AWARDS AND DESCRIPTIONS

BOARD OF TRUSTEES AWARD This award is presented to the baccalaureate graduate with the highest overall cumulative grade point average who also has demonstrated a high level of service to the Vaughn community. Minimum grade point average for this award is 3.50.

FIORELLO LAGUARDIA AWARDThis award is presented to a graduate or graduates from the master of science degree program who have attained the highest cumulative grade point averages while demonstrating the professional and civic values that exemplify the mission of Vaughn College. Minimum grade point average for this award is 3.50.

FOUNDERS AWARDSThese awards are presented to graduates from each associate degree program who have attained the highest cumulative grade point average in their programs while demonstrating the professional and civic values that exemplify the mission of Vaughn College. Minimum grade point average for this award is 3.50.

CASEY S. JONES AWARDSThese awards are presented to graduates from each baccalaureate degree program who have attained the highest cumulative grade point average in their programs. Minimum grade point average for this award is 3.50.

ASCH-ROOT ENGINES OF INVENTION SCHOLARSHIPThis scholarship is presented to a bachelor of science degree student in engineering or engineering technology who has attained a minimum 3.0 grade point average. This scholarship seeks to inspire faculty and students to work together on a research project in the fields of science and mathematics.

BESSIE COLEMAN AWARDThis award is presented to an outstanding female graduate who has attained the highest cumulative grade point average while demonstrating the professional and civic values that exemplify the mission of the College. Minimum grade point average for this award is 3.50.

YEAGER AWARDThis award is presented to those students in the fast-track Air Traffic-Collegiate Training Initiative (AT-CTI) program who have attained outstanding academic achievement. It is named in honor of General Charles E. “Chuck” Yeager, who in 1947 became the first pilot to breakthe speed of sound.

ENGINEERING INNOVATION AWARDThis award is presented to a graduate who was an active participantin professional development or competition while at Vaughn and who published or presented a paper on a new and innovative idea at a technical conference. This award seeks to honor students who have investigated innovative research projects in engineering.

STUDENT-ATHLETE OF THE YEAR AWARDThis award is presented to the student who compiles the highest cumulative grade point average while participating in an intercollegiate sport and who also demontrates the values of sportsmanship, team play and leadership.

MOST VALUABLE PLAYER AWARDS These awards are given to those student-athletes whose contributions to their teams are judged to be most important to the teams’ success.

SENIOR ATHLETE AWARDSThese awards are given to Vaughn College student-athletes in the senior year who have contributed significantly to the success of their teams.

NATIONAL RESIDENCE HALL HONORARYThe National Residence Hall Honorary (NRHH) is comprised of the top 1 percent of student leaders on campuses worldwide. NRHH has four pillars that each member can strive to achieve: scholastics, recognition, service and leadership. Graduates are recognized with blue and white cords to be worn at commencement.

SERVICE AWARDSCertificates are presented to graduates, selected by the office of student affairs, for outstanding work in club activities and other special service to Vaughn.

HONOR CORDSGraduates who have completed their degrees with academic honors are attired with gold cords. Students who have completed the Leadership Academy are recognized with burgundy cords.

CONVOCATION SPEAKER

ROBERT McADAMS

Robert McAdams joined Sheltair Aviation Services as general manager of its LaGuardia Airport fixed base operator (FBO) in September 2011. The company provides services for all private aircraft that operate into and out of LaGuardia. The company handles a variety of aircraft from small piston engine aircraft up to and including fighter jets such as the F-18. Donald Trump’s Boeing 757 is a permanent tenant.

While still in high school in 1989, McAdams began working in the quality assurance department of the Trump Shuttle, where he performed audits of Federal Aviation Administration-approved repair stations throughout the country. After leaving the Trump Shuttle in 1994, McAdams started North American Aerospace, an aircraft parts brokerage that eventually became a Federal Aviation Administration Part 145 repair station. He sold the company in 2001.

In 2000, McAdams joined AirTran Airways as general manager for LaGuardia Airport, where he remained until September 2011. While at AirTran, he oversaw the startup and continuing airline operations at Stewart and Westchester County airports. McAdams attended Vaughn College and continued his educationat Western Governors University. He holds a certificate in automotive technology and a repairman certificate for a Part 145 FAA repair station. He has received the FAA’s “Silver Award” for training and its Flight Standards Service Aircraft Maintenance Technician Award. He is a past president of the LaGuardia Airport Kiwanis Club and an active member of the Wings Club. He and his wife Kerri have a daughter, Gianna.
