The Menomonee Falls School Board was updated July 29on a proposed lease agreement with Providence CapitalNetwork LLC that will allow for an expansion of the student lap-top initiative.

According to Director of Business Services Director JeffGross, the program will be expanded to grades 9 and 10, upfrom the ninth grade which started the program last year. Theagreement will be used to fund the initiative and fund 100 stu-dent laptops at North Middle School.

Gross explained the 100 laptops will enhance testing for

eighth grade students. Superintendent Patricia Greco explainedthe testing is taking capacity out of use of existing labs. She saidthat increasing access to the equipment keeps the focus on theinstruction in the computer labs.

Gross said Providence Capital was the firm selected for thefirst year of the program. This year, Gross requested bids fromthree companies, with two of them submitting proposals.

Weve had really good success with them in the past, soIm really comfortable with them, Gross said.

Gross said the lease agreement will look almost identicalto last year when it was in place for the ninth grade.

Gross said that under the agreement, at the end of threeyears, the district will have the option to put the laptops up forsale to residents, buy them back or sell them to a resaler to aminimum cost of $75.

Board member Scott Ternes added that there has been dis-cussion at the committee level about getting feedback about thefirst year of the program. He said that should be brought back

Lets face it. The Great Recession put a kink in manyAmericans retirement plans. Combine that financial blowwith the general uncertainty regarding Medicare and futurecost of private health insurance.

As a result, more boomers are staying the workforce longer. So what does this mean forndividuals? Along with maintaining a healthy lifestyle, its important that boomers routinely getheir hearing checked-and that they address any hearing loss so it doesnt undermine their efforts onhe job or their quality of life.

Maturing workers should be getting their hearing checked. And if there is hearing loss theyshould discuss with their hearing healthcare provider whether or not hearing aids could help.

When people with even mild hearing loss use hearing aids, they improve their jobperformance, increase their earning potential, enhance their communication skills and improve theirprofessional relationships.

I urge anyone planning to stay in the workforce longer to take that first most critical step tooptimizing your hearing health and enhancing your chances for career success by taking a hearingest. Your hearing health and continued job success are within your control.

(NewsUSA)Grandparents and grandchil-dren have much to learn from one another, andsuch valuable relationships should be cultivated.Oxford University research has shown that

involved grandparents contribute significantlyto better-adjusted grandchildren.

The research suggests that children findunique acceptance in their relationships withgrandparents, which benefits them emotionallyand mentally. The grandparental bond is built oncommunication. In fact, most children studied didnot identify distance as an important factor if com-munication was strong.

Unfortunately, hearing loss is the number-onechallenge to communication. According to theNational Institute on Deafness and OtherCommunication Disorders (NIDCD), age andhearing loss are strongly related30 percent ofseniors from 65 to 74 years old suffer from ahearing disability. For adults 75 years of age or

older, hearing loss jumps to 47 percent."It doesn't take a PhD for my patients to

understand the many costs of hearing loss," saysSreek Cherukuri, MD, a certified ear, nose and

throat physician based in Chicago, Ill.Beyond emotional well-being, even some-

thing simple like taking the grandkids to the poolcan turn dangerous if grandma can't hear possi-ble cries for help. Driving puts the children at riskif the grandparents cannot hear oncoming trafficor car horns.

The NIDCD reports that only one out of everyfive people who needs a hearing aid actuallywears one. This is largely due to the extravagantcost of most hearing aids.

"I found that I saw too many patients withhearing loss going home without a solutionbecause they couldn't afford hearing aid prices,"says Dr. Cherukuri.

Cherukuri's response was to develop inex-

pensive but effective hearing aids. "With today'stechnology, a quality hearing aid shouldn't costmore than a digital camera or iPod," Cherukurisays.

MDHearingAid, found atwww.mdhearingaid.com, isn't just a reliablesource for affordable hearing aids, it's also agood source for expert consumer information.

"You should see a physician and get the besthearing aid you can afford. We offer an excellentchoice for those who cannot afford a customhearing aid." Seniors should enjoy the benefits oftheir ripe age. This includes plenty of quality timewith grandchildren.

The following information was providedy the School District of Menomonee Falls.

More Menomonee Falls students areecoming college ready than ever before.

The high school in 2013 administered ahool record 362 Advanced Placement

AP) exams, nearly 100 more than last yearnd more than any year in school history.

"We have asked students to challengeemselves with the most rigorous schedule

ossible," said Principal Corey Golla.Clearly they are embracing that chal-nge."

On a scale of 1-5, students earned aore of 3 or higher on 80 percent of thests. A 3 indicates college readiness and isnough to earn college credit in some cours-.

The rise of AP exams is one example of

the districts focus on college readiness, including increasing resources for staff tobetter prepare students for college.

"We have invested in teacher profes-sional development so that our teachers arebetter able to deliver college-level course-work. We have also developed opportuni-ties in the summer for AP preparation for ourstudents so that they build capacity to han-dle the rigors of the course," said Dr. Gary

Kiltz, director of Curriculum and Learning. In addition, nearly 30 Falls studentshave been recognized as AP Scholars byearning a 3 or higher on three AP exams.

"These students have clearly committedthemselves to a schedule that will preparethem for success when they leave ourschool," said Golla. "I admire their commit-ment."

A public hearing will be held before theenomonee Falls Plan Commission Aug. 6 at30 p.m. to consider amending an Infill

oning Overlay District. The request is relatedthe redevelopment of two parcels of land

orth of the Appleton Avenue fire station anduth of Main Street.

The Plan Commission meeting will be heldMenomonee Falls Village Hall, W156

    8440 Pilgrim Rd.

According to a village staff report, a newomprehensive strategy for the parcels that iseing developed by Brayton Devco LLC callsr the rehabilitation of a single story com-ercial building at N88 W16683 Appletonve., getting a new tenant for space at N88

W16653 Appleton Ave. and creating a pub-parking lot.In June the Architectural Control Board

pproved a facade renovation plan for theW16683 Appleton Ave. property to accom-

odate Just Kiln' Time, which is planning toove from another location. The staff reportates that the Pink Lemonade salon is alsooposing to relocate to the W16653ppleton Ave. space from another location.e request for a conditional use permit tolow Pink Lemonade to move into the space

is on the commission agenda later in theevening.

"The non-conforming, deteriorated two-story duplex between the new Just Kiln Timeand Pink Lemonade spaces is planned forremoval and the three separate parking lots tothe rear of all the subject buildings would bereconfigured and constructed into a single,40-stall public parking lot. The public parkinglot would work for the benefit all the immedi-

ately adjacent businesses as well as act asadditional public parking for those visiting thedowntown area," the staff report states.

A three lot certified survey map is pro-posed that would separate the parking lot andpedestrian walkway from the two businesses.Brayton Devco is requesting "relaxation" ofunderlying zoning in exchange for a higherlevel of architectural design.

Also on the agenda for the commissionmeeting is a request for a Planned ResidentialDevelopment (PRD) zoning for land east ofTown Line Road and south of the Union Pacificrailroad tracks. An an application has beensubmitted calling for 127 single family lotsand 12 duplex lots.

    Drs. Richard and Bruce Winter

Dear Dr. Winter, Mother is 96 years old and shestarted wearing dentures at about 60. She has no lowerbone left! She has tried denture paste but it is useless.

She eats the paste, gets sick to her stomach and whenshe leaves it out her lower denture bounces like abasketball when trying to eat. She can only drink herfood now and is not a candidate for any surgery. Anysuggestions?

Dear L, I am sorry for your mothers problems. Iwould need to see her existing denture to evaluate thebite, the extensions of the denture acrylic and make suret is fabricated properly to optimize her situation. When

people have no bone left a soft silicone liner may helpo increase the hold of the lower denture and provide

more comfort. We do this by first testing it in tissueconditioner (like a soft band-aid) to see if her biting andchewing can be improved prior to making her a new setof dentures. That way she can see if we can help herbefore undergoing the expense of a new set of dentures.Lastly, I have successfully used mini-implants tostabilize dentures in patients with very little bone as wecan place these in as little as 10 mm of bone. Thesewould greatly help keep the dentures in place and

prevent movement that interferes with her chewing! You can see videos of this on our website.

Dear Dr. Winter, I am a male that has suffered frombulimia for many years since high school wrestlingmade me constantly drop weight for my matches. I amafraid I have permanently damaged my teeth and myfront teeth are chipping and thin. What do you suggest Ido to prevent further tooth destruction and reverse thedamage I have done? I am free from purging for overwo years and now its time to fix myself.

Dear Steve, I applaud you for your courageousbattle with a most troubling and debilitating illness. Ialso appreciate bringing this illness to the attention offellow men, as this disease doesnt just affect women.Bulimia or binging and purging are a subset of Anorexiaand the acid reflux effects of purging can cause damage

to enamel of teeth. I would need to see how muchenamel is gone to discuss treatment options. I willevaluate your remaining enamel, your level ofsensitivity and your bite to determine if you requirecrowns, orthodontics or perhaps only someconservative fillings. It is important to realize that one

major problem of acid erosion is that as the teeth wearand get thin, the opposing teeth super-erupt and moveup onto the worn area. So treating bulimia is not justabout the thinning worn teeth but the new position ofthe opposing teeth. You can see examples of bulimiatreatment on www.winterdental.com

We welcome our readers to call us at 414-464-9021

for a comprehensive new patient appointment or a

    consultation visit.

    Yours for great dental health,
