PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Today marks the end of thirteen years of schooling for our Year 12 students. For many they will be the first in their family to receive a Higher School Certificate. We look forward to celebrating their achievement tonight with friends and family at the Year 12 Farewell Dinner. Class of ’81 reunion Next weekend a group of Merriwa Central School students will get together 30 years after leaving school. The Yr10 class of 1981 reunion will be held over the long weekend. I’m sure many friends will be united, and tall tales told on the evening. I have reproduced their class photograph from 1981 in the weeks Ringer (I’m sure they haven’t changed a bit!). NAPLAN Reports The national literacy and numeracy results have been released for students in Yr3,5,7 &9. I am very pleased to see improvement in our results over the past twelve months and congratulate the hard work of students and staff. However I do remind parents that these tests reflect a “snapshot” of how individual students performed on a particular day. They are just one of the assessment tools used by staff to monitor student progress. Individual results have been sent home with students this week. If you would like to discuss the results please don’t hesitate to contact your child’s teacher to make an appointment. Young Endeavour

Last week I had the pleasure to attend the Young Endeavour nomination evening held at the Scone Golf Club. It was great to see so many of our students nominated as young ambassadors by community groups around town. Congratulations to Michael Gilbey and Zoi Russell on gaining a berth for this year’s Young Endeavour voyage in November. Trade Training Centre Construction is now complete on our new Trade Training Centre on the secondary campus. The new facility worth $2.1m has a commercial kitchen, design room and metals workshop. Classes will commence in the new building next term. Once the existing demountables have been decommissioned they will be removed from the site. The staff and students are very excited about moving into these fantastic new facilities. I wish all staff, students and parents a happy and restful holiday. I look forward to your safe return in Term 4.

presented with their awards by Mrs Ainsley Mabin (secretary) and Mr Hugh Kraefft(President) of the Merriwa Show committee.

ASSEMBLY Friday’s assembly was hosted by Class 4/5 who presented a very entertaining “4/5’s got Talent” as their class item. Jack and Ben were very amusing clowns, Lin Lin portrayed Dani Minogue, Alana was a convincing Natalie Imbruglia and Lachlan was a caustic Kyle Sandilands who kept telling us that his grandmother could act, tell jokes and dance better than any of the talented acts which were presented for our enjoyment. Finally his wish came true and his “grandmother” played by Ben appeared on stage! Awards went to the following people:

Jordan Taylor, Alkira Tritton, Breanna Goodear and Cody Towell of Year 5/6.

Tori Mcnaught, Tarah Cox, Lachlan Walker and Shai Blackadder of Class 4/5.

CLASS 4/5 NEWS The term for 4/5 has been an all Aussie affair – oi, oi, oi. Students have written historical recounts about the Wave Hill strike led by Vincent Lingiari and sung about in Paul Kelly’s well known song From Little Things Big Things Grow. They have also written some excellent narratives based on Australian author Andy Griffiths’ humorous story

In the Shower with Andy.

T h e y p r o u d l y performed the anthem (to the tune of another famous Aussie rock anthem) at the Variety Night.

Students studied the t h r e e l e v e l s o f government in Australia: local, state and federal. They created short videos to explain how the various levels of government impact on

their daily lives. 4/5 examined, drew and painted Australian

flora. They showed up Australia’s Got Talent by

performing 4/5’s Got Talent at the K-6

assembly. Some reflections … I liked using Premiere Elements to make

movies. - Dylan Daniel I learnt that the State government looks after

power, gas and water. - Locky Walker I enjoyed this term, especially practising for

our assembly item – it rocked! - Teianna Taylor

I enjoyed going down to the School of Arts and performing at the Variety Night. - Sharri Speed

I’m really grateful that the teachers organised our rewards days and I’m looking forward to Aussie Bush Camp. - Jazz Orton

I thought that painting the posters for the Little Sprouts day was fun and it was terrific to see them up. - Shai Blackadder

We’ve been learning how to write narratives

ROAR REPORT UPPER HUNTER RUGBY FESTIVAL

Last Thursday was the second annual Upper Hunter Rugby Festival that was held to coincide with the Rugby World Cup. The day was organised by the Merriwa Central School ROAR Academy and the Australian Rugby Union at Merriwa’s Number 1 sportsground. Merriwa Central School, Sandy Hollow Public School, St Joseph’s of Merriwa and St James of Muswellbrook attended the day and had a brilliant time. The day started with skills stations before moving into a round robin Walla Rugby tournament. Students were divided into two divisions (Stage 2 - Years 3 and 4, and Stage 3 - Years 5 and 6). The ROAR boys were involved in everything, setting up the oval, running skills stations, assisting in the canteen, coaching teams of juniors through the tournament stages and officiating games. Reports from students, parents and teachers on the day were all very

positive and we are looking forward to an even larger turn out next year. A massive thank you to Julie Russell, Kylie Austin and Cassie Constable who ran our canteen on the day and overcame some interesting obstacles as the day progressed. As always we are extremely grateful for your support! We would also like to thank Matt Johnston from the Australian Rugby Union who continues to support our school and the ROAR program. In addition to the festival he also spent time with our ROAR boys on the Wednesday afternoon conducting a coaching accreditation session which adds to their ever growing list of credentials. Thanks also to Josh Whale for donating his time and efforts at the festival for the second year running.

LEAGUE 7’S The University of Newcastle Amateur Rugby League Club’s Terry Kachel memorial annual schoolboy 7-a-side carnival for under 16’s on Wednesday 14 September, was simply awesome. Leading up front was the elected players player and Captain Tyler Austin who led with enthusiasm with solid hit ups and numbing tackles which set the platform for the other forwards Jeremy Rawlinson (Buddha), Darryl Mulholland and Zac Rawlings. Our very own Kyle Withers took out the day’s biggest hits award and played with great determination in all three games. Merriwa Centrals under 16’s back line did not take a backward step in either attack and defence. Outstandingly courageous efforts were seen all over the field from Jacob Russell, Daniel Walmsley, Patrick Gilbey, Jay-me Taylor, Eli Kiely, Michael Gilbey and Sean Edens-Rosa. Many highlights will stay etched in the memories of the supportive parents who travelled the long road to Newcastle, particularly the amazing team lifting try saving tackles by our outstanding full back Will Taylor. The scores are irrelevant; we were only edged out by four points in the first two games against renowned rugby league high schools, Duval (28-24) and Wallsend (24-20). The third game was a very gutsy defeat against Merewether and the team can all stand tall (even Jay-me) with the majority of our team being able to participate in this carnival next year.

A special thanks needs to go to the assistant coach and water boy Reece Hancock, with many tamed motivation speeches to his peers/classmates. Every player stayed well hydrated and was just as inspirational off the field as on it.

Thanks to Merriwa Central Under 16’s Rugby League Team, from your very inspired coach/sports coordinator.

SUCCESSFUL AT UHVEIN AWARDS On Wednesday 14 September over 160 people attended the Upper Hunter Vocational Educational and Industry Network (UHVEIN) awards evening which was held at the Scone Race Club. Merriwa Central school students were nominated in a number of categories for their excellent performances in their vocational subjects throughout 2011. The night involves students staff and industry being nominated from the Upper Hunter Region for their contribution and success in vocational education. The region includes Singleton, Muswellbrook, Scone, Aberdeen & Merriwa public & private schools and TAFE centres. Year 11 students who were nominated for their success in Metal & Engineering were Patrick Hocking, Jeremy Rawlinson and Adon Knight-Hall. Jeremy was successful in taking out the best all round Year 11 student in Metal & engineering for the region. In year 12 Jey Rawlinson was nominated and was successful in taking out the best Year 12 student in Metal & Engineering in the Upper Hunter. This was real credit to Jey who was also successful in 2010 in taking out the Year 11 award. Mr Phil Martyn was also awarded best all round Metal & Engineering teacher for the Upper Hunter region. This was a fitting reward for Phil’s many years of teaching Metal & Engineering at Merriwa Central School and it was lovely to see his hard work rewarded with the Year 11 & Year 12 awards going to Merriwa Central School students on the night. Below is a photo of Mr Martyn with Jeremy & Jey, and their awards.

Year 11 students nominated in Business Services were Megan Wightman and Jade

McConnell and Jade was successful in taking out the best all round year 11 Business Services student in the Upper Hunter Region. In Year 12 both Katie Cowan & Zoe Nairne were nominated but the award went to a student from Singleton High School. Merriwa Central School students undertaking a school based traineeship in Year 11 & 12 were also nominated. This category is highly contested as only one student is able to win across all the vocational subjects. Jeremy Rawlinson and Jade McConnell both received Highly Commended awards for their School based traineeships. Jeremy is completing his traineeship in Metal & Engineering at ADS in Muswellbrook and his supervisor Chris Harper was there to support Jeremy on the evening and received a certificate. Jade McConnell also received a highly commended award for her Business Services traineeship at Merriwa Pharmacy and Robert Smith attended the evening to support Jade and also received a certificate. Our other school based trainee who was nominated in the Year 12 category was Katie Cowan for her Business Services traineeship at Cowan’s Buses. I would like to thank all the businesses for supporting our year 11 & year 12 students with their traineeships and offer my congratulations to these three students.

CASSILIS PUBLIC SCHOOL

Last week will officially be renamed ‘Dressing-up and having a blast in the playground’ week! Small schools are definitely magical places when K-6 students can raid two bags of freshly washed costumes (thanks to Mrs Nairne) and use their imaginations and great social skills to make themselves and the teachers smile.

Veg Watch ‘ L a s t W e d n e s d a y , after recess, 3-6 went down the back of the school for Veg Watch. We were all very pleased to see Lorna and Phoebe again. When we were there we were look ing a t invertebrates.

An invertebrate is an animal without a spine. We also searched for weeds like the African Boxthorn, Fleabane and Prickly Pear. In class, all of the students were researching different

types of weeds. After we finished down the back we came up and performed a play or showed a slide or presented a poster. Lorna and Phoebe were proud of Cassilis School. Then we said goodbye.’- Written by Taine.

Dalkeith Lunch Thank you to Mr Bibby, Mr McLennan and Mrs Singh for assisting with transport last Thursday. The students had a fantastic time and it was greatly appreciated. Mat has written a short recount about the experience. ‘On 16 September, the school went up to Dalkeith. Dalkeith is a large property which is near our school. We had lunch there and had a sausage sizzle. After, we went to look at the cattle before we left. I enjoyed staying and watching the cattle.’ Happy 11 Birthday, Tarnisha, for tomorrow. Hope you have a brilliant day! Merriwa Spring Show Unfortunately, I was unable to get to the show to see the art exhibition but congratulations to

all students on your entries. They looked fantastic when they left school last week. Thank you, Mrs Leman, for setting up and taking down the school display. Well done to Steph for winning the colouring competit ion. Congratulations to Thomas and Brady for coming runner-up. Priya and Jack Nairne were

awarded 2nd and 1st prize for the infants drawing a n d h i g h l y commended in the p h o t o g r a p h y section. Great job!

Relay Team The team continued to train hard last week (thanks to the dedicated parents and students) and there has been a donation box and a hundreds club established at the Post Office in Cassilis. Please feel free to further support our team. The Learning at Cassilis Takes Many Forms The 2011 NAPLAN results for students in years 3 and 5 were sent home last week. Students were tested on spelling, reading, writing, grammar and numeracy. Individual reports revealed how the child performed in relation to their school, region and state group. Some very pleasing individual and school results were achieved. Of course, these tests are a single test on a single day and focus very clearly on English and numeracy skills. There are a lot of other learning experiences which are also important. Talents such as public speaking, drawing, running and dancing are also very important skills in our world. Social skills and other abilities such as getting along with others, problem solving, being compassionate and

helpful, showing initiative, learning from mistakes and being considerate also help is have a better world. NAPLAN results are very important and provide valuable information for our school planning. But such results should always be taken in the context of the whole individual. Celebrating all learning is the key to a successful school environment. At Cassilis, we always do just this and strive with pride. Year 6 shirts Our four year six students will be able to wear their special leaver’s shirts from the beginning of term 4. The students will use money raised from the lolly guessing competition held during this term. Kindergarten 2012 Orientation Our program for Kindergarten Orientation is

attached to t h i s newsletter. Thanks to Mrs Leman f o r organis ing this very i m p o r t a n t t r a n s i t i o n experience.

I want to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their hard work this term. Have a safe and enjoyable holiday and school resumes for teachers and students on Monday, 10 October.

As the term comes to an end it is good stop and think about the term we have had. During the term all staff and students have been involved in a variety of excursions. 5/6 ventured to Wangat Lodge where they experienced a variety of activities which made them more aware of the environment in which they live as well as some personal challenges. 3/4 discovered that we have an amazing naturally occurring coal seam close by when they visited Burning Mountain- this became part of their HSIE unit- Australia! You Are Standing In It. K/1/2 had a fantastic day exploring Dubbo Zoo, looking at a variety of animals and their habitats. Mary MacKillop’s Feast day was celebrated in conjunction with Grandparents Day and National Tree Planting Day. This was a day enjoyed by all and we managed to plant many trees in the Church grounds. The following day we had a visit from Richard Cootes who works for Catholic Mission through prayers, songs, and stories and fun he told us of people who are not as fortunate as us and encouraged us to continue to support mission activities. This will form our last day of terms focus when 5/6 will organise a Mission Day. Fathers Day was a wonderful opportunity to say thank you to our dads. Many dads came to share a BBQ breakfast and stayed for a liturgy and kite making activities. Lots of fun was had. This term we have also welcomed our 2012 Kindergarten children who have spend time in the classroom and with their buddies. We look forward to seeing them again. St. Joseph also hosted a Netball Gala day. This was a great day and something which the

students looked forward to. Thank you to Mrs Healy for organising this event. Once again we participated in Bookweek activities and a parade. The students with the help of Mrs Oldman explored the books on the shortlist and then came dressed as a character from the story. The students also learnt the theme song ‘One World, Many Stories’. This week concluded with a wonderful Little Sprouts Day. During National Literacy and Numeracy Week each student participated in our annual Public Speaking Competition. A student from each grade was then selected to present their speech at the Play night and winners from each stage competed at the Upper Hunter Regional Final last week. Play Night was a wonderful achievement for all students. All students and teachers worked hard to get the end result on stage for the night. Well done to everyone involved. We congratulate all our students who have represented the school throughout the term at sporting events whether it be Athletics, Horse Sports, Netball Gala Day, Rugby Union Clinic, Public Speaking, Debating, Little Sprouts Day, Music Lessons, Teachers have continued to attend professional development in a variety of areas including: Quality Teaching and Leadership, Spelling, ComprehensionRin, Changes to the Mass. Have a restful and safe holiday.

THE LIVERPOOL RANGE ZONE SUPPORT BRIGADE

The Liverpool Range Zone S u p p o r t Brigade is a v o l u n t e e r Rural Fire S e r v i c e brigade that

supports all our RFS brigades in the Liverpool Plains and Upper Hunter Shire council areas. The catering team co-ordinate the logistics of ensuring all fire-fighters have access to quality meals whilst they undertake their vital fire fighting operations of larger fires in our zone. The catering team has the ability to provide quality fulfilling meals, water and light snacks on the fire ground served from our fully equipped kitchen vehicles. The communications team are based at Willow Tree Fire Control Centre, as well as the Gunnedah and Merriwa operational centres as required. They are equipped with an operational command vehicle that can be placed on site to co-ordinate all communications to and from the fire ground. Community Engagement is a vital service that undertakes such roles as informing the public before, during and after fires in the local areas. The Community Engagement team also participate in events such as School and community education talks, street and community meetings. The Support brigade offers a great opportunity for those members of the community that wish to assist and support the wonderful and vital work of the volunteer men and Women firefighters of the Rural Fire Service, without the need to be on the front-line, fighting fires.

WOOLBROOK RURAL INDUSTRIES

There was a time when I was an optimist regarding the future of the human race, believing that no matter what happened we would somehow muddle through and that science and human knowledge, though not always a blessing, would in the end solve our problems as needed. However, optimism has gradually given way to pessimism and I now view with consternation and apprehension what we are doing to our world, our apparent inability to curb our excesses or even show much interest in what is happening with, for instance, climate change, the rape of our resources, and the abuse of our Capitalist System, the last clearly shown yet again by the revelations still surfacing in the so called Global Financial Crisis (GFC). Many books have been written as to why the GFC happened and why nobody saw it coming, and a recent one I saw reviewed was titled “This Time It Will Be Different”, referring to the present crisis and not to the next inevitable one, whenever that may be. In fact, not only are the reasons for the GFC blindingly obvious, but they can be summed up in just a few words including Greed, Stupidity, Apathy, Cynicism, Fraud and Criminality. That the GFC was coming was blindingly obvious long before it actually arrived, and you may recall that about the middle of 2006 I wrote a series of Ringer articles which began by saying that over the past few years I had become more and more concerned about what was happening in world finance and the gathering bubble. I gave detailed reasons for this over some 5000 words, including forecasting what was coming. These all turned out to be accurate and the first cracks in the enormous world bubble began to appear about a year later with the failure of the Northern Rock Bank about mid 2007, though it was bailed out by the British Government. However, the real crash did not come till the Lehman Bros. Bank failed in (as I recall) September 2008, world wide finance froze, and we feared financial apocalypse, which is still conceivable. I claim no credit for these forecasts because I relied on nothing more than a kindergarten level knowledge of financial history to know that busts follow booms as surely as night follows day and gave several examples

stretching back hundreds of years as far as the South Sea and Dutch Tulip Bubbles. Further, I said the bigger the boom the bigger the bust, and that the financial world would be appalled when the time came, as in all busts, when the gory details gradually surfaced for years afterwards. For instance, after Allan Bond took over Bell Resources in 1982 and his empire fell in a heap it was 18 years before all was revealed and resolved, e.g. 2010. You might ask how I was able to make these forecasts when apparently nobody else was doing so, and indeed even now many profess not to know why the GFC happened. The truth is that many must have known the boom could not go forever, (“This time it will be different”), but human stupidity and greed was such that many believed it would, or claimed it would, perhaps because they were too busy feeding at the trough, or hoped that when the music stopped they would not be left holding the parcel. However, I must admit that when it did happen it was beyond my gravest fears, and much of that revealed was so fraudulent, so cynical, and displayed such unprecedented greed and avarice that even I, with quite a low regard for humanity, was astonished. I will give a few examples of this, the first being the so called “Collateralised Debt Obligations” (CDOs). In mid 2006, when all was roses, I wrote about Australian “Low-Doc. Loans” (i.e. “Low Document Loans”) and American “Sub-Prime Loans”, which were given to applicants who did not have sufficient documentation to prove they could repay them. In Australia these often went to professional tax evaders who could not produce Tax Returns as evidence of repayment capacity. Naturally the Australian Tax Office (ATO) became interested, demanded the banks provide them with details of these loans, the banks refused, and the ATO took them to court and won. However, in America they were taken infinitely further in that millions of loans were handed out indiscriminately to borrowers who had no possible hope of ever repaying them. Those organising these loans, after collecting their commission, then merged them in huge bundles, obtained a Triple A Credit Rating (!!!) for them, and sold them as CDOs all over the world, including to Australian Organisations

such as Charities and Shires. Regarding the latter, some were stung for amounts up to $21 million, though I am happy to say our own Shire does not appear to be among them. Back in mid 2006 I referred to these loans as “crap” loans because I was unable to use a much more suitable word in this family paper. The depth of cynicism displayed by those who perpetrated them, and they have been a significant factor in devastating world finance, has since been revealed because we now know that they jokingly referred to them as “Ninja Loans”, i.e. “No Income, No Job, No Assets”; further, in some cases those responsible for them were so certain they would fail that they took out forward financial positions that depended on comprehensive Ninja failures for their success and profitability.

MERRIWA SHOW TALENT QUEST The Hunter Mutual “Merriwa’s Got Talent” quest at Merriwa Show on Saturday attracted a record 20 entries from Merriwa, Scone and Sandy Hollow. Aged from three to 18 the artists sang and danced their way through an entertaining program, with the packed audience applauding as one quality act succeeded another. Before they began, Merriwa Show president Hugh Kraefft said he was impressed with the enthusiasm and dedication of the contestants and wished them all the best of luck. “There is so much talent out there and we aim to give young people the chance to present their acts in a fun atmosphere, and win some substantial prize money,” he said. Compere Sid Collison kept his audience in the Roach Pavilion amused between acts as the judges considered their verdicts. Mr Collison is area manager for the “Merriwa’s Got Talent” sponsor, Hunter Mutual. Judges Sue Whitlock, Des Wild and Louise Gill had some nail-biting decisions to make during the hour and a half of the contest. They said the talent was outstanding and judging had been a pleasurable challenge. Hunter Mutual Merriwa branch manager Trudie Byfield said the contest had proved so popular that Hunter Mutual would be happy to continue its sponsorship for the next “Merriwa’s Got Talent”. The event was produced by former Merriwa Show secretary Enid Holt. She said this was the third time the Show had run a talent quest and it was gaining momentum every year.

MHEG NEWS Don’t forget our free Merriwa community workshop on Saturday September 24 at Merriwa RSL Club, from 10.30am to 3.30pm. Your lunch will also be provided free - but for catering purposes you MUST RSVP on 9262 6989 or [email protected] , before Friday. At the workshop the Environmental Defender’s Office will explain landowners’ rights and advocacy options with respect to coal mining and coal seam gas. Wasn’t the Merriwa Show a great experience this year? The weather was kind and everything seemed to go well. Over both days we (Merriwa Healthy Environment Group) had a regular flow of people stopping at our stall, to discuss the expansion of coal and coal seam gas mining and how it was affecting their lives.

They came from a wide area, from Sydney, Muswellbrook, Scone and other parts of the Hunter and our NO GAS signs pulled them up in their tracks. We were able to give them information about CSG, coal mining, and above all what we have in this precious part of the world that is now under threat. On the bright side, the competition to win a Blue Mountains weekend in a delightful log cabin, plus second prize of Stone Hill wines and third prize of Falcon olive oil products, went to: Winner: Murray Wright Second: Graham Brown Third: Kate Bull Congratulations to all and a big thankyou to the public for all their support.

SUSPECT STROKE? THINK FAST Heart and blood-vessel disease, known medically as cardiovascular disease, remains Australia’s number one killer. It affects nearly 2.5 million Australians. Together, heart attack and stroke (maybe we should call it “brain attack”) account for around a third of all deaths in Australia. This year Australians will suffer more than 60,000 new and recurrent strokes – that’s one stroke every 10 minutes. Statistics indicate that one in five people having a first ever stroke will die within a month and one in three die within a year. Yet, early action will save many of these lives. A stroke (also called a cerebrovascular accident) is the death of brain tissue resulting from lack of blood flow and insufficient oxygen to the brain. Another type of stroke (a cerebral haemorrhage) is caused by bleeding into brain tissue. The signs of stroke could be any one or combination of the following: weakness or numbness, or paralysis – in the face, arm or leg; difficulty speaking or understanding; dizziness; sudden loss of vision; sudden and severe headache; difficulty swallowing. These signs may last only a few minutes or may last for several hours (called a transient ischaemic attack – TIA). They are often a warning of an impending stroke and must never be ignored. Stroke is a medical emergency. If you experience the signs of stroke or see them in someone else, seek immediate medical attention. Prompt action can prevent further damage to the brain and help someone make a better recovery. Think FAST is the message which has come from the recent National Stroke Week. According to the Stroke Foundation ( c h e c k o u t t h e i r w e b s i t e a t www.strokefoundation.com.au ), the FAST test is an easy way to recognise and remember the signs of a stroke and to be in a position to act

quickly to get help. Using the FAST test involves asking yourself three simple questions about the person you suspect might be in danger - and then acting quickly: Face – check their face, has the mouth

drooped? Arms – can they lift both arms? Speech – is their speech slurred? Do they

understand you? Time – time is critical. If you see any of the

above signs, call 000 immediately. The risk of stroke is influenced by a number of factors: as we get older the risk is greater; men suffer stroke more often than women; and family history of stroke puts us more at risk. There’s not much we can do about these issues. However, there are some simple lifestyle changes we can make which will reduce the risk of stroke and reduce the risk of heart disease, as well. High blood pressure and high blood cholesterol levels are a major contributing factor to blood vessel disease which often leads to stroke. Blood pressure and cholesterol levels can be managed; sometimes just by sensible attention to diet and exercise; and sometimes by the regular, and usually long term, use of medicines. If you do need medicines to lower your blood pressure, the possibility is that they will need to be taken forever. Sometimes that is difficult to accept; especially when, in all likelihood, there are no noticeable symptoms of the blood pressure being raised. In fact, occasionally the medicines themselves have unwanted effects. They may make you feel drowsy, dizzy or nauseated. If side effects with your blood pressure medicines do occur, you should tell your doctor and pharmacist. There are other factors, too, which make stroke more likely – smoking, being overweight, having uncontrolled diabetes or having an irregular pulse (known as atrial fibrillation or AF). For more advice about treating and preventing stroke, pick up a fact card from Merriwa Pharmacy.

The Merriwa Show Weekend seems to have been successful. The kids looked as though they were enjoying themselves and the weather was perfect. Well done to all those who entered into different events and sections of the show.

Calendars 2012 is just around the corner, so now is the time to buy the calendar for next year. They also make perfect gifts for people overseas as they are flat and some are filled with beautiful images of Australian landscapes, cities, flora and fauna. Aussie Rigs and Road Trains is a great calendar for those who love trucks (or know someone who does). There are calendars full of fashions of the past, cats and dogs and many other themes.

Diaries A Quilters Diary is a beautiful, hardcover, spiral-bound diary that is perfect for those who love quilting. Each opening has a week’s planner as well as an inspiring image of a quilted product. There are also inspiring quotations scattered throughout. This diary includes a 2012 planner, a list of the major craft shows and their dates, contact details for the quilting guilds in Australia, instructions for some of the quilting basics, an address section, a conversion chart, a list of the public holidays for each state, as well as school holiday dates.

Collins Belmont diary is always popular. This particular one is A4, day to a page. It contains a full year planner, a complete list of public holidays and important dates; public holidays for overseas countries, school holidays, international dialing codes and time zones, conversion tables, a staff leave section, address section and is perfect for anyone in business.

My Book of Secrets is the perfect journal for a young girl. Here is an address book, birthday section- with the birth stones and flowers listed for each month. There is a journal section and an activity section, as well as a special place to keep all of the important secrets that girls must have. This journal is hard cover with a magnetic strip closure. It is the perfect gift for the social little butterfly.

Celebrate Spring with Better Homes and Gardens latest issue is a celebration of Spring through bright colours (just check out the front cover), ideas for entertaining (now that it’s warming up), must have recipes to celebrate the new season including a ridiculously mouth-watering chocolate praline roulade, and great party food. There are also great gardening ideas (did you know you can now grow purple capsicum!) and cheap chic decorating ideas.

The Nightmare Thief The latest offering from Meg Gardiner is a Jo Beckett Thriller, a forensic Psychiatrist who dissects the life and mind of the victim before going after the killer. In this book, sees a group of college kids embark on an “urban reality game” that goes horribly wrong, especially when Jo Beckett get caught in the middle of it.

Scallywag Dolls For all those who are awaiting the arrival of the new range of Scallywag dolls, they are expected to arrive within the next week. They are adorable and we are expecting larger ones with this order. If you are interested, get in quick as they are sure to disappear quickly.

Victoria Books Just in time for the School Holidays, we are expecting the next shipment to arrive any day now - come in and grab a catalogue when they arrive.

MORE THAN JUST A POST OFFICE! Mobile Specials Telstra’s Easycall 2 big button phone is part of

Posts Specials catalogue for this month. Pay $99 and we throw-in a $20 recharge voucher for free. This is a mobile phone with a difference and is aimed at those who are either unable or lacking in confidence to use a normal mobile. The buttons and the switches are big and the characters on the screen big and clear. The phone will speak numbers as you press them. You can programme the Easy Call to contact friends/family just by flicking a switch. It has a blue tick for best reception and also an easily operated torch and FM radio. There are no unnecessary features to complicate things – this phone is just designed to make calls easy.

Also on special the popular Samsung S5511T flip-phone in red or black for only $79. An attractive mobile that has proven strong and reliable through various updates over the last 4 years. Don’t delay, specials only available until sold or 1 October. Scam & Phishing Emails Everyone with a computer should know by now that you do not open email attachments or go

to web sites suggested in emails unless you are confident of the authenticity of the source of the email. Anything that looks strange should be deleted straightaway. Don’t heed this advise and you could very well be faced with pain and distress as your computer starts to do very funny things. Like steal the money in your bank account! Unfortunately the low lives that originate the viruses, worms, scams and phishing emails are constantly dreaming up new ways to catch you. Doing the rounds recently is an email purporting to be from Post that tells you that a parcel is ready for collection and to log on to a web site to verify. Delete it! Australia Post don’t send unsolicited emails unless you have previously queried the delivery of an article. Of course a good anti-virus programme will ease most of your worries. See us for Nortons, always in stock.

Samsung Camera We have the Samsung ES80 digital camera in stock and I’m impressed. Normally for a sub $100 camera you can get good features and picture quality but they usually come in a plastic case that’s a bit chunky. However the ES80 is quite slim and attractive with a metal case. Also has 12.2 megapixel resolution, image stabilisation, 5x optical zoom and a lot more. All for only $89 – while stocks last.

Olin Portable DVD Player Keep the kids (of all ages) happy in the car – or anywhere! Only $99 with a 9 inch widescreen, compatible with most discs and plays USB & SD cards as well as MP3 files. Used the internal speakers or earphone and plays a wide variety of discs and files.

CAN THE COMMUNITY SUPPORT LEGACY? I have supplied rosemary, free of charge, to Sydney Legacy since the early 1990’s. I enjoy the opportunity to be a member of the team of volunteers that help Legacy raise money for their good work. Our rosemary helped make more than $60,000 last year. I need help to continue to fill an ever increasing need that Legacy has. I will continue to provide as much rosemary as I can but there is a greater need now and in the long term. I would like to see a Merriwa group that will support legacy forever. Rosemary grows very well in Merriwa. I dream of a community growing rosemary hedges all over the place. The Merriwa RSL Club have agreed to be part of the project acting as a collection point prior to ANZAC day and in the promotion of the idea. I have spoken to Legacy about this idea and they are pleased and will co-operate to promote the idea and Merriwa along with it. If you are interested please contact me or the RSL Club and provide you contact details. The best contact for me is the Farm number, 6548 2465 on mobile 0407 001 583. What do you think? Can you help and in doing so help link Merriwa up with Legacy in a positive manner that will add to the towns standing on the state? Your response will generate the next step. Cheers

GOODBYE FROM THE IRONBARK Wendy and I feel that we have to say a huge thank you to all who supported us at the Ironbark cafe. We took on this cafe without any prior experience and it has always been a dream of ours to run a business and obviously prosper from it. I won’t go into detail as to why we closed the shop but you can guess that it wasn’t paying for itself. We put our heart and soul into it, especially Wendy who virtually worked 7 days a week getting it off the ground and to that I am very proud. To our beautiful staff that stuck with us through the tough times, you’re happy and caring nature made our job easier. We love you all and will miss you.

Ph 6581 1650 My name is Steven Howard, my family and I run a successful building company in Port Macquarie on the mid North Coast of NSW. My father, Peter, with over 40 years experience, started the business. My brother, Ben, and I were put through our apprenticeships by our father 20 years ago. I have been coming to Merriwa for 12 years now, as I am married to a local man’s (Mick Cronin) daughter, Gabrielle. We have just had our first child and we would like to visit Merriwa more often so his grandparents can see more of him and his mother. If you have any building work that needs doing, no job too big or small, I would be very happy to give a free measure and quote.

Where to from here? We are going to take a little break to unwind, spend some time with our son and his wife and our two beautiful grand sons at Raymond Terrace. We are hoping to get some work over there for a while to build the bank account up then off to join the grey nomads. It was sad to close the doors for the last time as we really got to know a lot of wonderful people that came in for a coffee or a meal regularly; we hope our friendship will continue for years to come. We love Merriwa and will always call this great town home. Thank you.

MEET YOUR LOCAL VOLUNTEER FIREFIGHTERS AT RFS OPEN DAY

NSW Rural Fire Service (NSW RFS) volunteers from across the Liverpool Range Zone area will throw open the doors to their stations on Saturday 24 September, for the annual RFS Open Day. Steve Kirin, Acting Fire Mitigation Officer said this year’s Open Day marks the start of Bush Fire Awareness Week, which aims to raise awareness of the risks of bush fires and the best ways to protect yourself, your families and properties from fire. The following RFS brigade stations in Liverpool Range Zone will be welcoming visitors in next weekend’s Open Day. The Merriwa River Rural Fire Service will be open between 10am and 2pm. "The NSW RFS Open Day is a fun and interesting day out for families and for the volunteers, who enjoy opening up their station and showing the local community what they do,” said Fire Mitigation Officer Kirin. “It’s a great opportunity for the community to discover more about the role volunteers play at all types of emergencies, with many brigades holding practical demonstrations”.

“Our members are a part of the community and Open Day is a chance for everyone to see what these volunteer firefighters do every day. “For children and adults alike, it’s also a chance to learn valuable skills on how to protect you and your family from bush and grass fires.

“I’d encourage all local residents to come along on Saturday 24 September, join in the fun and thank our RFS volunteers for the invaluable work they do,” said Fire Mitigation Officer Kirin.

Bush Fire Awareness Week runs from Saturday 24 September to Friday 30 September.

LADIES GOLF NEWS

A 4BBB and Individual stableford round was decided to be played when 12 girls turned up for golf last week. Partners were allocated on a handicap basis with the lower handicappers accompanying a higher one.

Robyn and De and Captain Di and Didie were the first group off followed by Mary and Libby playing with Merrie and Julia. The last four to play were Sue and Jane playing Tania and Dinie. Most teams were well balanced and when one player failed to record points on a hole their partner often did.

with a couple of girls having five three putts which damaged their score cards and cost them dearly at 50cents each time.

The individual winner was Dinie who hit the ball incredibly well all day and finished well clear of everyone else with 38 points. Other notable scores were Captain Di’s 35 points and Merrie’s 35 points. Winners of the 4BBB were Dinie who was partnered with Tania and scored a massive 45 points followed by Mary and Libby on 42 points. Tania’s long distance gobbler on the 5th was a highlight of the round.

De won nearest the pin on the 18th just edging out Jane who hit a magnificent ball out of the deep rough out in the gully to end up five feet from the pin. The ball draw was won by De and Robyn.
