Squires served theirnobleman out on thebattlefield for aroundseven years before beingdubbed a knight. Theywere at about the age of 20 or 21 by the time theywere given theirceremony.

    The only way that a

squire could enterknighthood early was if they commited anawesome act of braveryon the battlefield. Manysquires were killed whileretrieving a new shieldlance for their lord. If theywere on normal schedule,

the well trained squirewould set out a time forthe ceremony. On the

night before theceremony the soon to bekight would spend histime praying. He askedfor forgiveness and forpeace and guidance alonghis journey. He spent hiswhole night in the chapelwithout food or sleep. Thenext morning the squire

took a warm cleansingbath. He then put on hisarmor and tunic. Theceremony was often doneat the home of the squirewith his lord. While on hisknees the lord of thesquire would hit him onthe shoulder with his

hand or sword and say, Idub thee Sir Knight. Atthis time, the once

lord who was followedby his squire, was a fellow

companion in the fight fortheir city and village. Thesquire would no longer bereferred to as squire, butas Sir.
