter" applies. This becauseevery part must be manu -factured and therefore impactson the environment. Next, applies the affect of differentmaterials on the environment.
Use of minimised number ofcomponents
Xiria is designed to use theminimum of materials andresources, without affectingthe strength of the system. For example, Eaton reducedthe number of componentsdramatically, compared toconventional switchgear, byusing an simple spring chargingmechanism and integratedcompartments. This alsoensures straight forwardassembly with low labour cost.
Materials with no/lessimpact on the environment
Eaton selects materials withcare. It is essential that theyare safe for personnel and theenvironment - not just duringuse, but at the end of servicelife too.
Within Xiria a combination ofsolid (cast resin) insulation andair as insulation medium isused. The solid insulationtechnology, in combination withelectrical field calculations, provides a very compact, environmentally friendly designfor the switchgear. As the
switching medium, vacuumtechnology is used within theinterrupters of the Xiria circuit-breakers. Xiria can becompletely recycled at the endof its life without any problem.
No use of SF6 gas forinsulation or switching
Within medium voltageswitchgear SF6-gas is beingused, because of its goodinsulating properties. Emissionsof SF6-gas from switchgearcontribute significantly to thethreat of the greenhouse effectand associated climate change.SF6 is on the list of greenhousegasses in the Kyoto protocol.
SF6 is the most potent of thesix main greenhouse gasses, with a Global WarmingPotential (GWP) of 23,000.
In the 1980s, the Holec group,as it was then, made afundamental choice not to useSF6 as a switching andinsulation medium for mediumvoltage equipment. In the1980s, Holec had SF6 techno -logy available in-house. Themain reason for not using anySF6 in medium voltage equip -ment was the complexity ofthe treatment required for thetoxicity of the gasses that havebeen in contact with an arc,and the need for additionalsafety measures when used inpublic locations such asresidential areas and shoppingcentres.
Besides the energy sources, special focus was placed onthe efficient use of materialduring assembly. For example, sheet steel plates are cut withas little waste material aspossible. Residual material isused within other productcomponents.
15
Environmentally friendly design Efficient use of materials
To prevent energy loss by thesystem itself, Xiria uses aminimum number of primarychange-over points. All theavailable change-over pointsuse optimal surface contactsand by this, prevent extraenergy losses over thesepoints.
Minimal energy loss
during operation
During dismantling Xiriaswitchgear is demounted intoparts and thereafter categorizedper material. Next the parts willbe recycled or re-used.Because Xiria uses no SF6,there is no loss of this gasduring dismantling of theswitchgear.
Re-use or recycling of
materials
Because Xiria is designed for a lifetime of at least 30 years, the system needs no energyusage for maintenanceactivities during this longperiod. Due to the greeninsulation and switchingtechnology, there is also noleakage of the SF6-gas duringits lifetime and no need forextra maintenance activities onSF6 pressure checks.
No service checks on site

Exactly how you want it
Flexible application of secondary apparatus, protection relays and substation automation
Eaton realises that end-usershave their own direction withrespect to the use of secondaryapparatus, protection relays andsubstation automation withinthe switchgear. The need forcustomer specific apparatusand relays was taken intoaccount during the develop -ment of the Xiria E. Thisresulted in a system thatenables end-users to integrateapparatus according to theirspecification. Thanks to thelarge number of protection andcontrol options, end-users willalways be able to construct anXiria E system that conformsexactly to your requirements.
Range of Voltagetransformers
All Xiria E panels can be fittedwith cast-resin insulatedvoltage transformers (of therequested transformer ratio andclass) for the voltagemeasurement on the cableside, or on the busbar side. Both transformers can be (dis-)connected safely andeasily.
Range of Currenttransformers
The epoxy resin insulatedcurrent transformers are of thering core type. They arepositioned around the primaryconductors behind the cablecones or around the primarycables. All commontransformer ratios, outputs, rated currents and classes arepossible.
Protection and Controlequipment
The protection and controlequipment is located in the lowvoltage compartment. Thiscompartment is completelyseparate and has its ownaccess door. There is space onthe door for equipment such asprotection relays, test plugs, meters, etc.
The Xiria E is standardised forthe Woodward HighProtec linerelays series. However the XiriaE is adaptable for theinstallation of other brands. Incase more than one relay isrequired, the low voltagecompartment can be extended.
Smart Grids
Equipment for (remote or local)communication betweenpanels or automation systemscan also be installed in the lowvoltage compartment. Forinstance an Eaton remoteterminal unit (RTU) can beapplied. Having this possibilitymakes the system the perfectsolution for current and futureSmart Grid applications.
Simple configuration, coupling and extension
Every application of this type ofsystem is unique, so Eatonoffers a large number ofdifferent panel types and fieldversions. If, in due course, theend-user needs additionalcapacity in the form of morepanels, Xiria E can easily beextended to the right or left.
