Building on a Tradition of SuccessSINCE 1952, Memorial Hospital has been filling a need — quality healthcare that is close to home. Over the years, the community has evolved, so have the services provided by Memorial.

Memorial has a strong Board of Trustees made up of dedicated community leaders and a highly qualified administrative team with decades of executive leadership. For the last ten years, they have made key strategic decisions, placing the hospital in a position of strength, able to adapt to the changing healthcare needs of the community. These decisions have led to a combination of projects, partnerships, and added services.

Meet the Challenges of the FutureCommunity hospitals are faced with the challenge of providing high quality care on shrinking profit margins, through aging facilities. Competition from large health systems and decreasing numbers of hospital admissions have resulted in the closing of many of Memorial’s counterparts, while others are absorbed by larger systems.

Memorial has faced the same challenges, but has forged a path to success during the past 15 years. Through forward-thinking, fiercely independent leadership, Memorial Health has bucked national trends and established an impressive record of growth.

Privacy & Comfort ConcernsTHE MOST SIGNIFICANT ISSUE impacting patient comfort is the lack of privacy. Patients, staff, and visitors often encounter one another in the “long hallway”, causing emotional discomfort for patients who are already feeling vulnerable. The use of shared, dormitory-style showers is another major issue that causes dissatisfaction with patients actively considering their healthcare options.

Navigation is also a big challenge as patients and visitors consider which of the 13 entrances to use.

In addition to privacy and patient flow, there are very real functional issues. Medical advances have far outpaced the original 1952 facility — despite numerous additions and renovations. Electrical, heating, cooling and mechanical capabilities are no longer able to keep up. The original designers could not have conceived of the support required for modern hospital technology such as CT scanners and advanced digital X-ray equipment.

Anyone who has owned an older home knows the challenges of aging plumbing, wiring and infrastructure. Those challenges are multiplied exponentially when dealing with a hospital designed 70 years ago to support a vastly different care model to a significantly smaller population.

Memorial must renew its infrastructure to run more efficiently and provide the privacy and comfort patients deserve. The Memorial 2020 project will provide state-of-the-art facilities to match the high-quality care delivered by the Memorial team each and every day.

MEMORIAL 2020The Memorial 2020 project will MODERNIZE THE PATIENT EXPERIENCE by building new inpatient and outpatient pavilions. The community deserves the comfort, convenience and efficiency that a modernization and renovation project will provide.

INPATIENTInpatients will enjoy comfortable, modern, state-of-the-art hospital rooms with full, private bathrooms. Memorial 2020 will replace all existing rooms except those in Obstetrics and the Nursery with 36 brand-new, multi-purpose patient rooms as well as 12 shelled-in rooms ready for future expansion. Rather than adding cost, this will enhance savings by reducing the number of rooms and cutting the heavy maintenance costs associated with our aging facilities.

The new inpatient pavilion will consist of four levels:

• Basement – Information Technology, Plant Operations and other support services

• First Floor – Public space with dedicated main entrance, spacious lobby, conference areas, retail shop, cafeteria, and a Mobile Meals preparation area

• Second & Third Floors – New, private patient rooms including rooms for hospice and physical therapy

The new patient rooms will have the flexibility to meet a variety of clinical needs and reduce the likelihood of expensive remodel projects in the future. Additionally, more critical care patients can be cared for at a given time, decreasing the need for transfers to other facilities.

THERE’S MOREOne additional positive side effect of the facility enhancement is that Memorial 2020 will help draw new physicians to practice here, making it easier to add new specialties as community needs evolve.

Memorial 2020 will help keep local patients local by providing a modern patient experience that diminishes outmigration to other healthcare facilities. This will strengthen Memorial Health’s financial position and have a corresponding virtuous benefit on the community.

OUTPATIENTA new outpatient pavilion will provide space for specialty providers and a dedicated patient drop-off area. It will be a hub of activity with relocated services including the Wellness Center, Specialty Care Center, Medication Therapies Clinic, Occupational Therapy registration and lab draw.

Though details are not yet complete, an expansion of oncology services is in the works, too, including increased chemotherapy space designed in a more communal setting for patient comfort.

In this new outpatient area, patient registration and access to services will see vast improvements and greater levels of privacy.

InvestmentMemorial 2020 will be the capstone of a decade’s worth of work, growth, and development. The investment to realize this vision is $50 million and will be met through a combination of cash, bonds, and charitable contributions.

No tax dollars will be used to fund the project. While Memorial Health is county-owned it does not receive any tax dollars for operations or capital projects and has not for decades.”

Memorial 2020 Campaign & Ways to GiveTO HELP COMPLETE THE MEMORIAL 2020 PROJECT, hospital and community leaders have launched the Memorial 2020 campaign to secure $4 million in philanthropic support, which is 8% of the project’s cost — matching what our founders did in current dollars.

Charitable contributions will ensure Memorial’s debt remains within prudent limits while simultaneously aiding the hospital in its effort to receive bond funding. When a community financially supports its local hospital, investors view that as a probable sign of success.

The Time is NowMEMORIAL HEALTH OPENED IN 1952 through $300,000 in contributions from the community. Another $300,000 was received in matching grants. The generosity of these leaders ensured the right care was available for area residents – particularly WWII veterans. In today’s dollars, their support would be over $4 million. That investment has provided for local healthcare for nearly 65 years. It’s time for all of us to step forward to provide that assurance to the next many generations.
