Dear all...July has seen two of our dear friends leave Holy Trinity to move to Bolton to be nearer to their family. Alan and Margaret Crossley have left with us many memories and have each in their own way touched our lives. Alan was a very inspirational preacher often humorous but always very humble in his delivery of the Gospel. Both Alan and Margaret have demonstrated by example love, care, comfort and support. Strengthening us by their understanding and inclusion in their prayers which over the years has given us and other congregations strength and courage to carry on. Margaret was very much involved in the Mothers’ Union in various ways and here again Alan supported her by attending and leading Mothers’ Union services. Although technically retired, Alan and Margaret walked two interregnums with us and shared in the additional services and Parish duties for which we are very grateful.

Margaret and Alan will be sadly missed but we pray that God will bless them in their new home and that his love and peace will surround them in all that they do in the future.

The builder returned on Tuesday 14th August to repair the leaking areas. The temporary repair has presented difficulties in being able to route the drainage of rain water especially with excessive downpours. It has been decided that the best way to preserve the carpet affected by the leakage in the Fellowship area and St. Michael’s aisle is to take it up and allow it to be dried. The carpet will then be stored and re-laid once the restoration works are completed.

The PCC have appointed a sub committee to collate and prepare the Lottery Heritage Funding application. The group consists of Karen Hillis, Brian James, John Lane and Rob Daunt. Please feel free to speak to any of them if you have any questions. The group has met on several occasions. Our initial enquiry has been acknowledged, and as a result The Heritage Lottery Fund will assign a Development Officer to Holy Trinity in the next ten days.

One Community Serving Another : The Kenyan Project The work of producing handmade clothing for children in Kenyan continues, even though our workshops on the first and third Tuesday in the month have finished through the summer and resume on the 3rd September at 1-30 until 3-30pm in the Mawson Room at The Memorial Hall, Slyne, where everyone would be made welcome. One of our ladies from Slyne recently visited ‘New Life Homes’ in Kenya. With her went three large suitcases full of lovely hand knitted and beautifully sewn clothes made by ladies here at Slyne and our sister group in Ormskirk and surrounding areas. This gives us a focus of creating something with an end purpose, whilst also providing friendship and company for many who enjoy meeting together. Norma had the opportunity to visit and work at the Homes and centres in Kilimani, Nairobi and Bethel Homes in Nakuru during her three week visit. She came back with many stories to tell and lots of photographs, many with the babies and children wearing the clothes that were sent out. One of our ladies donated some small knitted teddies that are clearly seen in the photographs, been cuddled by the children. While Norma was working at the centre, abandoned babies were admitted to the Home, and one little girl was named after her. Just think...When a child dies of Aids/HIV related illness it is sad....When the child dies unaided it is a disgrace. Some of the older children for various reasons do not find a foster family or adoption. So Norma started a craft workshop after school for them. These children were very eager to learn new skills and maybe find some way of becoming self-sufficient in the future. Since we stared ‘The Kenyan Project’ many little ‘Fish and Chip’ jumpers have come our way. These vests were knitted for Malawi babies, leaving hospital without clothes and wrapped in newspaper. This summer we have found a means to get them to their destination. Three huge boxes, plus new briefs for many girls. The Kenyan Project has stalls at the Community Coffee Morning on the first Saturday in the month 10.00am until noon. Some of the money raised has enabled us to give finance towards medical bills to a small orphanage in Mombasa. Thank you to everyone who has helped. For more information on ‘The Kenyan Project’ please contact Susan : (823928)

Traditionally we have had a recess over the summer months, but this year we have continued to meet with one another at the Village Hall Coffee Mornings, and also at our Summer Lunch. This proved to be highly successful and promises to become a regular event in our calendar. Fifty four members and friends welcomed Alan & Margaret Crossley (who had been our Deputy Enrolling Member) as our guests on a sunny afternoon at Morecambe Golf Club, all enjoying delicious food and lots of good conversation. We presented Margaret with a basket of flowers and Alan with chocolates, which was in addition to the gift voucher we collected for them and for which Margaret wrote,

“Thank-you so much for the magnificent present which took us by surprise!”

We now look ahead to our Opening Service on Wednesday 25th September at 2pm in church. This is a very special day when Kath Lane will be commissioned as our new Enrolling Member by the Revd Canon Paul Warren, Tunstall Area Dean. That day nine new members will also be enrolled and two members will re-join after a time of absence.

We are thrilled to have this new intake of members and I know we will be praying

for them as they prepare to join us, and of course for Kath in her new role. She will be greatly blessed by having such a thriving and enthusiastic group of members to love and support her, as I have been for the past five years.

A Walk takes place on Wednesday 11th September, led by Mothers’ Union Lancaster Deanery Chaplain, the Revd Linda Macluskie. The walk is from Condor Green to Glasson and begins at 12.30. Those who wish to have a picnic or lunch at the cafe may like to go earlier or call at the Cafe D’ Lune at the finish at around 3pm. This walk is on the flat and, as always, open to friends and families.

We continue to remember our members who have been unwell, whether they are at home, in hospital or in the Hospice, sending warmest wishes and the prayer that the Lord will continue to surround them with his peace.

We are delighted, too, to share in joyous occasions and one of our members, Olive Smith and her husband Donald celebrated their Diamond wedding in July. Many congratulations and good wishes to them both.

Wishing you all every blessing and with love, Pam Bentley, Enrolling Member.

Dear friendsIt’s hard to believe it’s September already. The children return to school, Shining Stars begins a new year and Harvest is upon us.

This September the North Lancaster Pastorate has a new venture. I have been asked if I would be willing to supervise a TLS student. TLS stands for Training for Learning and Serving. It is sponsored by the United Reformed Church and consists of a variety of courses in subjects related to Christian life and discipleship.

The student who will be joining us is Mrs Moira Rose from Carver Church in Windermere. She will be with us over the winter and will be getting involved a little bit in church life, leading worship and doing some preaching. At the end of her time, if Moira wishes to become a Synod recognised Lay Preacher, she will have an assessed service.

Moira is going to join the September Agapé lunch at Bolton le Sands and then I will be showing her around the pastorate. It will be an important learning time for Moira and I’m sure you will make her welcome. It will also be a learning opportunity for us as a pastorate. I’m sure that the process works two ways - Moira will learn from us and I believe we will have a lot to learn from her.

I am certainly looking forward to the experience and I hope you will too.

Happy holidays – with best wishes,Yolande

August and the garden

The Rev. Geoff Lear’s service on 18 August was centred round gardens and gardening. Here are a number of August and garden related items.

The first Roman Emperor was Augustus Caesar. Until 8 BC the month of August was called ‘Sextilis’ as it was the sixth month of their year. However, Augustus then had the month named after him as it was the month of his greatest triumphs. In August AD14 he died.

The Anglo-Saxons had their own name for the month, Weod-monath, meaning ‘weed month’ as it is the month that the weeds grow the most rapidly.

Page 9: Messenger September 2013

www.bolton-le-sands.co.uk messenger | 9

The dictionary definition of a weed is that it is a wild plant growing where it is not wanted. How often do we look at a field of buttercups or a roadside border of dandelions and think how beautiful they are and then spend hours in the garden removing them from our beds and lawns?

August is the main month in the year for horticultural shows, particularly in rural areas. We have shows in Bolton-le-Sands and Slyne-with-Hest. People can then come and see what can be grown in gardens and greenhouses and appreciate the hard work that goes into growing flowers, fruit and vegetables. Those who have grown winning blooms, etc. can be proud of their efforts. What people do not see is all the work that goes into setting up the show. The committee as a whole has to pull together, collating the entries, setting up the tables and marking them out for the entries before show day. On the day there is, stewarding during setting up the entries, judging and during the afternoon, seeing to the prize monies and distribution, providing tea and scones or cakes, running the raffle and various other jobs and finally clearing it all away. Show day itself is a long day.

The late Percy Thrower said, “Despite all the attractions of the world of publicity and entertainment my heart stayed – and always will stay – in the garden and among the plants I love.”

This was posted on a noticeboard in a gardening shop, “Gardening is a way of showing you believe in tomorrow.”

Gardener Neville Hume is still using the same fork and hoe that had come to him from his grandfather via his father. Robert Hume was a professional gardener whose boss bought the tools for him in 1883.

Life is a garden, good friends are the flowers, and times spent together are our happiest hours.

Thankful Villages RunThankful Villages – where everyone who served in the 1914–18 war returned alive.

Arkholme – the most thankful village – 59 served and 59 returned.

Nether Kellet – a doubly thankful village – all who served in 1939–45 also returned alive.

A good crowd gathered at Nether Kellet Village Peace Stone to welcome 50 bikers on Saturday 3 August at 6.00 pm. Nether Kellet was the last thankful village to be visited by the bikers who came from Wales and England.

Dougie, the leader, spoke about the British Legion. The organisers hope to raise £51,000 this year. Next year will be the centenary and villagers were asked to hold a service at the Stone to commemorate the occasion, every thankful village is to try and organise it at the same time.

Nancy, our vicar, welcomed the bikers. A prayer was said at the Peace Stone and Dougie presented Nancy with a plaque and a certificate. Nancy then introduced guests and villagers to the bikers. The ladies enjoyed several fond hugs from the bikers. The Brownies and Rainbows presented neckers to the bikers and made them honorary members of the Brownies. They were also presented with friendship bracelets and letters to give to the Welsh villagers on their way home on Sunday.

The day ended at Docker Park Farm with traditional wartime music and games for villagers and bikers alike.

Sponsors were Triumph Motorcylces and Girl Guiding UK.

Monsignor Michael Tully, who has recently retired and now lives in one of the flats converted from the Presbytery, frequently says Mass at 10.00am on weekdays. Our beautiful church is open for you to visit on most days.

The Parish Hall is currently used for social activities which will be listed in future editions, as well as dancing classes and badminton evenings. There are periods when it is available for hire (Contact Mrs R Smyth 01524823747).

Congratulations to Joe and Mary Hart who celebrated their Diamond Wedding Anniversary on August 3rd. Canon John Gibson dedicated the Sunday Mass to them on the 4th. At the end of the Mass he intended using a book of blessings for special occasions but whilst the book had blessings for Silver and Golden Weddings it had none for a Diamond Wedding. Ever the improviser Canon John made one up.

Future Events:Sunday 8th September: Diocesan pilgrimage to St Mary’s Church at Cleator, which was designed by E.W. Pugin. It was opened in 1872. In 1978 the interior was radically altered, there is now a central altar surrounded by seating in a diamond pattern. The stained glass windows especially those added in the 1950’s are very striking. The Grotto at Cleator was built in 1927 as a shrine in honour of Our Lady. It was built with stone from the local mine, Pit Banks, and made to represent the Grotto at Lourdes. It is now a place of pilgrimage for people from Lancashire and Cumbria.

Saturday 21st September: Parish visit to Ladyewell, Preston, which is the Diocesan Shrine of Lancaster, and encompasses the beautiful church of St Mary and Ladyewell House and grounds, the site of the well. The devotion at Ladyewell is ecumenical, attracting members of other Faiths.

Saturday 2nd November: Parish Day of Recollection at Hyning Hall.

Bolton-le-Sands WITuesday 9 July Bolton-le-Sands WI met for their July meeting. In the absence of Hazel Short, Brenda Wood had, as it turned out, the rather dubious honour of holding the meeting. From the start things did not go according to plan. The Speaker for the night for personal reasons was unable to attend-don`t panic!! Brenda had to do some serious thinking on her feet, but with the help of the Committee the meeting became a huge success.

However, business first and members were welcomed, visitors introduced , happy birthdays recorded, details given of forthcoming walks, Knit and Natter sessions and news of our next meeting which will be a social evening with in house entertainment by our own talented members, an evening to be much anticipated. Judith Spotswood, who is our Craft expert, encouraged members to attend and participate in the County Show at Garstang in September; advice and help is available.

We had an interesting report back by Glenys Dennison from Bare & District WI who had been the delegate to the recently held Council meeting in Cardiff. She gave a concise and detailed report back and told us there had been a very upbeat report on the fortunes of the WI from the Chairman, Ruth Bond. There had been many topics discussed, plus interesting and amusing talks from a variety of speakers, including Griff Rhys Jones and John Humphries, both of whom brought the house down.

Now it was time for TALES OF THE UNEXPECTED!! Brenda had made an executive decision and brought out the microphone and asked members to volunteer to speak for one minute on a variety of subjects. What followed turned out to be hilarious, one members spoke which led to another taking the `mike` and although it was a bit haphazard everyone laughed a great deal. Topics ranged from - getting old; men; new shoes; and children`s names ; Brenda ending the session remembering her time as a primary school teacher, more laughter. We had a much needed cup of tea and the meeting closed in the usual way, after a less than usual meeting! Marian.

Thank you...Thanks to everyone who has handed in their Children’s Society collecting boxes so far. If you still have a box, please could you return it to me within the next few weeks, then I can let everyone know how much we have raised. Many thanks

Margaret Hutchinson Parish Co-ordinator (824110)

Thank you...

Sandy & Brian James would like to thank all who sent messages, cards and flowers following Joyce’s death. The support and prayers have been greatly appreciated by all the family during this difficult time.

Carnforth Station : Main Line PlatformsAs some of you may have seen on the website of David Morris, MP, the Carnforth Station main line platforms are ‘withdrawn’ and not closed. In theory they are still open. (http://www.davidmorris.org.uk/news/carnforth-platforms-are-open ) David Morris asks, “I need the whole community to get behind me and write to Network Rail requesting that they place the platforms back in their rightful place at Carnforth Station.” May I suggest that you write in support of David to David Golding, Principal Strategic Planner LNW, The Mailbox, 100 Wharfside Street, Birmingham, B1 1RT, with whom I am in correspondence. It is appropriate to point out to him, as I have done, that the main line platforms are actually in daily use, but without access to the trains. It may also be appropriate to send a copy of your letter to Paul Plummer, Group Strategy Director, Network Rail, King’s Place, 90 York Way, London, N1 9AG. Robert Swain.

An unusual story of Recycling!Sitting in my loft since 1947 have been two seats from a world war two glider. My father bought a wooden, government surplus packing case, to use the wood in our new bungalow.I have often wondered if these seats were unique, and should I do something about it if they were. When two ex-Women’s Royal Air Force ladies came to live near by and I got to know them I explained about the seats.

So we set about tracing Air Force museums on the computer. To come to the point quickly, it took us only a month to dispose of said seats. They have gone to the Queen’s Border Regiment Museum in Carlisle Castle, where they are restoring, with a grant from the lottery, a glider, found twenty years ago in a farmer’s field at Kirkby Lonsdale. He had purchased a case like my parent had done but his contained an almost complete glider.

When the assistant curator from the museum came to collect the seats, we gleaned the following information from him. 1,600 gliders were manufactured by Ford in the U.S.A. All of which were shipped to the U.K. in crates of American Pine wood and all saw active service, mainly in the Sicily campaign where the Border Regiment saw action. The glider is a Wacko, (Weaver Aircraft Corporation.) Here they were called Hadrian gliders.

One glider was left in each invaded country and the crashed remains of the rest came back to the U.K. and were sold off. Worldwide there are sixteen gliders left, ten with only cockpits and two with wings, one of which is at Carlisle. Each crate had 8,000 board feet of timber, so it was a useful purchase when everything was in short supply in 1947. My loft is boarded with this American Pine timber.

These gliders carried mainly equipment, and leaking fuel made them develop an impervious membrane to oil and fuel, now known as formica. The load was pulled into the glider by a system of pulleys, one of which now operates my loft ladder.

Covering these seats upstairs, which held the usual junk one keeps, were two of our original blackout curtains. The gentleman was as pleased to accept them, as he was the seats, as they are creating a 1940,s room in the museum, to be opened in 2014. My mother hated plain sewing, if she thought they would end their lives in a museum I bet she would have taken more care in their production!

Betty Cottam

Editor’s note : Some readers may know that the Lancaster based Waring and Gillow also produced parts for gliders, and the Mosquito aircraft, in the furniture workshops, while kit-bags, tents and camouflage nets were made by the upholstery department.

The picture shows Betty with the glider seat

Bolton-le-Sands CE Primary SchoolLoaves and Fishes ClubThe school’s Christian Club, “Loaves and Fishes” did a wonderful job in organising the July First Friday Worship at Holy Trinity. They also raised £160 from the sponsored walk fundraiser for WaterAid, and collected a further £50 from the First Friday congregation. A big “well done” is sent to all the members of the Club.

Holy Trinity RoofIn response to the news of the theft of lead from the church roof, Year 6 pupils quickly organised a Fun Run - in pyjamas! This raised the wonderful total of £327 to help towards the cost of repairing the damage to the roof. Thanks to all involved.

Year 6 LeaversYear 6 children enjoyed their last few days in school. They celebrated with a meal together at Marco’s, and they were a real credit to themselves and to the school.

There were 2 special events in the final week:1. On Monday 22 July at 1.40pm the children presented a performance to their parents and to

the whole school.2. The Leavers’ Service was held in Holy Trinity Church on the final Wednesday afternoon,

when they were joined by parents and family members for this special service.

Good luck to all our Year 6 children - they have been a credit to the school and we wish them well as they move on to their chosen secondary schools.

Thank You... Margaret & Alan Crossley would like to say, “Thank-you for all the love and friendship we received dur-ing the 14 years we were at Bolton-le-Sands. A special thank-you for the wonderful gifts, cards and good wishes you gave us when we left. We are settling well in our new surroundings including the local church, but miss you all very much.”If anybody would like to contact Margaret and Alan, please see Karen Hillis or Pam Bentley for details.

Scouts’ Swimming GalaI set off to the university pool in glorious sunshine, in the back of the car our 3 swimming trophies from past victories, convinced none of the 3 were returning home, having heard 16th Morecambe were wanting our trophies, with Caton and Forton fast on their heels! The new(ish) building at the university looked fantastic as I pulled in, nervous anticipation now starting as I met up with Gareth. We then received the news, 2 Beavers had pulled out, “No way” I thought, that left 4 Cubs and 2 Beavers to contest 7 races, defeat at this early stage seemed inevitable and the scouts weren’t to arrive for another 2 hours!! “No” I thought, now is the time to introduce the Beavers and Cubs to rule 5. After plenty of motivational speeches from Gareth and myself, clapping of hands and general joviality (amongst other things tying our team banner to the poolside rails with carrier bags and bits of string from the bottom of one of the parents handbags) the Gala commenced. The Cubs started well with Nancy slotting excellent times with Owen, Joe and Josh all finishing respectably, but vitally scoring points. The Gala is about scoring points, then the win if possible!! In between the cubs antics, our two Beavers were also in action, James giving a good show in his individual freestyle with Rule 5 being applied to the full effect for the beavers relay, a relay that historically needs four fresh Beavers - we had One and James! The duo of James and Douglas were to contest the Beaver final relay, Jason (one of the Scouts) being sent out to poolside, to encourage (or retrieve!!) the Beavers if required, after all, swimming a length, getting hoisted out and told to walk not run back to the start and swim another length takes some doing. Fair play. Maximum effort indeed. That part of the gala was over, chit chat coming out was a win for 1stForton and it was. One of our 3 trophies gone south! Arrive the scouts all 3 of them, Jason was on poolside already after (covertly) winning the cubs / beavers leaders race against Tarzan, Jane and our Gareth!! We then received more unexpected news, the scouts had to swim 2 lengths each, a good deal of “Bulling” up and rule 5 reinforced. Backstroke first, Jason up, a 1st place. James nailed another first place in the breaststroke, with Matthew giving a great performance in the fly with a 3rd, Helena very nearly caused an upset by taking two county swimmers to the very edge (I would love to see a photo) a freestyle 3rd for her. Things were hotting up nicely for the relays, with Rule 5 now being shouted across the pool by Team BLS, we could see the worrying glances from 16th, Caton and Forton!! Up first - Freestyle. Matthew 3rd, James 2nd, Helena 1st and with Jason flying up the lane for 1st Place. That showed them!

Individual medley relay – Jason set the team up with a couple of seconds advantage with his backstroke, James’s breaststroke held, Matthew’s ‘fly (a sacrificial stroke at the best of times) also held, with Helena powering on to maintain the lead and complete the relay double, that’s one trophy coming home. Things had now calmed down around the pool, for the scouts job done and they all looked ready and hungry for more !! With the trophy in the bag none of the team nor I took much interest in how the Group results were coming out, after all 16th Morecambe and 1stForton had been pushing all afternoon. “In first place and 2013 District Champions……………2nd Bolton-Le-Sands” That’s it!! TWO trophies coming home to our hut, those two Beavers who gave everything during their relay, the 4 cubs pushing on through with their relays and the Scouts had done enough, rule 5 had been implemented and followed by all sections. It is a shame 53rd Lancaster already have the Group Nickname “Spartans”

Gold Scout AwardTo achieve the Chief Scout Gold Award you have to complete in total 8 challenge badges; 6 of the challenge badges are compulsory, which cover all areas of scouting. These 6 are: Promise; Community; Fitness; Creative; Global and Outdoor. You then have to choose 2 extra badges out of 3: Outdoor Plus; Adventure and Expedition. My two options were Adventure and Expedition and I completed my Chief Scout Gold Award earlier this summer. When you have completed your gold award you are invited by the county to a presentation evening to receive your award with scouts in the county who have also completed the Gold Award.
