2015 Annual Report

www.globalshea.com

This year resulted in substantial achievement of our promotion, quality, and sustainability activities around the world.

After adoption of our sustainability program, I’m pleased to report 55 members are now building warehouses for women’s groups, offering cooperative development trainings, and piloting safety and conservation projects. It’s formidable to see African businesses, multinationals, NGOs, and women’s groups join hands to secure our industry. These partners are supporting 53,319 women through the program. It’s truly the power of the Global Shea Alliance.

We hosted four international conferences and exhibitions on three continents, and presented our interests at the World Trade Organization in Geneva. We added 41 new members from 13

countries including confectionary and cosmetic brands, suppliers, women’s groups, and NGOs. As we engage and educate all corners of our industry, we are removing trade barriers and creating new opportunities for our stakeholders.

We have reached a critical point in the development of our Alliance and need to increase the scale and reach of our activities.

Thank you to our executive committee, working groups, members, secretariat staff, sponsors, and partners for your efforts and collaboration. I look forward to a productive 2016.

LEGEND

90% of the world’s shea butter is a valued edible ingredient in chocolates and other confectionaries

Nearly 2 billion shea trees grow naturally on parklands in 21 African countries stretching from Senegal to South Sudan. 16,000,000 women living in rural communities individually collect the fresh fruits and the kernel is processed to extract a healthy vegetable oil known as “shea butter.”

Shea offers technical and health benefits as a cooking oil and food/cosmetic ingredient, and is widely available in Africa. With approximately 600,000 tons collected each year, the industry provides a critical source of

jobs and incomes to often poor and underserved communities.

•19 warehouses built & donated to women’s groups •713 tons of shea sold from warehouses•11,080 women trained in warehouse management•2,956 women contributed shea kernels to warehouses•25% increased profit over farm gate prices from

warehouses

Provision of warehouses to women collectors allow cooperatives to aggregate sufficient quantities of their product and sell directly to wholesale purchasers, greatly improving their profit per kilo sold. Activities under this work stream include warehouse construction, aggregation and warehouse management trainings, market linkages with wholesale buyers, and registration of women’s groups with local authorities.

Sales from warehouses were limited due to donations occurring late in the shea trading season. However, partners reported substantial community benefits. Women collectors who previously worked individually are now registering with

cooperatives in order to gain access to the warehouses. Women have already initiated group activities including village savings and loans associations.

Partners reported that lack of pre-financing available in communities presents a challenge to the warehouse model. Without pre-financing, cooperatives are unable to aggregate kernels in the warehouse.

•39 partner projects•53,913 women beneficiaries•970 registered women’s groups

In September 2015, the GSA launched a public-private partnership with the USAID West Africa Trade Hub and 15 sustainability partners that provides 20 warehouses and trainings for women’s cooperatives.

•6 projects•6,325 women trained in health and safety best practices•714 health and safety kits donated to women collectors

Women collectors and processors face challenges to their health and safety including snakebites and boiling burns. However, the scope and nature of these challenges are poorly defined and few solutions to improve workplace conditions have been introduced.

Partners are focusing pilot projects on reducing snakebites and mitigating health risks associated with exposure to open fires. They introduced new equipment such as torches, boots, anti-venom, improved mud stoves and first aid kits.

Beneficiaries reported utilization of torches for pre-dawn collection has allowed them to avoid snakes on pathways and in fields. Introduction of newly designed mud stoves help to reduce smoke and heat exposure for women processors.

Boiling burns continue to be a health risk for women processors and pilot projects have yet to propose solutions.

•6 projects•39,550 women trained in cooperative development•5,095 women trained in kernel contract management•34,415 women benefitting from increased shea kernel price information

The work stream builds the capacity of women’s groups to establish cooperative structures and manage their warehouses. Activities under this work stream include trainings on cooperative organization and management, shea kernel aggregation, warehouse receipts systems, contract management, and collection of price information.

Partners reported the trainings provide a new framework for women to begin collective work in their communities. The benefits include development of women leaders and organizational skills for the cooperatives.

Challenges reported include illiteracy and innumeracy amongst the participants which limits comprehension of the trainings and ability to implement management structure.

ConseRvAtion pilot pRojeCts

•3 projects•56 fuel-efficient stoves put into use

The work stream includes three suggested activities; community demonstration plots for women’s groups, planting of alternative fuel wood, and research on techniques for efficient shea processing.

Partners reported recycling waste from processing improved conservation of water and produced biogas. The introduction of stoves also led to a 50% reduction in fuel wood use.

Pilot projects were limited and have yet to address alternative fuel wood and community demonstration plots.
