Florida Southern College Founded by the United Methodist Church in 1883, Florida Southern is the oldest private college in Florida, moving to Lakeland in 1922. Located on the north shore of Lakeland’s scenic Lake Hollingsworth, FSC is home to the world’s largest single-site collection of architecture by renowned architect Frank Lloyd Wright, including the recently refurbished Water Dome. The 100-acre campus also includes a number of other outstanding facilities – George W. Jenkins Field House (for basketball and volleyball), Barnett Field (for softball and soccer), 11 residence halls and several College-owned apartments and houses and the Nina B. Hollis Wellness Center, which consists of a state-of-the-art fitness center, recreational facilities, and an NCAA competition-size outdoor swimming pool. The College recently opened the new Marshall and Vera Lea Rinker Technology Center, which is staffed 24/7. There are several new academic buildings on campus, including the state-of-the-art Joe K. and Alberta Blanton Nursing Building and the Dr. Marcene H. and Robert E. Christoverson Humanities Building. With Lakeland’s population at more than 94,000, FSC is only about an hour’s drive from the major metropolitan areas of Tampa and Orlando. Well-known attractions like Disney World, Universal Studios, Epcot Center, Sea World, Busch Gardens and some of the world’s most popular beaches are only a short drive from campus. Major League Baseball’s Detroit Tigers make Lakeland their annual spring training home, and several other big league teams train in the nearby area. Prominent professional sports figures who are FSC alums include professional golfers Lee Janzen and Rocco Mediate and Major League Baseball player Matt Joyce (Tampa Bay Rays).

Founded by the United Methodist Church, Florida Southern College is one of the oldest private colleges in the state, tracing its beginnings to a small seminary in Orlando in 1885. The tie to its founding church has remained constant and is today, a proud part of the College's heritage and a bright beacon for the future. Florida Southern moved to Lakeland in the heart of Florida's citrus belt in 1922 and began the construction of a campus that would eventually become a national landmark. The beautiful 100-acre campus, on the north shore of Lake Hollingsworth, includes the world's largest collection of buildings by master architect Frank Lloyd Wright. Florida Southern’s West Campus, now known throughout the world, actually had its inception in the mind of Dr. Ludd M. Spivey, president of the college from 1925-1957.

In 1935 he conceived the idea of an ultra-modern campus, designed by the world's leading architect. Ground was broken two years later for the first building in the Wright collection, the Annie Pfeiffer Chapel. What Frank Lloyd Wright created on the campus is amazing. His original work is still as modern and exciting as the newest buildings still on many architect's drawing boards. It is, perhaps, symbolic that the greatest concentration of his genius should be located at a small, private institution of higher learning. Perhaps he describes it best, "...out of the ground and into the light, a child of the sun...the college of tomorrow."

A grouping of three residence halls, thePublix Commons are close to just abouteverything on the Florida Southerncampus. All three buildings offer suite-style living in which six students each havetheir own rooms and share a living areaand bathroom. The Publix Commons alsois home to Florida Southern’s Greekorganizations.

Florida Southern’s recently renovated Water Dome, designed byFrank Lloyd Wright, made its premiere performance on October25, 2007. The Water Dome features 74 jets powering streams ofwater 45-feet into the air. It took almost 260,000 gallons of waterto fill the basin of the dome and at full power 4,800 gallons arewater are pumped per minute.

All of Florida Southern College’sresidence halls offer wireless accessin the common lobby areas and everyroom offers cable TV and is wired forinternet access. In addition, wirelesshotspots on campus include the RouxLibrary, TûTû’s Cyber Cafe (whichoffers Starbucks products), Wynee’sBistro (our cafeteria), and the Nina B.Hollis Wellness Center and pool area.

As one of the four originalbuildings on the FSC campus,Joseph-Reynolds Hall (“JR”)offers one of the best views oncampus. It sits atop a hilloverlooking Lake Hollingsworth.Community life is big here - thewomen of JR form groups withinthe building as a whole and alsowithin the “wings” and smallerhallways. JR and its companionhall, Spivey, are located in thecenter of campus between EdgeHall and Ordway and serve mainlyas first-year female residencehalls.

Wesley Hall is one of two new twin residence halls at FSC, and opened in the fall of 2008. The second building, Nicholas Hall,opened in the fall of 2009. Each new residence hall includes 115 bedrooms with views of Lake Hollingsworth, meetingrooms, student lounges, kitchens, and study spaces.

Anne B. Kerr, Ph.D. College President Since her appointment as Florida Southern College’s seventeenth president in 2004, Dr. Anne Kerr’s visionary leadership has enhanced the student experience on campus and increased the college’s national prominence. Under her direction, the institution has renewed its

commitment to educate the whole person—academically, socially, spiritually and physically—in order to insure that students leave prepared to make a positive and consequential impact on our world. Early in her tenure, Dr. Kerr oversaw implementation of a comprehensive strategic plan for the College that was designed to enrich all facets of our student-centered culture. Opportunities for active learning and leadership were increased; innovative, engaged, and personalized instruction were prioritized; and the College’s scholar-athlete program became a model for NCAA Division II athletic programs. Recent college improvements include ongoing restoration projects on the Frank Lloyd Wright campus (the Water Dome, Esplanades, and Annie Pfeiffer Chapel) and the construction (Fall 2010) of a Frank Lloyd Wright Usonian House for use as a campus Visitor Center, which will be the first Wright design built since 1966. Other new construction includes the two-

building Barnett Residential Complex and the Christoverson Humanities Building (all three designed by world-renowned architect Robert A.M. Stern), the McKay Archives Center, the Blanton Nursing Building, the Rinker Technology Center, and TûTû’s Café (located in the Roux Library). Further improvements include the complete renovation of the student dining facility (Wynee’s Bistro), residence hall and campus-wide technology upgrades, and a campus beautification project featuring dozens of interconnected plazas and gardens. Dr. Kerr graduated from Mercer University and received her M.S. and Ph.D. in Educational Psychology from Florida State University. Prior to assuming the Presidency at Florida Southern, she served as Vice President for Advancement both at the University of Richmond and at Rollins College. She has held numerous volunteer leadership roles, and currently serves on the boards of SunTrust Bank Mid-Florida, All Saints’ Academy, EarthLinked Technologies, Inc., the Polk Museum of Art, and the Florida Chamber of Commerce. Presently, she is completing a two-year term as president of the Sunshine State Conference. Dr. Kerr and her husband, Roy, have a sixteen-year-old son, Ed, who plays baseball for All Saints’ Academy. Dr. Roy Kerr is a retired professor of Spanish and a baseball historian, whose recent publications include The Loving of the Game: A Baseball Memoir (2007); Sliding Billy Hamilton: The Life and Times of Baseball’s First Great Leadoff Man (2010), and Roger Connor: Home Run King of Nineteenth-Century Baseball (2011).

Pete Meyer Athletic Director

Now in his third year as Director of Athletics at Florida Southern College, Pete Meyer saw Moccasin teams enjoy considerable success in 2009-10. The men’s golf team captured its 12th NCAA national title and the school’s 27th, while the women’s golf team finished third. Swimmer Jeb Halfacre won the 200-yard backstroke at the NCAA championship, giving FSC its first individual national champion in swimming. NCAA postseason bids went to women’s soccer, golf and tennis and men’s cross country, basketball, golf, tennis and baseball. Both swimming teams and the women’s cross country team had individual NCAA qualifiers. FSC won SSC titles in men’s cross country (their 13th straight), men’s basketball and men’s golf. All of that success combined to give the Moccasins a 23rd-place finish in the 2009-10 Learfield Sports/NACDA Cup standings and their ninth top-25 finish in the program’s history. In Meyer’s first year as AD (2008-09), Moccasin teams produced three SSC championships (men’s cross country, men’s basketball, softball) and a fifth-place national finish in women’s golf. Eleven FSC teams went to NCAA postseason competition. Named to the AD position Feb. 21, 2008, he officially assumed his duties July 1, 2008, when Lois Webb retired. In the fall of 2008, Meyer was given the additional title of Dean of Wellness, putting the operation of the Hollis Wellness Center, as well as the water ski program and campus intramurals under his direction.

Meyer, who has been at Florida Southern since 1998, was the Moccasins’ head baseball coach from 2002 through 2008. He also served as assistant athletics director for Webb from February of 2006 until his AD appointment. As baseball coach, Meyer spent six full seasons as head coach, guiding the Moccasins to their ninth NCAA Division II national title in 2005 with a 51-11 record. His head coaching record at Florida Southern was 257-111-1, while his overall record as a head coach was 296-141-1. Thirty-four Moccasin baseball players were drafted or signed professional contracts during Meyer’s tenure at FSC. Before officially assuming the reigns of head coach, Meyer had served for over three years as Florida Southern's top assistant coach under Chuck Anderson. He also was the program’s recruiting coordinator. Prior to joining the Florida Southern coaching staff, Meyer spent five seasons at Valdosta State, working under legendary head coach Tommy Thomas. Before his stint at Valdosta State, Meyer was head baseball coach at Oglethorpe University in Atlanta, where he coordinated the start of the school’s Division III program in 1991. His Oglethorpe teams went 39-30 in two seasons (1992-93). He served as a graduate assistant at Valdosta State from 1988-90, while earning his M. Ed. in physical education. A four-year baseball letterman at the College of Wooster in Ohio, Meyer graduated in 1987 with a B.A. in speech communication. Meyer is married to the former Julie Newnum. The couple has three children, 22-year old Ross and 20-year old Mitchell, both of whom are enrolled at FSC, and 19-year old Megan, who attends Trinity University in Texas.

HEAD MEN’S SOCCER COACH HUGH SEYFARTH Hugh Seyfarth is in his sixth year as head coach of the Florida Southern College men’s soccer program.

Entering the 2010 season, he is only the fourth head coach in the program’s 54-year history, following Jim Bush (1957-80), Sam Snow (1981-92) and Kris Pahl (1993-2004). Seyfarth came to Florida Southern after seven years as an assistant coach with both the men’s and women’s teams at Miami University in Ohio. While at Miami, Seyfarth made his first connection with Florida Southern by serving under Bobby Kramig, a former Moccasin goalkeeper from 1978-81, and a two-time MVP.

Hired in June of 2005, Seyfarth had barely over a month to prepare for his first collegiate head coaching job after making the move from Ohio. He officially debuted with a 4-0 win over Palm Beach Atlantic on August 27, and followed that by taking the Mocs on the road for a 2-1 upset of Montevallo, their first win over a nationally

ranked opponent in five years. The Mocs finished that season with an 8-8 record, the most wins for any first-year Moccasin soccer coach. One year later, the Moccasins went 6-9-3, but jumped three spots in the Sunshine State Conference standings with a 3-3-2 league record and advanced to the SSC Tournament semi-finals. That record came against the most difficult schedule in the league too, as Florida Southern faced four top-20 teams, all four teams that played in the NCAA Division II South Region Tournament, and one NAIA squad that reached the national semi-finals. The second half of the season saw Florida Southern defeat two regionally ranked teams and tie another. Three Moccasins ended up on the All-SSC Team, the most in six years. In 2007, Seyfarth’s third season at Florida Southern, the Moccasins again played the most challenging schedule in the SSC. Florida Southern’s opponents averaged nearly 11 wins and had a combined winning percentage of .600, with four of them nationally ranked at the end of the season and three others ranked during the season. Five of those teams reached the national top 10 at some point during the year. The Mocs also had two top-20 NAIA schools on the schedule, and for the second year in a row played all four teams that advanced to the NCAA Division II South Region Tournament. Against that schedule, the Moccasins went 5-9-1, a season which saw them play nine of the final top ten teams in the South Region. The Mocs dropped two of those games in overtime and took regional qualifiers West Florida and Tampa late into the second half before falling 3-2 in both games. Last year marked the fourth straight year Florida Southern has taken on all four of the South Region’s NCAA Tournament teams, and the Mocs faced five NCAA playoff teams overall. That rugged schedule tested the Mocs every time they took the field, and though the year ended with a 1-12-1 record, Seyfarth’s team had shown vast improvement over the course of the season. That was demonstrated in the final two games when a youthful roster with 20 freshmen and sophomores nearly upset both 20th-ranked Lynn and #6 Rollins. Only a week before, the Mocs had tied another of the other South Region’s top teams in 2009 with a 1-1 draw at Palm Beach Atlantic. It brought Seyfarth’s career record with the Moccasins to 23-50-5. Before coming to Florida Southern, Seyfarth had put together an 11-year coaching resumé that included seven seasons at the Division I level with Miami University in Ohio. While there, he served as an assistant with both the men’s and women’s teams during the 1998 and ‘99 seasons before joining the women’s program full-time in 2000. He also served as the Associate Director of the Miami University Youth Soccer Tournament from 1998-2005, assisting in the planning, marketing and operations of the 224-team event. A former college goalkeeper, Seyfarth worked primarily with the RedHawks’ defense, which lowered its goals against average by more than a goal per game in five years under his direction, and recorded 32 shutouts. That included a school-record 10 shutouts in 2002. In his seven seasons with the Miami women’s team, the RedHawks went 84-47-1, won three conference tournament titles and one regular season title in the Mid-America Conference. The RedHawks made three trips to the NCAA Tournament, advancing to the second round in both 2001 and 2002. Seyfarth’s first college coaching job came at Earlham College in Indiana from 1996-98, where he spent two years as assistant coach for the Quaker men’s program. That included a term as interim head coach during the second half of the ‘96 season. From 1994-95, Seyfarth was an assistant coach and goalkeeper coach for the boy’s varsity team at Centerville High School, a nationally recognized program in central Ohio. While there, his starting keeper in 1995 was named the Ohio Player-of-the-Year and a high school All-American. Seyfarth’s resumé also includes the title of staff coach for the Indiana ODP Under-14 girls’ state team in 1997, and assistant coach for the U-16 boy’s team in 1996. He has coached a number of club teams in Ohio and Indiana, and Seyfarth holds a USSF "A" coaching license. As a college athlete, Seyfarth was a four-year letterman and all-conference goalkeeper at DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana, where he played for Page Cotton, who retired in 2008 with 390 career wins. Seyfarth was a Dean’s List student and team captain as a senior before graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree in history in 1994. He helped the Tigers to a four-year overall record of 52-14-5, a mark of 24-0 in the Indiana Collegiate Athletic Conference, and a berth in the 1993 NCAA Division III Tournament. During his senior year, the Tigers had one of their best seasons in school history with a 15-2-2 record.

After receiving his bachelor’s degree from DePauw, Seyfarth earned a Master’s in Marketing from the Richard T. Farmer School of Business Administration at Miami University in May of 2000. He also completed an intensive hands-on training program focused on the sales, marketing, promotion and communication process of sports and entertainment organizations that June, before becoming an instructor at the Farmer School of Business later that year. He held that position through the spring of 2005, and now serves as an instructor in the Florida Southern College physical education department in addition to his coaching duties. Hugh and his wife Stacey now live in Lakeland with their two dogs, Moose and Max, in Lakeland.

Assistant Coach Derek Zimmerman Derek Zimmerman joined the Florida Southern coaching staff in 2008, and is now in his third year as assistant coach of the Moccasins. He brings 12 years of coaching experience at the club level and is currently the head coach of the Lakeland FC 95-96 Boys Premier Team. Zimmerman was a 1994 All-State selection and region player-of-the-year at Lemon Bay High School before playing four years (1994-97) at Division I Radford University in Virginia. After graduating with a degree in Criminal Justice in 1998, he returned to Florida and became active with Lakeland youth soccer. While coaching with Lakeland Highlands FC, he has guided teams to the Region C semifinals in 2004-05, a third place finish in the USA Division I League in 2005 and 2006, a first place finish in Champions Group F in 2006-07, and several other finals or semifinal appearances in tournament play.

THE BEST OF THE BEST For the third year in a row, the Florida Southern men’s soccer team was recognized by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America as one of the top academic teams in the country, and last year, the Moccasins were the #1 team in all of NCAA Division II. The NSCAA Team Academic Award is earned by those programs owning a collective grade point average of 3.00 or better during the entire academic year. Last year’s award covered the 2008‐09 school year, and the 2009 Moccasins are in the running for the same award this year.

Did You Know? While there have been several sets of brothers to play soccer at Florida Southern, Sebastian and Patrick Abrahamsson are the first to play on the team together since Bruce and Scott James did so for one year in 1986. The two James brothers, who hailed from Ormond Beach, were both starting defenders for Florida Southern that year, and each had a goal and an assist. The last time two brothers scored for Florida Southern in the same game was October 31, 1969, when Jim and John Dawsey each had two goals in a 6-1 win over Florida Presbyterian College (now known as Eckerd). It was the fourth time that season both scored in the same game, and they remain the only brothers to ever do that for the Moccasins.

WHY MOCCASINS?Florida Southern first used the nickname Moccasins in 1926, shortly after the college’s move to Lakeland in 1922. The water moccasin, or cottonmouth, was abundant in the nearby lakes and since the moccasin is one of the fiercest of all snakes, the college adopted the moniker for its athletic teams. A male water moccasin can grow up to 1.8 meters (74 inches) in length, and though its venom is considered relatively mild compared to other poisonous snakes, its bite is still extremely painful.

Did You Know? The Florida Southern men’s soccer program is among the oldest in the state of Florida. The Moccasins began playing intercollegiate soccer in 1957, the same year Jacksonville and Stetson also began their programs. Rollins is the only college in the state to field a varsity team any earlier, with the Tars starting the sport in 1956. However, Florida Southern actually had a club team from 1954-56, and played the Rollins varsity squad to a 2-2 tie in 1956.

Did You Know? Nine Moccasin goalkeepers have recorded an assist while playing in goal, most recently Matt Ward in a 3-1 victory over Saint Leo in 2006. Of that group, Marcus Larsson is the only one to pick up two assists in one game, doing so in a 4-1 win over Webber International on October 23, 1999. No Moccasin has ever scored a goal while wearing a goalkeeper’s jersey, but Tim Moore did have one while playing forward in a game vs. Webber in 1986.

FRESHMAN #19, BORIS SIMEUNOVIC 6-00, Freshman, Midfielder Lutz, Florida Comes to Florida Southern from Sickles High School where he played for coach Tony Calvo… Led the Gryphons to a 23-2-3 record as a senior, with Sickles winning its first district title and advancing to the Class 5A state semifinals before being eliminated in penalty kicks… Paced Sickles with 46 points on 17 goals and 12 assists… Named to the 5A All-State Team, First Team all-conference and all-county as a senior when he was also a team captain for the

Florida Southern’s first intercollegiate soccer team took the field in 1957, coached by Jim Bush (far right with the bowtie). In their inaugural season, the Moccasins went 1-3-2, playing in the Florida Intercollegiate Conference withJacksonville, Rollins and Stetson. They tied Stetson, 1-1, in their first game, and earned their first win on November 2,at the expense of Jacksonville, beating the Dolphins, 3-1. Hernando Clavijo scored the first ever goal for theMoccasins, while Eddie Kalaska (kneeling and wearing #13) scored the first game-winner by snapping a 1-1 tie in thethird quarter against Jacksonville.

One year later, Florida Southern won the first of its five FIC titles. The Moccasins also won the league in 1965, 1966,1967, and 1971.

BILL CURRIE – 1961Bill Currie, Florida Southern’s first soccer All-American, was also the school’s second All-American in any sport, after basketball player Don Tobin had been honored four years earlier. Currie came to Florida Southern from Rochester, New York, and was a three-year letterman for the Moccasins from 1959-61. In each of those seasons he was All-Florida Intercollegiate Conference as the top goalkeeper in the league, and as a junior and senior, he was Florida Southern’s MVP. In 1960, Currie became the first Moccasin goalkeeper to post a shutout when he blanked Rollins and Emory in back-to-back games, and as a senior in 1961, he set a record that still stands today with 201 saves. Since that is the only season in which his save total is available, it’s likely Currie would be first or second on the Mocs’ career list as well.

JOHN HAYES – 1965As a freshman from Sanford, Florida in 1961, John Hayes served as All-American Bill Currie’s backup in goal; and as a sophomore, he took over between the posts on a regular basis. After sitting out a season, Hayes returned to school in 1964, and spent two more years as Florida Southern’s starting goalkeeper. Among his highlights was a 22-save shutout against the University of Miami as a junior that was the Mocs’ first win over the powerful Hurricanes in seven tries. A year later, the Moccasins won the Florida Intercollegiate Conference with an undefeated league record, and Hayes was named to the all-conference team.

BRIAN BAIN – 1967Just as John Hayes took over for Bill Currie and eventually won All-American honors, Brian Bain took over for Hayes and did the same. Bain, however, won the starting job as a freshman and remains the only four-year starting goalkeeper (1966-69) in team history. During his All-American sophomore season, Bain set a school record that stood for 30 years with a 1.20 goals against average, and his career totals of nine shutouts with a 1.82 GAA stood as records for 28 years. He still ranks in the top three of every career goalkeeping category at Florida Southern, though complete save totals are unavailable from that era. Originally from Union, New Jersey, Bain was also a two-time All-State selection while that team was still in effect, and Florida Southern’s 1968 MVP.

JIM DAWSEY – 1969The only Florida Southern field player to earn All-American honors was Jim Dawsey, who played for the Moccasins at the same time as All-American goalkeeper Brian Bain (1966-69). Dawsey was a Lakeland native who made an immediate impact by earning All-Florida Intercollegiate Conference status as a freshman. A four-year starter at forward and three-year captain, Dawsey graduated as the school’s career leader with 28 goals, a figure that still ranks fifth in team history. He also ranks 10th on the career points list, and would certainly be higher if complete assist totals were available. He still remained in the top five until 1996. Dawsey led the Moccasins in goals as a junior, and in goals (11) and points (24) as a senior when he was Florida Southern’s Most Valuable Player.

AHMAD BELFON – Academic All-American (1997, ’98, ’99)Florida Southern soccer’s only Academic All-American, Ahmad Belfon (also known as Junior) was a four-year starting defender for the Moccasins from 1996-99. During that time, Florida Southern had four of the top six defensive seasons in team history, with a total of 24 shutouts and a 1.09 goals against average. Twice during that period, the Mocs had a team goals against average under 1.00, and in 1997 they set school records with 11 shutouts and a 0.62 GAA. In Belfon’s senior year, the Moccasins set another team record by allowing just 8.8 shots per match while going 13-5-2, and allowing more than one goal in only three of their 20 games played. Belfon also scored five goals with five assists in his career, and his 65 career starts are the fourth most by a Moccasin.

Moccasin Hat Tricks Since the men’s soccer program was started in 1957, the Moccasins have had a total of 65 hat tricks (three or more goals in one game), most recently by current Moccasin Givi Kokaia last year at Florida Tech.

Among the 65 hat tricks are a school-record 10 by Alan Grossman from 1971-74. The Mocs’ all-time scoring leader had four as a sophomore, set another school record with five as a junior and added one more as a senior. In four of his hat tricks, Grossman scored at least four goals, including three times as a junior.

Several others have had multiple hat tricks in their careers, including Terry Darby (four from 1963-65); Jim Dawsey (four from 1966-69); Frank Bresk (four from 1990-93); and Chris Crawshaw (three from 1994-97).

Some of the other notable hat trick performances:

• Frank Bresk was the last player to have two hat tricks in one year, doing so in 1993 vs. Palm Beach Atlantic and Clearwater Christian.

• Alan Grossman began the 1973 season with four straight hat tricks, scoring a total of 18 goals in those games. Combined with the final game of 1972, he had five consecutive hat tricks over a two-year span.

• On three occasions the Mocs have had two hat tricks in the same game. The first was Sept. 18, 1973 in a 13-0 win vs. Flagler when Alan Grossman scored six goals and Andy MacKintosh scored three. The second was a 16-0 win over Florida Bible College on Sept. 12, 1987 when Bobby Pineiro and Steve Lose each scored three goals. Most recently it was Paul Sluyter (4) and Peter Andersen (3) in a 13-1 win vs. Southeastern on Sept. 8, 1998.

• Four freshmen have had a hat trick for the Moccasins in their debut, including Andy MacKintosh against Flagler in 1973. Pineiro and Lose each did so in the 1987 win over Florida Bible, and Asa Pepia did it against Bryant in 2002.

• The quickest hat trick was turned in by freshman Cesar Wilen in 1994 vs. Southeastern. His third goal of the night came just 19:37 into the match. Wilen is one of five players to record a hat trick by halftime with Alan Grossman scoring five goals during the first half of a 13-0 win over Flagler in 1973.

• Terry Darby is the only Moccasin with a hat trick in a game Florida Southern lost. On October 2, 1965, he scored all four goals in a 5-4 loss at Emory.

• Only three Moccasins have had a hat trick in a Sunshine State Conference game: Frank Bresk scored three goals in a 4-3 win at Saint Leo on Oct. 23, 1991; Patrik Dandanell scored three times in a 6-1 win vs. Florida Tech on September 21, 2005; and Givi Kokaia, who made Florida Tech the victim again with three goals in last year’s 4-2 victory.

Nathan Garcia is the season record holder in assists for the Moccasins and ranks second on the career list. In 1997, a year before he set the record, the Moccasins won five straight 1-0 games, with Garcia assisting the goal in four of them.

Did You Know? In 1997, Florida Southern played and won five consecutive 1-0 games, and midfielder Nathan Garcia assisted the goal in four of those wins. One of them came against Montevallo, with Tim Cooper scoring the Mocs’ first “Golden Goal” since the NCAA switched to a sudden-death overtime format that season. Overall, the Mocs played a total of seven 1-0 games that year and won all seven en route to a 12-3-2 record.

Did You Know? Steve Jacobs is the only Moccasin in team history to score a goal, or record a point in the first four games of his career. A freshman from Bermuda, Jacobs scored single goals against Emory, Rollins, Stetson and Miami to start the 1962 season, and ended up as the Mocs’ leading scorer that year with seven goals in nine games.

The last Moccasin to score a goal in his first three games was Mike Nance in 1999, though Nance was a sophomore who transferred from the University of South Florida. The last time a freshman did it was 1993, when Patrick Straub began his career with four goals and three assists in his first three collegiate games.

Fastest Goal at the Start of a Match ....................................10/25/77 Seven players have scored goals in the first minute of a match, led by Nick Koumantzelis who scored just 15 seconds into play vs. Eckerd in 1977. The Mocs eventually lost though, 4‐3. Paul Finney is the only other Moccasin to score in the first 30 seconds, notching his goal just 25 seconds into a match against Jacksonville in 1964. The Mocs also lost that game. Pete Schiebel was the last Moccasin with a goal in the first minute, needing only 46 seconds to score against Saint Leo on October 29, 2002. The Moccasins again lost the game, something that’s happened four of the seven times they’ve scored in the game’s opening minute. Oddly enough, the last time the Mocs allowed a goal in the first minute of a game they ended up with a win. It happened in 2009 when Florida Tech’s David Tuft scored 46 seconds after the opening kickoff, but Florida Southern won the game, 3‐1.

That’s one second shy of the NCAA record held by Ian Martin and Josh Dukes of Florida International, set against St. Thomas in 1979.

Shortest Time Between Goals by the Same Player ................ 9/12/87 Okay, so everyone scored in a 16‐0 win vs. Florida Bible College in 1987, but Steve Lose scored back‐to‐back goals just eight seconds apart. He shares the NCAA all‐divisions record with George Moyssidis of Florida International.

Two Penalty Kicks in One Game ............................................ 9/23/89 Penalty kicks really aren’t that unusual, but only once on record in 53 years has a Moccasin converted two of them in one game. That rare feat was accomplished by Mike Bauder in 1989, a junior forward and the Mocs’ leading scorer that year with eight goals and 24 points. In a 2‐2 tie against Florida Atlantic, Bauder tallied both Florida Southern goals from the 12‐yard spot. Each goal tied the game, with the first one coming in the 39

th minute, and the second one coming in the 66

The Founding Father of Florida Southern Soccer, 2007 Hall of Fame Inductee Mohammed Sabie Though he never served as head coach of the men’s soccer team, Mohammed Sabie would have to be considered the patriarch of the Florida Southern soccer program. As a student at Florida Southern in 1954, Sabie was instrumental in organizing a men’s club soccer program, which later reached varsity status in 1957. He also played for the early Moccasins and after his graduation in 1957, took his soccer expertise to Kentucky where he is credited with being one of the founding fathers of soccer in that state. He coached and taught at Morehead State University for 38 years and is a member of that school’s Hall of Fame as well. Sabie was also a coach for the Iraqi national team in the 1968 Olympics. In March of 2007, Sabie became the third person inducted into the Florida Southern Athletic Hall of Fame for his contributions to soccer. He joined Jim Bush, the Moccasin coach from 1957‐80, and Alan Grossman, who played for the Mocs from 1971‐74, and still holds the school’s career goals record. Shortly after his induction into the FSC Athletic Hall of Fame, Sabie passed away in Kentucky at the age of 77. Mohammed Sabie

Jim Bush, Florida Southern Hall of Fame, Class of 2005 Jim Bush spent 30 years at Florida Southern and served as head coach of the Moccasins from their beginning in 1957, until his retirement following the 1980 season. He compiled a career record of 115‐118‐23, won five Florida Intercollegiate Conference titles, and led the Mocs to their only NCAA Tournament appearance in 1971. Bush also coached the Florida Southern men’s tennis team for 27 years (1959‐85) and put together a mark of 283‐209, and the FSC women’s tennis team in 1979 and ‘80 with a record of 33‐16.

Alan Grossman, Florida Southern Hall of Fame, Class of 2006 In 2006, Jim Bush was joined by one of his former players, Alan Grossman, who played at FSC from 1971‐74. He set season records that still stand with 22 goals and 47 points in 1973, and also owns the school record for goals in a match (6), goals in a career (47), and most career hat tricks (10). His career total of 97 points stood as a school record for 31 years before it was broken in 2005. He was the Mocs’ leading scorer three times, including his senior year when he moved to the back line in order to help the defense.

Brian Bain, Florida Southern Hall of Fame, Class of 2010 The most recent inductee from the men’s soccer program is Brian Bain, a 1967 All‐American and the only four‐year starting goalkeeper in team history (1966‐69). Though complete save totals from that era are unavailable, he still ranks in the top three of every career goalkeeping category in the team record book. After his graduation, Bain taught in the Polk County school system for 35 years and was well‐known for his involvement in high school sports, particularly volleyball and wrestling. In 2001, he was inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame.

On October 10, 2000, Trevor Clark’s overtime goal atBarry gave the Moccasins a 3-2 victory and their lastwin against a team ranked #1 in the country.

RECORD NIGHT AT ROLLINS Only once has a Florida Southern soccer match been decided by penalty kicks, and it came in the first round of the 2003 Sunshine State Conference Tournament at Rollins.

Since it was the first time the SSC had staged a postseason tournament since 1981, the Tars would actually have to be considered the defending champions of a sort. Ranked #18 in the country, Rollins was also looking to possibly secure its first trip to the NCAA Tournament in 21 years.

The Tars were 13‐2‐2 overall and seeded third in the SSC Tournament, while the Moccasins were 8‐8‐1, seeded sixth, and looking to end the year on a high note. Statistically, Rollins had the edge for most of the night, but a goal by Pete Schiebel in the 26

th minute had given Florida Southern a 1‐0 lead. It stood up until Ryan Dodds tied the game for Rollins with 11 minutes remaining.

When overtime ended with the game still tied 1‐1, the result was officially a tie, but penalty kicks were used to determine which team would advance to the SSC semi‐finals. With Rollins going first, each team took five penalty kicks, but each went 5‐for‐5, sending the game to sudden death penalty kicks. The first time one team scored and the other didn’t, the game would be over. It took 11 rounds of sudden death PKs for that to happen, and even more amazing was that neither team missed until the very end.

On the Tars’ 16th attempt (the 11th sudden death attempt), Moccasin goalkeeper Clint Harris stopped German Vivas, giving Asa Pepia a chance to decide the game for Florida Southern. Having already made one other penalty kick in the tie‐breaker, Pepia made it 2‐for‐2, bringing the game to a close just over three hours after it began.

Though there are no official records, it’s believed to be the longest game in NCAA Division II history, and matched a 16‐round tie‐breaker by Clarkson (NY) and Plattsburgh State (NY) in the first round of a 1993 Division III Regional Tournament. Clarkson won that one, 11‐10, and it will be nearly impossible for any two teams to equal what Florida Southern and Rollins accomplished by each making 15 in a row before a miss.

In addition to Pepia, the Moccasins also got two PKs from Keith Butler, Pete Schiebel, Clay Roberts, Travis Hobgood, and Panu Purhonen. Four others made their only attempt during the tie‐breaker, all of them during the sudden death portion: Jonathan Streets, Brian Miller, Adam Lemnouni and Doug Hughes. Harris had 11 saves during regulation and overtime before making his biggest one at the end.

Ironically, Rollins’ Chris Cerroni, who made two PKs during the tie‐breaker, bounced one off the left post early in the first half that would have given the Tars a 1‐0 lead.

THE 1971 NCAA SMALL COLLEGE TOURNAMENT Florida Southern’s only trip to the NCAA playoffs happened in 1971, when the Moccasins earned an automatic bid to the NCAA Small College South Regional by winning the Florida Intercollegiate Conference. They got that bid by defeating Rollins 1‐0 in the final game of the regular season when freshman Frank Hanraets scored with three seconds to play in overtime, assisted by Richard Brelsford.

Rollins also received a bid and served as the tournament host, with Loyola (MD) and James Madison completing the field. With each team playing two games, the Mocs lost to Loyola 4‐0 in the opening round, before dropping a 3‐0 decision the next day to James Madison. Loyola won the region title with a 7‐2 win over Rollins.

Did You Know? Since the program began in 1957, Florida Southern has played six scoreless ties in its history. The last occurred on September 3, 2006, when the Moccasins hosted Alabama-Huntsville. Most of the game was played in a downpour, with standing water in several spots on the pitch. The Mocs finally broke through in the first overtime, only to have the goal disallowed off by an offside call. The Moccasins’ other scoreless games were in 1960 vs. Rollins; 1973 at Saint Leo; 1987 at Saint Leo; 1996 vs. Webber; and in 1997 vs. Florida Tech. The Division II record for 0-0 ties in a season is shared by three teams with three, most recently Limestone (SC) in 2006.

THE SUNSHINE STATE CONFERENCE

Founded in 1975, the Sunshine State Conference has risen from a single sport organization to the Division II “Conference of Champions”. Since its inception, the conference has grown steadily in sports played, membership and national prominence. Sunshine State Conference member schools have won recent NCAA national titles (71 total) in baseball,

men’s basketball, men’s and women’s golf, softball, men’s and women’s tennis, men’s and women’s soccer, and

women’s volleyball. The SSC is also nationally recognized in men’s and women’s cross country, women’s rowing and women’s basketball. The SSC sponsors championships in baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s soccer, men’s and women’s tennis, women’s volleyball, softball and women’s rowing. Last year saw three SSC school wins national titles, including the Florida Southern men’s golf team. Did You Know? In addition to the nine current members of the Sunshine State Conference, three others schools have also been part of the conference at one time or another. Two of those schools were among the six charter members when the league was founded on March 16, 1975. Originally known as Florida Tech University, the University of Central Florida left the SSC in the spring of 1984 to move toward Division I status. Three years later, St. Thomas University (originally known as Biscayne College) also left to become an NAIA program. The third former SSC member is the University of North Florida, which joined the league as a provisional member in the fall of 1992, and stayed through the spring of 1997. After a brief stint in the Peach Belt Conference, UNF also made the move to Division I.

Former Florida Southern goalkeeper Clint Harris had 11 saves in the Mocs’ 2003 SSC Tournament game at Rollins. That number still stands as the record for the conference tournament, though it’s since been equaled by Cory Collins of Florida Tech (2006 vs. Tampa) and Jarrod Rennick of Nova SE (2007 vs. Lynn). Since the tournament was resurrected in 2003, only one player has ever had a hat trick, with Rollins’ Chris Cerroni scoring three goals for the Tars in a 3-0 win over Florida Tech in the 2006 semifinals.

Lisa Ball, a 3-time First Team All-American in women’s golf who played on three national championship teams, and Wayne Raath, a 4-time All-American who also played on three national championship teams with the men’s program, were inducted into the SSC Hall of Fame in 2009, the league’s most recent Hall of Fame class. That brings the number of inductees from Florida Southern College to 41. Nine Moccasin representatives were inducted into the inaugural class in 1991-92, and FSC has had at least one inductee in 15 of the 18 classes since the Hall’s inception. Of the 41 inductees, 27 have been student-athletes, while 10 have come from the coaching ranks, and four from administrative and staff positions.

SIDES OF THE MAYOR’S CUP

The Mayor's Cup recognizes competition in six sports for men (soccer, cross country, basketball, golf, tennis and baseball), and eight sports for women (soccer, cross country, basketball, golf, tennis volleyball, softball and rowing). Points in each sport are awarded by the number of schools sponsoring teams in the respective sports. Last year saw Florida Southern finish second to Rollins College on both the men’s side and the women’s side. The Mocs were three points behind the Tars in the men’s race, and two points behind in the women’s. Florida Southern has won the men’s division 11 times and the women's division 10 times, more than any other school in both divisions.

DIRECTIONS TO FSC From Orlando… I-4 West to exit 33. Turn left off exit, and turn right at second stoplight. Continue to major intersection at Memorial Blvd and turn left. Go 1/2 mile to Ingraham Avenue and turn right. Go to McDonald and turn right. Parking lot is on the left, just past Barnett Field. From Orlando Airport… Take 417 South (toll road) to I-4 West and follow directions above. From Tampa/St. Petersburg… Follow I-4 East to Exit 27 (570E, Polk Parkway exit). Go approximately 6.1 miles to Exit 7 (South Florida Avenue - toll: 50 cents). Turn left onto 37N (South Florida Avenue) and go to McDonald Street. Turn right on McDonald and go seven blocks to the campus. Barnett Field is the by the second parking lot on the right. From Palm Beach/Miami… Take Florida Turnpike north to Yeehaw Junction (Highway 60). Take Highway 60 to 98 North in Bartow, and 98 North into Lakeland. Watch for the Grove Park Shopping Plaza (on the left) and turn left at Crystal Lake Drive. Go to Lake Hollingsworth Drive, turn right and go around the lake to Ingraham Avenue. Turn right again, and go to stop sign (McDonald) and turn left. Parking lot will be on the left, just past Barnett Field.

BARNETT FIELD, HOME OF THE MOCCASINS

The Moccasins play all of their home games at Barnett Field, on the campus of Florida Southern College. The field is located

behind Jenkins Field House, home of the Moccasin volleyball and basketball teams, on the corner of Ingraham Avenue and

McDonald Street. Bleacher seating is available on one side of the pitch for approximately 500 fans.

Barnett Field is the only home the Moccasins have ever known since soccer was first played as an intercollegiate sport in

1957. Originally known as Pipkin Field, it was re-christened Barnett Field in 1990, in honor of longtime Florida Southern booster

Hoyt Barnett. Lights were installed (nine polls at the cost of $100,000) in October of 1989, and the Moccasins played their first night game

at Barnett Field in a 5-1, exhibition victory over Polk Community College in 1990. The first regular season night game was on

September 8 of that year, a 2-0 loss to Flagler. The first intercollegiate soccer game at Pipkin/Barnett Field was on October 26, 1957, when the Mocs lost to Rollins College,

3-1. Their first win came one week later on November 2, when they beat the University of Jacksonville, 3-1. Since that first season,

Florida Southern has compiled a 231-172-30 record on its home pitch for a .568 winning percentage.
