Congratulations must go to the young people whose performances were worthy of a Broadway production. Much thanks also to Mrs Kelly for her creative genius in directing the play, and to our very own teachers who worked with Mrs Kelly to bring her vision to life. We are a relatively small school and this was just another example of us punching well above our weight. I would like to specifically thank key staff: Mr Marano, Assistant Director; Sophie Ricca, Vocal Director; Monica Licciardello, Musical Director; Megan Qualischefski and Sherri-Lee Hudson, Choreography along with our students Lara Stewart and Sarah Mosch, Assistant Choreographers. The Addams Fami- ly Band was also made up of our staff: Conductor & Keyboard, Monica Licciardello; Keyboard, Elisa- beth Gordon; Trumpet, Mark Smith; Electric Guitar, Georgia Martel; Bass Guitar, John Goulter; Per- cussion Paul Neilson, and Isobelle Lawrence in Year 11 was also on Percussion. Many other teachers, staff members and students also stepped up on the night to sell tickets and programs, and to act as ushers. We are pleased to announce that our #STEM Like A Pats Girl Conference, which will be held in Au- gust, sold out in under a week of tickets being released. It is heartening to see the value that parents and their daughters place on engaging in the STEM fields, especially given that many jobs of the future will rely on an understanding of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. Heading off to Camps has been a great way to end the term. I was fortunate to be able to attend some of the camps spending a day with the Year 11 girls at the Genazanno Retreat on the Atherton Tablelands before visiting the Year 9 girls at Echo Creek. There is much written on the benefits of getting close and personal with Mother Nature which includes boosting energy and the immune sys- tem, enhancing creativity and restoring focus, just to name a few. I do hope the girls look to fill their holiday break with interesting activities that include being outdoors. My husband and I are very much looking forward to travelling to Italy over the mid-year vacation for my Annual Leave. There is something very special about immersing myself in the world in which my parents were born and speaking my first language, falteringly at first and then more confidently as time progresses. I love the architecture, the food, the amazing scenery and rich history, but mostly I enjoy talking to the locals and making sense of my own cultural heritage. So until next term, arriverdeci ! NEWS UPDATE TERM 2 WEEK 9 2019

We were so excited to hear that St Patrick’s College Townsville was named as a Finalist for Best Re-

gional School in the Australian Education Awards. You just have to follow our Facebook page to see that our girls and our teachers are constantly striving to excel - whether that be in the classroom, on

the sports field, in performance, through immersive learning or through service to our community. Congratulations to our teachers and students; how wonderful for them to be recognised in this way!

The Addams Family musical was such a mysterious, spooky, entertaining and professional production. When we realised earlier in the year that we would not have the Civic Theatre as a venue due to

flood damage, we were much relieved to have the Port of Townsville step in to offer us their Quay-side Terminal venue for the performances. I cannot praise Mrs Kelly and her team highly enough for

Their retreat focus was on leadership and personal growth. The Year 12 students spent their time in Townsville and

participated in a “Women of the Future Conference.” Their retreat also had a community service focus and they all gave

their time to volunteer at local charities and schools.

There have been many wonderful stories from all of the staff and students about the adventures they had while on

Camp. These whole school activities are made possible by our dedicated staff who willingly give up their time to ensure

the students have an enjoyable time. In particular, thanks must go to the Camp Coordinators Ms Lizzie Wood, Ms Lisa

Mowbray, Ms Megan Christie, Ms Kirsten Anderson, Ms Maria Franettovich and Ms Catherine Rentoule for their willing-

ness to plan these retreats. A selection of photos can be found on Pages 9 & 10. I hope all students and their families

curing a space at this event.

On Tuesday, 11 June, fifty Year 6 students came

across to the College from St Joseph’s Catholic

School, The Strand for a high school lab experience.

Students were introduced to the value of microscopes

for examining “mini-beasts” from freshwater samples.

Students took the opportunity to look how diverse

freshwater samples can be and gained an understanding as to how we can

use this knowledge to better understand water quality. There were some

excellent drawings and notes taken as they observed how these animals

moved, fed and behaved. It was a fantastic opportunity to nurture the natu-

ral curiosity of our Year 6 neighbours.

a part of the Percussion Ensemble. Recently,

Isabelle had a big role as part of the musical en-

attending every week, she has made a large contribution to our instal-

lation Plenty More, and has been a great help to the Art department.

YEAR 9 & 10 GEOGRAPHY EXCURSIONS

This term, our intrepid Year 9 and 10 Geographers have been out exploring our agricultural and

urban environments. The Year 9 students took a day trip to the Burdekin agricultural region

learning about the realities, and the role of technology, in food production—from seed to super-

market. Closer to home, the Year 10 students had lunch in the Perfumed Gardens, participated

in Townsville City Council’s Liveability Study and Rate Your Neighbourhood Surveys, and also

took time to learn about the Waterfront Development Priority Area from Townsville City

Council Architects and Landscapers. The real-world truly is our classroom.

NORTH QUEENSLAND CONSTITUTIONAL CONVENTION Lauren Newman

Indigenous Support Program leader

On Friday, 14 June, four of our Year 11 students were

invited to participate in the Department of Education’s

North Queensland Region - Schools Constitutional

Convention for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander

Students, held at James Cook University’s Townsville

Campus. This program has been running since 1995 and

is designed to educate senior secondary students about the Australian Consti-

tution.

Layleeta Neil, Maleta Warrior, Heaven Wilson and Javanah Bero accompanied

Legal Studies Teacher, Ms Lara O’Kane, to the full-day event. Students partici-

pated in a plebiscite vote, as well as experienced a mock bill being passed

through Parliament. The students all enjoyed the day, were

able to form connections with students from other local

secondary schools, and definitely came away with new life

skills that they will be able to use in the future.

Prior to the event, one student was asked to nominate to

be the Speaker representing the College on the day, and

Layleeta Neil volunteered without hesitation. For Layleeta

this also involved creating a prepared speech to deliver on

the day addressing the topic “Indigenous Representation in

the Australian Parliament”. Layleeta spoke confidently

about how dedicated seats for Indigenous and Torres Strait

representatives would increase the interest of Indigenous

people in standing for elections, overall making the Gov-

ernment and Parliament more relevant to them. We

proudly announce that Layleeta placed second overall, and

was selected to be a part of the Queensland Delegate to

the National Convention to be held in Canberra in 2020.

UN YOUTH AOTEAROA LEADERSHIP TOUR

Over the July holidays, Year 12 student, Ella Evans, will be one of sixteen Year 10-12

Australian students heading off to New Zealand for the UN Youth Aotearoa Leader-

ship Tour. The Aotearoa Leadership Tour is an opportunity like no other to learn

about Indigenous rights and culture, and to explore Australia’s relationship with its

First Peoples through an intercultural, two-week tour of New Zealand. Congratula-

tions Ella, we wish you all the best!

Term 2 | Week 9 | 2019

On 6-8 June, 88 cast and 15 crew from St

Patrick’s College, Ignatius Park College

and St Margaret Mary’s College created

the music theatre spectacle, The Addams

Family. After just 15 weeks of rehearsal,

the staff and students involved were able to produce an ex-

tremely high-quality performance: An experience that for many,

will never be forgotten.

The Addams Family musical received fantastic reviews from both

the Huxley Press and in ‘Letters to the Editor’ published in the

Townsville Bulletin. Visit the College’s Facebook page to read

more about the event: https://www.facebook.com/

StPatricksCollegeTownsville/

It goes without saying that events such as this are a team effort.

Thank you to all staff, students and their families for their contri-

bution and commitment to The Addams Family production.

Without your support, we would not have been able to produce

something so special. If you missed out on purchasing a program

on the evening and would like to obtain one, please contact the

school office, there are a limited number available.

LIBRARY NEWS Alice Manning - Librarian

In recent weeks, the Library has hosted a wonderful display from the Year 7 Ancient Egypt assess-

ment artefacts. The variety of tombs, mummies and pyramids have certainly enhanced our library

space. Also on display, is a tribute to the fabulous cast and crew of The Addams Family, which

includes action shots of the cast and a collection of original Addams Family drawings by the

school’s very own, Mr Shane Gallagher.

We are happy to announce that our self-checkout for borrowing resources is up and running, and

coming soon is a catalogue search station, enabling students easy access to the catalogue to support their research and

reading pursuits.

We have had a great response to our “Request a Book” initiative, with many new books having now arrived and avail-

able for borrowing in Term 3. I’d like to strongly encourage students to continue to let us know what they’d like to

read to ensure our library is responsive to students’ interests.

Finally, our latest competition “Guess the number of fiction books in the library,” has already received a large number

of responses. The competition continues into Term 3 and will culminate in a mystery prize draw for the student

whose guess is closest to the correct answer.
