I guess we should stop thinking that winter is here. I don’t think winter was really part of the weather pattern this year. I say we think about warmer weather which signals the end of the year. The calendar is full of instructional activities that enhance and promote student learning. Check out our website for additional information. Many of you have noticed the new sign that is posted at the bus loop. Traffic flow had been a problem for busses in the morning and afternoon. LCPS Transportation Department did on sight observations and concluded that a yield sign was necessary. A “Yield to Busses” at the entrance to the bus loop is now up. Please heed this sign in order to keep our traffic pattern safe. February closes with daily recognition of famous African Americans during our AM show. The 5th grade newscasters have highlighted someone each morning during this month. All of our children have been exposed to the contributions these individuals made to our nation. As February ends, March is really March madness. We will have SOLs, field trips, assemblies, student recognitions, yearbooks, drills, Book Fair, Staff Basketball game, end of 3rd quarter, etc. This month has something for everyone! March opens with Specialists’ Night on Thursday evening, March 1. This is a time that families can join their children and participate in the specials. The specials include art, technology, FLES, guidance, library, music and PE. We begin at 6:30 and end at 7:30 p.m. We kicked off this week with an opening PEP assembly to celebrate Read Across America Week or better known as Dr. Seuss Week. Children were led in cheers by The Cat in the Hat (Dr. Brocious), Thing 1 (Mrs. Brownell) and Thing 2 (Ms. Clement). The gym was rocked by emcee, Coach McFarlane and the LVHS Girls Basketball Team. All students pledged to read 49,000 minutes this week. Once this goal is reached, KWC will have Thing 1 and Thing 2 relay races. It is a great way to end the week. Our learning continues! Money for Lunch? Check your child’s lunch

account balance from the convenience of your own com-puter on Café Prepay www.pay4lunch.com.

**You’ll need your child’s 6-digit ID number to register. The students use this number to buy lunch.

Parents will be notified of negative lunch bal-ances every Sunday night through the Connect–Ed system. An alternative lunch will be served if the ac-count is not paid when the balance is over $5.00. If the balance is not paid, the child will be given the opportunity to call home or will be given milk and a cheese sandwich for lunch if payment cannot be ar-ranged.

Please check your child’s balance online. We really don’t want to give out cheese sandwiches.

Green Crocs Report The Green Crocs held a cafeteria trash weigh-in on

January 30, 2012. After learning how much waste we are generating at lunch, the Green Crocs met and set goals for reducing waste in our cafeteria (see graph below). Green Crocs Club Sponsors, Mrs. Brown and Mrs. Stephenson, shared this information and the new goals with the school on the morning show. They will hold a follow-up weigh-in on March 12.

Nine 4th grade students have become a part of the Green Crocs Team, Shane Washko, Kassidy Cox, Melissa Sellards, Henry Jardine, Kate Knepper, Will Oppenhimer, Mia Gryniuk, Ciara Donnangelo, and Kayla Crigger.

The Green Crocs are led by school volunteers Kathy Sellards, Darlene Jardine, and Linda "Nana" Hol-lidge. They are very excited to spread the news of The Green Crocs at KWC!

Helping with the Weigh-in are parents Mr. McGushin and Mrs. Cagnina.

FLES What are your stu-

dents learning in FLES this month?

In the month of March, 1st grade will be learning vocabulary in Span-ish about the family and farm animals. Second grade is also learning vocabulary about farm animals and will learn Zoo animals. In 3rd grade we’ll be reading in and talking about the restaurant in Spanish. Our 4th graders will learn vocabulary about plants, animals in the ecosystem and take a reading assessment on ecosystems. The 5th grade is using SYMTALK Books. SYMTALK is a unique approach to teaching students how to form full sentences using visuals. The 5th grade will also be preparing for the end of the year Cumulative Assessment in class.

If you are curious why we have FLES, it is be-cause:

1) FLES promotes oral/language skills; 2) It has been proven that the best natural lan-

guage acquisition takes place during elementary school years;

3) FLES supports other school subjects and Stan-dards of Learning.

Please feel free to contact me if you have further questions or want more detail on what your student is learning in class.

You can contact Mrs. McKnight via e-mail: [email protected] .

News from the Gym It is almost time for our 3rd annual staff basketball game. The game will be held again at Woodgrove High School on Saturday, April 21, 2012. The game will feature our Ken Culbert Teachers vs. Hamilton Elementary Teachers. T-Shirt order forms went home February 24, and are due back by

March 2 (copy attached to this newsletter). Tickets and spirit items such as Foam Fingers,

Pom Poms, and Face Stickers will be going on sale in April. More information on tickets will be sent out closer to the game, but be sure to save the date so you can come and cheer on your fa-vorite teachers!

Counselor’s Corner In February, students in 1st grade learned about Friendship including behaviors that attract and repel oth-

ers. They also started a unit on Feelings. Grade 2 students learned about Peer Pressure, Diversity and began to explore Self-Control. Grades 3, 4, and 5 continued work with study skills and began a unit on conflict resolu-tion. You may have seen their “friendship problem solver” come home!

In March 1st grade will continue to explore feelings with an emphasis on how to deal with strong feelings. They will also learn about using caring language when faced with conflicts. Second grade will complete a pro-ject on self-control. Please look for their “How My Engine Runs” book to come home by the end of the month. Please ask them about it! We will also begin a unit on conflict resolution. Grades 3-5 will all continue to explore peaceful conflict resolution. Third grade will review and further explore handling strong feelings as they relate to conflicts.

I am continuing to meet with groups of students during lunches. These will continue to run throughout the year in sessions of between four and six weeks. No student may participate in a lunch group without parent/guardian permission. I am working hard to ensure that every child that could benefit from a group is able to participate in one.

RECYCLE TWIST BOTTLE CAPS #5

KWC students and families are KICKING THE PLASTIC CAPS OUT OF THE OCEANS & RIVERS! Thanks to your hard work collecting all sizes, shapes and colors of twist-type #5 bottle caps the past month, we have sent 5 COPY PAPER BOXES full of caps to the recycling plant!! We’re up to 49 Boxes!! By keeping the caps out of the oceans, waterways and the environment, we are reducing pollution and removing interesting objects wildlife would otherwise eat thinking it was food. WAY TO GO!! Keep up the great work!

Art Beat March is Youth Art Month. To celebrate,

our KWC halls are full of student art. Each art student chose one piece of art from their portfolios to display. Come see why we’re so proud of our young artists!

“Shine your Smile Day” is Coming! Kenneth W. Culbert is hosting Smile

Virginia, the mobile dentist, on Friday, June 1, 2012. Smile Virginia will bring its on-site preventive dental care ser-vices because we know how important good oral health is to our children’s overall general health.

The Smile Virginia team will set up a mini-dental office in our building and can provide dental examinations, cleanings, fluoride treatments, x-rays and sealants (if necessary) for children from 18 months to 18 years old who return completed forms*.

Smile Virginia wants to make sure no child is turned away because of financial need! Medicaid and most private insurances will cover all services 100%, so there will be NO COST to the family. Families who do not have insurance can choose to pay a subsi-dized fee or use our financial assistance to cover the cost of service.

Signing up your children to see the Smile Virginia team is EASY! If you want your child to see the den-tist on “Shine Your Smile Day,” just fill out one permis-sion slip per child and turn it into the Health Clinic by 3/3/12. *Note: If you have already returned a permission slip in September 2011, your child is already on the Smile Virginia roster.

A Note From the Health Clinic

Students who are returning to school after a hospi-talization (surgery or illness), or a procedure (broken bone or tests) must have a release from the physician. The release should include the following information: approval for the student to return to school, the activity level allowed, any current restrictions, and the duration of those restrictions.

• Children who have fevers (100 degrees and above) should be kept home for 24 hours after the fever subsides.

• If your child is ill because of a contagious dis-ease, such as strep throat, chicken pox, etc. or head lice, it would be helpful to note the reason for the absence when you call the absentee call-line. This will help the school take meas-ures to know the extent of the disease or head lice and reduce its spread.

Be sure to keep the emergency contact phone numbers and information updated so that we can reach you if your child is ill or injured.

Medication in School Parents/Guardians are advised to give

medications at home whenever possible. If it is necessary to medication at school, the following regulations must be followed:

A parent/guardian must bring medication (including cough drops) to the health clinic assistant or designee. All medication brought to school must be in the original container with appropriate label intact. Please use Medication Authorization Form 12:3 for all Over-the-Counter and Prescription Medications.

Non-prescription medications must be in the origi-nal package with the name of the medication and in-structions. It must be accompanied by a signed parent note or Medication Authorization Form 12:3 completed and signed by a parent (available on our Web site).

Prescription Medications require written instruc-tions from a physician in order to administer prescrip-tion medication, which should include:

• Student’s name • Name and purpose of medication • Dosage and time of administration • Possible side effects and actions to take if

those occur • End date for administering the medicine • Parent signature which gives permission to

administer medication and to contact the physi-cian if necessary

• Physician signature All prescription medication must be in the original

pharmacy bottle with proper label containing the stu-dent’s name, medication, dosage and instructions for administration.

Parents must transport all medication (including cough drops) to and from school.

For Rising 6th Grade Parents The State of Virginia requires that all students en-

tering middle school must have a diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis (Tdap) vaccine booster unless the student received a tetanus-containing vaccine within the previ-ous five years before the start of the 2012-2013 school year. The primary purpose of this requirement is to add protection for pertussis (whooping cough).

For rising sixth graders, documentation of the Tdap vaccine booster, any vaccine containing tetanus given after August 27, 2007, or a medical exemption if your child will not be eleven by August 27, 2012, should be given to the nurse or health clinic assistant at your child’s elementary school this school year.

If your child will not receive the Tdap vaccine booster before the end of this school year, documen-tation should be given to the middle school or high school this summer. Your child will not be allowed to start school without this immunization, documentation of a tetanus-containing vaccine within the previous five years of the beginning of the 2012-2013 school year, or a medical exemption.

A list of students who require this immunization will be provided to each middle school at the end of this school year. There will be no grace period for your child to begin middle school on August 27 without this vaccine.

Relay Recess of KWC - May 4 The Relay Recess of KWC will be held on Friday, May 4, 2012 from 2:35

p.m. to 4:00 p.m. We will “Relay” around the track to honor and/or remember loved ones touched by cancer. Donations will be accepted to benefit the American Cancer Society.

Here are the highlights of the presentation given by Jeni Stuart at the February 16, 2012 PTA meeting:

What is Relay Recess? The Relay Recess develops community between students, school personnel, and parents. The Relay Re-

cess focuses on cancer education & prevention, physical activity, honoring & remembering those touched by cancer, and fundraising for the American Cancer Society.

Why host a Relay Recess? KWC is hosting the Relay because cancer is a disease that touches everyone, including children. It is a

way for our children to develop a spirit of community service and build character. Through activities and les-sons, the students will learn the benefits of nutrition, physical activity, sun safety, and tobacco prevention that will help them develop healthy, life-long habits to prevent cancer and other diseases.

Tailored to Suit Our School The Relay Recess of KWC is an after school activity from 2:35 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. where students and staff

walk around the track to relay for one mile. All students participating must return a signed Registration Form by April 27. Parents are invited to attend. During the After the Relay Celebration, everyone will enjoy music, games, snacks, face painting, and more.

Survivors’ Welcome Reception & First Lap Students (and staff) will be invited to ask family and friends touched by cancer to attend the Relay Recess.

Survivors and their families will enjoy the Survivors' Welcome Reception (with refreshments, door prizes and more) from 2:00 p.m. to 2:35 p.m., and then walk the first lap of the Relay Recess.

Fundraising for ACS Fundraising for the American Cancer Society Is voluntary, for students and staff. Students will receive the

ACS Fundraising Club Donation Envelopes on April 18; they are due back on May 4. The ACS Youth Fund-raising Club has Star Level Incentives (prizes) based on the amount raised.
