We’ve all heard the true, albeit tired, statement that the only constant is

change. What goes unnoticed, or if recognized too often unspoken, is that renewal is constant as well. The natural world, as well as the human spirit, reminds us of this virtually every day. As this is written, we’re enduring a literal, economic and metaphoric winter. What can give us a point on the horizon to focus upon, a date on the wall calendar to circle, and hope and motivation overall is knowing that there will be a spring.

Many of the books in this catalog are celebrations of life, in thought, in deed, and |very often, in the outdoors. I learned last week that “welcome” is defined as “one whose coming is in accord with another’s will.” Frankly, not only are the blooms and buds and warmer temps of spring welcome, so too are the joys of summer, fall and even winter.

To that end, we salute pretty much any and every activity that leads us to a greater appreciation of and respect for natural won-ders, physical endeavors and a collective karma of goodwill. We aim to best support our staff and authors as we knit our efforts together to help readers get more out of life. Perhaps that sounds a little heady, but we sincerely believe that this is one of the most important ways in which we can contribute; we thrive on this sense of purpose and connection to others.

Enjoy these books – we made them for you.

Myths and Truths about Coyotes What You Need to Know About America’s Most Formidable Predator

CAroL CArTAino

As in any area where little is known and much feared or suspected, bring up the subject of coyotes, and myths and half-truths fly. This book will deflate the myths and illumi-nate and share the truths.

Once just a colorful supporting character of the Old West or children’s cartoons, coyotes are now real-life neighbors to just about every one of us. Every state in the US except Hawaii has them, and they slink around suburbs and cities as well as the countryside.

Coyotes are too big to be cute and cuddly, and they remind us of the wolves we humans went to such trouble to exter-minate or remove from our surroundings. Most of us have heard or read stories, or watched TV accounts, of coyote problems across the country, and many of us have listened to the chilling yips and howls of a coyote pack somewhere right beyond our sight.

The spread of the intelligent, adaptable, and opportunistic coyote across America is perhaps the biggest wildlife suc-cess story of recent years—but not everyone is happy about it. Parents worry that their children may be attacked by a coyote in the backyard or nearby field. Pet owners know that their cats and dogs are likely to be. Hikers and other outdoors enthusiasts who encounter coyotes in the wilds wonder if they are at risk. Sheep and cattle farmers, and even fruit growers, are up in arms about losses to coyotes. Deer hunters fear that the rise of coyotes has meant a reduction in deer in many places. Wildlife experts have noted that where coyotes proliferate, the graceful and beautiful red and grey fox and other animals may be reduced or disappear.

Carol Cartaino has been a book editor for four decades, working with nonfiction authors including Jack Samson of Field & Stream and the editor of Arizona Highways. She lives in Seaman, OH.

F Media campaign to metro papers focused on truths/myths—as suburban backyards become byways for coyotes, there is a news element to their re-emergence

F Outreach to regional Sierra Clubs, hiking/outdoor asso-ciations, and animal support groups

F E-mail blast and materials to schools for student discussion

Wildebeest in a rainstorm Profiles of Our Most Intriguing Adventurers, Conservationists, Shagbags, and Wanderers

Jon BoWerMASTer

Over the last 20 years, Jon Bowermaster has profiled, traveled with, written with and about a huge variety of the world's most interesting environmentalists and explorers, ranging from Bobby Kennedy Jr. to Peter Beard, Winona LaDuke, George Schaller, David Brower, Yvon Chouinard, Doug Tompkins, and more. In Wildebeest in a Rainstorm, he has collected his fascinating profiles of these leaders into a single book that provides a one-of-a-kind look at environmental policy and global exploration.

Jon Bowermaster is the founder of the OCEANS 8 project and has made seven documentary films of his expeditions.

FroM The inTroDuCTion

During the past twenty-plus years, I’ve been privileged to travel the world, often in the company of some of the most high-profile, committed, hell-bent, hot-headed, and more than occasionally wacky characters in the outdoor world: conservationists, adventurers and explor-ers, entrepreneurs, sportsmen, politicos, and scientists. Their unrelenting commitment to accomplishing big things is inspiring, but their eccentricities are electric, too—and, yes, they are all eccentrics. Think about it. Mike Fay walked across the Congo forest armed only with a machete. Will Steger dogsledded 3,741 miles across Antarctica. Doug Tompkins has bought 2.5 million acres of South American forest (and counting) in a struggle to preserve it. Renée Askins fought tooth and nail to bring wolves back to the American West, against armed and sexist opposition. Titouan Lamazou sailed around the world solo faster than anyone had before without stop-ping, carrying premade casts for his arms and legs so that if one were broken he wouldn’t have to stop. These are big thinkers and big doers.

TAMMY York

A new entry in the 60 Hike Within 60 Miles series (more than 150,000 copies sold)

With this new guide, hikers discover many of the local hidden hiking treasures that are in and around Ohio’s most pictur-esque city, located on a historic river at the confluence of three states. Places such as Caldwell Nature Preserve, Mary Gray Bird Sanctuary, and Quiet Trails Nature Preserve offer incredible views, ample wildlife and wildflowers, and a chance to get away from everything and enjoy the simple pleasure of nature. Many of the trails, between three and five miles in length, cover Ohio, Indiana, and Kentucky, and range from family friendly to the more rigorous. While Sharon Woods offers a leisurely, acces-sible paved trail for most of the way, Clifty Falls State Park tests the seasoned hiker’s ability to concentrate on crossing slippery rocks without falling into the stream. Clear maps, simple direc-tions, accurate driving times, and a wealth of trail details make this the perfect companion to a Queen City day hike.

Tammy York is an avid hiker and trained naturalist with over 16 years of field experience. A freelance writer, she specializes in nature, outdoor recreation, and environment. She lives in Cincinnati.

WenDeL WiThroW

A new entry in the Best in Tent Camping series (more than 100,000 sold) details the Lone Star State’s top 50 campgrounds

As with all books in this series, the campgrounds selected for The Best in Tent Camping: Texas had to meet three criteria: they had to be accessible by car but not overrun with RVs; offer great scenery; and be as close as possible to a wilderness experience. Texas, with its extraordinary diversity of ecosystems, made au-thor Wendel Withrow’s search an exciting one. Divided into the state’s major geographical areas, the book is based on the au-thor’s 30 years’ experience in following the back roads of Texas. Along with a detailed profile and useful at-a-glance informa-tion, clear maps show campground layout, individual sites, and key facilities. Driving directions supplemented with GPS-based coordinates for each campground entrance make getting there a snap. Regional maps and a profile numbering system make the book easy to use and enjoy.

Wendel Withrow is the Chair of the Lone Star Chapter of the Sierra Club. Currently researching the Native American tribes of the desert Southwest and the natural wonders located in the sovereign nations of North America’s first citizens, he lives in Dallas.

With trails personally tested by both authors, this guide includes at-a-glance information (length, water required, trail traffic and surface, wheelchair acces-sibility, and more), GPS trailhead coordinates, directions, and clear maps.

Each hike is rated for scenery, difficulty, trail condition, and accessibility for children. In-dividual trail maps, elevation profiles, and GPS trailhead coordinates aid in navigating the myriad of unnamed roads. Featured trails range from easy strolls for the family to bone-crunching vertical ascents for the fearless hiker.

Frozen in Time The Enduring Legacy of the 1961 U.S. Figure Skating Team

First trade paper edition

nikki niChoLS

A poignant account of figure skating’s most tragic event

On February 15, 1961, all 18 members of the U.S. World Fig-ure Skating Team were killed in a plane crash, along with 16 coaches, officials, and family members. Ball Cap nation A Journey Through the World of America’s National Hat

J iM LiLLieForS

Lilliefors’ reporting has been lauded as “Mark Twain-like” by

The New York Times Book Review

As our country grows increasingly diverse and complicated, Americans seek, and occasionally find, a common thread. And, as Jim Lilliefors reveals in his new book, that com-mon thread is what the baseball cap is made of — indeed, what has transformed it into America’s National Hat. As fads go, it’s no longer even a fad, but a part of the national identity that, for better or worse, is a symbol of America. It feeds an illusion that Americans cherish — that despite their differences, and no matter what position they play — when wearing a baseball cap, we’re all part of the same team. Exploring every aspect of caps and their culture — includ-ing the history, manufacturing, and evolution of baseball caps; collecting and caring for caps; cap etiquette; and even cap urban legends — and packed with photos throughout, Ball Cap Nation is a delightful look at a uniquely American phenomenon.

Jim Lilliefors has written about Americana, travel, and the arts for The Washington Post, The Boston Globe, The Miami Herald, and elsewhere. The author of several other books, including High-way 50: Ain’t That America, he lives in Naples, FL.

rollie’s Follies A Hall of Fame Revue of Lists and Lore, Stories and Stats from Baseball’s Most Famous Moustache

roLLie FingerS AnD ChriSToPher riTTer

A lively look back at the career of one of baseball’s best and most charismatic pitchers

In the tradition of the incredibly successful Uncle John’s and Schott’s Miscellany brands, Rollie’s Follies is the first in a series of baseball books that give readers quick stories and stats, nostalgic as well as cutting-edge information. The package is inventive, unique and lively, and the series is supported by rolliesfollies.com, where the brand will receive international attention. Author Rollie Fingers, still one of the most recognizable players ever because of his signature handlebar moustache, will appear on TV and radio to tout this breakthrough book that soon will be as recognizable as the man himself.

Rollie Fingers is one of the most recognizable players in major league history, due to his playful charisma and handlebar mous-tache as much as to his 17-year career with the Oakland A’s, San Diego Padres, and Milwaukee Brewers. He is one of only two relief pitchers in history to have won a Cy Young Award, a league Most Valuable Player Award, and to be enshrined in the Baseball Hall of Fame. He is a popular celebrity for golf tournaments, autograph shows, and baseball fantasy camps, and he currently lives in Las Vegas.

christopher Ritter is an entertainment manager and media consultant, a contributing writer to the pages of Magic Magazine and several Comedy Central Specials and the co-writer for the upcoming Amazing Johnathan autobiography Smoke and Mir-rors. An accomplished public speaker, Mr. Ritter divides his time between Manhattan, Chicago, and Las Vegas.

The Booklover’s guide to the Midwest A Literary Tour

greg hoLDen

The success of Larry Portzline’s Bookstore Tourism shows that interest in visiting literary hot spots is high

With its rich literary tradition, the Midwest provides a wealth of opportunities for bibliophiles to retrace the steps of their favorite writers and characters. The Booklover’s Guide to the Midwest is a treasure map in book form, pointing the way to the heartland’s most interesting literary sites. Walk down the actual Main Street that Sinclair Lewis described in his classic novel, or among the gravestones that inspired Ed-gar Lee Masters’ Spoon River Anthology. See Laura Ingalls Wilder’s “Little House in the Big Woods” and get lost in the very same cave that Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn explored. Visit Petoskey, Michigan, the setting of Hemingway’s Nick Adams stories. Other poets and writers put readers in touch with pond life, sand dune architecture, Native Americans, and the great expanse of the prairie. Descriptions of each state’s sites are arranged so that travelers can drive or walk from place to place with ease.

Greg Holden’s books include Literary Chicago: A Book Lover’s Tour of the Windy City and 1000 Best eBay Success Secrets. He lives in Chicago.

north Pole Tenderfoot DOUG HALL WITH A FOREWORD BY GILBERT M. GROSVENOR

A Rookie Goes on a North Pole Expedition Following in Admiral Peary’s Footsteps

Re-creating Admiral Robert E. Peary’s “last dash” to the North Pole is not a popular trip. For starters, the temperatures (with wind chill) range from –15°F to –62°F, despite the endless sun-light of spring in the Arctic.

So why go? For Doug Hall, it was personal—Admiral Robert E. Peary was his hero. Unlike the instant heroes of pop culture, Peary was the real thing. For twenty-three years, Peary dedicated himself to a single goal: standing on top of the world.

The north Pole ROBERT E. PEARY FOREWORD BY DOUG HALL

The Epic Story of America’s Discovery of the North Pole in 1909

The North Pole recounts the logistical problems of taking an entire Eskimo village, along with hundreds of dogs, on a wooden ice-breaker, the Roosevelt, for an entire winter. The logistics of the journey facing Peary and the crew upon disem-barking are fantastic even today. Hauling tons of supplies to the base camp revealed Peary’s hard-won experience and insight into the supply-chain support needed for his crew to soldier forward into the unknown.
