Over 150 adults and children attended the Merrriwa Carols in the Park arranged by the combined Christian Churches of Merriwa under a pleasant summers evening and a light shower that cooled the temperature. People started to arrive for the carols early and enjoyed the evening. On sale were sausage sandwichs and soft drinks.
A highlight of the evening was the arrival of Santa courtesy of Merriwa’s RFS truck. Santa participated in the proceedings explaining the role and origins of Saint Nicholas, now known as Santa Clause. Of course after the carols he distributed his bag of goodies to the children and had many photos taken with the children. Our very talented Master of Ceremonies, Sally Hagley encouraged the responding crowd to participate with her lively antidotes.
Sally interviewed Teletha Sawley, a coordinator of the newly formed Merrriwa Create and Grow Play Group who explained the role and aims of the group. All proceeds from the sausage sizzle stall go to this group to enable them to purchase items needed for the running of the group.
Music was supplied by Andrew Luke on saxophone and Ron Campbell on the Hammond organ.
The Merriwa Central School choir under the leadership of Miss Samantha Holden sang six carols accompanied by Santa and was the highlight of the evening. Amplification sound was provided by Mr Jake Macintyre and as usual by the quality of his equipment added to the sound production.
I would like to thank all who helped with the setting up of the stall, arranging of seating and for the carrying of the Hammond organ onto site. This is the great commmunity spirit that prevails in Merriwa
Carols in the Park
and makes this event a great success.
Thank you all for your participation.

SUPER SWIMMERS
The 2016 intensive swimming program is now complete with final assessments having taken place on Monday. Instructors and teachers alike have been truly amazed at the improvements of many of the children. Thanks to Mrs Higgins who has spent many hours organising the program to ensure its success. We would also like to thank all of the instructors for being prepared to work so enthusiastically with the children every day for two weeks.

YEAR 6 DINNER AND DISCO
Last Thursday night, our departing Year 6 students enjoyed a special dinner at the RSL, a celebration cake, thanks to the P and C, and a disco, which was wonderfully organised by the SRC. Thanks to the staff who attended, and to our Year 6 students, for their pride and manners in sharing the night with us all.
STAFF FAREWELLS
Mrs Rokobaro and Mrs Crooks have been an important part of the primary team in 2016, and we are all sad to see them leave us. Many thanks to both of you for your professionalism, your knowledge and your ability to educate our children to achieve their very best. Mrs Rokobaro is hoping to teach in Adelaide or Sydney next year, whilst Mrs Crooks will be returning to Muswellbrook South Public School.
CAROLS IN THE PARK
Miss Holden and our combined primary and secondary choir were invited to perform at last Sunday’s special community event. What an excellent group of girls and boys we had to represent our school. Well done everyone, and thank you for making your teachers and families very proud.
PLAYGROUND COLOUR
Our undercover area (COLA) has been filled with colour, thanks to a fantastic donation from the Merriwa Men’s Shed. Last weekend, Lex from “Art by LJ” used his talents to fill the cement with games, including Snakes and Ladders, Twister, Hopscotch and many other weird and wonderful designs. Everyone is lining up to play the games, including teachers. Thanks so much to the Men’s Shed, Lex and Mrs Crooks for her coordination of the project.

theoretical work earlier in the term and have been enjoying a range of physical activities in the warmer weather.
Mr Grant and his Year 7 class were learning about reproductive health education in the first few weeks of the term. They have been participating in Softball and Cricket lessons.
Miss Rogers with Year 8 completed lessons concerning drug education – specifically alcohol. They produced creative and colourful health promotion posters summarising their knowledge about short and long term effects of alcohol. They also learnt about the legal, cultural and social elements of alcohol consumption.
Year 9 spent their earlier term time learning about adolescent sexual health. We discussed sexual orientations and investigated diversity in the community. We researched some other issues linked to contraception, and quality relationships focusing upon the social and emotional influences on sexual relationships. In recent lessons, the class showed good attacking play in Walla rugby activities as well as participating in a few lessons of Cricket. If you ask Ben Nebauer – he might tell you about the half century he scored against the bowling of a number of his class-mates, last week. Nicholas Thorburn showed good skill in wicket-keeping, too.
Year 10 finished their theoretical learning about “Do You Party Right?” in which they accessed the school laptops to research some key issues concerning sexual health and drug education. They studied a number of social, cultural, legal and emotional issues concerning the decisions that teenagers make when partying with their peers. We finished their practical lessons participating in a mix of physical activities in basketball, cricket and dance. It was really pleasing to see some highly skilful sections of play and a good sense of fun in our final classes.

Secondary ReportGOODBYE FROM MRS ROKOBARO
I would like to thank the 25 students in my Year 4/5 class at MCS. Each student contributed to a positive and productive year of learning. I am sincere in stating that they are one of the best groups I have worked with in my 40 year career in education! As I return to my home in Adelaide I will take special memories of these students. Thank you to those who supported me in my teaching at MCS.
Merry Christmas and happy holidays from Merridy Jamieson-Rokobaro.
YEAR 6 THANKS
“We would like to say a huge thank you to all of the teachers in the primary campus for helping us to grow and develop our young minds. They have been our friends as well as our teachers and we will always remember their care. We have learnt about giving our best and learning from our mistakes. We have made awesome friends during primary who will stick with us as we go through the years at secondary school.” – Year 6, 2016

PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT, HEALTH AND PHYSICAL

With the holidays fast approaching, it is timely to reflect upon the work completed throughout the last term in Personal Development, Health and Physical Education. (P.D.H.P.E.) Years 7 to 10 finished the bulk of their

learning about Sports Medicine. If you ask Breanna, Cara or Austin – they will be able to diagnose, treat and manage any sprain, bruise, graze that you suffer. They could deal with fractures or dislocations as well – but we would not want to offend the local ambulance members! The students have been studying hard about preventative actions and rehabilitation for their first assessment task. And they are well into their Core 1 studies as the holidays approach.John Cronin sat his HSC examination and by all accounts prepared very well and felt confident about his paper. He is now looking forward to receiving his final results in a few days and reaping the rewards of his dedicated study.
This concludes my final PDHPE report for the Merriwa Ringer as next year, I will start a new chapter of my teaching career at a Sydney high school. I would like to express my gratitude to all the Executive, Teaching and SASS staff at Merriwa Central School. The last six years as a PDHPE and (this year) Mathematics teacher have been very satisfying and fulfilling. It has been a pleasure teaching and observing your children develop their knowledge and skills through all different elements of their personal development, health and physical education. In addition, watching our swimmers and athletes represent our school with wonderful sportsmanship and skill has been a blessing as well.
by Codi Marsh and Nikki Anshaw
Finally, I would like to wish all the students and their families a happy Christmas and a safe, peaceful New Year.

There were five teams in the Open Girls Division, Merriwa played each team once. Finishing the day with a nail bitter against Guyra, unfortunately the girls couldn’t quite score enough runs. Other results from the day included wins against both Trundle and Boorowa and a loss to Gulargambone. The girls showed excellent sportsmanship throughout the day and should be very proud of their achievements. Congratulations girls!
Thank you to Gaynor Blackadder, Brian Cornish and Fiona Cornish for driving us out to Dubbo and supporting and encouraging the girls for the day.

St Joseph’s Primary School
The staff and students would like to wish all our faithful readers a happy and holy Christmas. We hope you have time in the festive season to open your hearts in love to your family and friends and remember those who do not have somewhere to belong and someone to love.
Thank you to all the community members who have supported our great school during 2016. It does take a community to educate a child and I am so grateful to be a part of the Merriwa community.
We wish a fond farewell to our Year 6 graduates. We wish each a happy and fulfilling future where they live meaningful lives which adds value to this great world we all share. Don’t forget we are “Life-long learners, with optimism and hope for the future”.
Our Year 6 students have reflected on their time at St Joseph’s:
Jorji Taaffe: I became a part of the St Joey’s family in Kinder in 2009. I believe this school has given me a quality primary education. In addition to the academic side of school, I have thoroughly enjoyed the school plays, excursions and my role as a Year 6 leader. Even though I am excited to start high
Rebecca Keegan: I began my time at St Joseph’s in Year 1 and have loved every minute since. I have made many friends and the teachers are great. I have especially enjoyed my role as a leader. It has been an honour working with Mrs Whale and thank you for a wonderful primary school experience.
Dylan Turner: I came to St Joseph’s in Year 3 and have really liked the way we learn about new things at our school. The teachers are good and the kids are friendly. I will miss St Joey’s.
school, I think I will miss my friends and the friendly faces of the St Joseph’s school community.
Patrick Magner: I started at St Joseph’s in Year 3 and I have loved it since. The school community is great and the teachers are the best.
Chloe Towell: I have been at St Joseph’s since K i n d e r g a r t e n . I have really enjoyed my time at this school because I have made some amazing friends and I’ve been taught by incredible teachers. One of the main highlights of my time at our school has been getting my leader’s badge and taking on my leadership role in the school. Thank you to everyone who has helped me throughout my primary education, it has been great.
Merriwa Ringer Page 7
Nick Morgan: I started at St Joey’s in Year 2. Since attending this school, my grades and my self-confidence have greatly improved. I have made some good mates. I have really enjoyed being a Year 6 leader and a role model for my Kinder buddy, Chad. Thank you for the great memories St Joseph’s.
Charles Brazier: I have been at Joeys since Kinder. I like our school because everyone is respectful and the teachers are cool.
Tia Magner: I came to St Joseph’s in Year 3 and have made many friends. The teachers and Mrs Whale are the best, especially my teacher, Miss Foran. This year I have learned how to be a great leader and have been proud to represent my school in the community. Next year I am going to really miss our school, my friends and the kind people in the Joey’s community.
Jacob Bridges: I haven’t been at this school for long, but to me, this is the best school ever. People at St Joseph’s are so friendly and this made being the new student earlier this year a lot easier. The teachers at this school inspire you to give of your best and are very understanding. I will miss the support I have received at our school, and the friendly faces.
Thank you for welcoming me into the school community and making Year 6 a great year.
In Science and Technology, the Infants class has been fascinated by the vital role water plays on our planet. We have investigated where water comes from, its journey from the clouds to the tap, how it shapes the landscape and how we use water. We have discussed ways to conserve water and studied how technology assists us in monitoring water use. How many occupations use water? Farmers, hairdressers, café attendants, doctors, miners, mechanics and teachers to list a few. We were delighted to welcome Mr Andrew Luke to our classroom to talk about his work in the Rural Fire Service and how water is a fundamental resource in fire control. It was so exciting to watch such a dynamic discussion take place in our classroom. Our students asked insightful and curious questions, based on scientific concepts. They were so interested in the topic and demonstrated perfect “interview etiquette”. A sincere thank you to Mr Luke, our students learnt a great deal about the use of water in your valuable work in our community.

Friday January 27 for staff
Monday January 30 for Years 1 – 6
Tuesday January 31 for Kindergarten.
CLASSES
As we have had no change to our staffing allocation, we will once again run the same class structure as this year. The only change will be that year 3 will be with Mrs Parker. Some year 3 students will join Mrs Darlington for the literacy session only. The parents of these students have already been consulted.
SWIMMING LESSONS
We will start our year out with swimming lessons at the Caravan Park. Permission notes will be sent home on the first day back. There will be no cost for these lessons. All lessons will be conducted by Dimity Parker, with classroom teachers travelling to and from the pool with their class and providing supervision at the pool. The dates for swimming are: Wednesday 1st February, Friday 3rd February, Monday 6th February, Tuesday 7th February and Wednesday 8th February.
SWIMMING CARNIVAL
Due to an unexpected change to pool bookings, our swimming carnival will be held in Scone on Thursday February 2. All children who turn eight by the end of 2017 will be expected to attend. BEACH AWARENESS PROGRAM
What a way to end the term! Everyone had a fantastic time at One Mile Beach last Friday. The day started with wetsuits being fitted, sun screen slathered on, before surfboards were collected and carried down to the beach. Students participated in some beach safety activities before being taught the basics of surfing. Then it was time to hit the water. We had a great little spot. The students could go out about 25 metres with the water being only waist deep. With the help of instructors, teachers and parents, many of the students were able to ride the waves. Some students were even able to stand on their boards as the waves brought them in. We returned home at the end of the day with many tired children (and adults).
Thank you to Port Stephens Surf School and their instructors. They did a wonderful job giving the children the freedom to have a go while guiding them through the basics. Thank you to Renee Roper, Amanda McLean, Katie McLean and Andrew Johnson for coming along and assisting with supervision. Thank you also to the accompanying staff.
A huge thank you goes to the P and C who made the excursion possible by fully funding the lessons and the bus. I know I speak on behalf of all students when I say it was a valuable learning experience, leading up to the Christmas holidays.
Students are very keen to have another go next year!

Cassilis PublicSchool
CASSILIS PUBLIC SCHOOL
Sophie took a more focused and determined approach in the classroom and completed all tasks to a higher standard. When she was reading to Mrs Burgess, she showed excellent fluency and expression and an improved ability to answer comprehension questions with more detail. In swimming, Sophie was consistently trying her best over the nine swimming days. She is a confident swimmer who really benefited from the lessons by listening and accepting advice from her instructors. Sophie should be very proud of how hard she worked and how well she encouraged others in the pool.
The reasons her peers voted for Sophie included;
‘Sophie, because she has used her manners all week’, ‘Sophie, for trying her best at swimming’, Sophie, because she was good at swimming the 50 metres freestyle’, ‘Sophie, for being respectful when Des drive us to swimming’, and ‘Sophie, because she is responsible and remembers to bring in her library books’.
TOBIAS’S TRANSITION DAY TO MENDOORAN
On Wednesday December 7, I had my Transition day for High School in Mendooran. I caught two buses to Mendooran; one from Coolah where I live, then another bus from Neilrex. It was a long 1 and a half hour bus trip all up and when I got to Mendooran School it was a big mob of people scattered around the whole school.
As soon as I got through the gates there were five or six people that called out for Cameron and asked if I was his little brother, which made me feel happy that some people knew me from Cameron telling them that I was coming.
When the first period bell went I didn’t know where to go but then I finally found where I was supposed to go which was English. When the second period bell went we had to go to the science lesson room where we had science.
Then the recess bell went and after recess we had maths, PDHPE which is just PE then we had lunch. Food Tech and Art with Mrs Norris was in the afternoon. Then we went home.
A VERY SUCCESSFUL SWIM SCHOOL
Congratulations to the students who attended the full nine days of swimming. The staff were very impressed with how hard the students worked and how well they listened to the lessons. All students made improvements!
Thanks to the instructors: Mrs Nairne, Mrs Cornish, Miss Storrier, Miss Hodgson, Mrs Hunt, Miss Courtney Auld and Mrs Burgess.
Thank you to the Royal Hotel Cassilis for the hire of their bus, to the Anderson family who loaned us their bus for a couple of days and to Jason at the pool for helping to watch over our swimmers. A huge thank you to Des Turnbull who drove the students to and from the pool (and waited for them to swim and have lunch afterwards) every day. We couldn’t have done swimming without your help!
Last Thursday and Friday, the instructors tested the students. Those students received a certificate last Friday indicating which areas of swimming they passed and which areas they are still learning.
Thanks Jason (lifeguard at the pool) for giving our students a small bag of lollies on Friday for their good behaviour.

REFLECTIONS - FOURTH SUNDAY OF ADVENT - Matthew 1:18-24
The birth of Jesus in luke’s Gospel focuses on Mary; in Matthew’s Gospel the focus is on Joseph. It is through Joseph that Jesus comes into the House of David. It is Joseph who receives an annunciation that the child has been conceived through the power of the Holy Spirit. In Israel’s past history there was a Joseph who had dreams, who looked after his family, and even went down into Egypt, which is where Joseph will later take Mary and Jesus. Here again we have Matthew shaping the birth narrative to bring out the connection between the story of Jesus and the story of Israel. The quotation from Isaiah makes this even more explicit – Jesus is Emmanuel, God-with-us, and he is the one to fulfil Israel’s longings.
Jesus begins his life as do many children, in the midst of anxiety hope and much that is unknown. The future lies hidden from Joseph as the future of any child lies hidden from its parents. Joseph trusts this future into God’s hands. Perhaps this is the image we adults need at Christmas. When we look at the crib scenes of the child resting peacefully in a manger, or in the arms of Mary, dare we believe that even as adults we can rest as peacefully in the arms of God? Adult and child are one in this divine birth of Emmanuel, God-with-us.
May the Spirit of God bring life and peace to our homes this Christmas.
Blessings to all of you, and our wishes for a happy and hold Christmas.

Merry Xmas and Happy New Year from Dr Jawaad, Carol, Rebecca, Stephanie, Taylah, Moya and Desly.
It has been a very busy year for all of us and especially all the staff of Hunter Medical Practice, at Merriwa and Denman.
It has been a very sad end of year as we have lost some beautiful people in our community.
I want to pass on my sincere condolences to all the families who have lost their loved ones. I also want to show my support and offer any help I can in any way.
I must say Merriwa is a great town and I have seen such a lovely and strong attitude from the whole community for the families who are grieving.
I would like to thank the whole community for your support and in spite of all this sadness, I would like to wish you a safe and Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

enjoyable match with some good efforts against tough competition.
Aberdeen won the toss and chose to bat, getting off to a steady start in the first 10 overs. Three quick wickets between Charlie and Seth raised our spirits and it was a good balance of attack from both teams after that with plenty of runs scored, interspersed with wickets from most of our bowlers. Aberdeen finished their 40 overs at 7/203.
With Doug and Murray both late withdrawals, Seth stepped into the opening position with James but will be keen to return to his favoured mid order after a very short visit to the crease. Charlie joined James and together they put on 65 before James fell to a catch. Charlie impressed with nine boundaries plus a few singles for his 42 and Will, despite obvious discomfort, staunchly saw out the rest of our batters before succumbing to a caught and bowled while on 46 to end our innings. All out in the 31st over for 140.
Batting: J Armstrong 19, S Morgan 0, C Stokes 42, W Gell 46, M Fieldsend 4, J Taylor 6, J Osmond 3, H Hood 0, M Curteis 0, J Parker 0, J Woodward 1-no, Sundries 19.
Bowling: W Gell 1/34 (8), C Stokes 2/29 (8), S Morgan 1/38 (8), H Hood 2/48 (8), J Taylor 0/24 (3), J Armstrong 1/27 (5). (Sundries 17).
Players Player - Charlie Stokes for a valuable contribution all round.
Encouragement Award - Mick Curteis for his endless efforts in the field.

It was not Merriwa’s day last Saturday as our run of wins came to an end against Aberdeen 1. Still it was a competitive and
Merriwa Ringer Page 25
The weekend of October 29 and 30 Merriwa holding the Zone 7 Pony Club hold it’s annual Jamboree – the culmination of a year’s competitions. Each of the seven clubs in the zone take their turn at holding this prestigious two day event and this year it was hosted by Scone. Merriwa Pony Club was represented by 20 riders. Saturday’s program consisted of hack and rider events along with a utility class and showjumping. The Merriwa riders performed extremely well throughout the day with many wins and places along with Champions and Reserve Champions – including both Champion and Reserve Champion Junior Boy Rider with Jack Mobberly and Ben Patterson.
The Team of Four Riders competition is considered the pre-eminent event of the day. Teams compete in two age divisions; under 13 years and 13 and under 25 years, with a perpetual trophy being presented to the winners of each. The event is judged by two judges based upon a pointscore criteria of riding ability, gear and overall presentation. Merriwa Pony Club was excited to win the Under 13 years Team of Four Riders for the second year in a row. The team consisted of Nicole Martin and Emily Ninness, both members of last year’s winning team, along with Jorji Taaffe and Nick Morgan. The younger team of Roy Lawler, Darcy Taaffe, Ben Patterson and Georgia Maben performed excellently to be awarded third. This team will be a force to be reckoned with next year. Our over 13 years team of Anastasia Martin, April Lawler, Cameron Ninness and Clancy Martin also rode well in a very close competition to also be awarded third.
The second day of competition is devoted to speed and agility with the sporting events. Six events are run in preliminary rounds with three of these proceeding to finals. The finals are another highlight of the weekend. Almost all of the Merriwa members made it through to the finals – a testimony to the quality of sporting instruction, most notably from Pauline Lawler, that these kids receive at our monthly rally days.
The mounted presentation at the end of Sunday revealed the extent to which the Merriwa Pony Club members had excelled for the weekend. Age group results were as follows: Under 7 years girl Champion Kirra Green, Reserve Champion . Georgia Maben 7-9 years boy Champion Ben Patterson. 9-11 years girl Reserve Champion Makayla Mobberly. 9-11 years boy Champion Jack Mobberly, Reserve Champion Roy Lawler. 11-13 years girl Champion Emily Ninness, Reserve Champion Nicole Martin. 11-13 years boy Reserve
Champion Nick Morgan. 15-17 years girl Reserve Champion April Lawler. 15-17 years boy Reserve Champion Cameron Ninness. 17-25 years girl Champion Anastasia Martin.
The real excitement was then to come with the announcement of the overall pointscore trophies. Merriwa Pony Club won the trophy for the club highest pointscore for the weekend and also the trophy for the highest average pointscore for the weekend; this is calculated by taking the total club points scored and then dividing it by the number of riders the club had competing – this highlighted the fact that all the club members were successful for the weekend.
The final award for the weekend is the President’s Cup – an annual pointscore competition from all nominated events held over the year. The Denman club has won this trophy for many years but this year we were VERY excited for it to be awarded to Merriwa.
Congratulations to all members of the Merriwa Pony Club (children and parents) who attended Jamboree and helped to make it such a wonderful weekend.

It was the grit and guts of 15 Merriwa athletes that gave us all goose bumps over the weekend.
Of our 13 kids eligible to qualify this year an astounding NINE athletes have made it through to Regionals to represent the Hunter next February. Our highest team achievement to date.
First on the track was our youngest competitor Georgia Maben who powered home in the pack start for a bronze medal, followed by a hard fought fourth in the 70m, silver in shotput and to cap off her brilliant weekend, a stunning gold in the 200m.
Annabelle Hunt ran a gallant race in the under 7 70m before being sidelined for the rest of the meet due to injury, but her effervescence around the camp was infectious!
William Luke ran the race of his life in the under 8 700m to place fourth and followed that up with a sixth in the 70m and 200m and fifth in discus.
Fellow under 8 Ben Patterson showed great maturity, focusing his energy this year on the task at hand – to run his own race to the best of his ability, and run he did coming home with an amazing second in the 70m, third in discus and hurdles and long jump.
Grace Booth stepped up in her favourite events, the under 9 throws to come second in shot and third in discus, making new friends (as she does!) at every event.
Aiden Hunt made his Zone team debut with a fiercely run seventh in the 70m and 200m and got three clear jumps in long jump, great job Aiden.
For the older kids, the nerves kicked in early as did their determination to make the Regionals team. Our oldest athlete, Ben Keane showed great form in the distance events against a record breaking field to claim third in the 800m, 1500m, high jump while younger brother Jackson, a star on the field, claimed gold in shot, second in discus and third in javelin.
Dylan Keane, the family’s sprinter, came home hard in the 100m and 200m to place second and fourth in the 400m.
In his first Zone carnival, Thomas Hunt let the nerves get the better of him in his first event, high jump before clearing his head and having a red hot go in the 200m to place third but his event of the day was long jump, where he leaped into Regionals in a very satisfying and well deserved second place.
Merriwa Little Athletics Club Brothers Korey and Braeden Halse enjoyed a great day of competition with Braeden coming third in his heat for the hurdles, fifth in the 100m and sixth in the tough 400m and jumping clear in the long jump. Korey also delivered with a gutsy fourth in the hurdles, sixth in 400m, seventh in 100m and jumped clear in the long.
After missing out on Regionals by a whisker last year, Cody Bates brought his A game on the weekend placing fifth in the hurdles, second in his heat of the 100m and fifth in the final, a clear round in long jump…but it was his very last event, the 400m that had us all hollering like crazy. While his confidence was low, his desire was through the roof and with the entire Merriwa team cheering him on, Cody lifted from seventh place at the bend to fly home third, securing his place on the team. Marvellous effort Cody and we are delighted to have you on the Regional team.
Sisters Jorji and Darcy Taaffe enjoyed a great meet, with Jorji claiming silver in the hurdles and triple jump and third in long jump making it her best Zone performance to date, while Darcy played to her strengths, placing third in hurdles, second in 70m and belting it home in the 400m and 800m to take out the duo in fine style making it a clean sweep, of four out of four events for Regionals.
Special thanks to the parents that made the huge effort to travel to Zones and helped with triple jump and to our kids who got up for every race, for every Merriwa team mate to cheer them on to the finish line and clapped home anyone from any club struggling to make it to the end. Merriwa club made it’s presence felt at Zones for all the right reasons.
We gave training a miss this week as there were so many events on we struggled to find a date to suit, so that’s it from me for 2016 but I can’t wait to see you all down on the track in Term 1.
