Active School Travel Awards

Last night I had the privilege of attending the Active School Travel Awards at the Brisbane City Hall. Whilst we did not win any major awards, Holland Park was commended, in particular, for the scooter and bike training that our students participated in this year. Over the year we have maintained a solid commitment to Active School Travel. Next year we intend to grow our participation through a range of targeted events and incentives. I would like to sincerely thank the parents-Mel, Trish and Juanita and our fabulous administration assistant Ashlee for our success with Active School Travel over the past two years. Next year we will be bigger and even better!

Teacher Opinions (based on 38 responses)

While we want to maximise the attendance of each student at our school, it is not appropriate to send them along to school when they are sick. I possess no medical qualifications but it is fairly easy to determine when a child cannot learn because they are obviously not feeling well. In these cases, for the child and for his or her classmates, the best place to be is at home. From time to time when students become unwell at school, we do need you to be able to have someone who can pick your child up in a timely way and take them home.

Hello my name is Corina and I’m one of the chaplaincy representatives here at Holland Park State

School. I really like having this responsibility; being able to decide special days that the whole school

contributes to is really special. I love my job and I’m so thankful Holland Park State School lets the

grade six students contribute so much in our last year. sSadly it’s all coming to the end. I think the

leaders and grade six students did a great job this year we should all remember that!

Why I like being a captain

Hi, my name is Jamie B and I am the Bowen Vice–Captain.

Let me tell you what I like about being a leader.

Firstly, I love working together with the other captains to give all the students an enjoyable time at

Holland Park State School.

I love helping others in need to make them happy. Last, but not least, I love making friends along

the way and sharing my memories.

So if you one day want to be a leader like us, you have to do what’s best for your fellow students and

work hard.

Thank you

The World Change Agents workshop was a magnificent experience as it taught me about marketing procedures and social enterprises. During this workshop we created a fake business with a social focus. Through this business we aim to solve current social issues in our community today.

Ideas for Writing at Home

Writing is a part of every learning area at school and is vital for many aspects of everyday life. It's crucial to encourage your child's writing skills as much as possible right from the early years through to upper primary.

Tips and ideas for parents and caregivers

Spend quality time each day talking with your child. Ideas come from shared and personal stories.

Read to your child - not just stories but a wide range of fiction and non-fiction texts - and discuss the ways that authors use words to shape their ideas.

Be a writing model for your child and encourage her/him to write alongside you.

Create real opportunities for your child to write, such as letters, posters or invitations.

Have a variety of writing materials readily available.

Talk to your child about his/her writing and read it through together.

Praise your child for having a go.

Don’t dwell on mistakes, focus on the progress made.

If your child brings a spelling list home to learn, try to make the practice fun by playing games that encourage careful listening to the sounds in words and looking for letter patterns. Your child may enjoy singing or reciting spellings, or writing them out and colouring letter patterns.

Talk about the reason for learning spelling. It’s not about the test but for using in writing.

Remember that writing can be difficult, so be available, supply help if asked and encourage progress.

Becoming an Expert Writer

To write means to 'plan, compose, edit and publish texts in print or digital forms. Writing usually involves activities using pencils, pens, word processors; and/or using drawings, models, photos to represent text; and/or using a scribe to record responses or produce recorded responses.' (Australian Curriculum definition) http://www.australiancurriculum.edu.au/english/structure

Teaching students to write is one of the most important, most challenging and most rewarding aspects of every teacher's work. In every year level and every learning area/subject, teachers must:

• Teach the knowledge, processes and skills students need to write well.

• Engage and inspire students to write, and write well.

Today, the power of the written word is sometimes downplayed or even ignored. Students may not fully appreciate how often spoken texts — news broadcasts, political speeches or famous lines from a blockbuster movie — begin as written texts, often laboriously drafted and crafted. Nor may they fully appreciate that the authors of all texts first had to learn how to write, and then how to write well.

People write for many different reasons. The purpose for writing is significant because it can influence language choice and the degree to which the writing needs to be 'finished', for example:

•Writing can be of high importance, as in students demonstrating their learning to their teacher.

•Writing can be less important, for example, students jotting down ideas to contribute to a group discussion.

Whatever the purpose, every student engaged in a writing task should be able to tell you why they are writing.

Expert writers also must keep their audience in mind. In order to appeal to and connect with the perceived values, interests and experiences of an intended audience, writers modify word choice, text content, structure and delivery method. Expert writers must be clear about their role in the writing. They know if they are: an expert, a storyteller, an investigator, the actual person writing, or a fictional 'I'.

Have a chat with your child this week and ask them about their daily writing. What was the purpose of your writing? Who was your audience? Who were you writing for? What was your role?

SCIENCE CLUB AT CAVENDISH ROAD

On Wednesday the 25th of October, Kiri B, Isabella F, Eli M and I went to Science Club at Cavendish

Road State High School. We learnt all about reflection and refraction, here’s a fun fact; there is not

actually seven colours in a rainbow, there are in fact six. Sir Isaac Newton didn’t like the number six

so instead he invented indigo. That makes seven. We also had a lot of fun experimenting with light

boxes, mirrors and colours. We played with concave, convex, double convex, double concave,

rectangular, circular and triangular mirrors, all of which had different light patterns.

YEAR 4 SUSTAINABLE PRACTICES

Sustainable Practices Spring into life at HPSS—Donations Welcome

You may have noticed the new vegetable gardens that have sprouted up around the school in past few weeks. The raised garden bed - pizza patch - beside M block is thanks to fundraising and approval from Chaplain Howard and his representative, Christine Dick. At the moment Year 4s, under my supervision, will be managing it. So far the students have really enjoyed this process. This would not have been possible either, without the incredible efforts and knowledge of Rob Miles, our groundsman, who helped with the setup.

Rob has also revitalised the older, previously disused, garden beds behind the hall and pool. I’m sure all will agree these contribute to making the school an even better place to be each day. No doubt, the Preps are going to enjoy helping and watching these grow. There is more space to fill, and I know there is a growing number of green thumbs in the community, so if anyone has any seedlings or worm tea they can donate that would be greatly appreciated. He has worked so hard on these, so next time you see him, why not let him know what a wonderful job he is doing. Any donations can be dropped off to M1 – 4CS classroom (close to Abbotsleigh St).

Clair Savage Year 4 Classroom Teacher

Holland Park State School was nominated as a finalist in the School of Excellence category and received a special mention for the provision of our new scooter and bike racks as well as the training provided to students for scooter and bike safety training. It was great to meet other parents, teachers and local councillors who were equally as enthusiastic about the program. Lots of great ideas were shared and celebrated throughout the evening.

Congratulations to this weeks’ Junior and Senior winners:

Oval Camp Out - Sat 28 & Sun 29 Oct

Another HPSS Camp Out done and once again a lot of tired but happy families heading home this morning, after a night of fun... and a breakfast feast of pancakes of course!

Roasting marshmallows over the campfires was a hit as always and the kids loved the idea of frolicking in school grounds in the dark of night.

Apparently very early morning is also a popular time to play a mass game of ‘tiggy’, which was well under way before most parents had even contemplated the idea of surfacing from their tents!

Thanks to all the parent volunteers, particularly Mat Slingsby, Ean Dungey, John Bromfield and Dylan Dawson and Trish Gibbons for behind the scenes magic and a big thank you to Kristian Leach for his tireless efforts to make this event the success it was!
