PRONUNCIATION GUIDE

2009-10 NUMEriCAL rOSTEr

Matt Brown enters his third season as the head coach of the UMKC men’s basketbal l p r o g r a m . B r o w n joined the ‘Roos as the eighth head coach in school his-

tory on April 12, 2007.

In his first two seasons as a head coach, Brown has guided UMKC to an 18-45 overall record and has coached three players to all-Summit League recogni-tion. Former forward Dane Brumagin was a second team all-league honoree and Reggie Hamilton was an all-new-comer team selection in 2007-08, while Brumagin earned an honorable mention all-league nod in 2008-09.

In 2008-09, Brown’s squad picked up a pair of early season victories over Missouri Valley Conference foes Wichita State and Bradley. The win over the Shockers was the first for the program in Wichita and it was the second straight in the series over WSU. Two games later, Brown led his squad to a 73-61 win over Bradley in the CBE Classic. It was the first time since 2001-02 and just the third time in school history that UMKC had defeated consecutive MVC opponents in the same season.

During his first season on the sidelines, Brown guided the ‘Roos to an 11-21 overall record. He secured the first vic-tory of his head coaching career on Nov.

13 with a 79-75 win over Baker. Brown’s squad showed flashes of being a potent offensive team in year one, as the squad scored 105 points at Oakland. In addi-tion, his team was was the most prolific three-point shooting squad in school his-tory, finishing with a record 283 three-point field goals and 739 three-point attempts.

Off the court, Brown’s players have excelled in the classroom as 10 student-athletes have earned academic all-league honors and five student-athletes have been named to the Commissioner’s List of Academic Excellence. In addi-tion, under Brown’s tutelage, Brumagin became the first UMKC basketball stu-dent-athlete to be named a semifinalist for the prestigious Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award.

Brown joined the ‘Roos with an impres-sive resume, as he led teams to the post season in seven of his 10 years as an assis-tant coach. He guided squads to three NCAA Tournament and four National Invitational Tournament (NIT) appear-ances during his stints at Richmond and West Virginia as key member of head coach John Beilein’s staff.

While in Morgantown, Brown helped the Mountaineers advance to their first Big East Tournament Championship game in 2005, and they carried their momentum to the NCAA Tournament Elite Eight. A year later, WVU advanced to the NCAA Sweet 16 with a 22-11 mark and in 2006-07, with a young squad, West Virginia claimed the NIT Championship, finishing the year with a 27-9 overall record.

At WVU, Brown was responsible for the recruitment of student-athletes, as well as serving as the compliance representa-tive for the men’s basketball program. He also oversaw the development of the post players, in addition to serving as a academic mentor to players on the team.

Before moving to West Virginia, Brown served as an assistant coach at the University of Richmond under Beilein from 1997-2002. Their 1997-98 squad posted a 23-8 overall record and secured an NCAA Tournament berth. With the Spiders, Brown led the development of the post players and he oversaw the underclassmen recruiting.

Prior to joining Beilein’s staff, Brown spent three years under the tutelage of Billy Donovan at Marshall University and the University of Florida. Serving as an administrative assistant at both universities, Brown handled mailouts to underclassmen and assisted with the day-to-day operations of both programs.

Brown started his coaching career at his alma mater, Shippensburg University, as a student assistant. He played for the Red Raiders from 1991-93 after transfer-ring from Northern Kentucky University, where he suited up from 1988-90. Brown received his bachelor of arts degree in history from Shippensburg in 1994.

Brown and his wife, Nikki, have six chil-dren, Ally, Gabe, Coen, Cade, Conner and Molly, and they reside in Kansas City, Mo.

Three HBU players are averaging in double digits with forward Andrew Gonzalez pacing the squad with a 16.1 per game clip. Center Mario Flaherty is second on the team with a 15.1 average, while shooting .521 from the floor. He is also pacing the team with 9.1 boards per contest. Former Wichita State guard Wendell Preadom rounds out the double figure scor-ers with a 11.8 average to go along with a team-best 14 steals. Houston Baptist is getting out scored 76.4 to 65.0 this season, while shooting just 38 percent from the floor and 23 percent from long range. The Huskies have held their own on the glass, averaging 40.2 boards per game, but turnovers have been an issue for the squad, as it has 53 more TOs than assists. HBU GAME NOTES• The Huskies are in year three of the transition back to the NCAA from the NAIA ranks. • Head Coach Ron Cottrell is also the Associate Athletics Director at HBU. Before assuming his cur-rent position, Cottrell served as the school’s AD for 15 seasons, where he was a driving force in the school’s transition to the NCAA.• HBU competes as a member of the seven-team Great West Conference along with Chicago State, NJIT, North Dakota, South Dakota, UTPA and Utah Valley.• Guard Wendell Preadom played three seasons at Wichita State before transferring to HBU. During his time with the Shockers, Preadom was a teammate of UMKC graduate assistant Ryan Martin.

THE SERIESSaturday’s game will be the first meeting in the series between UMKC and Houston Baptist.

QUICK HITTERS• Alex Bazzell opened his collegiate career by playing 108 minutes before committing his first turnover. Bazzell now has a 5.5-to-1 assist-to-turnover ratio (22-4), which is tops in the league and the nation.• UMKC shot a season-low .347 (17-49) from the floor against Wichita State. The squad also was just 2-of-9 from long range, which are also season lows. The ‘Roos also had just five assists on the 17 field goals.• The ‘Roos allowed their first dunk of the season when WSU’s Garrett Stutz threw one down late in the sec-ond half on Wednesday night. In contrast, UMKC has eight dunks on the season.• Junior Bakari Lewis grabbed a career-high seven boards against the Shockers. He is the first player not named Spencer Johnson or LaTreze Mushatt to lead the team in rebounding this season.• UMKC had four players reach double digits in the road win at Centenary. The squad is now 2-0 when four players reach double figures.• The ‘Roos are shooting .453 from the floor and .317 from long range at home and .433 from the field and .308 from long range on the road. • UMKC is struggling from the free throw line this season, as it is shooting .640 (110-172). Opponents have had a higher free throw percentage in 7-of-8 games on the year and they have attempted more free

The squad, however, has 35 turnovers in the last two games.• UMKC has posted a 2-2 record on the road this season, as it earned the all important split in its first league weekend. Last year, the squad went 3-13 on the road and it was 5-26 away from KC the last two seasons.• Junior Spencer Johnson has made 31 consecutive starts and has started 38 of the last 39 contests.

A HOMECOMINGJunior Jay Couisnard will be returning home on Saturday when the ‘Roos face off against Houston Baptist. The forward played prep ball at Yates High School as a junior and senior after playing his first two years at Westbury Christian High School.

MUSHATT FINALLY BREAKS THROUGHAfter flirting with double-doubles numerous times in his collegiate career, sophomore LaTreze Mushatt finally broke through with his first career double-double when he finished with 17 points and 10 rebounds at Centenary. The forward made 7-of-14 shot attempts in the game and five of his boards came on the offensive glass. The Michigan native is the first ‘Roo player to tally a double-double this season. Mushatt has reached double digits in six games this season and is second on the team with a 12.9 scor-ing average. He is also fifth in the league with a .460 field goal percentage on the season.

Over the past three games, the guard is shooting 75 percent from the floor on 15-of-20 shooting, while averaging 12.3 points per contest.

Couisnard’s first where he didn’t reach double digits this season. Couisnard is leading the team with a 13.1 scoring average, while shoot-ing .400 (38-95) from the field.

PRODUCTIVE FRESHMAN MINUTESFreshmen Kirk Korver and Fred Chatmon have been providing the ‘Roos with productive minutes early in the 2009-10 season. The duo have combined to score a total of 69 points, which translates into 8.6 points per contest. Korver has scored eight or more points in four contests, which includes a 12-point outing in his debut against Truman State. Chatmon, meanwhile, has scored in all 6-of-7 games in which he’s appeared, which includes an eight-point outing against TSU.

DEFENSIVE INTENSITYThe coaches have been preaching defense all season and the effort is pay-ing off statistically, as the ‘Roos have the top scoring defense in The Summit League. UMKC is giving up 63.8 points per game on the year. In the opener, UMKC’s defense limited Truman State to a total of just 33 points, which is the second fewest points allowed in a single game in school history (William Jewell - 29 pts. - 11/21/99).

QUICK HANDSUMKC has three games this season with 10 or more steals to give it a total of 62 steals (7.8 p/game) on the year. The 7.8 steals per game are the third most in The Summit League this season. Individually, five ‘Roo players have five or more swipes with LaTreze Mushatt leading the team and league with 19 (2.4 p/game).

NEARLY HALF WAY TO 1,000Junior Spencer Johnson is approaching the 500-point mark for his career in Blue and Gold. The forward currently has 457 points in 69 career games for the ‘Roos. This is remarkable considering Johnson scored a grand total of 54 points during his freshman season in Kansas City.

IN NEED OF A TUNE-UPAfter allowing its opponents to shoot just 33 percent from the floor in the two wins to open the season, UMKC’s opposition has been scorching the nets in the last five contests. In the last five games, opponents have been shooting a blistering .532 (148-278) from the field and .406 (26-64) from long range. The ‘Roos are 2-4 in these six contests.

A KORVER DEBUTFreshman Kirk Korver opened his UMKC career in grand fashion by finishing with 12 points on 5-of-7 shooting in the win over Truman State on Nov. 14. In the first half alone, the center was a perfect 4-of-4 from the floor en route to 10 points in his first 20 minutes of collegiate basketball. Kirk’s performance is the top single game output among the Korver brothers in their collegiate debuts. Kyle and Kaleb, both of whom played at Creighton, scored two points apiece in wins over Mississippi Valley State and DePaul, respectively, while Klayton (Drake) netted three points in a victory over Simpson in 2003.

TEAM CAPTAINSThe Kangaroos have a trio of captains for the 2009-10 season. Juniors Spencer Johnson and Jay Couisnard and sophomore LaTreze Mushatt will don the captain titles this season. Couisnard assumes the leadership role despite not having played a single minute in UMKC Blue and Gold.

YOUNG SQUADUMKC’s roster of 15 players includes five freshmen, five sophomores and five juniors. The freshmen are Alex Bazzell, Fred Chatmon, Kirk Korver, Max Rockmann and Aaron Young. The sophomores are Dustin Dibble, Michael Gholston, Jr., Patrick Inyard, Trey McKinney-Jones and LaTreze Mushatt. Gholston, Jr. is in his first year at UMKC after attending State Fair Community College in Sedalia, Mo., last season.

HOME SWEET SWINNEYThe Kangaroos will play a total of 14 home games during the regular season with five games being contested on campus at Swinney Recreation Center. It will be the most home games at SRC since the pre-Division I era.

THEY’RE SOPHS, BUT LIKE UPPERCLASSMENIn the roster they are listed as sophomores, but LaTreze Mushatt, Trey McKinney-Jones and Dustin Dibble saw more action than your typical fresh-men in 2008-09. Mushatt and McKinney-Jones played in all 31 games for the ‘Roos with the duo making 25 and 13 starts, respectively. Dibble, meanwhile, earned the starting nod in 12 games as a newcomer a season ago.

RAINING THREESUMKC has made at least one three-point basket in 284 consecutive regular season or tournament games dating back to Jan. 22, 2000.

SPENCE BACK AS TEAM VETJunior Spencer Johnson returns to the UMKC line-up after being one of the team’s most consistent players in 2008-09. The forward, who started 30-of-31 games, reached double figures in 14 contests and had seven games with 10 or more rebounds. For the year, Johnson averaged 10.7 points and 6.6 rebounds, while pulling down a total of 205 boards. The figure was the eighth most in a single season in school history.

EVANSVILLE TRANSFER Junior Jay Couisnard will be a welcomed addition to the UMKC front court this season after sitting out the 2008-09 season due to NCAA Division I transfer regulations. The Houston, Texas, native will provide the ‘Roos with an strong, athletic player at the forward position with a knack for being a defensive stopper. Prior to transferring to UMKC, Couisnard played in 61 games with 34 starts in two seasons at the University of Evansville in the Missouri Valley Conference.

FORMER SHOCKER RETURNS HOMEFormer Wichita State player and Kansas City, Mo., native Reggie Chamberlain transferred to UMKC in the offseason. The 6-0 guard, who averaged 3.4 points per game for the Shockers, will have to sit out the 2009-10 season due to NCAA Division I transfer regulations.

ROCKMANN OUT UNTIL SECOND SEMESTERFreshman forward Max Rockmann will be out of action until the second semester for the ‘Roos due to NCAA rules and regulations regarding amateur-ism. The Germany native came to UMKC after playing for the Alba Berlin 2 team last season.

YEP, IT’S THE SAME KORVERThe name sound familiar? It should, as UMKC freshman Kirk Korver is the fourth son of Kevin and Laine to suit up the sneakers to play Division I basketball. Oldest brother Kyle was an all-America selection at Creighton, where he played from 1999-2003, and is currently a member of the NBA’s Utah Jazz. Klayton played at Drake from 2003-08, where he was one of the most prolific three-point shooters in school history, and Kaleb is currently a junior on the Creighton basketball team. Basketball is in the blood for the Korver family as mother, Laine, once scored 74 points in a single game in high school.

ON THE TUBEThe ‘Roos will have at least 14 games televised on Metro Sports during the 2009-10 season. In addi-tion, UMKC’s games at North Dakota (Fox College Sports) and at Nebraska (Fox Sports Midwest) will also be televised.

UMKC SCHEDULE NOTES• The ‘Roos will face five squads that qualified for post season play in 2008-09 in Missouri, Nebraska (NIT), Wichita State (CBI), North Dakota State (NCAA) and Oakland (CIT). Missouri had the most successful season in advancing to the NCAA Elite Eight.• UMKC will play a total of 15 home games with six being contested on campus at the Swinney Recreation Center. The remaining nine home dates will be played at historic Municipal Auditorium.• The squad will play games in 11 different states in 2009-10.• The ‘Roos will play two fellow Division I institu-tions from the state of Missouri. UMKC will play at Saint Louis on Dec. 22 before playing at Missouri on Dec. 30. The meeting with the Billikens is the first in the series since 1999, while the meeting against the Tigers is just the third game in school history.

NEW FACES ON THE BENCHCoach Brown brought in two new faces to join his staff during the offseason. Stephen Brough joined the program as an assistant coach after spending the past six seasons at Baylor University as the Director of Basketball Operations. Former Southwestern College head coach Doug Hall, meanwhile, was hired as UMKC’s Director of Basketball Operations.
