SEASON OUTLOOK After having posted double-digit win totals in 10 of the past 12 seasons, Cali-fornia University of Pennsylva-nia will have a vastly different look in 2010. The Vulcans look to replace

each of their top five scorers from last season, a group that includes three All-Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West performers. “We’re optimistic, even though we lost a lot,” said 25th-year head coach Dennis Laskey. “We have quality seniors and juniors ready to step in and leave their mark on our program.” The experience of this team will be in the defensemen and the goalkeepers. Two-thirds of the starting defensemen from a year ago are back as junior Mike Kalas and senior Joe Fried-man return. Kalas has made 42 straight starts to begin his career at Cal U and was named ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District in 2009. Friedman has made 38 starts over the past two seasons for the Vulcans. The top two goalkeepers are also back as Derek Yobbi and Charlie Dagnal return for their senior seasons. Yobbi finished his junior season with a 8-4-0 record and a 1.58 goals- against av-erage (GAA) while Dagnal finished 4-3-0 with a 2.42 GAA. “Both Yobbi and Dagnal are as good as anybody in the conference,” said Laskey. Yobbi is on pace to leave as the program’s all-time leader in saves and GAA. Youth will be served on attack for the Vul-cans as Laskey will turn to several youngsters and newcomers to provide the offense. Return-ers expected to contribute on offense include senior Spencer Crider, junior Brady Sanders and sophomores Ryan Grindle Nemanja Visekruna. “Ryan started a lot of games for us last year and this could be his year to break through. He can score goals,” commented Laskey. Junior Mikey Juricich will be counted on to be a ball-winner in the central midfield and asked to set things up for the offense. Another returner that will be counted on is sophomore Chris Moehler. “Chris is an all-around scorer,” said Laskey. “He can be a goal scorer or an as-sist guy.” A lot of fresh faces will be seen at-tacking for the Vulcans as well, with sever-al newcomers being called upon to con-tribute right away. Gaby Deller-Borgono, “has the ability to score goals,” said Las-

key. James DelGreco helped lead his team to a Pennsylvania state championship game two years in a row, winning once. Chris Hunkele is, “a big strong kid that knows how to play,” be-lieves Laskey. The incoming class also boasts a pair of all-state selections from outside of Penn-sylvania. Russell Bootwright was a second-team all-state selection in Virginia while Kyle Ransom was voted first-team all state by the West Virgin-ia Sportswriters. Rounding out the list is Andrew Sikora who led his high school team in scoring all four years. A familiar face will be joining Laskey on the sideline this year as Emedin Sabic returns to the men’s program after serving as an assistant for the women’s team for the past three sea-sons. Sabic, who played for Laskey at Cal U, has already earned the respect and trust of his mentor, “I have a lot of respect for his knowledge of the game and his ability to coach. He has great methodology in what he does and I respect his opinion. He will have a major influence on the team.” Having a team with so much experience in the back and inexperience up front, Laskey’s philosophy for the 2010 campaign will be slightly different from the past as he says, “We have to play not to give up goals. If you are defending well, you will create opportunities and score.”

Dawson were both inducted into the Cal U Athletic Hall of Fame in 2008. L a s k e y played in the Pennsylvania West Soccer League for more than four decades and was a member of the United States Adult Soccer Association (USASA) National Championship team in 2005. Two years later, he was inducted into the Mid-Mon Valley Sports Hall of Fame. Laskey was a four-year starting defender at Alderson-Broaddus and earned honorable mention from the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WVIAC). Following his time at A-B, he joined the U.S. Navy in 1972 and continued his playing career throughout Europe for the U.S. Navy Phiblant team stationed in the Mediterranean. Laskey, who finished his degree at Cal U after his tour of duty, entered the coaching ranks as head coach at Charleroi High School from 1978-83. He also served as the co-founder and first president of the Mon Valley Youth Soccer Association. He moved to the collegiate game in 1983 working with the Vulcan men’s soccer team on the club level before the program moved to the NCAA level in 1984. He coached Cal U for five seasons, winning three-straight West Penn Intercollegiate Soccer conference titles (1986-88) that included NCAA Division I, II, III and NAIA teams. In 1989, he moved back to the scholastic level coaching Upper St. Clair High School to a pair of WPIAL titles before returning back to Cal U to start the women’s soccer program. Laskey, who holds a master’s degree in Sport Management and a post-baccalaureate degree in athletic administration from Cal U, resides in Charleroi, Pa., with his wife Jeanne. The couple has three children, Deni Lynn, Deiter and Marissa.

The longest tenured California University of Pennsylvania head coach, Dennis Laskey enters his 25th season (20th consecutive) at the helm of the men’s soccer program in 2010. He ranks 18th nationally among active head coach in NCAA Division II in career victories. Laskey has been with the Vulcans for almost the entire 27 years of the program, dating back to the inaugural season of 1984. During his time at Cal U, he holds a 224-208-33 overall record (.517) with five appearances in the PSAC Championship Game and two berths in the NCAA Tournament. Behind an improbable late-season surge in 2008, Cal U won the PSAC West title and claimed the program’s first-ever PSAC Tournament Championship. The Vulcans also garnered a berth to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2004. In addition to his 25 years with the men’s program, Laskey was also instrumental in the creation of the women’s soccer program at Cal U. He served as the first head coach for the women’s program in 1990 and coached both the men’s and women’s soccer teams from 1991-2001. A native of nearby Dunlevy, Pa., he has coached five players that were inducted into the Cal U Athletic Hall of Fame. Nicholas Addlery, who plays professionally, and Audrey

Sabic previously served the last three seasons as an assistant coach with the women’s soccer program Sabic helped lead the Vulcan women’s teams to unprecedented success over the last two seasons, as the program won a combined 31 games after managing only four victories in 2007. Last year, Cal U won its first-ever Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West title and appeared in its first PSAC and NCAA Tournaments. On the national stage, the Vulcans advanced to the NCAA Quarterfinals

after allowing only one goal in their first three t o u r n a m e n t games.

Originally from Bosnia, Sabic is no stranger to men’s soccer in the PSAC after playing

four years for head men’s soccer coach Dennis Laskey from 2003-06. He registered 11 goals and 11 assists, while playing 82 career games (55 starts) for Cal U. During his playing career, the Vulcans compiled 45 victories and reached the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Championship Game three-straight years. As a sophomore in 2004, the Vulcans qualified for the NCAA Tournament for the first time in school history. The following year, Cal U set a school record with 14 wins. Sabic moved to Germany in 1991 and played club soccer in Europe until his family moved to the United States in 1999. He attended Cathedral Prep in Erie, Pa., and helped lead the Ramblers to a state championship in 2001. He was a three-time, first-team all-metro and first-team all-district selection while playing at Prep. Sabic earned his undergraduate degree in business administration from Cal U in 2007 and completed his master’s degree in 2008. He currently holds a “C” license from the United States Soccer Federation (USSF) and a National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) all-regional diploma.

A former head coach at nearby Ringgold High School, Dave Molisee enters his second season working with the California University of Pennsylvania men’s soccer program. While a head coach in the scholastic ranks, Molisee guided the Rams to four-consecutive section championship championships and three section runner-up finishes. In addition to his high school and college experience, Molisee also coaches the Century United Soccer Club team, having served as an

assistant coach and on the junior academy and goalkeeping staffs. He currently holds a “D” license from the United States Soccer Federation (USSF) and a National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) national goalkeeping and advanced regional diploma. A 1997 graduate of Cal U, Molisee currently resides in Monongahela, Pa., with his wife Jennifer and the couple has two sons, David and Joshua.

2009 REVIEW

The Vulcans posted a 12-win season in 2009, marking the 10th time in the last 12 seasons that they have finished with double-digit wins. A year after winning its first-ever PSAC Championship, Cal U finished 12-7-0 overall record and in third place in the PSAC West standings with a 3-5-0 divisional mark. The season was highlighted by a seven-game winning streak, including a victory over nationally-ranked and eventual-PSAC Champion Slippery Rock. Forward Mike Luecke finished his career as one of the most prolific players in program history. In 2009, he led the team and ranked second in the PSAC with 32 points on 13 goals and six assists. For his career, Luecke finished second in school history with 125 points after collecting 52 goals and 21 assists. As a senior, he received all-region honors from both Daktronics and NSCAA, while being named to the All-PSAC West Team for a third-straight season. After playing only two games in 2008 due to injury, senior Felipe Souza tallied 23 points on seven goals and a team-high nine assists. He also led the team with four game-winning goals. Classmate Justin Taucher ranked third on the team with a career-high 20 points and was selected to the All-PSAC West Team. In addition to the veterans on offense, newcomers Chris Moehler, Steve Nese and Nemanja Visekruna all contributed after seeing significant action. A transfer, Nese led all newcomers with 10 points, while freshmen Moehler and Visekruna combined for 15 points. The defense was anchored again by veteran Nick Helbig, who was named a Daktronics Third-Team All-American in 2009. As a senior, he registered six goals with three coming on penalty kicks and helped the Vulcans post four

shutouts. Joining Helbig on the defensive line was sophomore Mike Kalas, who became the first Vulcan since 2005 to be selected to an ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District Team. Kalas is the only player on the team to have started all 42 games over the last two seasons. In addition to Helbig and Kalas, junior Joe Friedman started all 19 games on the back line. In goal, junior Derek Yobbi garnered All-PSAC West honors after posting a 1.58 goals-against average and registering an 8-4-0 record in 16 starts. Yobbi is on pace to finish his career among the all-time leaders in saves, goals-against average and minutes. Fellow junior Charlie Dagnal set a career high in minutes and also earned four victories.

2009 REVIEWACADEMICS Cal U student-athletes posted a banner year in athletic competition during the 2009-10 season, five PSAC West titles, four PSAC crowns and two NCAA regional trophies with nine team and 14 individual appearances in NCAA post-season play. The success continued as Cal U finished second in the final standings of the 2009-10 Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup. In addition to athletic prowess, the Vulcans also excelled in the classroom. A total of 205 Cal U student athletes, representing all sports (fall, winter & spring), were named to the Spring 2010 edition of the Vulcan Athletic Director Honor Roll. For the eighth-straight semester, Cal U athletic programs compiled a cumulative grade-point average of 3.00 or higher. Cal U also featured 16 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District selections highlighted by four Academic All-Americans. To be eligible for the academic all-district honor, student-athletes must maintain a cumulative 3.20 GPA or higher, reached sophomore athletics and academic standing at their institution and participated in at least 50 percent of the team’s games as a starter or an important reserve with legitimate athletic credentials. In addition, a combined 141 student-athletes from Cal U representing all sports were named Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Scholar-Athletes for the 2009-10 academic year. To be eligible for the academic honor, student-athletes must maintain at least a 3.25 cumulative grade-point average (GPA) while competing in an intercollegiate varsity sport. Cal U ranked sixth among the 16-member conference with 141 scholar-athletes. The men’s soccer team had seven players earning PSAC Scholar-Athlete status.

PSAC Originating in 1951 to administer and promote men’s athletics, the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference has evolved into one of the NCAA’s most heralded intercollegiate conferences. The first major step came in 1977, when based on a growing interest, the league reorganized to provide a structure for its women’s programs. Only three years later, lacking a standard competitive division, league voted to reclassify the entire conference to NCAA Division II. The most recent enhancement came during the 2008-09 academic year when the PSAC expanded for the first time in its rich history, adding full-time members Gannon University and Mercyhurst College, and associate member Long Island University-C.W. Post. The membership now consists of 16 full-time institutions and the one associate. All of the league’s full-time members are located within the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, which makes the PSAC the largest one-state conference in the NCAA. The league has also grown to share the distinctions as: The largest conference in Division II, the largest football-playing conference in the NCAA, and, with 23, the conference that sponsors the most championships at the Division II level. Highly competitive on a regional and national level, PSAC schools annually combine to send nearly one-third of its teams into NCAA postseason play. Ultimately, the membership’s success has yielded 43 NCAA team and 238 individual title winners.

While proud of its athletic accomplishments, the league also has evolved into one of Division II’s finest from an academic standpoint. Today, nearly one-third of the PSAC’s estimated 6,200 participants are honored each year as “Scholar-Athletes” for maintaining a grade-point average of 3.25 or better - a total that has nearly doubled since PSAC Scholar-Athletes were first recognized in the mid-1990s. Although all 16 current institutions are members of Division II, eight league schools also compete at

the Division I level in select sports. PSAC schools enroll over 125,000 students and claim over 709,000 alumni, including 482,000 who reside in Pennsylvania. The PSAC is governed by the presidents of the 16 member institutions. It employs a commissioner, an associate, assistant commissioners and a director of media relations at its headquarters in Lock Haven, Pa.

Welcome to California University of Pennsylvania and another exciting season of Vulcan soccer. I am confident that Coach Dennis Laskey, his staff and the players will continue to build upon the men’s soccer tradition and make this a year to remember. This was a year of remarkable achievements at Cal U. In the past 12 months our academic offerings have been strengthened and expanded. Our beautiful campus continues to evolve, and our enrollment continues to grow. Our athletic teams won statewide and regional titles. Cal U finished with an impressive No. 2 national ranking in the final

standings of the 2009-10 Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup. This second place-finish is the highest by a PSAC school since the Directors’ Cup was initiated prior to the 1995-96 academic year. The Vulcans are the only PSAC school to break into the top five of the standings and the only school to post three-straight Top 10 finishes. We are very proud of our student-athletes, coaches and many individuals behind the scenes who are responsible for this magnificent accomplishment. I am particularly proud of our student-athletes who perform well not only on the field of play, but also in the classroom. During the 2009-10 academic year, a total of 205 Cal U student athletes, were named to the Spring 2010 edition of the Vulcan Athletic Director Honor Roll. For the eighth-consecutive semester, Cal U athletic programs compiled a cumulative grade-point average of 3.00 or higher. In addition, a combined 141 student-athletes from Cal U representing all sports (fall, winter and spring) were named PSAC Scholar-Athletes for the 2009-10 academic year. Our athletes have put in hundreds of hours of practice, and their hard work and dedication make them winners regardless of the score. The same can be said of the coaching staff, whose devotion to their sport and their players is an inspiration.

The mission of Cal U is to build character and build careers. While the formal part of the education occurs in classrooms, laboratories, and internship sites, the other part of a college education takes place in residence halls, the Natali Student Union and in various sport venues, such as Roadman Park. Men’s Soccer and our other athletic programs provide students with an experience that helps them to learn and to grow in ways that will benefit them the rest of their lives. Teamwork is important not only on the field, but in the boardroom, the operating room and in the classroom. Many of our alumni who were student-athletes during their time here have distinguished themselves in endeavors far removed from their sport, but they have carried with them the important life lessons they have learned on the field and from their coaches, their teammates, and even their opponents. I hope that you enjoy the 2010 season and that you will support all of these young athletes

enthusiastically.
