MESSAGE FROM THE HEADMASTER

WELCOME TO TERM 4

I would like to take this opportunity to welcome back our students and parents to Term 4. This is the term in which we assess and report on the outcomes students have attained during the year and undertake a number of activities to celebrate their achievements and success. As our students achieve in so many areas, this makes Term 4 a very busy term. I encourage each student to continue to give their best efforts so that they can develop the gifts and talents that God has given them.

THE HSC COMMENCES ON MONDAY

Please pray for our Year 12 students and their families as they undertake the Higher School Certificate, which commences on Monday. Pray that the students feel the calm that God can provide and that they are able to show the examiners the knowledge they have gained and the outcomes they have achieved as they studied their Senior courses.

Year 12 would like to thank the large number of teachers who generously gave their holiday time to hold study days, workshops, give 1 on 1 help and answer emails to assist the students as they prepared for their HSC.

24 HOUR FIGHT AGAINST CANCER AND GOLD COIN COLLECTION

Like all sectors of our community, many members of Broughton’s family have been impacted by cancer. We have students, staff, parents, grandparents and other family members who have been treated for, or are undergoing treatment for, cancer and other families who have lost loved ones to this disease.

As a show of support for all members of our community who have been touched by cancer, Broughton will again be participating in the 24 hour Fight Against Cancer Walk to be held from Saturday 19 October to Sunday 20 October. The event will be held at Campbelltown Athletics Stadium at Leumeah. We encourage and invite all students and their families in the College to join our team as we walk.

24 hour Fight Against Cancer Walk is a wonderful community event where all money raised stays in the Macarthur region. The event begins at 10am on Saturday and goes through till 10am on Sunday morning. Please consider coming along, even if only for an hour. It would be great to have representatives from the College walking throughout the 24 hour period. We ask that students wear their Broughton Sports uniform. Please bring plenty of water and sunscreen.

Next Tuesday 15 October, the College will be having a gold coin day where we ask all students to donate a gold coin to this worthy cause. This will then be our teams’ contribution, so students participating in the walk are not required to raise individual sponsorship.

A VISIT FROM KARAN

Karan Gaikwad (Year 7) visited the College on Friday 20 September to thank his friends and classmates for their support, love and prayers as he and his family have dealt with his illness. Karan and his friends enjoyed the chance to catch up and chat and his mother and father took the opportunity to talk to Mrs Kennedy, Mrs Russell and other members of staff.

Karan used the visit to give the College a huge thank you card and a piece of his artwork he has been working on to say ‘thank you’ to all in our community.

Please continue to pray for Karan as he faces surgery this week and give thanks for the support he is getting from his

brother, Shree, his parents and many friends and colleagues. Give thanks for the wisdom of Karan’s doctors and medical team as they prepare for and undertake the surgeries this week.

CONGRATUALTIONS TO MR AND MRS ALLARD

Mr and Mrs Allard have given me the privilege of informing the College community that they are expecting their first baby in April 2014. We all congratulate this wonderful couple on this exciting news and will pray that Mrs Allard will keep well during her pregnancy. We also give thanks that this new baby will be born to a family who will share their love of Christ with their child.

STAFF APPOINTMENTS - 2014

I am pleased to announce that I have appointed Mrs Tracy Rixon, Mrs Mary Bines and Miss Collette van Breda to permanent positions in the Junior School commencing at the beginning of the 2014 academic year.

SAD NEWS FROM OUR OSHC

It was with sadness that I have accepted the resignation of Mrs Julie Staples (OSHC Coordinator) as from the end of the 2013 academic year. Mrs Staples has tendered her resignation due to family circumstances. Mrs Staples has played a pivotal role in the establishment of our high quality Out of School Hours Care program and all the children who have participated in the program have loved her cheerful and caring manner. I thank her for the contribution she has made to the College community.

The College has advertised for a new OSHC coordinator and for an OSHC Assistant. Information relating to these positions can be found on the College website. The closing date for applications for these positions is 30 October 2013.

NEITA AWARD FINALISTS

It was exciting to receive notification that Mrs Russell and Mrs Blockley have both reached the finalist stage of the National Excellence in Teaching Awards (NEiTA). These awards recognise excellence in teaching and pastoral care and are the result of nominations from parents in the school community. It is pleasing to see the work of these ladies recognised in this manner.

STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT

Congratulations to Mia Gigliotti (Year 3) on her success at the Arndell Anglican College Interschool Equestrian Competition held on Saturday 21 September. Mia’s expertise and talent as an equestrian was rewarded with three first places, including first in her rider class, a second, a third and a fourth.

Over the long weekend Mia also represented Broughton in the Berry Public School Interschool Championship. Mia placed each day in her events which included the hacking events on Saturday, show jumping on Sunday and the interschool challenge on Monday. Ultimately at the final presentation Mia was awarded the Year 3 Reserve Champion. It was an amazing experience and she is already looking forward to next year.

Well done Mia – we are fortunate to have a rider with your talent in our College.

UNIFORMS

I thank parents for their support and assistance in relation to our Uniform Protocols. The majority of our students show pride in themselves and the College through the manner in which they wear their uniform.

I have asked that staff continue to raise any concerns relating to uniform with students and to refer ongoing concerns to the relevant Head of School. Guidelines relating to the College requirements on uniform can be found in the Student Communication Handbook, pages 18-20 (Senior School) and pages 9-12 (Junior) School). Parents are requested to particularly note guidelines relating to girls socks, jewellery and hair.

SAFETY WITHIN OUR GROUNDS

We thank parents, students and visitors for observing the 10 km per hour speed limit within the College grounds. The safety of our students is a priority of the College community.

I also thank parents for observing our Kiss-and-Drop and Car Park Guidelines to enable the safe and quick dismissal of the students at the end of the day. May I ask that parents do not park on the edge of the oval in the afternoon due to visibility problems and the high level of traffic flow?

BYOD/T AT BAC IS ON THE WAY

In the last few Term 3 newsletters, you would have noticed that there were some small items relating to BYOD/T (Bring Your Own Device/Technology). This program is being introduced in an increasing number of schools and corporate areas across Australia. In education, research has shown that when a student is using their own device, they are engaged at a greater level to the use of technology in their learning. Students prefer to use the device which best suits their own needs, in and out of school, rather than have their ‘school mandated’ and often their ‘preferred’ laptop at home.

Broughton is working towards the introduction of a BYOD/T program in the Senior School, with the aim of fully integrating it by the start of Term 3 2014. Initially it will be simply allowing designated years to bring their own device to undertake simple tasks such as word processing, file access, internet etc. The College will implement a staged transition period and we will give the timeline for this by 1 November 2013. The first year to be given approval to do this will be announced next week after the staff, have been officially informed. Staff, are not expected to radically change their teaching practice at this initial implementation stage.

Obviously such a move will raise a number of questions for parents relating to which device is appropriate and what are some of the protocols involved. I have asked Mr Van der Schyff to have such details placed on the student/staff intranet by Friday 25 October 2013. I would advise parents who may feel pressured by their children to purchase a new device to allow them to use it at school, not to make these purchases at this time as there will be

guidelines on which device can be used, when other devices can be used and when no device can be used. As access is provided by the College network, there is no need for students to access the 3G and 4G networks.

As we move towards the establishment of the BYOD platform I ask parents to email comments and questions to Mr Van der Schyff through byod@broughton.nsw.edu.au.

BRONWYN NICHOLAS – Headmaster’s Personal Assistant

I began my Broughton journey as a Year 7 student in 1990 and graduated Year 12 in 1995. My husband and I were married at St Peter's Anglican Church in 2004. We have two gorgeous boys, Joshua 3 and Lachlan 17 months. We have lived at Mount Annan for the last 3 years and attend St Peter's Anglican Church Campbelltown. Outside of work you will find us at swimming lessons, Soccajoeys, the park or riding bikes. I have only recently joined Broughton but feel very privileged that God has provided me with this wonderful opportunity. It was a pleasant welcome to see the familiar faces of those who were once my teachers.

COLLEGE NEWS

ANNOUNCING - A NEW COLLEGE BUS SERVICE

As the College continues to seek ways to serve our community, we wish to announce the introduction of a new bus service for the Mount Annan and Spring Farm area as from Monday 28 October 2013. The new run will include parts of Welling Drive, Mount Annan Drive, Richardson Road and Spring Road. Final details of the route and planned bus stops will be available as from next Wednesday. Parents who are interested in the details of the route, costs of the service and the college bus protocols are asked to email Mrs Turner (Assistant Registrar) on reception@broghton.nsw.edu.au. Please note, this run is a trial for Term 4 and the College may make changes as the service is evaluated.

Students accessing the present Broughton service will be notified by Monday 21 October of any changes to this service as a result of the introduction of the new run.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Bankstown Buses and their manager, Mr Robert Collins, for the huge support they continue to give us in the provision of our present bus at a good rate and Mr Bob Stephens (Father of Mrs Stephens- Fripp) for his work when we initially set up our first run and for his advice and assistance as we set up this new service.

OSHC STAFF PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT DAYS

The Out of School Hours Care (OSHC) Centre will be open for the Term 4 Staff Professional Development days on Thursday 7 November and Friday 8 November 2013. Operating hours are 7.00 am to 5.30 pm. Fees: $20 per day for one child or $30 per day per family All bookings must be made online. WELCOME TO TERM 4

Welcome back! I hope all students enjoyed their holidays. I would like to give a special welcome to the new families who have joined our school community this term. After being on leave it was awesome to take a look around the school on Tuesday and see the car track. My thanks to Mr Marek and all of the parents who came to help on that working bee last term.

As you know, term 4 is always jammed packed with many exciting activities so please take note of the upcoming events so that you can plan ahead. Remember to keep looking at

the blog as the teachers update it regularly. If you weren’t able to get to the end of term assembly, the slideshow is on the homepage for you to view.

Today of course was Spanish Day and it was great to see the students and staff having so much fun as they danced the Flamenco on this special anniversary. My thanks to Senora Kowalik for her organisation of this day; it is always a highlight on the calendar.

Next week we have our debating team participating at the IPSHA Gala Day to be held at Danebank and there is much excitement in our younger grades at the commencement of our Infants Swimming Scheme! Grades 4 and 5 began their Hot Shots program yesterday and the tennis competition will continue next week. We also have book talks for all grades next Thursday, and our Year 5 Father/Son night on the Friday evening. As mentioned on the front page, the 24 hour Fight Against Cancer Walk is also taking place next weekend (19-20 Oct) and I hope that many families can join our team in this worthwhile cause. Please remember to send in a gold coin on Tuesday.

BANG! Thump, skid! That was the tear shredding sound of a dog being mistreated and tormented by its coldblooded owner. What a cruel way to treat a humble companion. In my opinion, I think dogs should never be

neglected for three compulsory statements, they’re protectors, they’re loyal and always determined. Have you ever imagined a world without dogs? Well I have and imagine how empty and dull it would be. Dogs need affection and love.

Most importantly dogs are a force field around us. However, we don’t even notice that. I finally have, my dog would do anything to protect me, even from something ten times his size. He is my superhero. That’s just one reason why they shouldn’t be neglected.

Secondly, they’re always loyal. They will always stick by you and come to you. Clearly some people think that they are just a stretchy piece of bubble gum stuck to the bottom of their shoe. Sometimes dogs get distracted but you have to remember they’re like kids, they’ll eventually grow up with the right amount of love and care.

Last but not least, they are determined. They have no limits whatsoever. They’ll take any challenge and make it look easy. Did you know dogs were the first to go into space? They are also the first to go searching for bombs and help the police track down criminals. They are loyal to their trainers and are determined to get the important job done to prove their loyalty.

To close in argument I don’t think dogs get recognised as HEROES and don’t get nearly as much credit as they deserve. Dogs should be treated like humans. Put yourself in their shoes or if it is a neglected dog in a cramped up cage.

The proofs of the sport and formal photos can now be viewed in the Junior Office. Orders and payment need to be submitted by Thursday 24 October, Week 3 in Term 4. Orders will be sent off as of that date.

WELCOME TO TERM 4

Welcome back to Term 4, to what is expected to be a very busy term. Students have settled into class very well as preparations begin for the many different events which will take place. It has been encouraging to see the large number of Year 12 students coming into school for final tuition before they commence their Higher School Certificate on Monday. As a community we will continue to pray for our Year 12’s over the coming weeks.

This week Year 11 were involved in a number of study seminars presented by Enhanced Learning Educational Services entitled ‘7 steps to HSC Success’ and ‘The Psychology of Peak Performance’ presented by Human Connections. I thank Mrs Clipsham for her organisation of

these seminars.

Thank you also to Miss Seymour and Miss O’Brien for their organisation of the Drama and Visual Arts evening. It was an excellent night with our congratulations going to the students who performed and to Cameron Watson for managing the sound.

YEAR 12 2014 ASSESSMENT INFORMATION EVENING

The Year 12 2014 Assessment Information Evening will be held on Monday 14 October in the Worship Centre commencing at 7.30pm. All students in Year 11 must attend this evening and be accompanied by a parent. Students are to be in full summer College uniform. Blazers are not required. It is advisable to bring with them a notebook and pen. The purpose of the evening is to provide important information in regard to the Year 12 Assessment Policy, the Higher School Certificate and the calculation of the ATAR. Assessment booklets and dates due calendar will be distributed at the evening and students will be required to sign in, acknowledging receipt of this information. Students cannot pick up information for other students.

2013 HOSPITALITY WORK PLACEMENT STUDENT OF THE YEAR AWARD

From the MWLP letter

“We are pleased to announce Maddison Pascoe from Broughton Anglican College nominated by Crème Della Crème as a finalist for the 2013 ‘Hospitality Work Placement Student of the Year Award”

Over the past 12 months, MWLP have placed over 800 Hospitality students into work placement – 37 students were nominated by their host employers for being outstanding whilst on work placement. From these 37 students being eligible for the award, MWLP staff members identified them as one of a shortlist of ten students (Garrett Sapsed and Maddison Pascoe (below right) from Broughton’s Year 11 Hospitality class were included in these top ten students) and Maddison was then selected as 1 of the 3 finalists by a panel of internal and external stakeholders.

During the holidays the shortlisted top ten students were invited to a celebration luncheon at Ripples, a restaurant on Sydney Wharf, on 2 October in conjunction with HTN – Hospitality Employment Solutions. Garrett, Maddison along with her parents and Mrs Clipsham, enjoyed a delicious lunch on a beautiful day on the edge of Sydney Harbour.

This finalist nomination is an outstanding achievement for Maddison and will lead to many further opportunities as she completes her HSC in the Hospitality industry and beyond.

DRAMA NIGHT AND ART EXHIBITION

This week students in Years 9-11 elective Visual Arts and Drama demonstrated their creative talents at our Drama Night and Art Exhibition. The Art Exhibition showcased the Year 9 and 11 Visual Arts classes portraiture works. Year 10 Visual Arts class presented Creature Concepts and Journals and Year 9 Photography and Digital Media showcased short films. Year 11 Drama performed the play 'Children of the Black Skirt' as well as some selected monologues that they prepared for their recent yearly examination. Year 10 Drama showcased scripted performances from their Comedy unit as well as self-devised performances designed for children. Year 9 Drama presented an original non-realistic performance. The evening was an excellent showcase of the high quality work students have undertaken throughout the year. Congratulations to all students involved.

PREFECT PROFILE

EMMALISA ENGELBRECHT

My name is Emmalisa Engelbrecht. I have been truly blessed with the privilege of being elected as a grade prefect of Years 10-12. It is an honour to have been selected as part of the 2013-14 prefect body and I am looking forward to working with the other prefects to better serve the school and ultimately glorify God.

I have been a part of the Broughton community since Year 3 and I love all the opportunities our school provides. I have been involved in several school musicals, the Senior and Junior School Choir, Peer mediation, RAGE and Bible Study since Year 7.

I am also involved in several external activities including serving in Kids ministry and my church choir on Sundays and being a part of the creative team on a Friday night at Youth. I feel that my active involvement in church life is constantly challenging my growth as a Christian and will therefore enhance my ability to better serve the school.

I am grateful for this opportunity as prefect and I hope that I can fulfill my role to the best of my ability to serve the school, particularly grades 10-12. I would love to encourage school spirit and community and ultimately help leave a legacy of the love of Jesus Christ. I am excited to work with the talented members of our prefect body to see what we are capable of achieving together. I hope that this will leave a positive impact on our school that the next generation of students can pick up and continue.

WRITER OF THE WEEK

This week’s winner is Georgina Garrett from 9English 1 for her Epilogue to the novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, by Harper Lee. Here is the opening of Georgina’s piece:

STUDY SKILLS TIP FOR OCTOBER – PERFECTIONISM

Expectations on students can create a very competitive environment. Students are inundated with information about the significance of academic performance, and the result, in many cases, is that some students develop unhealthy propensities for perfectionism.

Perfectionism may not sound like much of a problem in an academic atmosphere - after all, teachers and parents want students to develop strong work ethics and sound study habits. The problem is, true perfectionism actually tends to lead students away from these healthy developments. When a student becomes upset over a score of 98 out of 100, or can't handle coming in 2nd out of a class of 30, or spend hours on something that should take 10 minutes…..then study and stress levels will often suffer as a result.

Perfectionism to this degree usually results from a fear of failure, rejection or disapproval, or insecurity about meeting a given standard. Students feeling these pressures quickly fall into inefficient work patterns, focusing on proving themselves, rather than on doing individual assignments effectively. So - how can such patterns and thought processes be avoided? Here are a few suggestions for coping with perfectionism.

1. SEPARATE WORK FROM PERSONAL FEELINGS

This is a huge hurdle for many students. The fact is, an evaluation of your work often feels like an evaluation of you personally, and the pressure of making that evaluation positive can lead to perfectionism. Students must learn to treat work evaluation as feedback for their learning, not as a personal reflection on themselves.

2. SET INCREMENTAL GOALS

Many students tend to set unattainable or at least extremely difficult goals. Instead, students should focus on setting goals based on past achievements and efforts. If a student gets an 85 on an exam, the goal for the next one should not be 100 - it should be an 87. If they study for only twenty minutes for a test, next time aim for thirty. Incremental goals are more reasonable, and most long-term improvement occurs gradually.

3. RECOGNISE STRESS

This can be easier said than done, but it's crucial in battling perfectionism. Students need to be aware of the fact when they're stressing over a project (spending extra unnecessary hours, re-writing pages exhaustively, etc.). Learning to recognize stress can help students to re-evaluate work methods and stop and think how much effort is appropriate for that task.

4. EXPLORE EFFICIENT WORK METHODS

Often, newer or easier work methods can assist in efficiency. Students shouldn't get lazy, but should allow certain technologies to make work easier. That might mean downloading Evernote for easy electronic note-taking, or it may mean investing Sharefile as a means of cloud storage and computer organization - whatever the case, perfectionists can often find their workloads lessened by these steps.

5. PUT THINGS IN PERSPECTIVE

It's incredibly important for students to have proper perspective on schoolwork. Being able to stop and think about the worst case scenario can help students to realize that an individual assignment - while important - should not be a source of unnecessary stress or excessive workload.

Ultimately, dealing with perfectionism can be a long and tricky process. But implementing these habits and thought processes can help students to develop a healthier approach to their schoolwork.
