Haveirim Y’karim – Dear Friends –
“The new normal.”
Most of us are probably already geing
a lile weary of hearing that phrase.
Mostly because the “new normal” keeps
changing all the time.
There’s no question about it though:
things are different – very different! –
than they were just a few months ago.
You probably heard me say that my un-
dergraduate degree was in Ecology, Ethology, and Evolution. We
tend to think of “evolution” as that process that plays out over
many generations – thousands, even millions of years. But evolu-
tion is also driven by sudden dramatic events. A radical change in
environment, a sudden depletion of resources, an unexpected shift
in the landscape: those species or individuals that can adapt to the
“new normal” will flourish. Those that can’t adapt will struggle.
When the COVID-19 pandemic first hit, none of us could have pre-
dicted just how far-reaching the effects would be. Here in Orlando,
we even joked, “I’m not going to start worrying until Disney shuts
down!” And then it did.
Every one of us – every person, every family, every organization,
every business – found ourselves scrambling across unfamiliar,
uncharted, and nerve-wracking territory.
We certainly were at Ohev Shalom. But our thoughtful and dedi-
cated lay leadership, in full partnership with our hard-working
staff, labored tirelessly to hammer out a strategy, often having to
reshape it hour by hour, as new information came in. As a result,
our employees kept their jobs and our synagogue family contin-
ued to gather, although now in virtual formats.
Now, here we are – in a new phase of the “new normal”. On the
Shabbat of July 10-11, we’re set to resume in-person services, with
precautions in place to ensure everyone’s health and safety. We
already have plans in motion to enhance our virtual services with
improved video, audio, and production. In-person programs – so-
cially distanced and with safety protocols in place – are underway
for our youth and adult programming is in the works.
But there’s still much more to do, as the “new normal” continues
to emerge and evolve. High Holidays are coming up in September.
Watch for special new experiences and opportunities during Elul,

Dear Friends,
I am certain that
many of you feel the
way I do about this
pandemic situation.
Enough already
with singing and
chanting to an emp-
ty room. And that’s
just me at home! Seriously, the biggest prob-
lem I have during services is my attempt to
daven with proper kavanah, purpose and in-
tention. It is especially noticeable when lead-
ing a Piano Shabbat service. I have spent
years trying to put together a service that I
can play that involves a lot of congregational
participation. With no congregation to sing
along, it feels more like a show than a service.
That’s why I will be moving the Piano Shabbat
up to the bimah from now on to at least make
it “feel” more like a service to me. The added
bonus is that, when the congregation does
come back, I’ll have better social distancing!
In truth, Covid-19 has changed the way I do
almost everything here. I have been teaching
students on-line. It is great for many par-
ents, who no longer need to make the drive to
COS. I must admit that I do not feel as effec-
tive an instructor using this method. Yes, it’s
better than nothing, and there are many edu-
cators who are able to teach very effectively in
this situation. I, on the other hand, am like
an old dog learning new tricks. During my 12
years at Walt Disney World, every show I
played was before a live audience. When I
came here, there was always a live congrega-
tion. I’ve never done TV or movies. Just the
thought of singing in an empty room, other
than the shower, seems absurd to me.
Having said all that, I know that the ability to
hold services virtually has been a wonderful
chance for so many of you to hear the words
and melodies that you are used to. I know
that some folks are really comforted by the
knowledge that their service, albeit remote,
continued every week. Jewish continuity is
something we are all concerned about. Re-
mote streaming of services is a corollary. It
lets us know that no matter what the difficul-
ty, Judaism continues to thrive. When one
considers all the horrible hardships that have
been placed upon our people over the millen-
nium, having to go to the synagogue remotely
probably ranks very near the bottom of the
list.
So, let’s get ready for masks, hand sanitizer
and effective social distancing. Is it ideal?
No, but at least we will once again be able to
gather to pray, sing and see our friends. Sor-
ry, no eating yet. Here is some good news--
that will be back before you know it. I am
very excited to see those of you who are com-
fortable attending services this summer. I
look at it this way: On Purim everyone wears
a mask. Purim is the happiest day in the
Jewish calendar. And now, everyday will
seem a little like Purim. I know, it is a
stretch. Let’s turn our Covid into KAVOD,
holiness.
Fondly,
Cantor Robuck
A NOTE FROM YOUR CANTOR
PAGE 4 • JULY / AUGUST 2020 CONGREGATION OHEV SHALOM TAMMUZ ~ AV ~ ELUL 5780
Dear Friends,
My kids used to watch
Phineas and Ferb, an ani-
mated TV show with a
theme song that begins
with the improbable
line, “Thereʹs 104 days
of summer vacation,
and school comes along
just to end it . . . .”
With summer break
typically lasting a lile
less than 75 days in
Florida, the title characters of the show seemed to
have a prey good life. Lile did we know, dis-
tance learning notwithstanding, that students
would be on “break” from school for more than
104 days by the end of June, with another six
weeks to go before they return to campus and He-
brew School here at Congregation Ohev Shalom.
We hope.
The year 2020 has been an incredibly stressful time
for just about every person in the world as we cope
with the COVID-19 pandemic that has upended
life as we know it. It is human nature to adapt,
and Congregation Ohev Shalom has adapted well!
Our incredible clergy, staff and volunteers are
working daily to provide virtual services, learning
and programming and to prepare COS for reopen-
ing to “in person” services and activities.
The COS Reopening Task Force has been meeting
regularly and has prepared a comprehensive reo-
pening plan. The task force has representatives
from a variety of COS interests (i.e., ritual, pro-
gramming, education, youth), includes three phy-
sicians, and has received guidance from the Orlan-
do Health Business Ready team focusing on
COVID-19 prevention. COS plans to return to “in-
person” congregational life in phases and with nu-
merous safety precautions in place. Many congre-
gants are ready to return to the synagogue build-
ing while others are not ready to return yet. We
respect these individual decisions and will contin-
ue to engage our members whether they are in the
synagogue or in their homes.
COS recently issued a survey to learn more about
members’ intentions regarding Shabbat and High
Holiday services. The number one comment re-
garding virtual services was succinct: Get a beer
camera. This was not news to COS leadership, but
it reaffirmed our commitment to bring a beer vis-
ual experience to congregants aending services
remotely.
Several generous members have donated to a spe-
cial “technology fund” to enable COS to purchase
a new camera and make significant related up-
grades that will allow Ohev Shalom to provide a
beer virtual experience for congregants partici-
pating from home. Even when we return to
“normal,” the enhanced technology will allow
Ohev Shalom to provide a high quality visual ex-
perience for anyone participating virtually in Shab-
bat services and other programs in the sanctuary.
We are excited to move forward with this project
in the coming weeks. Thank you very much to our
donors who have made this technology upgrade
possible!
On another note, COS is beginning to prepare the
Community Ad Book/Membership Directory for
2020-2021. The forms for renewing your business
ad or greeting are in the process of being mailed to
you. Please call Meryl in the COS office if you
have moved or your contact information has other-
wise changed since last year or if you need to make
other changes to the information listed in the 2019-
2020 directory.
Finally, the High Holiday Commiee is meeting
regularly to plan meaningful High Holiday ser-
vices for congregants aending in person and vir-
tually. We may not have another 104 days left of
summer vacation (we hope), but we do know we
have about 75 days until the High Holidays. But
who’s counting?
I wish our entire COS family continued good
health.

Rachel D. Gebaide

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
TAMMUZ ~ AV ~ ELUL 5780 CONGREGATION OHEV SHALOM JULY / AUGUST 2020 • PAGE 5
Our name says it all. We are a true sisterhood…
women who start as strangers, become friends and
over time, through shared experiences and shared
values, build bonds that make us feel like sisters.
We are a diverse, commied, caring
group, dedicated to a wide variety of reli-
gious, educational, social, philanthropic,
and advocacy efforts.
For the past several months, an enthusiastic group
of Sisterhood members met, via Zoom, to conduct
a mini-strategic plan. We were delighted in the
many strengths of our Sisterhood. We discussed
opportunities to improve perceived weaknesses.
What became very evident is the realization of one
of our major strengths… the dedication and deter-
mination of our past leaders and the desire to sus-
tain a strong Sisterhood.
From these meetings, three action plans were se-
lected to become our initial focus: a new Sister-
hood structure, an updated website and a new
logo.
A new structure to encompass the key areas of a
thriving Sisterhood was developed. To use the
analogy of a tree, the new structure has a very
strong trunk, or core, that extends into two branch-
es, in our case an Operations function and a Pro-
gramming function. Within Operations, lead by Es,
we “branch” out into Communications, Financial
and Outreach areas. The Programming “branch,”
led by Sandi, includes Events/Programs and Youth
and Family.
We want to welcome and introduce you to the oth-
er members of our Sisterhood Executive Leader-
ship Team: Debbie Bellinkoff- Outreach Manager,
Jaime Gold – Financial Manager, Susan Rosen -
Communications Manager, Erika Siegel - Youth
and Family Manager and Sarah Siegel – Programs
Manager. Rounding out our team is Roslyn Le-
venthal, Secretary and Marj Smith, our Parlimen-
tarian.
In addition to a new structure, very soon we will
launch an updated web page. Potential members
can learn about Sisterhood and have an opportuni-
ty to complete an on-line membership application.
Our new Sisterhood logo, an eternal flame with a
heart, is filled with meaningful symbolism. For
many years, the Sisterhood has taken pride in be-
ing “the heart of the synagogue.” We want to carry
that special meaning into the future. Ohev
Shalom’s Ner Tamid symbolizes the warmth of
the traditions of Jewish life and calls to mind G-d’s
presence and care of His people. The role that the
Sisterhood plays in “keeping the flame,” by doing
miLvot and caring of family and community, is
incorporated into the new logo through the sym-
bols of the flame and the heart.

Even though I have been
mostly staying at home,
Ohev Shalom membership
has never been far from my
mind. Thank you Rabbi Kay
and Cantor Robuck for the
beautiful livestream ser-
vices, especially the guitar
and piano Shabbats which have been so inspira-
tional. Anyone who has not been part of these ser-
vices from home has been missing out.
I am geing to start work on the 2020-2021 Com-
munity Ad book and Membership Directory. If
your address, email or phone number has changed,
or was incorrect in a previous directory, please
email Meryl, at [email protected] .
It is not too soon to be thinking about your ad or
greeting to support all that Ohev Shalom is doing
during Covid 19, to keep learning going onward
and everyone connected. Of course, we are all
looking forward to resumption of our normal pro-
grams, activities and services on Concourse Park-
way. We appreciate the generous support from
our previous ad sponsors and hope we will be able
to include some new sponsors this year in our new
book. Please look for a mailing later this month.
If you would like to help with our Membership or
Directory commiees, please contact me at

The world is a different
place since our last bulletin,
something none of us could
have imagined. The change
has brought sadness, confu-
sion, anger, grief, and frus-
tration, but it has also given
us hope, reflection, apprecia-
tion, and the realization that
we need to listen, be educated, open minded, re-
think our priorities, and see new ways of looking
at situations and the importance of kindness.
As soon as the decision to close buildings and be-
come virtual happened, the teaching staff went
into action. There was no doubt or question that
we needed to keep our students connected on a
regular basis if for no other reason than to see their
friends. We agreed to maintain our two day a
week program. Being that this was new territory
for all of us and some of us being more tech savvy
than others, we prey much proceeded by the seat
of our pants and had to adapt. Our vocabulary
changed quickly from books, supplies, room us-
age, snack schedule to zoom, break out rooms,
waiting rooms, private links, and our favorite,
mute! We quickly learned that you can’t do the
same kind of teaching virtually as you do in the
classroom. This was a bit of a struggle because the
students may not learn the same amount. That’s
ok. They learned that their community is here for
them regardless of the circumstances and that be-
ing Jewish is who you are and not something you
do. Our aendance was amazing. We realized that
there were no extracurricular conflicts preventing
students from aending but they could have cho-
sen not to participate. I am grateful to the parents
who made sure their children were logged in.
Screen fatigue was real and they could have given
their children a pass, but they didn’t. Our
Madrichim continued to log in and be part of their
class even if they did not have a lot to do, although
controlling the waiting room, private chaing stu-
dents and leading games became part of their re-
sponsibilities. We believed we were doing the
right thing and that was confirmed for us when we
held a Shalom U’Lihitraot Parade on the last day.
Closure is important and we all needed to see each
other to bring closure. Teachers and Madrichim
were safely distanced around the entire parking
lot and families drove through stopping at the ta-
bles of their class to say goodbye. Tracey, Rabbi
Kay and I were at the end of the line, playing some
of our favorite Jewish songs on the speaker and
gave out goodie bags. We estimate that we had 50
-70% of our families show up. So many of the cars
were decorated and students held up signs of
thanks and appreciation. Truth be told, I wasn’t
sure how it would work and if people would show
up, so when the cars started lining up, I became
very emotional and am even emotional now as I
write this. The love and appreciation we felt, see-
ing the smiles of our students and parents saying
they missed us and being told that we nailed vir-
tual school and should share what we did with
other schools, confirmed that we did the right
thing.

The Ohev Shalom Men’s Club continues to func-
tion and serve the members of our community and
synagogue, even in the times of COVID.
We continue to support the religious school. We
also continue to support and promote the bicycling
club and the weekday minyan. We are looking
forward to the return of in-person services, so we
can resume assisting as ushers.
We recently had an afternoon planned of social
distancing at Leu Gardens – it was postponed due
to weather, but we are looking for a suitable date
to reschedule. We are teaming up with a number
of other local Jewish groups to promote the aware-
ness of and treatment of substance use disor-
ders. We are looking for a suitable virtual “recess”
activity.
We wish all in the congregation and in the Orlan-
do community health and safety, and look forward
to seeing you again in-person!

ally. It was special and for sure memorable. We
even took a zoom class picture that will hang with
the other pictures in the school wing. Zoom al-
lowed family members and friends who don’t live
in Orlando to join us. We also celebrated Shabbat
Kavod, when we install and discharge our youth
boards, honor our graduating seniors, Madrichim
and teachers. This year we say goodbye to a few
of our teachers. Yael Weinstein was with us for
this year teaching Kitah Bet/second grade. Yael is
a Jewish educator whose breadth of knowledge
and love of teaching benefied her students and
fellow teachers. Her tech savvy really came in
handy as she patiently held many of our hands.
Bey Monroe has been teaching Pre K at Ohev
since 2006 and our youngest campers counselor.
She is passionate about Jewish education for
young children and was loved and trusted by her
students and parents. Isaac Berger has been teach-
ing at Ohev for 29 years. He lives the life he teach-
es and is passionate about ensuring our Jewish fu-
ture. When I arrived he was teaching 7th grade,
then was the computer teacher (those were the
days when not everyone had a computer, tablet)
and his final assignment as the part of the 5th
grade dynamic duo. Isaac was also the house
chairman in the old building. He has been a pillar
of our school and his presence and contributions
will be missed. To all three of our teachers, we say
Todah Rabbah and may they go from strength to
strength.
In addition to Hebrew school, DDD, USY, Kadima,
KibbuL Ohev Family, and Mishpacha Sheli con-
tinued virtually. We couldn’t figure out how to do
the play and that was disappointing and we had
to postpone MACHANEH OHEV. BUT we are in
the midst of MACHANEH OHEV “babayit”
Home Edition two mornings a week. Our theme is
bringing Israel to Ohev and each day we visit an-
other place in Israel. We even have live visitors
from Israel. We will be doing MACHANEH Ohev
Lite July 27-31 in person. It is modified and will
take place in two sessions, 9-12:30 and 1:30-5. It is
limited to 50 campers per session and we already
have a waiting list for Session Alef, which is in the
morning. Some of our teens went on a virtual tour
of Israel for the week of June 15-19 with a live tour
guide in Israel in conjunction with Jewish National
Fund. Eric and I have been enjoying welcoming
Shabbat on Facebook live each Friday. It has made
our Shabbat more special and meaningful.
We are looking ahead to the new school year.
School will begin August 16. We are looking at
three scenarios, all in person, all virtual and a hy-
brid of both. Regardless of the direction we take,
we will need to plan differently. Registration is
presently under way!
I am writing this on the 4th anniversary of Pulse.
Since that time we have seen other incidents of
specific groups of people targeted simply for
whom they are, including Jews. At the time of the
tragedy, we all express our outrage and vow never
to let it happen again, yet it is happening again.
Our history teaches us clearly that we can never
forget. We teach our children that people were
created to be partners with God to take care of the
world and continue to repair what is broken. This
is what is meant by Tikun Olam. Speak up when
we see a wrong, be open to other’s opinions, edu-
cate ourselves on the issue, put ourselves in oth-
ers’ shoes, and as it says in the Holiness Code,
treat others as you want to be treated.
The situation is ever changing and we can only
plan based on the present. By the time this gets to
your home, things could have changed again. It is
my hope that we all make smart decisions and we
can be together again in person!
Stay well, stay safe!

by RABBI DAVID KAY
Dear Rabbi –
The pandemic hit and everything went virtual. Okay –
it’s an extreme situation. But does that mean we can
start doing things on Shabbat we weren’t supposed to
do before? Where does that end? And what happens
when the pandemic eventually ends?
-- COVID Confused
Dear CC –
Making a VERY long story short here…
Despite all the jokes (“How many Jewish mothers
does it take to change a light bulb?” “That’s okay –
I’ll sit in the dark!”), Judaism isn’t big on martyr-
dom. Extreme, potentially life-threatening situa-
tions call for leniency and adaptive interpretations
of Jewish law and custom. When the situation is
no longer extreme and life-threatening, the lenien-
cy and adaptive interpretations no longer apply.
Usually.
We can’t pretend that the adjustments made
throughout the Jewish world during this sha’at ha-
d’hak (“time of extraordinary circumstances”)
won’t have a lingering and probably permanent
effect on some aspects of everyday Jewish life. At
the same time, emergency plans are for…well,
emergencies.
For example, our congregation was already
streaming Shabbat services live over the internet a
long time before COVID-19 hit. We’ll continue that
after the pandemic is history – just as we always
did. What’s going to be different is how we
stream. We’re having to upgrade and add camer-
as, audio feeds, and software to make the virtual
service experience the best we can. Those im-
provements won’t be abandoned once people start
coming back to services in person.
On the other hand, while our building was closed,
for instance, we counted devices connected to our
Livestream as part of a minyan. As long as we had
10 or more devices connected, we could do the full
service, even though it was just Cantor and me in
the sanctuary. Once we’re back to doing services
in person, though, we can’t rationalize counting
connected devices. Folks will still be watching
online, of course, but we’ll be counting people pre-
sent in the room for the minyan.
We’re learning how technology can be used within
the framework of Jewish law. We’re answering
questions – like yours – that not only hadn’t been
answered before, many of them hadn’t even been
asked. The most impressive part of it all is that
you’re asking – and we continuing working to-
gether as a community to find authentic and prac-
tical answers.
Stay safe and well!
