HEADLICE It has been reported that there are still the odd cases of Head lice found in some students hair. We urge that all parents check their child’s hair on a regular basis and that the whole family is treated. Also washing bed linen etc of those children who have been in contact with these pesky little critters.

Erosion and deposition occur because of the energy of the flow of the water in the river. Erosion is very strong water that is smashing against the bank which makes all the dirt fall into the river. Once the water picks up all the sticks, it moves them down the river. Deposition happens when slow moving water drops of all the sediment because it doesn’t have enough energy. As water travels down the river it moves faster on the outside of a bend and slower on the inside of a bend. On the outside of the bend, the fast-flowing water with energy erodes the banks. On the inside of the river, the slow flowing water with not much energy deposits all of the sediment. Over time the river bends get wider and wider. Rivers are created through erosion, transportation and deposition.

Year 6 and year 3 had fabulous attendance last week with both classes sitting on 96%! Year 10 were here 91% of the time last week on time! Well done year 10. Remember it is important that students are at school on time every day!

AUSTRALIAN INVENTORS this week we look at Henry Sutton who was born in Ballarat, Victoria in 1856. Henry Sutton came up with ideas for many devices that would change the world. However, he did not patent his inventions so many of his creations are not well known. His notable achievements include the telphane, a dynamo, a portable radio, a battery, a torpedo a colour print-ing process a method of using gas and water pipes for signalling, a light globe and 20 different types of tele-phone. For more on Henry Sutton, read pg 10 of the Australia’s Best Inventors on the display shelf in the Li-brary

Health warning to avoid Mosquitoes

The Western NSW and Far West Local Health Networks are warning residents and visitors in western NSW to take extra precautions and protect themselves against mosquitoes following the detection of Murray Valley Encephalitis or MVE in Western NSW. The disease has been detected in sentinel chickens located in the Macquarie Marshes, approximately 100km from the townships of Brewarrina, Walgett, Nyngan and Coonamble.

Sentinel chicken flocks act as a warning system for human infection by being regularly monitored for vi-ruses that mosquitoes can transmit to people and cause illness. NSW Chief Health Officer, Dr Kerry Chant, said the latest detection should serve as an important reminder for people to protect themselves. “Positive findings in chickens are rare in NSW. The important message is to avoid mosquito bites and be alert to any symptoms,” Dr Chant said. “The current area of risk extends in regions west of the Great Dividing Range and is likely to be highest around rivers, wetlands and flooded areas in western NSW and especially along the Murray, Darling, and Paroo rivers and their tributaries.

“The increased risk of human cases is related to increased mosquito breeding related to warm tempera-tures, heavy rainfall and flooding across parts of NSW.”

Associate Professor Tony Brown from the University of Sydney School of Rural Health said Murray Valley Encephalitis or MVE is rare and that there have been no human cases detected since 2008 in NSW. In that instance, MVE was detected in a person who lived near the Macquarie Marches and that person re-covered.

“Most people who contract MVE will not develop symptoms, but it is a serious mosquito-borne disease,” said Dr Brown.

He said in mild cases, MVE symptoms can include fever, headache, nausea and vomiting and muscle aches. In more severe cases symptoms can include neck stiffness, lethargy, drowsiness, confusion, delir-ium, tremors, neurological problems and coma in severe cases.

“People with these symptoms should immediately seek medical assistance,” said Dr Brown. Dr Brown warned that in young children, a fever may be the only early sign of MVE. “Parents concerned about a child with fever, should see their doctor and especially if their child has con-vulsions, drowsiness, floppiness, irritability, poor feeding or general distress,” said Dr Brown. The MVE virus is transmitted by infected mosquitoes which breed in flooded, grassy and swamp areas and around rivers and waterways. The mosquito is especially active around dawn and around sundown, with a peak in the first two hours of the night. CONTINUED NEXT PAGE

Term 1—Week 6

The disease has previously been detected in sentinel chickens in the Victorian towns of Mildura, Robinvale, Kerang and Barmah, but also in Tooleybuc in NSW, near Swan Hill. Dr Brown said the most important message for everyone is to avoid being bitten by mosquitoes. Simple steps to avoid being bitten by mosquitoes include:

When outside cover up as much as possible with light-coloured, loose-fitting clothing and covered footwear.

Use an effective repellent on all exposed skin. Re-apply repellent within a few hours, as protection wears off from perspiration, particularly on hot nights. The best mosquito repellents contain Di-ethyl Toluamide (DEET) or Picaridin.

The stronger the concentration of an insect repellent, the less frequently it will need to be applied to stop mosquito bites. Repellents containing low concentrations of DEET or Picaridin provide shorter periods of protection and need to be reapplied more frequently so it's important to read the product information.

Topical repellents are not recommended for use on children under 3 months. Use of physical barri-ers such as netting of prams, cots and play areas is preferred. Repellents containing less than 10% DEET or Picaridin are safe for older children if applied according instructions. Parents or carers should apply repellent.

Light mosquito coils or use vapourising mats indoors. Devices that use light to attract and electro-cute insects are not effective.

Cover all windows, doors, chimneys, vents and other entrances with insect screens. When camping, use flyscreens on caravans and tents or sleep under mosquito nets.

Mosquitoes also carry other human diseases including Ross River virus and Barmah Forest virus that can cause fever, rash and joint pains.

There is no specific treatment for these viruses so prevention depends on avoiding mosquito bites, es-pecially in the summer and autumn months when infections peak.
