• Spellings (starts after October half term) – We will be teaching and practicing spelling patterns in class. Each week we will send home 10 spellings from the KS2 National Curriculum word list.

• Topic homework continues and can be found on the school website.

• Weekly reading expectations are 5x per week • Interactive Resources (which is detailed on the website) can

be accessed for maths activities.

• Children should choose at least 1 activity per half term from the homework list. This can be found on the school website.

Year 3 Homework – Romans Please complete a minimum of one task per half term, but of course you may complete as many of the tasks as you like. You can present your work in any way you wish. We look forward to seeing some of your amazing creations. Have fun!

Talk The Romans conquered lots of countries. Interview 5 or more people and find out which countries they have visited. Choose a suitable way to present your results, e.g. table or graph. Make up three questions about your results and answer them.

Prepare a short talk on the differences between Celtic and Roman clothing.

Research Which Roman inventions do we still use today?

Research various Roman or Celtic shield designs, and then draw your own shield design.

Create Romans were well known for extravagant mosaics. Have a go at creating your own.

Create an aqueduct.

Understand How did the Romans shape our country today?

Pretend to be a Roman soldier. Use a timer to march for 10 minutes carrying a backpack. How do you feel?

Experiment Can you find a roman recipe and recreate this?

How many Roman gods, heroes and characters can you find in the sky? Can you draw them?

Reflect What has been your favourite part of the topic?

How do you think you would react in a roman battle?

Remember…

The office will no longer phone home if children forget their P.E. kits. Children are NOT allowed to borrow kit from other children.

PE kits should remain in school but will be sent home half termly to ‘freshen up’.

This booklet includes the end of year 3

expectations for children in our school based on

the new National Curriculum. These are the

minimum requirements your child must meet in

order to be graded as working at ‘National

Expectation.’

All the objectives will be worked on throughout

the year and will be the focus of direct teaching.

Any extra support you can provide in helping your

children to achieve these is greatly valued.

If you have any queries regarding the content of

this booklet or want support in knowing how best

to help your child please talk to your child’s

Across the course of the school year, the school intends to increase the amount of trips for the children. Whilst the school will try to ensure that some of these trips will be free, some inevitably will require a parent contribution. The school is able to subsidise some of these trips, however, without your support we may have to reduce these down.

Children will be given opportunities to carry out fundraising activities in order to bring the overall cost of trips down.

Attitude to learning FAQs Why might there be a difference between the teacher’s and my child’s grading? [e.g Teacher grade higher than pupils grade] – This occurs generally with children who lack confidence. The child is unable to identify how good they are or the skills they have. Or pupil doesn’t fully understand the phrases included in the report [e.g Teachers grade lower than pupils grade] – This occurs generally with children who are overly confident. They may feel they are working hard when in fact their teacher may be aware that they can do so much better! Or pupil doesn’t fully understand the phrases included in the report. I don’t agree with the teachers grading! My child is a good learner at home! - This judgment is based on what the teachers see in school. If your child does show good learning skills at home, then it may be worth reminding your child that they need to show this in school. What score should my child be at? - As a school we are aiming for at least stage 6. This is the first time we have done this and so we have a number of children in the 3,4 and 5 section. Over time we hope to see this improve as we work with the children and help them to understand the importance of being a good learner. Children will also start to understand what is meant by each of the levels more and in turn be able to make a more accurate judgment of their own learning.

Reading

Each child has been issued with a library book and

a reading book.

The children will have an opportunity to change

these weekly during their allotted library slot.

1 to 1 reading is not timetabled. Focus is on

comprehension via 5 x 30 minute daily Guided

Reading sessions and Literacy lessons.

Just 5 minutes listening with each child read equates

to approximately 2.5 hours each week!
