Real GrandsonsAs of 2012 all those who are Real Grandsons of a Confederate Soldier are authorized to be recognized and wear the pictured medal.

The Bee Camp has the following Real Grandsons:

SCV War Service Medal

Purpose: The War Service Medal is to honor members who have served in our nation's military service during wartime.

Eligibility: SCV members who served honorably for at least 90 days during the war-service periods defined in US Department of Defense directives and American Legion guidelines. Eligible service positions are the same as those for the National Defense Service Medal. The eligible dates and war-service periods are subject to change, so individuals requesting these medals should check with IHQ for the latest approved dates, or check the American Legion website at www.legion.org. At the time of publication of this booklet, the approved service periods and dates were:

April 6, 1917 to November 11, 1918 (World War I)

December 7, 1941 to December 31, 1946 (World War II)

June 25, 1950 to January 31, 1955 (Korean War)

February 28, 1961 to May 7, 1975 (Vietnam War)

Wayne Jones Distinguished Service Medal – 2013 Commander Wayne Jones is a serving staff officer of the SC Division and has provided vital and unquestionable support to the Division Commander during the past year.  Having many years of longevity in the Sons of Confederate Veterans he has served dutifully and with sincere dedication to his assigned posts.  In particular, Commander Jones has devoted an inordinate amount of personal time and energy into the development of the SC Division business and communications platform which, in time, will be instrumental in establishing a more secure and permanent structure to our organization.  Submitted by,  Mark A. Distinguished Service Medal David Fogle 2012

David Fogle has shown outstanding dedication to duty and service to the Brigadier General Barnard E. Bee Camp # 1575 since joining our camp in 2007. In his 5 years as a member he has served as the First Lieutenant Commander for the past two consecutive years, and on numerous Camp committees. He currently works with our Property Manager in maintaining the Battle of Aiken Site. He has been an invaluable asset to the Camp as a strong leader and supporter of our Graves Programs.

David maintains the prominent Confederate Memorial on the Jefferson Davis Highway with the Battle, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd National Flags. He insures this family is involved with all of the Bee Camp Programs. If you need someone to do a job in the SCV; David is the man to call. He makes the time to help carry the Cause forward and honor his ancestors.

During these years of service he has shown exemplary dedication to the cause; leading and guiding the Bee Camp in some very difficult times. He serves as a mentor to other Compatriots and has been a solid rock in the foundation. David’s dedication to the implementing the Charge is without comparison.  He is respected and sought out for council when tough decisions have to be made.  He emulates the very virtues of what being a Sons of Confederate Veterans Member should be on a daily basis.  

Distinguished Service Medal Compatriot Wayne Jones 2011 

For his dedication to duty and service to the B/G Barnard E. Bee Camp since joining our camp in June 2007. Compatriot Wayne Jones has unselfishly given his time, as Battle of Aiken, battle commander for the camp (08) reorganizing the battle administration function by publishing an actual battle plan book. His unselfishness gave the camp an opportunity to produce and enhance this event and provide a detailed reference for future Battles, which provides a consistent production and evaluation process for the future. Compatriot Jones also went out and found re-enactor groups will to assist and fill a large reduction in local interest. This has been a great assist to the BoA and has been so widely published that even more out of state units want to participate.

 

After turning over the BoA to the next battle commander he volunteered to become the Adjutant (09). As we know a very important post which has had its ups and downs in our camp. After a few months enlisted the assistance of finance and tax professionals at no cost to the camp.

 

He produced and published a camp budget. He also continued to obtain grant funds from Aiken Co and the City of Aiken for the Battle of Aiken advertising in which he has negotiated rates of at least half of what has been paid in the past or received more exposure per dollar spent.

 

After this years elections the Commander Elect decided not to serve, Compatriot Jones step forward to be elected as the 2010 Camp Commander and has provided leadership that has been lacking in the past few years to the Bee Camp. He has brought the values of the Charge back to the camp and changed the camps full time effort on the Battle of Aiken to be a fund raiser not the camps only attribute.

 

Compatriot Jones has distinguished himself as an individual who unselfishly provided time to further the cause and honored his ancestors with his unrelenting dedication to the camp.

Distinguished Service Medal for John Cook 2011

 

Dr. John Cook has shown outstanding dedication to duty and service to the Brigadier General Barnard E. Bee Camp # 1575 since joining our camp in 1996. In his 15 years as a member he has served as the Adjutant for three consecutive years, 1st Lieutenant Commander for three years, Camp Commander for two years, the Camp Executive Board for 12 years, and on numerous South Carolina Division committees.

 

He has been serving as the Bee Camp Chaplain for the past 2 years and will continue for the next 2 years.

 

During these years of service he has shown exemplary dedication to the cause, leading and guiding the Bee Camp in some very difficult times. He serves as a mentor to other Compatriots and has been a solid rock in the foundation. John’s dedication to the implementing the Charge is without comparison. He is respected and sought out for council when tough decisions have to be made. He emulates the very virtues of what being a Sons of Confederate Veterans Member should be.

Compatriot Frank Byrd 1997

 

Since joining our camp in July 1993, Compatriot Byrd has unselfishly given of his time and limited funds to obtain documents for potential new members and soldiers records to obtain VA markers.

 

He has spent many hours traveling from Aiken to the State Archives in Columbia, SC without reimbursement from the camp or in most cases from the potential member. He has also funded with out reimbursement the cost of coping documents for the above. Compatriot Byrd is retired and on a limited budget, yet has the time, energy and resources to carry out this task without regard to his financial status nor does he seek reward.

 

Compatriot Byrd has distinguished himself and honored his ancestors in this voluntary act to further the cause.

Compatriot Carl P. Elliott, Jr. 1997

 

From June 94, Compatriot Elliott has financially supported and provided front money for the B/G Barnard E. Bee Camp in its effort to produce the Battle of Aiken Anniversaries. This financial support amounted to nearly $10,000 the first year in either credit or cash monies to obtain goods and services. He generously allows the use of his office facilities for material staging, meetings, use of coping & office equipment, and materials.

 

His unselfishness to offer as much as necessary gave the camp an opportunity to produce an excellent event which netted a healthy profit of $14,000. Knowing this Compatriot Elliott refused any additional funds for services via his business other then that amount fronted to the camp.

 

Compatriot Elliott has distinguished himself as an individual who so unselfishly provided such an amount of money, time, facilities, equipment and materials to further the cause.

Meritorious Service Medal:Purpose: This medal is presented for outstanding performance of duty to the SCV.

Eligibility: Only members of the SCV may receive this medal. An individual may receive this medal more than once. The duty for which a nominee is submitted may be as an SCV officer

or for a specific task assigned by the Commander-in-Chief or his representative.

David Coon Meritorious Service Medal 2013

David Coon has shown outstanding dedication to duty and service to the Brigadier General Barnard E. Bee Camp # 1575. He originally joined the Bee Camp in April of 1997. He is currently serving as the 3rd  Lieutenant Commander for two years. Prior to that he served as a Reenactor Coordinator for the Battle of Aiken for two years, Camp Adjutant, and been a member of the Bee Camp Executive Board for six years.  His service as the 3rd Lieutenant Command (Coordinator for the Battle of Aiken) has been the most significant.  These responsibilities have been the most critical to the success of the Bee Camp and their fund raising activities.  He volunteered and then demonstrated an untiring work ethic in learning and performing these duties during a time of change within the Camp. He was tremendous asset in bringing a team together and working to reengineer the Battle of Aiken.  This reorganization allows us to present a successful reenactment that has been recognized by many as being one of the premier events in South Carolina and in the Southeastern United States.  He pooled resources, developed plans, and helped manage manpower to assist in producing a successful event in the face of economic downturn.  During these years of service he has shown exemplary dedication to the cause, leading and guiding the Bee Camp in some very difficult times. He serves as a mentor to other Compatriots. Gene Moseley has shown outstanding dedication to duty and service to the Brigadier General Barnard E. Bee Camp # 1575 since joining our camp in September 2001. In his years as a member he has served on many committees and been instrumental in the support of the Camp Fund Raiser every year. He has been the Camp Property Manager for the past four years, and served on the Bee Camp Executive Board for five years.

His service as the Property Manager for the Battle of Aiken Confederate Memorial Park has been the most significant.  He has shown through untiring work and dedication to duty, how to bring a team together and present a successful reenactment that has been recognized by many as being one of the premier events in South Carolina and in the Southeastern United States.  He pooled resources, developed plans, and managed manpower to produce a successful event in the face of economic downturn and tight budget constraints.  He was not only one of the faces you saw everyday, but one of the men you knew would be there to support you when you needed him.

During these years of service he has shown exemplary dedication to the cause, leading and guiding the Bee Camp in some very difficult times. His “can do” attitude made the difference when we needed it most. He serves as a mentor to other Compatriots and has been a solid rock in the foundation. Gene’s dedication to the implementing the Charge is among the best.  He is respected and sought out for council when tough decisions have to be made.  He emulates the very virtues of what being a Sons of Confederate Veterans Member should be.

David Davis has shown outstanding dedication to duty and service to the Brigadier General Barnard E. Bee Camp # 1575 since rejoining our camp in 2008. He originally joined the Bee Camp in April of 1997. In these three years, he has served as the 3rd Lieutenant Commander for one year, a Reenactor Coordinator for the Battle of Aiken for two years, and been a member of the Bee Camp Executive Board for three years. He is currently serving as the Adjutant and has been reelected for another two years.

 

His service as the Adjutant has been the most significant. These responsibilities have been the most critical to the success of the Bee Camp. He volunteered and then demonstrated an untiring work ethic in learning and performing these duties during a time of change within the Camp. He also was tremendous asset in bringing a team together and working to reengineer the Battle of Aiken. He served on the Battle of Aiken Committee during this same time. This reorganization allows us to present a successful reenactment that has been recognized by many as being one of the premier events in South Carolina and in the Southeastern United States. He pooled resources, developed plans, and helped manage manpower to assist in producing a successful event in the face of economic downturn.

Bobby Mack has shown outstanding dedication to duty and service to the Brigadier General Barnard E. Bee Camp # 1575 since joining our camp in September 2004. In his seven years as a member he has served as the 3rd Lieutenant Commander for two out of the past four years, Bee Camp Quartermaster for two years, and sat on the Bee Camp Executive Board for five years.

 

His service as the 3rd Lieutenant Commander has been the most significant. This is the position of the Administrative Director of the Battle of Aiken Reenactment. He has shown through untiring work and dedication to duty, how to bring a team together and present a successful reenactment that has been recognized by many as being one of the premier events in South Carolina and in the Southeastern United States. He pooled resources, developed plans, and managed manpower to produce a successful event in the face of economic downturn.

 

During these years of service he has shown exemplary dedication to the cause, leading and guiding the Bee Camp in some very difficult times. His can do attitude made the difference when we needed it most. He serves as a mentor to other Compatriots and has been a solid rock in the foundation. Fred Cota for his work with the battle of Aiken, 2 years running. Fred is a very diligent and hard working individual who kept things on track and smoothed over many personality conflicts.

 

His dedication to the effort in itself is worthy of award, but his tenacity of getting the job accomplished is the work above and beyond the call of duty.

 

The real reason I would like to see Fred be recognized is that here is a man, that is a construction worker who has very few administration skills, only a little leadership experience and he takes a bunch of hard heads and gets them to put on a production like the battle of Aiken.

 

He also concentrates on the true history and education for the kids and really push for the non commercialization of the battle and put it on for the right reasons. His motivation was also for his ancestor honor, not glory.

Compatriot William Bushall Jr.

 

For his dedication to duty and service to the B/G Barnard E. Bee Camp during the period Sept. 1991 until Sept. 1996. In 1991 Cmpt Bushall began building the camp, as its first Commander with 16 members has seen it rise to a high of 111 members in 5 short years. He also built 2 other camps from members of the Bee Camp in two adjoining cities.

 

He has lead the camp to earn many awards, initiated awards programs, community projects (Jefferson Davis Hwy., Graniteville & Aiken County Cemetery Documentation, Marquee Signs) held five offices in the camp, sometimes three & four at one time, has groomed others in taking over camp duties, encourages participation, provides history, support and consultation in camp matters, and continues to edited the camp newsletter after 4 years. He is to be especially commended for his administrative and computer skills which are unsurpassed and which he provides willingly when called upon.

 

Has represented the camp at all Division Conventions and 4 out of 5 National Conventions.

 

Cmpt. Bushall has unrelenting dedication to the camp and camp functions.

SCV Commendation Medal

Purpose: The SCV Commendation Medal is presented to members for meritorious service or meritorious achievement at the camp, brigade, division, or corps levels. This is the highest ranking medal which may be given without the approval of the Commander-in-Chief. However, it may also be given by the Commander-in-Chief.

Bill Bushall 2012

SCV Service Medal Purpose: The Service Award is to honor individuals for many years of membership in the SCV. Number of Awards: No annual limit. Eligibility: SCV members who have reached their 25th or 50th year of membership in the SCV. Selection Process: These medals may be obtained by requesting units from IHQ. Requesting units should submit a letter bearing the commander's signature to the Executive Director. The letter should state the name of the individual to receive the award and the date of presentation. Form of Award: This award consists of two items: (1) A standard size medal (the medal is gold for 50 years and silver for 25 years); (2) Certificate.

Superior Achievement Award

 

Purpose: This award is given to individuals in appreciation for superior services or achievement to the SCV.

Eligibility: Any SCV member. Nominees must have performed exceptional service to the SCV for an extended period of time or on a specific assignment of great

SCV Leadership Award Certificate

Purpose: This award is given to individuals who display superior leadership skills in a position of responsibility.

Eligibility: Any SCV member. Nominees must have served in a position of responsibility in the SCV for an extended period, or demonstrated exceptional

leadership ability on a specific assignment of great importance.

Meritorious Service Certificates: Eugene Barron and Harry Woodward Both were regular members (not holding offices) and volunteered to chair projects that have brought recognition to the camp. Eugene for his work with the Adopt-A-Highway and by being proactive in every other event the camp sponsored by bring his entire family, wife, kids-both at home and married, and has signed 16 cousins into the SCV. One of his cousins is the chairman of the Battle of Aiken this year. Gene also provided all the electrical support both technically and materially for the battle of Aiken and Beech Island Heritage Days. Harry has been extremely helpful in his work with the media and public relations. His getting the media to attend meetings, write stories and press releases has brought the SCV to the attention of the community. His visions are not just for the moment, he has expressed a five year plan and has been working on obtaining professional assistance in fund raising, so the battle of Aiken will not be our only and a very volatile fund raiser.

SCV Ladies Appreciation Medal

Purpose: The Ladies Appreciation Medal was created to show appreciation to those ladies who have greatly assisted the SCV in carrying out its missions, such as organizing camps, recruiting new members, active

support of camp functions, etc. Eligibility: Any Lady.

Ms. Tondra Whetsell, as a significant other, Tondra has shown more then a wife to support the SCV and David Fogle as an officer of the camp. I have not seen David without Tondra, wether it Bee a meeting, going to a cemetery, working the BoA work days, etc. You might expect some assistance and encouragement, but Tondra has exhibited an enthusiasm and dedication to the cause second to none. Her support of and too the cause is unmistakably a personal dedication. She is to be commended for her actions.

2012Ms. Pam Jones, as wife of Commander Wayne Jones you might expect some assistance and encouragement, but Ms. Jones has exhibited an enthusiasm and dedication to the cause second to none. She has participated in nearly every camp meeting, function and event in the past three years, including other functions and events outside of camp that promote the Cause. She has also accompanied Wayne to Div. Convention and visited other camps along with Wayne. She provides additional support in her accurate rendition of Mrs. Gen. J.E.B. Stuart with her homemade period dresses. Her support of the cause is unmistakably a personal dedication. She is to be commended for her actions.

2012Mrs. Stephanie Davis.

Stephanie Davis is the wife of Adjutant David Davis. She has been a strong supporter of David in the long hours he puts in as an Adjutant. Prior to being the Adjutant, David was our Battle of Aiken Coordinator and spent endless hours working with and coordinating the many committees that made up part of the event. It was during this time that Stephanie stepped up and worked side by side with him at the Battle of Aiken and helped in Registration, running errands, providing food for the workers, and any other duty she was called upon to perform. Since then she has become a fixture in helping with the Battle of Aiken in our Mercantile Store, Registration, and raising funds for the OCR and the Camp. She is a member of the Confederate Rose Chapter of the OCR which supports the Camp and the Battle of Aiken. Her tireless efforts make her a very deserving Lady that deserves recognition for the support she gives. Stephanie is to be commended for a job well done in supporting our Cause.

2012Miss. Tonya Browder. Tonya is currently the Executive Director of the Tompkins Memorial Library, a position she has held since 1998. Since becoming Director, she has authored or co-authored six books on Edgefield County genealogy and history, including Edgefield County, S.C. African-American Cemeteries, Vol. I; Remembering Edgefield 1891, Vols. 1 & 2, Free Persons of Color Edgefield District, S.C., From the Federal Census Records 1790-1860; News of the Colored People; Edgefield County, S.C.: Sifting Through the Ashes of the 1890 Census; and Guardianship Records of Old Edgefield District, S.C. Tonya worked for seven years as Community Historian for the Savannah River Archaeological Research Program, a division of the South Carolina Institute of Archaeology and Anthropology. Her work involved conducting an oral history project on the former towns and hamlets of the Savannah River Site. Using the research compiled from this project, Tonya co-authored two books, Memories of Home: Dunbarton and Meyers Mill Remembered and Memories of Home: Reminiscences of Ellenton and co-edited a book, Ellenton, SC: My Life…Its Death. She provides additional support to our Camp, and the surrounding Camps, by providing the accurate and detailed background for new members through genealogy research. Currently, Tonya is working on a book concerning Old Edgefield District Confederate soldiers which also includes Aiken County and many of our documented and undocumented graves. Her support of the cause is unmistakably a personal dedication. She is to be commended for her actions and support of our Cause.

1996Ms. Helen Byrd for her assistance to the camp in dedicating her time and energy researching records of Confederate Soldiers for information to order VA Markers or for prospective members. Many of her trips to the archives are with her husband Compatriot Frank Byrd, but in some instances she has undertaken this task herself. Her dedication to our cause stands out among us all and should be commended for her actions Ms. Cathy Brown, as wife of Compatriot Kenny Brown you might expect some assistance and encouragement. Ms. Brown has exhibited an enthusiasm and dedication to the cause second to none. She has participated in every camp meeting, function and event in the past two years, including the marching of the colors and Adopt-A-Hwy. cleanup days. She has also accompanied Kenny to Div. Convention and visited other camps along with Kenny. Her support of the cause is unmistakably a personal dedication. She is to be commended for her actions. Ms. Lambert, mother of Compatriot Joel Lambert. Ms. Lambert has shown a true dedication to the cause in her support of the Battle of Aiken. Not being closely affiliated with the camp and of extended age has provided assistance in the management of the serving lines for the battle’s concession stand. Her support of the cause is unmistakably a family affair. She is to be commended for her actions.

Compatriot of the Year

To recognize the compatriot who demonstrates an attitude that exemplifies the CHARGE of Gen. Stephen Lee and the ideals of the Sons of Confederate Veterans. Nominations will be made by the Executive Committee at the September meeting. Voting will be at the annual meeting. Voting will be by majority vote. If no candidate receives a majority of votes cast on first ballot, a runoff second ballot will be held between the top two finalists of the first ballot. Award consists of Medal and appropriate plaque, with name added to large cumulative plaque. Subsequent award will consist of plaque, Silver Star signifying second award for medal and name added to large cumulative plaque.

The following are guidelines to assist you in your selection of the Compatriot who should be honored by the Camp for his actions.

1.  Volunteers for Camp functions as his ancestor did.

2.  Is in regular attendance of Camp meetings.

3.  Assists in Camp activities.

4.  Has been a standing or special committee member.

5.  Actively promotes membership and brings

guest to the meetings.

6.  Proudly wears his lapel pin and displays an SCV decal.

7.  Visits other Camps, attends Division or National Functions.

8.  Is not the current Commander.
