NCKU 1977-1979 Unforgettable Years!

description

I was a Fulbright Professor 1977-1979 at National Cheng Kung University in Taiwan. I taught Linguistics and Drama, mainly to one class of students during their Sophomore and Junior years. They're having their 30th reunion now, so I made this PPT for them to show. I wish I could be there!

Dear Mom, The chairman asked me if I would be willing to teach

an extra 3 hour linguistics class at night because the teacher is leaving. There is also a linguistics class in the day schedule, but I already have too many classes in the day schedule. If I can get somebody else to teach the Engineering conversation class, I could teach the linguistics class to my favorite sophomores! I’m really excited! They really are my good buddies.

Dear Mom,

I taught my first linguistics class today, and it was great! The students had written “Welcome our dear teacher, Miss Mickens” on the blackboard for me. I loved it, and they seem really happy to have me teach. When I needed example sentences, I used some from the play we are practicing or from our conversation. I have almost all the students in at least one other class. They’re great.

Remember the theater?Remember the theater?

We usually used the stage, but we did “The Importance of Being Earnest” in the center of the theater.

(Sorry for the bad colors! These are really old!)

The Importance of Being Earnest

Page 27: Memories of my friends at NCKU

March 10, 1978 Our practices for “The Importance of being Earnest” are going well. We’re going to do it in a “theater in the round” style. It’ll be lots of fun, I think. In the front of every classroom are platforms for the teacher to stand on, so we’re going to borrow those and put them in the middle of the theater for our stage.

After practicing so much, the final play was excellent!

We had some fun at my house… parties, singing,

hanging out.

March 31Tonight after the last performance of Earnest, I’m having a cast party for the whole class! I made a cake and a pie, and I have some vegetables and dip. The students have done such a good job and worked so hard! I want to reward them with a nice party.

Dear Mom,

Tomorrow at 5:50 a.m. (!) the sophomores and I are taking off on a 3-day trip. It was supposed to be a 4-day trip, but not enough signed up. So it’ll be 3-days to Mt. Ali. It should be fun.

Page 43: Memories of my friends at NCKU

And then there was this trip…

“It’s just a little hike,” you told me. “Please, come with us.”

Page 44: Memories of my friends at NCKU

Dear Mom, Our weekend trip was lots of fun, but I am sore

today! We left Tainan Friday morning by train, went to another town, then took another train up the mountains.

We played a spelling game on the train. When we got to the end of that train, we had lunch and then hiked about 3 miles up and down (mostly up).

And it was pouring rain! The roads were mud, the rocks were slippery, and I fell down often enough that 2 guys assigned themselves to walk with me, holding me up.

Page 45: Memories of my friends at NCKU
Page 46: Memories of my friends at NCKU

I felt like a queen with my crown!

Were we the first to play frisbee up there?

Page 47: Memories of my friends at NCKU

At the lodge, we rested, ate dinner, then had a little party. No flush toilets, but good hot food. The girls’ sleeping room was just one large room with mats on the floor.

The next day we were supposed to hike to another lodge, but the river was too deep because of the rain, so we couldn’t. I was happy about that. We hiked around, but we didn’t have to carry all our bags.

Page 48: Memories of my friends at NCKU

We hiked to a tiny cave…

Page 49: Memories of my friends at NCKU

…and to a waterfall

Page 50: Memories of my friends at NCKU

It stopped raining, and we hiked singing, “Sweet Low, Sweet Chariot,” and “Yellow Submarine.” It was so fun!

Also I brought my frisbee, so we played with that at the lodge.

In the evening, we sat around and sang songs and put on skits. So much fun. I haven’t laughed so much in a long time!

The last day we got up early to start back. We hiked to a waterfall where we ate lunch. Then we took the two trains back home by 6:00 p.m. I’m SOOOO tired!

The last day was rainy.

It wasn’t all “school work,” with a little help from my friends.

Remember Carlois & Peggy?

Thanks for the memories!

Maybe I can come to your next reunion!
