Welcome, New Members!

C ongratulations to the following new Rotarians who have joined our ranks in re-cent months. When you attend your meetings ormake up at a club, be sure to extend a special greet-ing to new club members.

Please make sure your club secretary sends thenames and addresses of all new club members to DickFreund, District Secretary, using the Membership DataForm.

Alexandria Hosts Russian Visitors

The Rotary Club of Alexandria, Virginia hosted 5 Russian Rotary International members at their monthly luncheon on February 12th. TheRussian Rotarians were attending the 6th International Conference,

Cold War Healing, sponsored by Rotary International Districts. The confer-ence was February 7th-10th in Washington, D.C. and was held to affirm Rotary’scommitment to improving Russian Health through an Alliance with RotaryInternational.

The program is similar in spirit to the Rotary PolioPlus Program. As inPolioPlus, financial support comes from both within Rotary (individual Ro-tary clubs and Rotary Foundation) and from outside sources (public and pri-vate). It engages Rotarians in Russian communities and Rotary clubs in theU.S., Canada, Australia, the United Kingdom and Western Europe.

The program will focus on major, serious diseases and on opportunitiesfor prevention of life-threatening and life shortening diseases. It will encour-age coalitions and partnerships nationally and internationally in order to en-hance the effectiveness of efforts. It will also be designed to be a sustainable,long-term and cost effective program.

The visiting Rotarians from Russia featured hereare Alexander Chertson, Victor Nekrasov, MikhailAleshnikov and Dr. Oleg Startsev.

This new and creative form ofcollaboration will mean participationfor individual Rotarians, clubs anddistricts, as well as citizens at large,to address the continuing humandevastation resulting from the endof the Cold War.

Congratulations to the Rotary Clubs of Alexandria andMcLean, each of whom are the latest clubs to havetheir $1000 Community Assistance Program (CAP)

requests approved by the Rotary Foundation. The Alexandriaproject, the “Guest Readers Program” at Jefferson Houston El-ementary School in Alexandria, provides the school library withadditional books to supplement their meager library. Thesebooks plus the Rotarians that read to the children continue tostimulate the kids in this disadvantaged neighborhood.

The McLean Rotary Club’s approved CAP grant is for theirhands-on program to provide park benches, site clearance, gen-eral maintenance and plantings to improve the park for the lessfortunate residents. This promises to be well-covered by thepress as a major community event.

The good news was that we had the opportunity to use upto $10,000 of District Designated Funds that were returned tothe District for CAP use from donations made by DistrictRotarians in the 1998-99 Rotary year.

The bad news is that despite announcement of this pro-gram to each club ver-bally, by email, and by ar-ticles in the ROTARIANand on the RI website, only four valid requestsfor approval were submit-ted … a truly missed op-portunity to do good insix more communities.

New RI Pilot MembershipTracking Program

Some clubs are receiving membership referrals from Judith and TomTarbox. Here’s why! Increased use of the Rotary web site(www.Rotary.com) lead RI to form a pilot program (MTPP) to help

relocating Rotarians find new clubs. In addition, the web site gives the gen-eral public information about Rotary and the opportunity to inquire aboutmembership. District 7610 created a system to mirror the RI program for thecurrent fiscal year.

Here’s how it works ... RI referrals are sent from RI to the District 7610Membership Tracking Team (DMTT) co-chaired by Judith & Tom. All re-ferrals are personally contacted and welcomed.

After personal contact with Rotarians, the DMTT helps the Rotarianselect a club(s) where interests match. Convenience and proximity to homeor office are also considered. Once these factors are determined, severalclubs that match the Rotarian’s criteria are suggested and club presidents arenotified. Likewise, these procedures are followed for non-Rotarians. Afterthe prospect selects a club to join that club’s membership application proce-dure is used.

The MTPP program aims to facilitate the transfer of Rotarians from onedistrict to another and to serve as an information and recruiting tool for allRotary clubs.  The program extends courtesy, friendliness and fellowship. Conversations are being held with a number of super new member prospects. Some of these prospects have joined clubs while others are busy visiting clubs. These prospects include seasoned Rotarians and young professionals. Allnew inductees will offer their new club experience and a fusion of new vital-ity that all of our clubs seek.

The DMTT is an arm of the District Membership and Retention TaskForce. When referrals are forwarded to your club follow up immediately andwelcome the referral to your club and to your community. Please notify theDMTT of the results of your contact. All referrals are sent to club presidents.
