Issue 22 Spring 2016 Page 1 WELCOME. Welcome to both primary and secondary schools in the Howard SSP area, we hope your pupils are having a good sporting Spring 2016 at your school! We would like to update you with some national developments and some local school sporting competition news and say well done to those schools that qualified for the Kent School Games finals which took place in February 2016. Indoor rowing: Robert Napier and Rainham Girls School. Sports Hall Athletics: St. Marys Primary, Rainham Girls and Rainham Mark Grammar Boys. Primary Basketball: Hempstead Juniors. Handball: Howard School, Rainham Girls and Rainham Mark Grammar who had many teams. Badminton: Rainham Girls and Rainham Mark Grammar. Currently at national level the government have written a National Sports Strategy (December 2015) which reflects the role and work of the School Games Organisers (SGO) in a positive light. The Youth Sport Trust and Sport England are currently reviewing the role of SGO’s locally, to plan for delivery from 2016-2020. Those agencies are also waiting upon the significance of the National Childhood Obesity Strategy, which is due out in March 2016. The Primary P.E. Premium annual funding is still secure for every Primary School in the country, until 2020. Furthermore, Sport England Satellite Club funding has been secured and announced from April 2016 - March 2017, so secondary schools in the Howard SSP area need to meet with Claire Moore to ascertain which sporting clubs they would like to establish for a minimum of 18 weeks (between April 2016 and March 2017). We are beginning to pull together our menu of school sport services/packages for Primary Schools available for purchase from September 2016-July 2017. Next academic year we are adding a couple of new Primary services to widen our service and product offer: School Sport Organising Crew Training and a Primary P.E. Assessment package. Due to a strong demand from Primary Teachers, our staff at the HSSP are beginning to develop an excel tool kit to help Primary Teachers to track pupils progress in P.E. lessons. These excel spreadsheets are going to be activity specific and will use current terminology (emerging, expected, exceeding) and themes. We are currently piloting/trialling these tracker sheets in Primary Schools, as they are being developed by our staff. We would like to thank those schools for giving us useful feedback, to make these products for all year groups (1-6), user friendly for staff and we hope that all assessment products will come to fruition and be available for sale by September 2016. The Youth Sport Trust has made C4L clubs (to sustain and embed existing clubs and establish new clubs wherever possible) and health and well-being in general a priority for Primary Schools this year. So this is why we are currently doing a C4L questionnaire to all HSSP Primary Schools to try and find out the existing position and to find out how we can help Primary Schools to maintain these clubs/provide regular suitable physical activity clubs for those children who are not physically active, through targeting physically inactive children at a young age (through the National Childhood Measurement Programme). This HSSP survey also explains about ‘School Sport Organising Crews’ and possible training for the next academic year. There are some worthwhile prizes for schools with successful C4L clubs (visit to a soft play venue) and other prizes for three school surveys returned and ‘pulled out of the hat’. Thank you for your continued support for P.E. and School Sport. CLAIRE MOORE PDM and SGO Page 1: Welcome and Page 3: Primary P.E. Team Teaching at several Primary Schools and Update. This group of year 5 or 6 pupils are a diverse group of young people in Primary Schools who join together to lead the planning and delivery of school sport clubs and Level 1 (intra) sports competitions, which is the first tier of the national School Games programme. As well as improving the School Games, being part of a crew helps to develop life, team and employability skills for the students involved. Our training session (half day in a central venue for all primary schools who buy into this service) will provide information about the School Games and introduce the different specialist roles of:- reporters, designers, statisticians, young ambassadors and Change4Life champions to which individual Crew members will be assigned. As part of the training, each Crew will be tasked with planning and delivering an activity within their own or to another school. This will be an important lesson in organisation, communication and teamwork. We would also give the crews some time to spend with their teacher creating an action plan for the year ahead where they can decide on what activities they would like to deliver, when they would run them and for which year groups. As well as ensuring that sporting activities and participation opportunities are actively promoted across their school for pupils. We hope that lots of schools will take up this opportunity. MEDWAY PRIMARY SCHOOL GAMES (PSG) TRI GOLF FESTIVAL YEARS 3 AND 4 - DECEMBER 2015Eighteen Primary schools across Medway took part in the Medway Tri Golf Festival for year 3 and 4 pupils at Medway Park. The results were as follows:-

Congratulations go the winning team, Hoo. St. Werburgh, who were the highest placed HSSP School and this school will receive an invitation to attend the Kent School Games Tri Golf finals in the summer of 2016. Bredhurst Primary won the Fair Play Award. This event was very well supported with student sport leaders from Brompton Academy and the Hundred of Hoo Secondary Academy. Many thanks for their invaluable assistance.

MEDWAY PRIMARY SCHOOL GAMES (PSG)SPORTS HALL ATHLETICS YEARS 5 & 6 AND YEARS 3 & 4 FESTIVALS AT MEDWAY PARKThis event has grown and grown so much in popularity, that this year we needed a whole day to cater for one age group. Therefore, we held the age groups on separate days at Medway Park. In the year 5 and 6’s, 24 teams entered both across the AM and PM sessions, and St. Marys Primary School (Gillingham) won overall title (see team photo above) and have now represented Medway in the Kent School Games finals. Temple Mill Primary School (see team photo below left), won the Fair Play Award.

Then in the year 3 and 4 Medway Primary Sports Hall Athletics Festival 29 teams entered and St. Margarets’ Junior School camethird overall and so were the highest placed HSSP school and hence qualified for the Kent School Games finals in the summer of 2016 in Ashford. Both Hoo St. Werburgh and Fairview Primaries won the Fair Play Awards (see photos on page 1).Both of the these Festivals would not have been possible without the very professional support of Rainham Girls School student sport leaders and staff, many other HSSP staff and Adam at Sports Hall Athletics Ltd. Thanks to everyone for two successful Primary Festivals.
