Palmyra Medical Center, once again, is a leader in bringing the newest healthcare technology to southwest Georgia. Last month the hospital introduced the latest in computer-assisted technology for Neurological, ENT, General, Orthopedic and Spinal Surgery. This system is the first of its kind in Georgia. There are only 30 such units in use nationwide. It is the most advanced system available for navigation and endoscopic surgery.

The hospital has constructed a complete state-of-the-art Navigation Suite in the Operating

Room. The Suite is dedicated to surgeries that will benefit from the use of this advanced system.

Returning to Albany this past summer, Dr. Harry Weiser, a neurosurgeon with Palmyra Brain and Spine Center, approached Palmyra Medical Center with the idea of providing a more technologically advanced system to treat patients needing neurological and other

surgeries. The Stryker Navigation technology for neurological surgery uses an infrared camera and instruments along with unique tracking software to guide surgeons and their instruments through the delicate anatomy of the brain.

“It’s like having a global positioning system in the operating room,” said Dr. Weiser. “Computer-assisted technology gives us valuable and accurate information on the relative position of instruments, healthy anatomy and surgical targets. By improving the safety of the surgery it also leads to improved patient outcomes.”

Computer-assisted neurological surgery begins with CT or MRI brain scans that show the patient’s brain anatomy and reveals the location and extent of the abnormality. Scans are loaded into a workstation computer that creates a virtual 3-D model of the patient’s head. Neurosurgeons then identify “landmarks” that can be registered with the patient’s real

anatomy and a determination is made about the size of incision and the angle depth of entry into the brain.

During surgery, the infrared camera communicates with the sensors mounted on the patient and instruments, with the tracking software continuously calculating and displaying the location of the surgical instruments relative to the patient’s anatomy.

“Potential benefits to the patient are numerous,” said Dr. Weiser. “They include tumor removal, brain biopsies that are conducted with a calculated trajectory and dept, smaller surgical wounds, reduced trauma to the adjacent healthy tissue, and reduced complication rates. Computer assisted technology may lessen patient morbidity, shorten hospitalization, decrease the need for intensive care, and shorten recovery time, all while

potentially contributing to a reduction in cost.”

The overall benefits of the Navigation system for ENT and Orthopedic Spine surgeries are similar to those of Neurological surgery.

Dr. Chris Mann, an ENT surgeon on staff at Palmyra, has seen the navigation system in use and understands the benefits it offers.

“There are cases where having this computer assisted technology will be very valuable,” said Dr. Mann. “The navigation system will be great for complex sinus procedures where having a precise map of the patient’s anatomy will be a tremendous asset.”

Palmyra Medical Center recently introduced a new program called SHAPEDOWN®

to help area children and teens who struggle with obesity.

The program is designed to give kids and parents the tools to change poor habits and to get them on track for a new, thinner and certainly healthier lifestyle.

Through SHAPEDOWN®

children and teens will learn to create an active, full life so that food, television and computer activities become less important.

This process will help participants learn how to feel good about their bodies and themselves sending them in a happier, more positive direction.

Parental or adult participation is required for the SHAPEDOWN® program. The family’s lifestyle and communication will be changed through positive interaction and

by incorporating important learning tools that have made SHAPEDOWN® a proven success. Overall the emphasis is on producing changes now that can be sustained over the long run, so that these youngsters can go on to a life that is free from dieting and

weight concerns.“Introduction of this program

represents an important statement to the community that it is time to address the issues of childhood obesity in southwest Georgia, “said Amy Grasman, FNP-C, director of the Bariatric Institute of southwest Georgia. “We have high expectations that SHAPEDOWN® will help our kids identify their obesity issues and set them on a track to develop a more positive lifestyle.” Currently the State of Georgia has the third highest

percent of overweight youth, ages 10-17, at 37 percent.

SHAPEDOWNSHAPEDOWN® classes are

conducted two nights per week, Mondays and Thursdays, for a 10-week period. Ideally, each class will have 10-12 participants. All sessions are conducted by trained professionals and include patient education for weight management, as well as instruction on health issues, proper nutrition and support

counseling. Exercise is also a major component.

Albany Pediatrician Tania Smith, M.D. has treated her share of obese kids and has been a champion for the elimination of childhood obesity. She said it is time to tackle this problem head on.

“As a community, as a nation,

we are losing the obesity battle. It is an epidemic,” said Dr. Smith. “It is time to help kids and their families, through a proven weight management program, help win the war on obesity.”

The next 10-week session is scheduled to begin in January 2011. For more information on how to sign up for this effective weight management program, contact the Bariatric Institute of Southwest Georgia at 229-434-2032.

Albany Technical College Begins Evening Practical Nursing Program Winter Quarter 2011

planned so that theory and practice are integrated under the guidance of the clinical instructor. This factor is part of Albany Tech’s Work Ready initiative so that each graduate is more than prepared to enter the workforce with success.

“Albany Tech’s Practical Nursing program prides itself on providing students with a solid entry level skill and knowledge base,” said Mattie Buchannon, Practical Nursing instructor.

“Upon completion of the program, students are eligible to write the State Board exam to become a Licensed Practical Nurse, which opens employment opportunities for them in long-term care, convenient care facilities, physician offices, clinics and private duty,” added Buchannon.

In addition to the Albany Tech standard admissions requirements, students must also score a 35 or above on the Nursing Aptitude Test (NAT), and

Beginning Winter Quarter 2011, Albany Technical College will begin its evening Practical Nursing diploma program. The College anticipates solid enrollment for the evening program with the demand up for those students seeking to train for a career in nursing, but schedules may not permit them to enroll in the day class program.

The Practical Nursing diploma program at Albany Tech is designed to prepare students to write the NCLEX-PN examination for licensure as practical nurses. The program prepares graduates to give competent nursing case, which is performed through a selected number of academic and occupational courses providing a variety of techniques and materials necessary to assist the student in acquiring the needed knowledge and skills to give competent care.

Along with coursework, a variety of clinical experiences are
