Definition
• Also known as Intellectual Disability.
• Mental Retardation is defined by a below average intelligence and set of life skills.
• It is noticed before the age of 18.
Causes
• Trauma before or during birth, such as oxygen loss, alcohol exposure, or infection.
• Genetic abnormalities, such as inherited abnormal genes, Down syndrome, and fragile X syndrome.
• PKU (phenylketonuria) lead or mercury poisoning in the womb.
Symptoms
• Impulsivity and Hyperactivity is typically seen in those with Mental Retardation.
• May also include difficulty thinking, and understanding, coupled with restlessness.
Treatments
• There is no sure for mental retardation. However, those with the disorder can benefit from:• Behavior Therapy
• Animal-Assisted Therapy
• Specific kinds of drug therapy
