In my first year as President of the BrandonUniversity Foundation, I am happy to report positivegrowth. The annual giving to the Foundation hasbeen on a steady increase. With donations of over$1,400,000, gifts-in-kind of nearly $189,000, andstudent and government contributions of more than$900,000, the Foundation is in the process ofstrengthening its fundraising programs to create astronger and more sustainable future.

In October 2001, our new University President,Dr. Louis Visentin, delivered the SCOPE 20/20strategic plan and a new list of priorities forfundraising. A feasibility study was undertaken withthe help of Burk and Associates Ltd. Interviews were conducted with 70 communitymembers to test the feasibility of a multi-million dollar campaign. Recommendationsfrom the study suggested that the University and Foundation spend the next few yearsstrengthening existing fundraising programs, with particular emphasis on PlannedGiving. In that period of time, funds could be raised for a number of prioritizedprojects, with the SCOPE 20/20 Campaign public launch extended into the future.

In preparing for the SCOPE 20/20 Campaign, the Foundation’s job is to ensure that thecurrent programs are effectively implemented. Therefore, we have embarked on theambitious task of preparing our first ever multi-year strategic fundraising plan to bedelivered in October 2002.

Looking back over 2001, two other highlights stand out. Our Annual Event raised over$10,000, which was directed to an endowment for athletics scholarships. Later in theyear, philanthropist Michael Chernoff donated more than $500,000, which was matchedby the University and Foundation, creating BU’s largest ever scholarship endowmentfor entering students.

I wish to extend my warmest appreciation to the volunteers on the BrandonUniversity Foundation for their efforts over the past year. I’d like to extend specialcongratulations to Dr. Don Penny, recipient of the Association of FundraisingProfessionals, Manitoba Chapter Outstanding Volunteer Fundraiser Award for 2001.I’d also like to thank Mr. Ron Helwer, recipient of the 2002 Brandon UniversityFoundation Apex Award, and Mr. Kerry Hawkins, recipient of the 2002 BrandonUniversity Outstanding Volunteer Fundraiser Award for their dedication and service toBrandon University. Finally, I’d like to thank all of our donors for their continuedsupport.

Supporters of the Brandon University FoundationPresidents’ Circle have become a special part of a uniquedonor family. In 2001, membership in the Presidents’Circle steadily increased with donors providing $42,685.08towards the enhancement of programs and services oncampus.

A contribution to the Presidents’ Circle can make asignificant difference to the future of programs andservices on campus. Each gift, paid through either pledgedinstallments or as a one-time donation, can purchasebooks to increase library acquisitions, establish an annualscholarship or bursary that will assist a student to pursuetheir academic goals, or acquire valuable researchequipment.
