Reader Profile
The purpose behind creating Melanin Take Over (MTO) Magazine was to provide an outlet for queer women of color to be praised in an opportunity to exhibit their work through the different facets and modes of artistic and cultural expression. Although quite a niche audience, the subject matter of MTO Magazine provides a rare ad necessary platform for women of color to be celebrated in the public eye through positive and inspiring images and stories from and about these women themselves. MTO is targeted towards, but certainty not limited to queer women of color. Although the magazine highlights a large amount of queer women of color, MTO features a wide variety of people of color at large. The magazine acts as an all inclusive community outreach platform of sorts. Our mission is to highlight the overlooked and underreported minority groups such as people of color and people that identify with the LGBTQ community. MTO’s primary age group of focus is between 18 to 35, with the majority of content pertaining to people whom themselves are within that age range. MTO is divided into four main sections; features, art, inspiHERing and music. The features section concentrates on featuring various women of color who are currently presenting new work –

whether it be artistic, musical or film orientated. MTO’s art section is devoted to stories focused on museum exhibits that feature controversial and/or groundbreaking artwork by and of people of col-or. The inspiHERing section, is one in which tru-ly spectacular and groundbreaking women of col-or are featured through the spotlighting of their provocative work that is changing conversations around innovation and originality, while working to inspire women of color at large. Finally, the music section of the magazine emphasizes radical (black and brown) musicians who are pioneering novel platforms of revolutionary sounds. In its entirety, MTO Magazine works to bring justice and esteem to a multiplicity of underrepresented groups of people of color.

STUDIO MUSEUMHARLEMA dynamic interdisciplinary exhibition exploring contemporary art through the lens of Afrofuturist aesthetics
Coined in 1994 by writer Mark Dery in his essay “Black to the Fu-ture,” the term “Afrofuturism” refers to a creative and intellectual genre that emerged as a strategy to explore sci-ence fiction, fantasy, magical realism and pan-Africanism. With roots in the avant-garde musical stylings of sonic innovator Sun Ra (born Herman Poole Blount, 1914–1993), Afrofuturism has
–1993), Afrofuturism has been used by artists, writers and theorists as a way to prophesize the future, redefine the present and reconceptualize the past. The Shadows Took Shape will be one of the few major museum exhibitions to explore the ways in which this form of creative expression has been adopted internationally and highlight the range of work made over the past twenty-five yearsjjhjhjhjhjhjhjhjhjhutrdedfdccdghi-hjuhol. The exhibition draws its title fr-
om an obscure Sun Ra poem and a posthumously re-leased series of recordings. Providing an apt metaphor for the long shadow cast by Sun Ra and others, the exhibition will feature more than sixty works of art, including ten new commissions, charting the evolu-tion of Afrofuturist tendencies by an international selection of established and emerging practitioners. These works span not only personal themes of iden-tity and self-determination in the African-American community, but also persistent concerns of tech-no-culture, geographies, utopias and dystopias, as well as universal preoccupations with time and space. The twenty-nine artists featured in The Shadows Took Shape work in a wide variety of media, including photography, video, painting, drawing, sculpture and multimedia installation.
