ENROLMENTS FOR 2020 A MESSAGE FROM THE HEADMASTER DANIEL McNEIL, Yr 9 My biggest highlight at New Plymouth Boys’ is making it to the speech finals. I like how the school gives off such a great feel, and you make so many new friends and discover so many special places around the school. It has a way of teaching that is engaging, understandable and overall fun. I have developed a lot of friendships here, but I want to point out how many of my friendships are in different year groups, and you are not confined to your year group as you see with other schools. The subjects here are amazing. One of my personal favourites is Performance Music. NPBHS does take an in-depth look into all the subjects which is why you will most probably enjoy all your subjects. ISAIAH RUPAPERA-FORBES, Yr 9 My first two terms at NPBHS have been a fun and enjoyable time. I have been able to join the 14A rugby team and develop my rugby skills as a young rugby player. What I like about the school is that there is a wide variety of different subjects for me to choose from. I have chosen Ancient Rome, Digital Media and Sports Performance. The different ways of teaching at NPBHS are enjoyable. Some teachers help us by doing one-on-one and you can get to know some of the really kind teachers. It is straightforward to understand the teachers when they are explaining things to the class, so we know what we are doing. The highlights about the school are the new subjects, the new friends I have made, and all the opportunities that are yet to come in my future. What they said... Thank you for considering New Plymouth Boys’ High School for your son’s education in 2020. Since 1882 our school has been leading the way in the education of boys and independent research has shown that boys do better in a boys’ school environment. The findings of this research are found on page 7 of the prospectus. The school offers a wide range of subjects and co-curricular activities. We are continuously reviewing our curriculum to ensure it is engaging and meaningful for boys in the 21st century. As a parent/caregiver you are an important partner in your child’s learning and we will email you weekly reports on your son’s engagement in his classes. Our vision is simple: “Be the Example” and it covers all aspects of school life including (but not limited to) academic achievement, effort, uniform, and how we treat each other. Your son, when he attends NPBHS, will be accountable to “Being the Example”. The comments from our current students below are the real testimony of the Boys’ High environment and what your son can expect at New Plymouth Boys’ High School. I look forward to seeing you in 2020. Thank you for considering New Plymouth Boys’ High School for your son’s education in 2020.

  • MAYNARD FLYNN, Yr 9 NPBHS was a big step up from my last school for me, though I have enjoyed it immensely so far. I prefer the five periods a day system over one set class, as the teachers are experienced and passionate about their subjects, which makes me feel empowered to learn more. I love how integrated technology/devices

are in the classroom. Unsurprisingly, I have gained a massive amount of knowledge.I have learnt a huge amount in the first two terms, particularly in Science. I have also significantly developed

my Maths skills, as Maths is my favourite subject and I feel confident in algebra, linear graphs and other areas. In English, my writing is better and flows/reads more easily, and I have improved on my descriptive work. I also have

enjoyed and got a lot out of Economics and Geography.I have made a range of new friendships and have met new and interesting people. One of the highlights of these two terms was doing option subjects choices like Electronics, Digital Media, and Art, which I wouldn’t have otherwise experienced. I am looking forward to next semester’s subjects as I love taking on board new views and concepts and learning more information. Overall, I would rate my first two terms at NPBHS very highly.

FERGUS YOUNG, Yr 9 These first two terms have been a real eye-opener for me, and I’ve loved every minute of it. Some of my highlights of these first two terms have been playing at an exchange in Hamilton for the U15 football team, making new friendships, and believe it or not…. Speeches. The compulsory subjects, Science,

Maths, English, PE and Social Science have been perfect for me. Also, my option subjects have been a load of fun, learning, and new experiences. Sports Performance was one of my chosen subjects and I’ve

loved the hard-working, talented environment. Some other subjects I chose were Digital Media and Art. Fitting in here has been such an easy, fun journey, and already I feel completely one of the 1300 kids here at NPBHS. I love this school because of the many great opportunities here.

JOSHUA PENNINGTON, Yr 9 My first two terms at NPBHS have been a blast, the opportunity to do things you haven’t done before keep coming. My favourite subjects so far have been Electronics and Performance Music. Learning to solder components for electronics and playing music have been highlights. Another memorable moment

would be doing the full school haka on the gully terraces; the atmosphere is amazing.

JAKE SHERMAN, Yr 9 I arrived for my first day at Boys’ High and felt like any normal person would - nervous. It was a huge school, I didn’t know my way around at all, and I barely had any friends. But that all changed. Boys’ High has so many opportunities, so many great people and so many great teachers.

The sports program is one of the best, keeping us boys fit and keen on learning. But it is not all about PE. Every Thursday; students do a thing called SCP (Sports and Cultural Practice). This is when each student

gets to choose what they do for the afternoon. There is a massive range of activities, ranging from mountain-biking to music or even playing the sport that you do for the school, to get the extra practice.

I was afraid that I wouldn’t make any new friends; oh, how I was completely wrong. Boys’ High is filled with some of the most enthusiastic, fun and vibrant people who I would have ever met. There are people who are kind and caring and some, I would hope, would be lifelong friends. Some of the older boys, such as the year 12s and 13s are also very helpful. We are all like brothers. If you ever need help, ask. Everyone is looking out for one another. If you want a school where you are going to get an excellent education and be surrounded by amazing people, then Boys’ High is the school for you.

  • We will do everything possible to ensure that your son is treated with respect and given all the encouragement and care needed to see him develop into a young man we can all be proud of.
