in Memphis”. I beg to differ! The

division of Parks and Neighbor-

hoods is proud to provide a litany

of diverse programming that meets

the needs of almost any resident.

From the avid athlete to the music

enthusiast, we offer something

for everyone. This newsletter is

dedicated to providing you with a

guide to our recreational programs

during the summer months.

Our summer programs and initiatives are created to provide leisure activities for all - big and small. Many of the programs

are free and we invite you to explore and enjoy the public amenities our great city has to offer. Treat your kids to our summer

camps, prevent brain drain by frequenting our public libraries, beat the heat and take a dip in our pools or take up the game of

golf at our municipal courses.

driven programming and excellent customer service.

nutrition. “Central Defense is thrilled to once again lend support to the city’s summer camp program,” said Ken Moody, Director

of Community Relations at CDS. “We understand how important it is for children to have a safe place to go during the summer

where they can be engaged and have access to quality programs.” This is the second year for the partnership between CDS and

the City of Memphis, and the donation will positively impact ten centers in all geographic areas of the city.

ShelbyFit provides access to the Division of Parks and Neighborhoods events and outdoor exercise information opportunities to all Mem-phians through easy-to-find information and so-cially connected activity time tracking. Users can log progress toward a weekly goal and share successes via Twitter and Facebook.

The Memphis area is almost always ranked as an unhealthy metro area, with everything from type-two diabetes, heart disease, and obesity. A recent report rated Tennessee as the second highest state in the country in obesity.

People who do not exercise regularly are much more likely to develop heart disease or have a stroke. Exercise is one of the best ways to pre-vent cardiovascular disease.

Moderate activities such as walking or gar-dening for at least 30 minutes on most days can improve your heart health, according to the American Heart Association.

Part of what can help you reach your wellness goals is the free ShelbyFit app, produced by Baptist Memorial Health Care and Shelby Farms Park.

With the app, users can

• Find trail and recreation in formation for City of Memphis parks, Shelby Farms and other parks in the county • Track walking, cycling, and running trails with routes and distances• Set goals, log your weekly progress, and post your up dates to Facebook and Twitter• See a calendar of local races and events • Get updates on free commu nity health fairs, resources• Get healthy lifestyle tips, in cluding diet and nutrition

The app can help you and your family get moving. Baptist has also included medical articles and resources for users to quickly

reference.

NO KILL FOR JUST ONE DAY Nationwide Campaign to create a No Kill Nation on June 11, 2013

Memphis Animal Services (MAS) joined animal shelters across the nation by pledg-

ing to suspend euthanasia of healthy and treatable animals on June 11, 2013. MAS

also hosted adoption events and put its best paw forward by encouraging residents to

open their hearts and homes and adopt.

Interim MAS Administrator James Rogers

said, “Although it was just for one day, this

allowed us to heighten community out-

reach by reaching out to citizens, rescue

groups and other area stakeholders to

help increase the adoption rate in obser-

vance of this day.”

Memphis & Shelby County Office of Re-Entry

By: Christina M. McClain

Given the huge numbers of ex-offenders mak-ing the transition from prison to the community, it is understood that virtually all ex-offenders will re-enter the community at some point. In the in-terest of public safety, the ex-offender’s re-entry should be anticipated and carefully planned to cre-ate a seamless and less stressful transition into the community.

A clearer focus on the barriers to successful re-entry has sparked public-private partnerships to address the basic needs of offenders more effec-tively during their transition to the community. These needs might include government issued identifica-tion, access to eligible benefits or reinstatement of benefits, stable housing, primary and behavior health care, family reunifica-tion, employment, transportation, and other informal networks of pro-social support.

The Second Chance Program was a private/public partnership between the City of Memphis and local businesses designed to connect ex-offenders who are willing to work with employers who are willing to hire them. The Second Chance Program has evolved into the Office of Re-Entry that continues to provide services to ex-offenders who aspire to successfully re-enter into the Memphis/ Shelby County community as a means to reduce recidivism.

Memphis & Shelby County Office of Re-Entry is a collaborative effort to aide ex-offenders with the tools necessary to ensure their successful community re-entry with family, employment and education. The office is a collaboration of three government entities: Shelby County Division of Corrections’ Re-Entry program, City of Memphis Second Chance Program and Tennessee Board of Probation and Parole.

The Office of Re-Entry collaboration serves as a “one-stop” interactive resource center providing services amongst three agen-cies include case management, life-coaching, job training and job placement will create a lasting change for the individual and ultimately for our community.

The Office of Re-Entry’s case management approach occurs continuously during three phases:

• The institutional phase—the period of incarceration.• The release phase—the months just before and just after release.• The community phase—the period after an offender re-enters and stabilizes in the community through supervision, discharge from supervision, and beyond.

Ex-offenders are identified through an empirically valid assessment instrument to identify their risks and needs that can be associated with the risk to re-offend. When those risks and needs are addressed through a case management approach, the risk to reoffend can be reduced.

Traditionally, institutional counselors, case managers, or parole officers may have primary responsibility for an offender;however, the Office of Re-Entry uses a dual supervision/case management approach pairing a case manager with a District 7 Parole Officers with the offender prior to his/her release to ease the transition into the community. Parole officers at the Office of Re-Entry make field contacts with ex-offenders, their families, employers, law enforcement officials, and community assistance agencies by explaining the conditions of probation and parole through supervision and monitoring the ex-offender adheres to these conditions. In addition, DNA collections, drug and alcohol screenings are administered; complete arrest checks and investigation on ex-offenders are completed monthly or bi-monthly.

Summer Reading Club Plus YOU Equals Fun for All Ages

By: Marcey Evans

Join the club! Everyone is invited to join the Summer Read-ing Club 2013 at any Memphis Public Library location. From June 1 – July 27, children, teens, and adults can cash in on the benefits of reading.

“It’s free, it’s fun, and it’s easy,” said Mary Seratt, Library youth services coordinator and event organizer. “Participants can win prizes for doing something that’s free, fun, and easy!”

In addition to winning prizes, youthful readers can avoid the summer slump as they “Dig into Reading” – the children’s theme for this year’s event. “Non-readers can lose between two and three months of progress over the summer,” Se-ratt explained. “That means teachers have to spend time re-teaching skills students learned before the break, instead of covering new material.”

Humanities manager and teen coordinator Everna Andrews said teens can get “Beneath the Surface” during Summer Reading too. “Reading is empowering,” she said. It provides a three-in-one experience, allowing teens to be the student, the teacher, and the master by using their eyes and minds.

Reading is like money in the bank and in your pockets too,” Andrews said.

But, Summer Reading isn’t just for kids and teens. Adults Services Coordinator Wang-Ying Glasgow said adults are encouraged to make “Groundbreaking Reads” throughout the summer also. “Summer Reading is for everyone,” Glas-gow stressed. “We want to encourage lifelong learning and to foster a love for reading among all ages. Parents, grand-parents, aunts, and uncles serve as role models for young people in our community, so we want adults to set a positive example,” she said. “We encourage adults to start reading and to get the incentives that come with it – not just (Summer Reading) prizes but the enrichment to life overall.”

To participate in Summer Reading Club 2013, Library cus-tomers can visit their local Library branch to sign up or reg-ister online at www.memphislibrary.org. Each week, read-ers log the number of books or hours they’ve read and win prizes. For every 10 books or 10 hours read, participants’ names will be entered into a drawing for a grand prize at the summer’s end.

For more details on Summer Reading Club, call (901) 415-2700. Happy reading!
