They are generally two types of Job Skills - hard
and soft skills.
Most jobs require a
combination of both hard and
soft skills.
Soft skills are influenced by our personality. These are words that describe who you are as a person.
Things that impact our soft skills are: how we are raised, how we are trained. They are hard to acquire in a short period of time
Soft skills may also be known as behavioral competenciesInterpersonal Skills, or people skills.
Some examples of soft skills are:
Ability to come to work on time regularly.Ability to work independently with our
supervision.Good communication skill to get along
other people.
Increasinly soft skills are gaining more and more importance.
For example a lawyer not only needs to
know the finer points of law but also the skill to manage a client.
An IT person not only should know how to program but also be able to deal with users (internal and external) to better understand what will be useful to them.
As mentioned earlier, changing a soft skill is more difficulty.
It is a combination of training and trial and error over a long period of time for many people.
It is difficulty to change a personality trait.
Eg of Soft skills:Adaptable, Motivate co-workers, Good
listener, Team player, Dependable, Conscientious, Punctual, Analytical, Organized, Honest, Energetic, Artistic, Enterprising, Outgoing, Productive, Responsible.
Hard skills are: your knowledge and ability to accomplish
a process or procedure related to your job,
eg for an accounting job: manage an account, accounts receivable and payable, year end taxation.
These skills relate to industry specific jargon and could be easily measurable.
Hard skills are usually tangible, specific, and usually teachable:
typing 50 words per minute or changing tires.
Hard skills are the technical or administrative knowledge that an employee must have to support the activities of a specific business activity or a job.
Example of Hard Skills:
Operate a forklift, Program a computer, Read a GPS, Build furniture, Install a dishwasher, Paint, Order merchandise, Count money, Write a manual, Set-up equipment, Drive a vehicle, Perform surgery, Teach a language, File documents, Plant a tree
