District NewsThanks to our Veterans and School CommunityAs I visited our schools on Veteran’s Day, I was so impressed by the number of veterans who chose to spend their morning with our staff and students. Our veterans were treated to music, videos, breakfasts, tributes, cheers, and genuine appreciation. It is rewarding for me to see our students listening to stories shared by veterans and learning the true meaning of sacrifice and freedom.

More veteran tributes are planned. Our DECA students have been working diligently to organize Remembrance at the Meadows this Saturday, November 14. Details are on our website (www.milfordschools.org).

On Thursday, November 19, our Board of Education will be awarding a diploma to a veteran who did not graduate from high school because of his service to our country. The meeting will be held at Meadowview Elementary beginning at 7 p.m. The Board will also be honoring veterans at the meeting, and I invite our veterans to join us for this brief program. At this meeting, students from each of our buildings will be presenting donations to Troop Box Ministries which helps fund this ministry to supply care packages for active military, many our own Milford graduates.

As we share our appreciation to our veterans, I want to express my appreciation to the Milford School Community. As we approach the Thanksgiving holiday, I am amazed by the spirit and generosity of our school community. From our art students creating bowls for a fundraiser for a local food pantry to our National Honor students holding a 5K to raise money for the cancer society, this community cares for each other. And for that, I am grateful.

Sincerely,Dr. Robert FarrellSuperintendent

District to Host Community Forum on December 2Milford School District is hosting a community forum on Wednesday, December 2, to share information and gather feedback on current issues facing our school district. The meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m. in the Milford High School cafeteria, and will allow time for small group discussion, sharing feedback, and developing action steps.

“Ohio’s public schools have seen a significant increase in state mandates and challenges to maintain local control, all while state funding is being reduced throughout the state. Legislators continue to change the rules and create challenges that threaten Ohio’s public schools. We need to make our parents aware of these issues and show them how they can make a difference,” said Milford Superintendent, Dr. Robert Farrell.

According to Dr. Farrell, the following topics will be discussed at the forum:-Local control of our schools-Unfunded mandates-Private charter schools receiving local tax dollars

Dr. Farrell added, “Parent engagement is critical to this grass roots’ advocacy movement. We know that when parents become informed and challenge the state on what is best for our children, real changes can happen. Parents fought back against excessive state testing, which resulted in Ohio firing the testing company and reducing the amount of testing required for students.”

Please consider sharing your time and thoughts on these important issues. If you have any questions about the forum, call the Board of Education office at (513) 831-1314.
