Student Commitment

It is not the desire of this program to consume all of your free time as a high school student. However, assisting in the health and well-being of the Melissa High School athletic population is a huge responsibility. If you truly have made a commitment to this program, to the athletes, and to yourself – you will remember to give your obligation the respect it deserves. It IS NOT the policy of the Sports Medicine Department to beg athletic training student aides to work. If a lack of commitment is evident and such behavior persists then you will eventually be replaced and/or dismissed.

Weekly and monthly schedules will be assigned. Some scheduling will be open for discussion, others may not. If you will be unable to meet your athletic training student aide obligations due to illness, school conflict, family emergency, ect. It is your responsibility to contact your staff athletic trainer immediately by phone or email or in person to discuss you specific situation.

Student Conduct

You have the responsibility to yourself, your family, your athletic department, and to Melissa High School to conduct yourself in a professional manner. Anyone who brings undue embarrassment to the Sports Medicine Department and/or school will be dismissed from the program.

RELATIONSHIP OF ATHLETIC TRAINING STUDENT AIDES TO:

Staff Athletic Trainers – The Staff Athletic Trainers are charged with the health care of the student-athlete. Thus the Staff Athletic Trainers are ultimately responsible for your actions. The Staff Athletic Trainers are reasonable and willing to discuss questions or problems. However, discussions should be held at the appropriate time and place. Due to the nature of our business there are times when questions should be held for later – just follow instructions for the time being. Athletics is an emotional business – do not let yourself get caught up in the excitement.

Melissa High School Athletic Training Student Aide Handbook

9

Upper Level Athletic training student aides – These students know the ropes and will be of assistance to the less experienced athletic training student aides. Check with them or a Staff Athletic Trainer when you are not sure about something that you have been asked to do.

Fellow Athletic training student aides— Remember you are family! Please remember the golden rule and treat one another with the highest respect. Always keep in mind that other people are watching you. If problems arise, please notify a staff athletic trainer immediately. If problems continue within the group, dismissals from the program will be made at the discretion of the staff and administration.

Team Physician – This Training Room would not exist without our team physician. We must treat him/her with the respect that he/she has earned. As a student you will have the opportunity to get to know and work with the team physician. You can also learn by watching and listening to discussions. If you are called on to report to the doctors or assist them, be sure to give them detailed information when reporting and follow their instructions specifically and efficiently.

Coaches – Learn to get along with the coaches and make it a habit of learning their names – this information could be valuable in a time of need. However, as an athletic training student aide you should never discuss any injuries with a coach. ALL INJURY INFORMATION SHOULD COME FROM A STAFF ATHLETIC TRAINER. If you are covering a sport alone, you can fill the coach in on basic information. Coaches are human and can become frustrated by factors beyond anyone’s control. Do not take it personally if a coach raises his/her voice towards you. Keep your head and do your job.

General Public, Media, and Student Body – You may be confronted as to the health of an athlete by almost anyone. This information is CONFIDENTIAL to everyone outside of the doctors, athletic trainers, and coaches. This information should not be discussed outside of the Athletic Training Room. This includes classmates, friends, and family. In such situations, it is the only appropriate time to act ignorant (I DON’T KNOW – I’M ONLY A STUDENT).

Athletes – The athletes are your peers. Thus it is sometimes difficult to maintain a professional relationship. THERE WILL BE NO FRATERNIZING WITH THE ATHLETES DURING TREATMENTS, PRACTICES, OR GAMES. As an athletic training student aide, you are here to assist in the prevention and treatment of athletic injuries – not to PAMPER athletes. Do not discuss an injury with an athlete in specific or speculative terms. If you ever have a problem with a particular athlete; bring it to the attention of a Staff Athletic Trainer – ASAP. Remember, to treat these athletes as you would like to be treated

Expectations, Conduct and Discipline

Expectations are held high for all Melissa High School athletic training student aides. Conducting yourself in a manner benefitting the program and the school at all times includes your primary academic responsibility; your athletic training student aide duties are second.

ACADEMIC RESPONSIBILITIES

Academics are the primary focus of the Sports Medicine Program and should be given priority over your duties as an athletic training student aide. For this reason, a strict – but fair outline is in place to ensure that you dedicate the utmost attention to your academic endeavors. It is your responsibility to inform the Staff Athletic Trainers that you need to alter your schedule to concentrate on academics. However – this needs to be the exception rather than the norm. Failure to meet academic standards will not be accepted. Failure to follow these guidelines and meet assigned due dates will result in a loss of participation. Grade monitoring will be completed by the staff athletic trainers routinely, if you become ineligible you will be required to attend tutorials for all classes that you do not maintain a 70% or higher for the entire time that you are ineligible. However, tutorials cannot interfere with previously scheduled practices. * If you are ineligible you will be scheduled to only work athletic practices, you will forfeit the honor to work games until you are eligible.

ATTENDANCE & PUNCTUALITY

It is a privilege to be a athletic training student aide. This privilege will be respected through proper attendance as scheduled for practices and games. Punctuality is necessary to run our programs. Be respectful of other individual’s time. Failure to comply will result in discipline and possible dismissal from the Melissa High School sports medicine program.

STUDENT DRESS CODE

Your personal appearance and hygiene is a direct reflection of your personality and the Melissa High School Sports Medicine Program. You will be expected to always be within the dress code and behave in a professional manner. Athletic Training is a medical/health profession and personal hygiene and appearance must be maintained. Athletic training student aides will primarily work in three settings – practices, home games and away games. The following guidelines should be used to determine proper attire for event coverage.

Athletic Training Room and Practice

A. Pants: Wind pants, sweats and nice jeans that are within the standardized dress code are allowed. Skirts, yoga pants or tights should never be worn out to practices/games.

B. Shirt: Any shirt deemed appropriate by the Athletic Training Staff will be permitted. The abdominal region must be covered; if any part of your stomach/back shows at any time then the shirt is not appropriate. The Athletic Training Staff makes the final decision about an article of clothing.

C. Shorts: Khaki, black, denim or athletic shorts are preferred. The shorts must be mid-thigh or longer (past your fingertips) and appropriate by the Melissa High School dress code. These are the most appropriate shorts for working in the Athletic Training setting. There will be no athletic shorts that have writing on the gluteus area. The Athletic Training Staff makes the final decision about unacceptable shorts. No cut-offs of any kind will be permitted.

D. Hats: Any hat to be worn outside must be acceptable by the Athletic Training Staff.

E. Shoes: Athletic shoes are most comfortable and efficient for the athletic training environment.

Home Events

A. Pants: Nice jeans, khakis or black slacks. Belts should be worn if shirts are tucked in.

B. Shirts: Melissa High School shirts should be worn unless another article has been issued to you for your sport and approved by the Athletic Training Staff. Athletic training student aides must be dressed alike when working together.

C. Tennis shoes: Athletic shoes must be worn during all home events. You will not be permitted onto the field with open toed shoes.

Melissa High School Athletic Training Student Aide Handbook

14

Away Events

A. The home event dress code applies to away events.

B. When traveling to away events, dress appropriately for the weather, the event and the team. The attire must be within the Melissa High School dress code.

C. When riding on the bus all clothing must be within Melissa High School dress code and acceptable to the particular-coach and situation.

D. Maintain a professional appearance and behavior at all times (even when the athletes do not). Remember you are judged at a higher level while participating in this program, by the Athletic Training Staff, Administrators and the public.

Key Points to Remember: - Athletic training student aides working together must always be dressed alike. Get together and decide on clothing before the event occurs. - The Athletic Training Staff will make the final decision about inappropriate clothing and will make the final decision to wear shorts, pants and the color. Excessively baggy or tight clothing may also be deemed inappropriate.

DISCIPLINE

In the unlikely event that a problem does occur within the Sports Medicine Program, procedure will follow that of Melissa High School and the athletic department. Referrals will be issued and records of each action will be kept on file. The referral will be signed by your parents and yourself. Violations of Student Athletic Handbook Guidelines which are not yet violations of Melissa High School policies, will result in a parent phone call and/or conference with both the staff athletic trainer(s), the parent, and the athletic training student aide present. If problems persist, it will result in dismissal from the program.

NATIONAL ATHLETIC TRAINERS’ ASSOCIATION: OFFICIAL STATEMENT ON PROPER SUPERVISION OF SECONDARY SCHOOL ATHLETIC

TRAINING STUDENT AIDES

Introduction: This Official Statement of the National Athletic Trainers’ Association provides support and guidance to school administrators and athletic trainers in the education and supervision of secondary school students enrolled in sports medicine courses or volunteering in secondary school athletic training programs. The goal of this statement is to continue to foster a positive, safe learning environment where students benefit from the instruction and observation of qualified health care professionals. Official Statement: The NATA recognizes that allowing secondary school students the opportunity to observe the daily professional duties and responsibilities of an athletic trainer can be a valuable educational experience. This unique experience may expose students to the foundations of various health related careers as well as provide them with important life skills. Regardless of practice setting, it is understood that all athletic trainers must comply with their state practice acts, the BOC Standards of Practice when certified, and the NATA Code of Ethics when a member. These legal and ethical parameters apply and limit the incorporation of student aides outside of the classroom and within the activities of athletic programs. Student aides must only observe the licensed/certified athletic trainer outside of the educational environment. Coaches and school administrators must not allow or expect student aides to assist or act independently with regard to the evaluation, assessment, treatment and/or rehabilitation of injuries. Additionally, it is paramount that student aides not be expected, asked or permitted to make “return to play” decisions. Specifically, licensed/certified athletic trainers, coaches and administrators must not ask athletic training student aides to engage in any of the following activities: (1) Interpreting referrals from other healthcare providers (2) Performing individual evaluations on a patient (3) Making decisions about treatments, procedures or activities (4) Planning patient care (5) Independently providing athletic training services (anything beyond basic first aid and prevention care) during team travel
