message from the president and ceoLooking back, 2012 was undoubtedly among the most dynamic and productive years in IOF’s history.

Above all, it was marked by unprecedented outreach on many fronts.

In terms of scope, IOF moved beyond the borders of osteoporosis to reach out to the chronic disease community, while expanding its remit to encompass muscle and joint health.

With the election of a new Board of Governance, for the first time with equal representation from each region, IOF completed the final phase of its regional development strategy. This was further strengthened by Regional Advisory Councils in all three regions in which IOF maintains regional offices.

For the first time, IOF regional meetings were successfully staged in four regions of the world: Asia-Pacific, Europe, Latin America and the Middle East & Africa. In all, more than 7000 health care professionals profited directly from outstanding opportunities for education and research through IOF meetings and training courses. The new ‘IOF Young Investigator Mentoring Programme’, held as pilot programmes in Jordan and Kuala Lumpur, was well received by the participants. This programme underscores IOF’s strong commitment to the promotion of science and research across cultures and borders.

IOF’s Committee of Scientific Advisor Working Groups continued their impressive work, publishing nine reviews and statements on topics of importance to the bone, muscle and joint field. And, there’s much more in the pipeline for 2013!

In regard to public outreach, IOF launched a stimulating new website featuring modern design and new interactive mapping content. The new site serves as a portal which offers individual membership options and online access to IOF’s scientific publications. Over time IOF will build a community of many thousands of individual members in the musculoskeletal field.

The World Osteoporosis Day ‘Stop at One’ campaign resounded widely, with significant media impact that reached millions of consumers and health care professionals on all continents. The theme underlined IOF’s dedication to secondary fracture prevention and its new ‘Capture the Fracture’ programme to promote the implementation of fracture liaison services worldwide.

These many new developments have set the stage for the coming year, during which we look forward to consolidating and expanding our effective programmes in science and public outreach.

new board oF Governance elected A new Board structure designed to give equal representation to all five regions (each region with four elected members) was introduced in 2012. The newly elected members of the Board, as well as ex-officio members, took their seats for the first time in March 2012, beginning a four year term until 2016. In Asia-Pacific, Latin America, Middle East & Africa, where IOF has regional administrative offices, two of the four Board members in each region were elected by the regional CnS and the remaining two were elected by the global membership. In Europe and north America, where IOF does not have administrative offices, all four seats were elected by the global membership.

With the launch of its new website platform (see page 23), IOF also launched a new membership option for interested individuals around the world. via the website, individuals can register as IOF members (at no charge) to receive considerable benefits, including online access to the IOF journals Archives of Osteoporosis and Progress in Osteoporosis, regular e-news including the

monthly bulletin ‘BoneBlast’, and discounts at IOF Scientific Meetings. For a yearly fee of 50 uSD (25 USD for WHO designated low-income countries) individuals can opt for the ‘Pro2’ membership which additionally gives online access to the journals Osteoporosis International and Calcified Tissue International.

In 2012, IOF completed the important process of regionalization that began in 2009. now, with four elected Board members from each of the five regions, there is equitable representation at IOF’s highest level of governance.

IOF’s Regional Programme is designed to facilitate collaboration among the member associations in three designated regions: Asia Pacific, Middle East & Africa, and Latin America. These are the regions which benefit from a local IOF regional office. Latin America held its first elections for a Regional Advisory Council (RAC) in 2012, so that all three of the targeted regions now have well-functioning RAC councils (see list in the respective regions shown in this report).

Through its regionalization programme IOF aims to:

• develop a strong regional structure based on collaboration of local societies, with programmes and policies targeted to the regions’ specific needs

• assIst the regions to acquire the resources needed to educate health professionals and empower patients

• strenGthen osteoporosis associations worldwide to better serve the needs of the patients and health professionals in the region

World Osteoporosis Day (WOD) on October 20th marks the pinnacle of a year-long campaign to educate and spread awareness of osteoporosis and bone health around the world. Each year the IOF-led WOD campaign reaches out to the public and patients, health professionals, media and policy makers. IOF’s more than 200 member societies are provided with campaign publications and posters in seven languages and are encouraged to use these tools for their own national WOD campaigns.

IOF’s popular 2012 WOD campaign focused on the important issue of secondary fracture prevention. Although fractures have enormous personal and health-economic impact, over 80% of people who experience fractures are neither diagnosed nor treated for osteoporosis. In an effort to close the care gap, IOF issued a new report directed at health professionals and a patient-oriented campaign under the ‘Stop at One’ banner – calling on all adults over 50 to ask for osteoporosis testing following a first fracture.

Administration and Finance

From a financial standpoint I am pleased to report a 24% increase in revenue for 2012. The proportionally lower increase (17%) in operating expenditure reflects the increased output in the area of regional meeting organization. Consequently we have also seen a strong and welcome increase in the operating gain in 2012 of 582 000 ChF as compared to 186 000 ChF in 2011.

Both fundraising and congress organization play a central role in terms of IOF operations and staff responsibilities. Within one year, with its relatively small staff, IOF successfully staged four large regional meetings and the annual training course in Geneva. This was accomplished while advancing an array of new and ongoing programmes, an extensive World Osteoporosis Day campaign and the publication of the first Latin American Regional Audit. These accomplishments deserve recognition! Congratulations to the staff for their tremendous efforts and a job well done.

Investment income and expenditure have remained stable and we hope that 2013 will see significant growth in this area.

On behalf of IOF I would like to thank our Committee of Corporate Advisors as well as other corporate sponsors who have shown their continued commitment to IOF. Their support has permitted us to increase public and health professional outreach more than ever before.

I would also like to acknowledge our auditors, BDO, for their expert and timely services.

As we head into 2013 we look forward to another year of extensive programming and positive growth based on a healthy and stable financial foundation.

AS OF DECEMBER 31, 2012 in ChF

International osteoporosis Foundation - usa, Inc.

In order to establish a legal presence in north America “International Osteoporosis Foundation - uSA, inc” was established on December 2, 2004 as a not-for-profit corporation organized under the not-For-Profit Corporation Law of the State of new York.

In 2012 a correction of ChF181,494.60 (uSD191,127.42) is booked related to an error on the inclusion of the IOF uSA, Inc. accounts in the 2010 financial statements. This correction has no impact on IOF’s capital build-up: the gain for the year of 400,460.20 ChF is added to capital.

As of December 31, 2012, International Osteoporosis Foundation - uSA, Inc owes to the Foundation 107,049 ChF (2011: 268,677 ChF).

risk assessment

A risk analysis was performed in December 2010 by the CEO and IOF’s President. The risk analysis was presented to the Board in March 2011. In December 2011 the risk assessment performed in 2010 was updated by the CEO and IOF’s President and presented to the Board in March 2012.

the 206 a bone Fund

Following a decision by the Board of the Foundation, the 206 A Bone fund was liquidated during 2012. The assets invested in securities was combined with IOF’s investments and the fund’s capital was added to IOF’s capital. This decision was taken because the 206 A Bone fund had served it’s purpose over the years and the application of the assets and capital are similar to those of IOF’s main assets and capital.
