CDSBC 2013 Awards

This award recognizes significant contributions to CDSBC, beyond basic volunteer participation.

Award of Merit

Martin has generously volunteered his time to CDSBC for over 20 years. He was a member of the College’s Accreditation Committee from 1993 to 2009, and he currently serves on the Sedation and General Anaesthetic Services Committee. Marty

was also a member, and later chair, of the Hospital Services Committee.

Marty received his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from the University of Toronto in 1983 and his

Fernanda has made a significant contribution to the College by generously giving her time and her expertise to create the Obstructive Sleep Apnea Guideline. This important document provides the profession with evidence-based recommendations

for how dentists and physicians should manage patients with obstructive sleep apnea and snoring.

Fernanda chairs the Oral Appliance Network for Global Effectiveness Sleep Group, a group of

specialty in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery from the University of Minnesota in 1988.

He began teaching at the University of British Columbia’s Faculty of Dentistry in 1990 and is currently head of the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Department.

Marty is a past president of the Dental Specialists Society of BC and of the BC Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons. He is presently a consultant for the BC Cancer Agency and chair of the Division of Dentistry at Surrey Memorial Hospital.

He is a fellow of the American College of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons and owns and operates a private practice in Surrey.

Fernanda received her Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from the University of Sao Paulo, Brazil and her PhD from the University of British Columbia.

She is currently an assistant professor at UBC’s Faculty of Dentistry, and sees patients in a private practice focused on the treatment of sleep disordered breathing.

Tobin has been volunteering with CDSBC for eight years. Toby joined the Sedation and General Anaesthetic Services Committee (formerly Accreditation) in 2005. He is currently vice-chair of the committee.

Toby received his Doctor of Dental Medicine degree in 1998. After graduation, he practised general dentistry for three years, during which time he completed an oral surgery

Brian has been an enthusiastic CDSBC volunteer for 10 years. He has served on the College’s Sedation and General Anaesthetic Services Committee (formerly Accreditation) since 2004.

Brian received his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree

from the University of Southern California in 2000. He then completed a three-year, hospital-based

externship at the Oregon Health Sciences University in Portland. This led to a residency program in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the Washington Hospital Center in Washington, D.C., where he completed his specialty in 2005. Since graduation, he has been practising in a private practice in Coquitlam.

Toby is a clinical associate professor at UBC’s Faculty of Dentistry, past president of the Dental Specialists Society of BC, and current president of the BC Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons.

He holds fellowships with the Royal College of Dentists of Canada and the American Dental Society of Anesthesiology.

He is currently the vice-president for the American Dental Board of Anesthesiology and sits on the board of the American Dental Society of Anesthesiology. He is also the secretary for the Canadian Academy of Dental Anaesthesia and is the course director for local anaesthesia and sedation at UBC’s Faculty of Dentistry.

Brian practises in Vancouver and maintains an outpatient anaesthesia clinic that provides general anaesthesia and sedation services for dentists in the city.

Michael has donated his time and expertise to the College since 2007. He sat on CDSBC’s Professional Conduct Committee for two years before joining the Inquiry Committee, where he has been a member since 2009.

Mike received his Doctor of Dental Medicine degree in 1982 from the University of British Columbia. He has practised general dentistry since graduation and enjoys

responsible for updating the College’s governance manual. He currently serves on CDSBC’s Discipline Committee.

working on comprehensive restorative dentistry, TMD/orofacial pain and prosthodontics.

He has been published in peer-reviewed scientific journals and has authoured books on oral rehabilitation, occlusion, and facially generated treatment planning. He is a reviewer for the Journal of the Canadian Dental Association and the Journal of the Academy of General Dentistry. He also mentors for the F.O.C.U.S. Dental Education Continuum.

He is a fellow of the Academy of General Dentistry and the American College of Dentists, as well as a diplomate of the American Board of Orofacial Pain and of the International Congress of Oral Implantologists.

In addition to volunteering with CDSBC, Tony is also a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of BC’s Discipline Committee, a director of Coast Wholesale Appliances (CWA), and chair of CWA’s Audit Committee. Tony also served as a director of the Burnaby Winter Club and was chair of its Finance Committee.

Tony was a partner in Dale Matheson Carr-Hilton Labonte, LLP, Chartered Accountants and a predecessor firm Jacobson, Soda et al. from 1976 until his retirement in 2007. In his retirement, he continues to pursue other interests such as providing business advisory services to private companies.

David has been an active member of CDSBC’s volunteer network since 2005. He was a member of the Accreditation Committee, and took on the position of chair when it was renamed the Sedation and General Anaesthetic Services Committee in 2009.

He is also a member of the College’s Minimal and Moderate Sedation Guidelines Working Group.

Dave earned his Bachelor of Science and Doctor of Dental Medicine degrees from the University of British Columbia. In 2004, he graduated from the

University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio with a specialty in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. During his specialist residency, Dave also completed medical school and a one-year general surgery internship.

He is an associate professor at UBC’s Faculty of Dentistry and the vice-president of the British Columbia Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons.

In addition to running his own private practice in North Vancouver, Dave also works out of Vancouver General Hospital’s Dental Clinic, where he mentors residents.

Dave is a fellow of the Royal College of Dentists of Canada.

David Sowden, B.Sc., DMD, MD, Certified Specialist (Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery)

Award of Merit

David sat on CDSBC’s Board from 2011 to 2013. He was a member, and later vice-chair, of the Audit Committee. David was also a member of the College’s Strategic Plan Working Group and the Finance and Audit Working Group.

After receiving his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Victoria, he was accepted into the University of British Columbia’s Faculty of Dentistry and completed

his Doctor of Dental Medicine degree in 1989. After graduation, he joined his father’s general dentistry practice in Victoria, where he continues to practise today.

David is a dental consultant for the Province of British Columbia’s Ministry of Children and Family Development and sits on various committees at the Canadian Dental Association.

David is a fellow of the International College of Dentists, the American College of Dentists, the Pierre Fauchard Academy, and the Academy of Dentistry International.

Paul has been a CDSBC volunteer since 2003. From 2003 to 2010, he served as a public representative on the College’s Board and was a member of the Practice Standards Committee and the Ethics Committee.

Paul continues to be an active College volunteer and has been a member of both the Quality Assurance Committee and the Discipline Committee since 2009.

He also sits on CDSBC’s Continuing Education Subcommittee.

During his 33-year career in education, Paul advanced from teacher to principal to assistant superintendent of schools. Since his retirement in 2001, Paul has owned and operated two small businesses, and has served as a member of a Royal Roads University MBA Program Advisory Committee, chair of the Kelowna Property Assessment Review Panel, and as a compliance auditor for the Ministry of Education.

Currently, he is on the board of a BC credit union, where he lends his expertise to the areas of strategic planning, governance, and human resources.

Paul Durose, BPE, MA

This award recognizes outstanding and broad contributions to CDSBC over an extended period of time.

John has graciously donated his time to the College of Dental Surgeons since 1973. In that time, he has been a member of numerous committees including committees on education and dental employee benefits. John chaired both the

Professional Conduct Committee and the Peer Review Committee. He was also a College Examiner for the Certified Dental Assistant Examination. John continues to share his experience and knowledge with the College as a member of CDSBC’s Discipline Committee.

John completed his Bachelor of Science and Doctor of Dental Medicine degrees at the University of British Columbia. He later went on to receive his Masters of Business Administration from Simon Fraser University.

John practised general dentistry in Vancouver’s west end for 37 years. During this time, he was also a lecturer in UBC’s Department of Oral Biology and volunteered at the Reach Dental Clinic.

Since retiring, he has been an active member of the Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue Station 1 in Horseshoe Bay. He has several Transport Canada marine certificates and training as a first responder. He was a member and director of the board of the North Shore Lifeboat Society.

Michael is a truly committed member of the College’s volunteer network. He has been a member of the Sedation and General Anaesthetic Services Committee (formerly Accreditation) since 2002, serving as chair from 2005 to 2009. He is also the chair of

the Minimal and Moderate Sedation Guidelines Working Group.

Mike received his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from the University of Alberta in 1989, where he was named class valedictorian. After completing a general

practice residency, he was accepted to the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery residency program at the University of Minnesota. He completed his specialty degree in 1994.

He is a past president of both the BC Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons and the Dental Specialists Society of BC.

A surgical mentor with North Fraser Seminars for Dental Excellence, Mike holds hospital privileges with hospitals in the Fraser Health Authority, where he provides services for complex surgical/medical patients.

Mike has owned and operated a private practice in Coquitlam for the past 18 years.

Michael Henry, DDS, Certified Specialist (Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery)

Gordon has been a committed CDSBC volunteer for over 20 years. He became a member of the College’s Accreditation Committee shortly after its inception in the early 1990s.

One of the important committee projects undertaken during that

time was the creation of inspection process guidelines for dental clinics offering sedation services.

He has continued to give his time to the Sedation and General Anaesthetic Services Committee and,

as one of two biomedical engineers on the College’s inspection team, he inspects all the dental sedation clinics in the Lower Mainland.

Gord graduated with a Diploma of Technology from the British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT) in 1969. After working for 12 years as a technologist, he returned to school to complete his Bachelor of Science with Honours from Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario. Gord then began his graduate studies at UBC, where he obtained a Masters of Applied Science in Electrical Engineering in 1987.

Gord has worked as a biomedical engineer at Vancouver General Hospital since 1987. His areas of expertise include anaesthesia technology, risk management, and health care standards.

The Honoured Member Award is presented to individuals who have made remarkable, broad-based contributions to CDSBC over a sustained period of time, having significant impact on the College. This award may be for service that is provincial, national or international in nature.

Jim was a dedicated and long-standing CDSBC volunteer. Jim began volunteering at CDSBC in the early 80s. He was a Council member for many years as the Upper Island representative. He was also a member of multiple College committees and subcommittees including Communications,

Compensation, Finance, Management, Publications, Registrar Search, and Recognition and Awards. Jim served as CDSBC Treasurer, Vice-President, and was College President from 1999 to 2001.

Jim also served as president of the Kootenay Dental Society and of the Upper Island Dental Society.

In addition to generously giving back to his profession, he also devoted much time to his communities. Jim served as mayor of Comox from 2002 to 2008.

Arnold has been a dedi cated CDSBC volunteer for over 30 years. He began his work with the College as the component society representative in the 1980s and was also a member of the Executive Committee during that time. Arnold served as College Treasurer from 1985 to 1987.

After a short break, Arnold returned to College Council and was the Prince George representative from 1993 to 1997. He also resumed his service on the Executive Committee where he generously donated his time until 2003.

Arnold’s most notable contribution has been his involvement and dedication to improving the College’s complaints process. He began his service on the

He received his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Manitoba in 1971 and his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from McGill University in 1975.

Jim practised general dentistry for over 30 years. He was a dental officer in the Canadian Armed Forces, and he owned and operated two private practices, first in Golden, BC, and then in Comox, where he practised until 2010.

He was a fellow of the International College of Dentists, the Pierre Fauchard Academy, the Academy of Dentistry International, and the American College of Dentists.

Jim passed away peacefully the night of July 12, 2013 at the age of 64. He is survived by his wife Susan, and his children Lindsay, Heather, Dann, and Jamie.

Honoured Member Award

Professional Review Committee in 1990 and, following an overhaul of the complaints process, he served on the Professional Conduct Committee. He was also a key member of the College’s Inquiry Committee for more than 10 years. Arnold continues to work tirelessly on CDSBC’s behalf and has been a member of the Discipline Committee since 2010.

Arnold served as a board member for the Canadian Fund for Dental Education for five years, and as a Dentistry Canada Fund board member for 10 years.

In addition to his volunteer work with CDSBC and within the dental profession, Arnold also taught in the dental hygiene programs at the College of New Caledonia in Prince George and Camosun College in Victoria.

Arnold received his Bachelor of Science degree (1967) and his Doctor of Dental Medicine degree (1971) from the University of British Columbia. After graduation, he moved to Prince George, where he practised general dentistry until his retirement in 2010.
