“[St. Louis Park High School] expects its students to abide by the ethical and legal

academic integrity is the norm.

Introduction to the NHS According to the Constitution of the National Honor Society, Article I Section 2: “The purpose of this organization shall be to create enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to enthusiasm to tender service, to promote leadership, and to develop character in the students of secondary schools.” Article VII Section 1 goes on to state that “membership in the local chapter is an honor bestowed upon a student. Selection for membership is by a Faculty Council and is based on outstanding scholarship, character, leadership, and service. Once selected, members have a responsibility to continue to demonstrate these qualities.” The official website for the National Honor Society is: http://www.nhs.us/
The National Honors Society recognizes four pillars for the organization; Service, Leadership, Character and Scholarship as visualized in the NHS logo above. To be honored through induction into the organization, you will have had to display consistent and outstanding characteristics of these four pillars throughout your high school career. The NHS motto is the French phrase noblesse oblige which translates to nobility obligates. In essence it means that to be a member of the National Honor Society you will need to consistently live in a manner that displays that you are a positive leader, have good character, strive to always serve others and exceed academic standards both before and after induction. Chapter Mission Statement The St. Louis Park High School National Honor Society aims to provide enriching experiences for outstanding students. Our NHS Chapter hopes to foster and reward dedication to our four principles: exceeding scholarship, leadership through active participation, service individually and as a group, and character building.

Obligations of Membership NHS Constitution Article VII Section 1
“Membership in the local chapter is an honor bestowed upon a student. Selection for membership is by a Faculty Council and is based on outstanding scholarship, character, leadership, and service. Once selected, members have a responsibility to continue to demonstrate these qualities.”
Candidates must maintain the following Scholarship requirements: o Juniors with a minimum GPA of 3.75 o Seniors with a minimum GPA of 3.75 OR a minimum GPA of 3.5 who have taken five AP
or IB classes. Candidates must fulfill the following Leadership requirements: o Attend six of the seven group meetings (if you are more than 10 minutes late, it does
not count as one of your six). o Attend one of the Character in Leadership Summits (there will be three offerings of the
Summit). o Participate in leadership opportunities either in school or outside of school. Candidates must fulfill the following Service requirements: o Participate in three different group service projects o New members who complete thirty individual service hours or returning members
who complete twenty individual service hours by Friday March 18th, 2016. (No more than ten hours may carryover from the summer. Summer hours must be submitted by September 30th, 2015). To determine if it may be an acceptable source of volunteering ask yourself; “is this a thoughtful use of my time that helps the community?”; “Is this something that I would put on my resume when applying for jobs and college?”
Candidates must continually display good Character: o Any honor violations during the year (drinking; tobacco use; cheating; suspension from
school, sports, or school-‐related activities…) will result in a member’s dismissal from the National Honor Society.

Meeting Schedule and Structure You are required to attend six of the seven group meetings. Being sick or having an otherwise excused absence for the day still counts as a missed meeting! If you are more than 10 minutes late, it does not count as one of your six. The last meeting of the year will be a partial run through of the induction ceremony, and will begin 15 minutes later than the other meetings. Arrive at least 10 minutes prior to the start time to sign in on the roster at the front of the room. The roster will be removed at 7:40 am. All meetings will be held in C350 unless otherwise announced. Meetings begin promptly at 7:30am. Again, arrive at least 10 minutes early to sign in and socialize and participate fully in ice breakers and games. We will try to have treats at all meetings, although it is dependent upon donations from other organizations. If treats are available, you may get them after the general session of the meeting has concluded before you head to class for the day. We will end meetings with enough time for you to get to class. It is important that you arrive to your first hour on time. You will not be given passes and Mrs. Magdal will not excuse you. Some Anticipated 2015-‐2016 Special Meeting Activities: Throughout the year we will collect coins at all of our meetings. The money collected will go to a charity that we helped during the year. The charity will be selected based on student member and candidate member votes. Also throughout the year we will recognize volunteers of the month with a little ceremony. We will ask the VoM to describe their project and provide information for others on how to get involved if applicable. 9/16/15: School Supply Drive
11/11/15: World Kindness Day Activities/Gratitude Activity
12/9/15: Speaker
1/13/16: Pet Blankets & Animal Visit
2/10/16: “Thank you for putting your heart in teaching” Activity
3/9/16: Name Pronunciation
4/13/16: Quick meeting (arrive 15 minutes later) to run through induction & recognition ceremony.

Individual Service Opportunities Hey Photography Lovers! We need a NHS chapter photographer! You will be required to attend the group volunteering projects and the meetings and take photos at each of them. You will post the photos on the FB page after each event. At the end of the year, you will prepare a video set to music of some of the photos for our induction banquet. All of these hours will count as your individual and group volunteering hours for the year. Are you interested? Schedule a time with Mrs. Magdal to show off your camera equipment and some samples of your work to the NHS officers. Tutoring Volunteering Opportunity NHS members will volunteer as tutors to other students in the LMC. Tutoring sessions will initially begin working at the tables by the stacks of books. It may later move to the back classroom, depending on how things go. Tutoring will begin September 22nd, and it will run to nearly graduation (with a few breaks for testing). Tutoring sessions will run from 8:00 – 8:30am on Tuesdays and Thursday’s only. For each session you sign up for and attend, you will earn 30 minutes of individual service hour time. Mrs. Magdal will be the final signature on your submitted Individual Hours Form. When you sign up you will check off which general topics you are comfortable helping with. Prior to each date you have signed up for you will receive a reminder email. Three people will sign up for each day, so you could even plan to do your volunteering with your NHS friends! A sign tent with your name, and the topics you checked will be made for you & waiting for you in the LMC before you volunteer. You will put this name tent sign on the table you are working at. Depending on how many students come for help, you may work together, or you will be working with an individual or a group on your own. Remember that tutoring does not mean giving answers to other students, or complaining about past classes. You should ask the students coming for help guiding questions so that they become successful in answering the question. You may also go through examples for them, so that they could then solve a similar problem on their own. Remain positive, patient, encouraging and supportive! When the time is complete, or the student you are working with is done, please have them complete the short survey & place it in the bucket.

Mentor Members Hey Current Members (inducted May 2015)! You are going to do something really meaningful with other members of NHS this year! You will be teamed with new candidate members at the Character in Leadership Summit. You will mentor this group of candidate members throughout the remainder of the year in NHS. You will even earn 3 hours of individual service for completing the following requirements: 1. Plan to go to one group project together. 2. Plan at least one hour of individual service to do with your group. Need an idea? Talk to an officer! 3. Set up one study session prior to finals. 4. Check in with your group members at least one time per month (not including group meetings) to see how everyone is doing.

ARTICLE II: MEMBERSHIP Section 1. Membership in this chapter shall be known as active, honorary, and graduate. Active members become graduate members at graduation. Graduate and honorary members have no vote in chapter affairs. Section 2. Membership in this chapter is an honor bestowed upon deserving students by the faculty, and shall be based on the criteria of Scholarship, Service, Leadership, and Character. Section 3. Eligibility: a. Candidates eligible for selection to this chapter must be members of the junior or senior
class. b. To be eligible for selection to membership in this chapter, the candidate must have been

point average of 3.75 or a senior with a GPA of 3.50 having completed 5 or more AP or IB courses. This scholastic level of achievement shall remain fixed, and shall be the required minimum scholastic level of achievement for admission to candidacy. All students who can rise in scholarship to or above such standard may be admitted to candidacy for selection to membership.
d. Upon meeting the grade level, attendance, and GPA standard requirements, candidates shall then be considered based on their service, leadership, and character.
ARTICLE III: SELECTION OF MEMBERS Section 1. The selection of members to this chapter shall be by a majority vote of the Faculty Council consisting of five faculty members appointed by the principal. The chapter adviser shall be the sixth, non-‐voting, ex-‐officio member of the Faculty Council. Prior to selection, the following shall occur: a. Students’ academic records shall be reviewed to determine scholastic eligibility. b. Students who are eligible scholastically (“candidates”) shall be notified and asked to complete and submit the Individual Service Forms and Character & Leadership Reflection Form for further consideration for selection.
15

Section 6. An active member of the National Honor Society who transfers to this school will be automatically accepted for membership in this chapter. The Faculty Council shall grant to the transferring member one semester to attain the membership requirements and, thereafter, this member must maintain those requirements for this chapter in order to retain his/her membership. ARTICLE IV: DISCIPLINE and DISMISSAL Section 1. Any member who falls below the standards of scholarship, leadership, character, or service may be dismissed from the St. Louis Park Senior High School chapter of the National Honor Society. A member of the National Honor Society is expected to maintain his/her academic standing and take an active role in service and leadership to his/her school and community. Section 2. If a member’s cumulative grade point average falls below the standard in effect when he/she was selected (3.75 or a senior with a 3.50 having completed 5 or more AP/IB Courses), he /she will be given a written warning and a time period for improvement. If the cumulative grade point average remains below standard at the end of the warning period the student will be subject to further disciplinary action by the Faculty Council that may include dismissal from the chapter. Section 3. Violation of the law or school regulations can result in dismissal of a member. These violations include, but are not limited to, DWI, stealing, destruction of property, cheating, truancy, or possession, selling, or being under the influence of drugs or alcohol at school or school-‐related activities. Section 4. Offenders of the school conduct code (such as use of profanity, failure to comply, unexcused absence, excessive tardiness, etc.) will receive written warning notification. A conference may be requested by either party (Faculty Council or student/parent). If the member is involved in another violation of the school conduct code, the member may be dismissed. Section 5. In all cases of pending dismissal:
16
a. The member will receive written notification indicating the reason for possible dismissal from the adviser/Faculty Council. The member and adviser will discuss the written notification in a conference. Situations that involve flagrant violations of school rules or the law can warrant disciplinary action without a written warning although a hearing must still be held (see below). b. The member will be given the opportunity to respond to the charge against him/her at a meeting before the Faculty Council prior to the vote on dismissal (in accordance with due process identified in Article X of the National Constitution). The member has the opportunity to present his/her defense either in person. The Faculty Council will then vote on whether to dismiss. A majority vote of the Faculty Council is needed to dismiss any member. c. The results of the Faculty Council vote will be reviewed by the principal, and then if confirmed, expressed in a letter sent to the student, parents, and principal. Dismissed members must surrender any membership emblems to the adviser. d. The Faculty Council’s decision may be appealed to the building principal and afterwards through the school district discipline policy. e. When a student is dismissed or resigns, he/she is no longer a member and may never again be considered for membership in the National Honor Society. Section 6. In lieu of dismissal, the Faculty Council may impose disciplinary sanctions upon a member as deemed appropriate. ARTICLE V: OFFICERS Section 1. How to be a Good Chapter Member
20
Standards and Process for Selection of Members As stated above; the NHS constitution says the following about selection to the NHS: “membership in the local chapter is an honor bestowed upon a student. Selection for membership is by a Faculty Council and is based on outstanding scholarship, character, leadership, and service. Once selected, members have a responsibility to continue to demonstrate these qualities.” (Article VII Section 1) Students who are invited to participate in the SLP NHS are considered an NHS candidate. You must fulfill the requirements in the section “Obligations of Membership” above to be inducted into the NHS at the ceremony near the end of the school year. The Faculty Council will meet to review your NHS candidate file, which contains information regarding your GPA, your meeting attendance, your participation in leadership opportunities outside of the school day, your participation in group service projects, your individual service hour reflections, and your honor history within the school. The Faculty Council will discuss and vote on whether you have sufficiently met the requirements for induction into NHS. You will be notified in writing as to your status following this meeting. If you have been selected to be a member, you will be invited to the NHS banquet. We hope you and your family will attend.

who complete twenty individual service hours by March 19th. (No more than ten hours may carryover from the summer.) Examples of things that DO NOT count as individual service hours: • Donating blood, food, clothes, etc • Babysitting siblings • Driving siblings to places • Helping family with chores
• Coaching/helping teammates with sports
• Tutoring friends/family • Volunteering at events that take you
away from your classesThese are just examples, other things will fall into this category. When looking for volunteer opportunities, ask yourself: “Is this a thoughtful use of my time that helps the community?”; “Is this something that I would put on my resume when applying for jobs and college?” The answer to both of these questions should be YES. When in doubt, talk to Mrs. Magdal or one of the officers. Any honor violations during the year (drinking; tobacco use; cheating; suspension from school, sports, or school-‐related activities…) will result in a member’s dismissal from the National Honor Society.
